Alaska Bush pilots do this kind of thing all the time.

As long as you have enough air over the wings to make the plane buoyant they'll lift off with no runway. It happens during windstorms.

If you nose up the plane back as you throttle back, you can land on a dime.

127

u/-malcolm-tucker 10h ago

Yep. Airspeed versus groundspeed.

If there's almost enough air passing over the wings to generate lift before you take the brakes off, doesn't take much extra to get airborne.

The windsock in the video shows a good headwind.

9

u/leocanb 4h ago

I'm completely ignorant so don't at me. Would the head wind be inconsistent so a sudden change and the plane would drop our of the sky landing?

9

u/revdon 4h ago

Yes, but you do not turn the engine off until you land.

-15

u/ClosetLadyGhost 10h ago

Don't these come under bush planes

4

u/LacidOnex 6h ago

Bush plane would have space for cargo etc. This plane has no utility other than moving it's single occupant, so while you're not technically wrong, it's about vibes and this is more vibing with the stunt/race/hobbyist catagories

543

u/SouthSounder 14h ago

Wish we had a better view of the extra pieces added to the wings. I'd be interested to see just how extreme they went

180

u/drtyler91 7h ago

The wings have modifications, but the head wind is doing the heavy lifting

54

u/Lawdoc1 7h ago

Literally.

12

u/hmnuhmnuhmnu 5h ago

Not so heavy, tho. That plane looks stripped down to the bones

7

u/PineappleHairy4634 5h ago

they normally are out in the Bush(Alaska is where ive personally seen this) as they often dont know how much(or little) runway they may have

1

u/Lawdoc1 5h ago

True, in this case the "heavy lifting" is relative to the mass of the plane, which is quite low in this particular case.

8

u/MadamPardone 3h ago

A plane always takes off into the wind. So yes of course it helps but this is a STOL airplane at a STOL competiton.

Short take off and landing. This plane is purpose built to take off in the absolute shortest distance. They use them in the bush in Alaska and other places with little or no runways.

2

u/Spczippo 3h ago

And im going to assume that engine is way over powered for that small of craft. I wonder what the range would be. And is there an actual use for something like this?

1

u/Distantstallion 3h ago

Head Wind

It's called a propeller

1

u/Daevryn 2h ago

I doubt the propeller is causing enough wind to make that flag in the beginning of the video flap around. That would be what's called a head wind. Or a wind coming from the direction of intended travel.

3

u/GreenMonster34 5h ago

That's Steve Henry here's his youtube channel.

You can see this build, and his previous version, and get a good view of the wings. His whole team/family is great. I've spent some time with them at Sun n Fun.

54

u/prairieschooner 13h ago

How do that

163

u/kukienboks 13h ago

Much power make propeller much spinny, spinny propeller make much wind, much wind make very light plane go up. Hope helps!

26

u/overeasy-e 11h ago

Thank, help much.

21

u/Jamesonwordcraft 11h ago

Why use lot word when few word do trick.

3

u/alexwoodgarbage 8h ago

You jest, but this is very close to the foundational logic of character based languages like Chinese.

The issue is that some things end up needing multilple characters as a name and additonal characters to contextualize, so you don’t necessarily end up being more efficient.

13

u/dzelectron 10h ago

Not true. Wind blowy - wings wanna uppy. But once uppy - plane no longer stay put, so fly after wind. When fly after wind - wind no more make wings uppy. So need to pull forward against wind.

Here propeller goes wrooom, pulls through air. Wind again makes wings uppy, plane go weeee

5

u/TheEternalPharaoh 12h ago

Some sticky water stay-stay?

2

u/MeatSuitRiot 8h ago

Pakled smart!

1

u/Iguana_Enthusiast 8h ago

Thank you! Finally a qualified and scientific answer from an aviation expert!

18

u/RetroGamer2153 12h ago

Specifically? Hold both your brakes while you begin to throttle up. Just before you tip forward (and damage your prop), release the brakes and give it full thottle, while pulling the stick back.

0

u/prairieschooner 10h ago

The plane version of Pull My Finger

5

u/SoftLink5162 12h ago

Sheer fucking will

5

u/ReggieCorneus 10h ago

Also, take a look at the wings. They are modified to produce maximum lift but that in turn makes them very, very draggy so it is slow and inefficient.

Also also: no cargo and low fuel.

Also also also: headwind. The air is moving when the plane is standing still, just like if the plane was moving forward in still air. Land speed vs air speed. Land speed can be zero and air speed can be 40mph, and you don't need much more to lift off on a plane that is made for exactly this.

2

u/EarlyXplorerStuds209 10h ago

Kevin, is that you?

1

u/Euler007 7h ago

Buy a cub and take off facing a strong wind.

