Data Point PayPal Debit Grocery Category Still Available

56 Upvotes

I saw a data point yesterday that the grocery category for the card was removed, but I just logged on to select my category and the grocery category was available. I was able to successfully select it as my category for September. For reference, I'm in the eastern US and selected the category via my PayPal mobile app.

Help Needed / Question Just found a strange credit card on my file that I never opened.

19 Upvotes

I downloaded credit karma today for the first time in years. An American eagle credit card popped up that is apparently in my name. It was opened in July of 2024. I don't have a very common name.

The strange part: the card has a $4,200 limit with a $30 balance right now and whoever has the card has never missed a payment over 2+ years. The last payment was made August 1st, 26. There's also no way I would've been approved for $4,200 in 2024.

Could this be a possible mix up by credit karma?

Help Needed / Question Are Capital One "Offers" Just...Not Real?

14 Upvotes

I've tried using the capital one offers on the VX 10 times with various stores/merchants now and haven't got the advertised bonus a single time. I’ve seen many comments here saying the same thing. What gives? Has anyone actually got them to work? Recently I tried the Amazon offer for a bonus 1000 miles with a $25 purchase. I placed the order on Aug 26, Amazon charged my card and shipped the order on the 29th. But of course that didn't post until today, funny how the processing for these always takes more than 3 days when it's usually 2. All other offers I've tried say to click the link when you activate it and make the purchase. Regardless if I try that on my phone or computer there is never a payout even 90 days later. And yes, I disable extensions. This isn't a big deal to be fair, but rather scummy on C1's part. Just curious if anyone else has had this happen?

Discussion / Conversation Capital One shopping has 44x on HSN for me today

10 Upvotes

Posting this in case it's showing for other people too. Not the 88x that some people got a few weeks ago but still pretty good!

Edit: It's under offers, not shopping. Didn't realize those were different things.

If you search HSN it's actually 66x back

From what I have read, there might be a $1k cash back limit over a 3 month period, which maxes out around $1,500 of purchases. Other people have said that they weren't capped though. I bought $1,700 worth of stuff so we'll see.

Discussion / Conversation Rakuten cash back for BoA UCR approval boosted to $150

8 Upvotes

Just a heads up that this BoA UCR offer is now available as of last week and was just boosted to $150 today. This is in addtion to the normal $250 SUB for this card.
https://www.rakuten.com/shop/bofaunlimitedcashrewardscreditcard

Also the BoA TR offer from Rakuten is now $350, which is the highest I've seen it. Effectively a $600 SUB for a no AF card. https://www.rakuten.com/shop/bofatravelrewardscreditcard

Discussion / Conversation Closed: Citi Strata Elite. Downgrade options

9 Upvotes

AF came up this week and asked about what downgrade paths were available and unfortunately it was only ATT card of some sort that earns TY points or American Airlines cards.

Was hoping custom cash would still be available but was not. Guess it’s really toast.

As for the strata elite… just didn’t find good value in it. I still hold the Citi Prestige and it’s just a way better daily earner. That Blacklane credit was mostly useless.

Edit: I was not offered any strata cards. Meant to say AA.

Help Needed / Question First time opening any accounts

Hi everyone! I’m looking for a good first credit card and have seen that people like Discover It, CapitalOne Quicksilver, Chase Freedom Unlimited, and City Double Cash. What’s your favorite?

I’m also looking for somewhere for my savings. Anyone have a recommended savings/checking account?

I’ve never had any of anything before. I previously had a savings attached to a parent’s account.

Thanks in advance!

Card Recommendation Request (Template Used) Best card strategy for moving and paying for furniture/rent: Bilt, USAA 0% APR, or store cards?

4 Upvotes

CREDIT PROFILE

Current credit cards you are the primary account holder of:
- Apple Card — limit: $5,500, opened 12/18/2022
- American Express Gold Card — no preset spending limit, opened 5/14/2023
- American Express Platinum Card — no preset spending limit, opened 7/21/2023

FICO Scores with source: Experian FICO Score 8: 788, provided by American Express

Oldest credit card account age with you as primary name on the account: 3 years, 8 months

