I seriously thought it was a video of someone brushing out some kind of partial wig or toupee when I first saw it.

Edited to fix the common phone fat finger ai instead of I because people keep telling me not to pay attention to AI. Jeez! Mistake purely my own human brain!

47

u/DieselHouseCat 25d ago

Cuy Fabio has entered the Chat.

BTW:

In Latin America, cuy (spelled cui in some regional variants) most commonly refers to the guinea pig, a domesticated rodent native to the Andean region that is traditionally raised and eaten as a high-protein delicacy.

Don't they eat them there?

65

u/waluigieWAAH 25d ago

They were domesticated to be food. Then the Europeans came and made them pets

20

u/MaddysinLeigh 25d ago

Iirc Europeans only kept them as pets after also using them as food.

5

u/Julesvernevienna 25d ago

you were also summoned by a friend?🤣

4

u/Skratt79 25d ago

These things are so fat calorie dense 1 feeds 4 people, you need to eat potatoes with them to absorb the fat. They are the gamiest little buggers too.

I unknowingly ate guinea pig at a hotel buffet in Quito

tastes like ... small birds, or chicken

62

u/CitizenHuman 25d ago

My dad also unknowingly ate it like 40 years ago. He was told it was rabbit.

16

u/slackfrop 25d ago

Yeah, cuy. Very common in Peru. I declined trying it.

→ More replies (9)

16

u/Wasatcher 25d ago

My sister and I had pet rabbits growing up but we ate all the offspring. My dad told her it was chicken in the rabbit stew for years until she came home from school early one day while we were halfway through butchering them 😭. After the secret was out we had whole rabbit and she ate something else lol

u/KancroVantas 25d ago

I really don’t like eating meat much less exploring types I’m not used to…I’d be so sad to unknowingly eat guinea pig.

40

u/Hilton5star 25d ago

Well, it is what they were bred for.

19

u/stillsympin 25d ago

Yeah it's the same as keep rabbits for meat. Very common in that area, especially the further you get from touristy stuff.

59

u/VascoJSC 25d ago

They were originally domesticated for meat. They eat grass (which humans cannot) and turn the indigestable fibers of tough mountain grasses into protein, they also grow quickly and reproduce quickly. Makes sense the Andean cultures would domesticate them.

20

u/TheStarsMist 25d ago

One thing many don't think of about this cultural staple of many South American countries is that they also do not have access to large grazing pastures. It is easier to raise the small mammals vs the flat acerage needs of big mammals. I haven't had cuy yet either.

Though when you look at this based on topography being far more varied it makes sense why they raise them for meat.

25

u/TheGrundleGrabber 25d ago

I’m not vegan and probably never will be, but your comment made me think: if we invented a machine that could create food out of inedible substances, we’d consider it an incredible scientific breakthrough.

This is essentially how we use many livestock animals: as biological machines that convert grass and otherwise unusable plant matter into food. I don’t know that I feel great about that. I’d never thought of it in those terms before reading your comment. I know that’s not what you were getting at, but this shit lowkey fucked me up.

29

u/Throwitaway252501 25d ago

Many animals have the same issue and it's why they eat meat. It's natural for us to eat meat, and there's nothing morally wrong with that Biology. The issue is, we know how to raise and butcher meat ethically, but we don't because that costs more money than capitalism is willing to part with. People should try to eat less meat and choose more sustainable meats where they can, not because eating meat itself is wrong, but the production of meat under capitalism is unethical.

8

u/TheGrundleGrabber 25d ago

Great comment. I think reducing consumption is ideal because it seems quite possible that even under a more ethical economic system, it may be infeasible to ethically produce the required amount of meat.

→ More replies (2)

5

u/Forward-Variety-8440 25d ago

this begs the question, is there any ethical consumption under capitalism?

9

u/MagicCaps69420 25d ago

We’re so removed from knowing what it’s like to harvest animals for food. I don’t mean to be graphic but for example it breaks my heart every time I put a knife through a lobster’s head to make a lobster roll. I grew up with chickens too and when we would kill them to eat was always awful. If you eat meat I think that’s something you should experience just to know what happens if you choose to consume animal products.

7

u/Ill_Maintenance_362 25d ago

It’s a coronet guinea pig. It has one rosette on its crown. A peruvian guinea pig has 2-3 rosettes to cause the hair to grow over the head and cover the face/eyes. A silkie guinea pig has no rosettes and the hair flows smoothly back from the crown.