1

u/OldPersonName 7h ago

Airspeed is how fast the plane is moving through the air and is the number of importance for any speed dealing with performance. If you're sitting on the ground in a 30 knot headwind your airspeed is 30 knots before you even turn the engine on. A REGULAR Piper Cub with full flaps has a stall speed of like 33 knots. You also get a little help from airflow from the propeller so a heavily modified Cub in a pretty stiff headwind can basically levitate. You can find many of these videos online.

1

u/Marzipenn 7h ago

I’m not a pilot but I’m pretty sure it had a lot to do with the plane’s big bouncy wheels. It likely got some momentum up with some little jumps before the person started filming.

1

u/TheCuddlyCougar 6h ago

Plane is made of carbon fiber

1

u/Tsu_Dho_Namh 5h ago

A very light plane and a very strong headwind.

1

u/AJFrabbiele 4h ago

As others have mentioned the wind is important, but with these aircraft the propellor is doing most of the work: it moves air over/under the wing and tail creating much of lift for STOL. Plus these are modified to take advantage of the propellor creating "airspeed" around the wing.

1

u/OnTheEveOfWar 4h ago

Powerful engine and very light plane.

🤣🤣
Sure, those flags next to it are definitely experiencing 70mph winds. Yep. Definitely.

483

u/JuniorQ2000 14h ago

Might need a runway to land safely

464

u/LuNaTIcFrEAk 13h ago

World record landing in these competition is less than 10ft

134

u/noctalla 13h ago

That's actually insane.

113

u/vivaaprimavera 13h ago edited 12h ago

It's too expensive to hire an airport to hold those competitions but some supermarkets rent a bit of their parking lot for cheap /s

Edit: typo

27

u/406highlander 12h ago

Stop off for a McDonald's by landing at the Drive-Thru

12

u/boetzie 12h ago

I'd rather go to KFC to get some wings in this thing

1

u/Cabbage_Corp_ 4h ago

I’D LIKE A BIG MAC, SOME FRIES, AND A COKE!!!

(Muffled sounds coming from the speaker)

-1

u/octoreadit 12h ago

You misspelled Fly-Thru.

-3

u/406highlander 12h ago

The plane is slow - but not quite slow enough that McDonald's staff could throw together a burger, fries, and a shake before it got to the collection window.

2

u/mckulty 6h ago

That's what the app is for.

"Yep I'm using the app, my code is PJ32, Puddle Jumper 32."

3

u/octoreadit 12h ago

There is always a go-around to buy them some time 😂

1

u/406highlander 11h ago

Good point!

14

u/LuNaTIcFrEAk 13h ago

Parked planes like these with no one in them sometimes lift off the ground in strong winds.

8

u/Questioning-Zyxxel 12h ago

Even standard smaller planes gets swept away by stronger wind. Many smaller planes can lift at 60 mph and you can have wind gusts way above that.

2

u/SnooHedgehogs8765 11h ago

And that's what you're seeing here.

Amazing what one can do with a headwind of 40km/ph and a prop blowing a lot of air over your wing.

3

u/tackleboxjohnson 9h ago

They use headwind to cheat on airspeed a bit

1

u/BobsYourAuntie100 12h ago

Yeah but the guy flew out the front window

1

u/HomicidalHushPuppy 9h ago

When they say STOL (short take-off and landing) they mean it

1

u/mckulty 6h ago

With a 15 mph headwind you could land sitting still.

9

u/Imbendo 12h ago edited 5h ago

Theoretically with the right wind conditions you could land one of these bush planes completely vertically

3

u/MaleierMafketel 8h ago

With enough skill, one should be able to land them backwards.

5

u/willynillee 7h ago

I could land one with no skill, but I can only do it once.

29

u/Zealousideal_Good445 13h ago

Only a sand bar of less than 100 ft. This guy probably way less, like 20 ft. The record is 9 ft 5 inches. As a child I was a missionary kid. We lived deep in the jungle. Our mission had a STOL plane and a few crazy piolets to boot. You should see what we called a runway. I remember praying a lot better a flight!

1

u/Swissarmyspoon 7h ago

My grandfather had one of these planes. He used to use it to go clamming on any beach he could see, deliver supplies to homesteads around Alaska, and to hop back and forth across the Canadian border moving undisclosed products.

7

u/NobleK42 12h ago

I once shared an office with a colleague that used to be a commercial pilot. He once told me that he was always annoyed by movies where they land a plane on some short runway stopping just at the edge, and later take of from the same short runway, because taking off requires much more space than landing.

10

u/Rational_bakchod 13h ago

😅, got little too existed by takeoff that I forgot landing part

3

u/xXPhoenixBlueXx 11h ago

You can actually land these backwards (as in reverse) with the right headwind.