Number of personal credit cards approved for in the past 6 months: 0

Number of personal credit cards approved for in the past 12 months: 0

Number of personal credit cards approved for in the past 24 months: 0

Annual income $: $125,008

CATEGORIES

OK with category-specific cards?: YES
OK with rotating category cards?: YES

Dining $: about $677/month
Groceries $: about $277/month
Gas $: about $100/month for auto/transport overall; actual gas portion varies
Travel $: Variable. August 2026 was about $1,048, but that was a travel-heavy month and is not representative of every month.
Do you plan on using this card abroad for a significant length of time?: NO
Any other categories or stores with significant, regular credit card spend:
Bills & utilities: about $528/month
Health & fitness: about $270/month
Shopping: about $876 in August, but this varies
Pets: about $33/month
Entertainment: about $41/month
Home & garden: about $58/month currently
Major upcoming apartment/furniture purchases: approximately $5,000-$10,000 over the next several months

Any other significant, regular credit card spend you didn’t include above?: No

Can you pay rent by credit card? If yes, list rent amount and if there’s a fee for paying by credit card: Planning to pay around $3,350/month in rent. I am considering Bilt specifically to earn rewards on rent without a standard credit card transaction fee.

MEMBERSHIPS & SUBSCRIPTIONS

Current member of Amazon Prime?: yes
Current Verizon postpaid customer?: no
Current member of Costco or Sam’s Club?: no
Currently paying $13.99/month or more for Disney Bundle, Hulu, etc.?: yes
Current member of Chase, US Bank or any other big bank?: USAA
Are you or your spouse active US military?: NO
Are you open to Business Cards?: NO

PURPOSE

What’s the purpose of your next card?: Saving money

Do you have any cards you’ve been looking at?: Bilt, USAA cash-back/0% APR cards, Crate & Barrel card, Bob’s Discount Furniture card, Rooms To Go financing, and other general-purpose 0% APR cards.

Additional context:
I’m moving into a new apartment in Philadelphia and expect to spend roughly $5,000-$10,000 furnishing it over the next few months. I already have Amex Gold and Platinum, so I don’t really need another travel-focused card. I’m mainly trying to decide between opening Bilt for rent, using furniture-store financing, or opening a general-purpose 0% APR card.

USAA is currently showing me a targeted offer for a card with 0% APR on new purchases through my May 2028 billing cycle, a $200 bonus after $1,000 in spend by January 31, 2027, and 3% cash back on the first $3,000 per quarter in eligible categories. That seems more useful than opening furniture-store cards, but I’m wondering whether I should prioritize Bilt first or take the USAA offer while furnishing the apartment.

I’m comfortable paying the furniture balance down monthly and intend to have it fully paid before the promotional APR expires. My main concern is whether opening USAA now and Bilt shortly afterward is worth the additional inquiries/new accounts, and whether there are better 0% purchase cards for this situation.

Help Needed / Question Amex gold vs 3 percent cashback restaurant card

4 Upvotes

I’m not good at math and was just wondering if it’s worth it for me to keep the Amex gold with a $325 vs 3 percent cashback card for restaurant since I have chase freedom unlimited and Amex blue everyday
I spend about $2000 a month in both the categories combined would the $325 annual fee be worth it next year?

Card Recommendation Request (Template NOT Used) Credit Card for My "Construction Business"-ish thing?

3 Upvotes

I have a question about possibly getting a credit card (my first... so obviously I have some learning to go out and do) for what has unexpectedly become my main source of income. I've been doing renovation/handyman stuff, which started as a side gig and is just more profitable than my day job now. I don't even really know *exactly* what it is I do yet, I just keep asking people if they have anything they want done and keep saying "would you like a qoute?"

I've never had a credit card because I watched one of my parents destroy the familys financial situation with them as a teen on pure garbage. But I've been using those annoying mail-in rebates on all the materials I'm buying for clients and thinking "hey, this is pretty sweet"

So it got me thinking... what if on top of the rebates I'm getting for my business expenses... could there be a credit card that gets me a little bit more money back on construction materials?

Let me know what you think.

Help Needed / Question Tips Maximize Bilt Points/Rewards Booking Rent Day Trip Today?

3 Upvotes

Hi, I have a Bilt Blue card and am Silver status. I’m planning on booking a trip at Excellence Playa Mujeres on Rent Day (today, 9/1) to take advantage of the extra 1,000 points I’ll get from rent day. I plan to book directly through the Excellence website as they have the best price and we will use my husband’s AA card miles for our flights.

I currently only have 28.6k points.

Are there any other perks, discounts, points maximizing or point using/redemption tips I am not considering or taking advantage of that I should look into or use to book? Or any other booking/savings tips to look into for EPM?

Thanks!

Help Needed / Question New CC user: Question about how companies 'categorize' things and which card is better to use.

3 Upvotes

Went 36 years without a credit card; wish I would've started sooner, but better late than never, I suppose. I now have two cards: A Costco Anywhere Visa through Citi (I am a Costco member) and also an American Express Blue Cash Everyday.

