I hope it’s ok to post this here. I’m just really at a loss and don’t know what else I can do.

My wife started a new job in Calgary so we moved here in June along with our kid. Wife works full time but not enough to support our entire family. I haven’t worked since last October and EI ran out in April. We are just sinking deeper everyday. I’ve been searching and applying for work everywhere and haven’t had a single interview.

My background:
I have a diploma in network administration, worked with Telus as an installer for a few years until COVID. I’m also great with computers, I’m competent to work as IT admin just lacking education and experience.
I have a commercial helicopter license, but extremely low flight time. Asthma gets in the way of all the firefighting work. And nowhere else is taking on low time pilots.
Did some odd seasonal work for the past 2 years. From construction to hospitality.

I’m also bilingual (English and French), and have a working vehicle.

I’ve been applying everywhere, tried temp agencies (around 20 or so, all found on Google), the armed forces (rejected due to asthma), indeed/linkedin/directly on company site.

I’m not even picky with the type of job. Preferably full time, doesn’t matter if it’s outdoor or indoor, day shift or night, I’ll take anything.

We also don’t have any friends here or anyone to ask for a referral so I’m really at a loss on what else I can do. How did you all land your current gig?

Hi all!

I'm seeking some advice for trying to seek out and maybe land a role as a Mechanical/Project EIT or Junior (but honestly not quite Junior) Project Engineer/Manager role in construction/O&G/Utilities in Calgary.

For context, my wife and I are from Toronto, and she recently got admitted into Calgary Med School so I've since got her a place in Calgary, while I continue to work my Project Engineer role here in Toronto. Unfortunately, my current employer can't let me work from the Calgary office given that my role is a bit regional to Toronto in a sense.

So I've been job hunting for the past few days ever since I got the news that its either I continue to ride it out in Toronto, or the writings on the wall. They've been supportive in not pressuring me to make a decision so I have free reign to apply now as I work.

Aside from a co-op work term in Grande Prairie, AB several years ago, I don't really have a network in Calgary. Ive been applying to jobs on LinkedIn and Indeed (pretty aggressively I'd say), and sure its been a few days so I'm not particularly anxious right now, but I may be down the road.

Any suggestions for me finding roles that fit my needs. I'd be registering as an EIT through APEGA asap, to at least get the ball rolling on that. Should I consider smaller boutique firms or general contractors as the best way to get my foot in the door rather than going for the larger corporations which may have longer recruiting timelines?

Any websites/job boards I could consider?

Few things that may simplify my profile: Canadian citizen, G class drivers (highest in Ontario), have a residence in Calgary that I can move to at any moment, relocation would take me a weekend at most. Also, worked as Project Engineer for 2.5-3 years, have plenty of coop experience from Uni. I'm P.Eng track here in Ontario!

Does anyone know where I can get hired as an electrical apprenticeship?

Anyone here currently working in Alberta Corrections as a Correctional Peace Officer or gone through the hiring process recently?
I keep seeing the CPO 1 & 2 competition posted as ongoing for multiple locations, so I’m trying to understand what’s actually happening behind the scenes.
Are they genuinely short staffed right now? If so, how bad is it and which centres are struggling the most?
Also, what’s the real reason for the turnover? Is it mostly shift work, burnout, forced overtime, management, safety issues, people leaving for sheriffs/police/other peace officer jobs, or something else?
For people who applied recently, how long did it take to hear back after applying, and what was the process actually like from application to interview, physical testing, background checks, training and offer?
I’m also curious how competitive it really is right now. If they are short staffed, does that make the hiring process easier or are they still very selective?
Would appreciate answers from current or former Alberta CPOs, especially anyone who knows what staffing and hiring look like in 2026.

I have been apying for job for a long time. Luckily I have a job that can pay my bills but it is not something that I want to be doing. I am currently working as an insurance broker.

I recently came across a position that needed some insurance experience. I was grateful for the experience I have gained as an insurance broker.

I reached to employees of that company on LinkedIn, connected with one and got a referral as well. I applied for the position 3 days after the posting was out using the referral in my job application. Attached a resume and a cover letter as well.

Later an senior recruiter of the company accepted my request and I reached out to her to say that I have applied and am very interested in the position. She forwarded my name to the recruiter who was hiring. Recruiter reached out to me on LinkedIn and said that they will contact me if I am being shortlisted.

I just feel like having a referral doesn't even matter anymore. I even went an extra mile by reaching out to the senior recruiter. After doing all of this and having enough experience for the role I am still not being shortlisted. Can't people see how excited I am for this position.

I need advice on what more should I be doing in order get an interview from the company.
