11 years neglect/freeform

11 years freeforms/neglect. No started method, just stopped brushing my hair. All I've ever done is just pull apart the knots to prevent toooooo much congos.

If I could go back, I'd try to prevent a straight middle part. I dye them red usually as you can see. They are all different length but roughly just past at my knees.

I started my locs about a month ago. I have 2 a/b hair. The first two pics are my first attempt using twist n rip and crochet. I had them for about 2 weeks and I hated them. They were morphing into weird alien turds and they were too thick. Too tight at the top and bottom, uneven density pockets in the middle, and hair was slipping out everywhere. So i went through and revised each one. I combed them out and re-locced with just the crochet hook without the "fluff nest." It was pretty easy because the hair was already textured from being locked.

The 2nd 2 pics are after revision, pre-wash. As you can see they are pretty stiff still and stick out like twigs. They are dry af. I spritz with water and rosemary eo every morning but they are not softening. I am a little sad about the shrinkage, my hair was past my armpits loose and now its just under my shoulders. It feels like it will take forever for them to be long and soft and pretty.

Any tips or advice? Idk what im doing, im pretty much winging it.

I'm about six months in and pretty happy with my progress. It's definitely time for maintenance.i know I definitely need to start wearing a bonnet when I sleep to help with breakage. Any care tips and tricks from people with pretty fine wavy hair? I live in the desert and this summer my scalp is feeling pretty dry and itchy. I'm not sure what products to use for moisture. I only have about half of my head done when you count my bangs and undercut.

Edited to clarify some questions

really disappointed. Been freeforming since February and it obviously looks like dogshit, literally looks like regular unkept curly hair. The hair is forming into small “locs” but nothing remotely close to what i want. The shape looks horrible also as you can see. Started off with the towel rubbing but then stopped and let it do its thing and back combed now and then. I actually desperately need to figure this out and get it looking presentable for school in a month because best believe im not gonna be showing up like this. I really need any tips possible and I plead that its more than the generic “just embrace the chaos” type shit. This aint the “progress” type of chaos this is shits not working type of chaos.

I dont even care if it goes outside the boundaries of freeforms as long as its something i can do myself without going to a loctician. If you need any more pictures to asses my situation i will be more than happy to provide them. Also i will answer any questions. Also my hair was SLIGHTLY damp in the photos(i think) but not like it makes a huge difference.

Thanks in advance!

Updo tutorials?

If at all possible, could all of my fellow loc lovelies share their updo tutorial videos and pics? I work in a professional setting and it’s hot as HECK right now! Bonus if you have any with scarves or head wraps!

7 months into this journey. Wash day. I hate this stage it's in. It's insufferable with the frizz.

Still love the journey, though. I think they're coming along beautifully and really starting to lock up. I look forward to the coming months. 😁

Question Starting locs with thin wavy hair

Was wondering if I could start by getting two strand twists professionally done to see if I like the look first and just interlocking them and using crotchet for them to lock up

i have thin, wavy hair and would like to be able to wash them often after the first few weeks

i wanted thicker dreads and i think its safe to say i succeeded!

the first pic they were fresh after an overnight sleep on a microfiber towel. i literally made the majority of them (took most of the day!!) and i passed right out. i did not sleep on my locs.

did the last one this morning when i woke up and i love them!

second one was taken mid day when it was hot out. holy frizz 😬😳

my only concern is i know they’re going to thicken up over time but they’re my dreads and i think whatever happens they will be beautiful!

I made my first set of dreadwraps

I’ve been doing freeform for a few months but they kept unraveling (skill issue ik) so i made some wraps out of some yarn i used to practice making bracelets with.

Not my color choice but I couldn’t find my hemp string and I’m broke so I went with this.

Gonna leave them alone for a few weeks and see how they turn out. I wish I could’ve gotten them closer to the roots🤞

First picture is when I started them.

Hair color advice

So I've been thinking about coloring the top like 1/3 of my locs and my bangs pink. I just wanted some advice from people who have done it and were happy with it. Brands to use, how well it came out, advice on saturating the locs, etc. Let me know!

How thin is too thin?

I had my locs crocheted in about 7 months ago
And am trying to go freeform from now. However, as a wavey haired person, I wonder if my super thin locks will be able to do it themselves? Some of them are pencil thin. Is there enough hair there to let them sort it out alone or do we need to merge the little ones?

Epsom salt?

Hi everybody! I want to do an epsom salt soak in my tub and I’m wondering if anybody knows if it’s ok to do with their locs? Should I keep my head out of the tub? I really just want to soak my head in there too but I don’t know if it’s not a good idea for some reason. Is it too drying for locs? Too smoothing? Any advice is much appreciated!

Hi everyone! I am a long time lover of dreads and ive had a few unsuccessful sets. I decided tonight to just go for it and start them. I have a crochet appointment next month but i am now qiestioning if id rather go the more natural route first. Hence i jsut went ahead and started! I did backcomb and twist and rip. Advice welcome.

Also hard to tell but i do have a mohawk. Now a dreadhawk!