Now, I see that the Amex card offers "3% back on groceries at US supermarkets". Meanwhile, the Costco Visa gives "2% back on all other Costco purchases" (other than gas and travel items, which give 5% and 3%, respectively).

I have two questions:

  1. Are these rewards on a per item or per vendor basis? For example, if I go to Meijer or Walmart, I'm assuming Amex considers them 'supermarkets'. But you can obviously buy things from both of those stores that aren't "groceries," like toys or clothes or whatever. If I go to Meijer and buy groceries/food and also toys/clothes, does Amex give 3% back on everything since it just considers Meijer a 'supermarket', or does it look at each item and give 3% back on only the things considered 'groceries'. I would ASSUME the latter, otherwise I could see this being abused, but just wanted to confirm.

  2. How would I find out whether Costco is considered a 'supermarket' and whether Costco food purchases are considered 'groceries' in Amex's eyes? Because obviously 3% back there is better than the 2% back Costco themselves offer. But something tells me Costco might be 'excluded' from Amex's grocery/supermarket category, but I'm not exactly sure how to confirm or check this for sure.

Thank you!

Card Recommendation Request (Template Used) homebody looking to maximize rewards opportunities

3 Upvotes

TL;DR: i’ve been putting all my non billpay spend on a 2% cashback credit card as I don’t travel by air very often (~2 or 3x/year). I’d previously had the Bilt card as well for rent points but didn’t convert during 2.0 due to reservations about my ability to make the most of it (rent is 45-70% of my monthly spend). My most significant expenses are recurring monthly expenses (rent, gym, activity classes, utilities, wifi, music/streaming/entertainment). Want to see if there’s a card worth using alongside or instead of my current card, whether that would be cashback or cb w/ flexible travel rewards. Thanks in advance for any advice.

CREDIT PROFILE

Current credit cards I am the primary account holder of:
* Wells Fargo Active Cash (2% CB)
* Wells Fargo Autograph (unused; rollover from Bilt 2.0 conversion)
* FICO scores with source: 766 (Experian FICO 9 via bank)
* Oldest credit card account age: 2 years
* Cards approved in the past 6 months: 1
* Cards approved in the past 12 months: 2
* Annual income $: 100000

CATEGORIES

* Ok with category-specific cards?: Not unless there’s significant uncaptured value (>$200/yr)
* Ok with rotating category cards?: Yes
* Estimate average monthly spend in the categories below.
* Dining $: 200
* Groceries $: 250
* Gas $: 0
* Travel $: 250 (variable - ~100 in metro is stable; some travel via rail; infrequent ~2-4x/yr air travel)
* Using abroad?: No
* Other categories or stores:
* Other spend: Gym membership/fitness (>150/mo), entertainment subscriptions (~45/mo)
* Pay rent by card? Yes, amount and fee: 2208 w/ 3%(?) fee
***NOTE: total monthly spend on my credit card at present tends to vary heavily (650-2000); yearly average is probably around ~$1500. Variance is generally due to either travel expenses or one-time purchases (i.e., furniture, splurge item, maintenance service)

MEMBERSHIPS & SUBSCRIPTIONS

* Verizon postpaid customer: Yes
* Big bank customer: WF

PURPOSE

* Purpose of next card: Other
* Cards being considered: Bilt Palladium (reservations have mainly been around not necessarily being able to maximize travel-oriented value combined w/ potentially low spend-to-rent ratio)
Robinhood Gold (I already have a subscription for the IRA match)

Help Needed / Question Chime Credit Builder Card Confusion

3 Upvotes

Hey y’all, I just got the Chime credit builder card and I’m just a bit confused on how it works. You can only use it if you put in money beforehand? Which is cool because there’s no way you can create credit card debt, however I’m just confused on how that would build credit. Can someone explain it to me a little in-depth thank you.

Help Needed / Question "Chase Marriott Boundless Denial Reconsideration – Reallocated Credit Option Denied, Next Steps?"

3 Upvotes

So l've been with Chase for 2 years now. I'm 4/24. I have Freedom Unlimited, Flex, Sapphire Preferred.

Total combined credit $18,500.

Credit scores EX 747/TU 750/EQ

  1. Gross annual income at $32,000-$34,000. Never carried a balance no missed payments. I applied for Marriott Boundless and was denied for the maximum credit they're willing to extend for my income. I called for reconsideration to move some existing credit in order to open this new card and was told it's not possible at this time? Anyone have any experience or suggestions?