2

u/Questioning-Zyxxel 12h ago

They can be very sad to land on a windy day.

In one wind direction, it just wants to lift up/backwards.

In the other wind direction, 10 km of landing field isn't enough.

1

u/raycraft_io 7h ago

Maybe just a driveway

1

u/street593 7h ago

Actually it doesn't. These are bush planes and they land in the wilderness all the time. Any patch of dirt works.

55

u/comasxx 14h ago

Cartoon takeoff

23

u/Critical_Subwoofer 13h ago

It does, just a very small one

10

u/seweso 6h ago edited 6h ago

With enough cross wind....EVERY plan can take off without a runway.

Edit: No....every plane WILL take off with enough wind.

3

u/dingos8mybaby2 5h ago

I mean enough wind and you will take off with or without the plane

1

u/LukeSkyWRx 6h ago

Headwind

14

u/NoisyGog 13h ago

So cool. I’ve seen the RC models that look exactly like this, I didn’t realise they were based on a real plane!

8

u/Th3_Gh0st_0f_Y0u 12h ago

STOL (short takeoff and landing) bush planes

1

u/Imbendo 12h ago

See a lot of these in Alaska/Canada in remote areas dropping fishermen and hunters off

3

u/lockerno177 13h ago

how do the control surfaces respond so swiftly at almost no forward movement of aircraft?

10

u/Horseburd 12h ago

With the size of that propeller, the elevator probably has a decent amount of prop wash to work with.

3

u/pobodys-nerfect5 9h ago

I thought it was due to already high wind speed

1

u/Vuldriel 6h ago

both are true

4

u/notcomplainingmuch 12h ago

The width of a runway is plenty for landing and takeoff for these guys.

5

u/immamarius 12h ago

Drug dealers clapping their hands

3

u/Rational_bakchod 12h ago

This was the first thought that came to my mind when I saw the video

Pablo Escobar’s wet dream.

1

u/ReggieCorneus 10h ago

Not a lot of cargo.... You have to fly constantly.

3

u/ReggieCorneus 10h ago

Except any cargo will make this impossible. The bush planes still land short but we are talking about 30-50m unless winds are really, really beneficial. Empty planes can land much shorter, you can probably even land these with negative ground speed when wind is properly strong and the plane is empty.

The ability in very ideal conditions is different thing from doing it in real life where landing strips are where they are and not aligned with prevailing winds, and you have as much cargo as the plane can carry safely.

Bush planes just aren't very efficient or fast, and i think they need way more efficiency and speed. Don't know, i'm not a drug trafficker but.. if bush planes were the best, they would use them and maybe they do on short hops like just over the border.. But, you can't transport tons of drugs with these planes.

3

u/Harry_Isthatyou 8h ago

Drugdealers plane of choice

3

u/dieselmac 7h ago

But can it take off from a treadmill?

-1

u/Mattsuii 6h ago

Well…no. Airspeed (or more precisely, relative wind seen at the wings) is what produces lift. Treadmill does not create a relative wind (unless it’s running moving the plane forward)

And at that point it’s the same as the aircraft…moving forward.

1

u/LordMoos3 3h ago

Bud. No.

Motive force is applied from the propeller, not the wheels. The wheels spin freely.

It would take off the exact same way on a treadmill, but the *wheels* would be spinning faster.

3

u/Ser_Optimus 4h ago

How much space does it need to land?

4

u/Naughtyniceguy_ 4h ago

Depends on the wind

4

u/GrantATX 3h ago

This is a hot rod STOL airplane that was built to compete in contests for this very purpose. STOL = short take-off and landing. It uses an extremely light frame with a yamaha motor from a snowmachine to achieve incredible power to weight ratio which is the main reason it can do that. Saw it in person at a STOL comp in North Texas a few years back. https://www.kitplanes.com/fly-it-like-you-stol-it/

2

u/an_older_meme 13h ago

When I was looking at the Aviat Husky back in the early '00s they were a quarter million with a VFR panel.

2

u/gotthem30yroldknees 13h ago

What’s the (approximate) minimum wind speed over the wings for take off?

3

u/MonsterRavingLlamas 12h ago

Somewhere around 30-35mph if i remember correctly.

2

u/Wonkey_Kong 12h ago

The fuck?? Is that a Piper Cub on roids? I want one. 😎🤙🤙

2

u/separation_of_powers 11h ago

it sure sounds like it

I wonder if they swapped out the engine

2

u/Dexter_Adams 11h ago

Mexican drug cartels are taking notes

2

u/kireotick 9h ago

It looks really windy, so in reality it is already going fast through the air. Still impressive though, but it is not going from stand-still

2

u/AkTx907830 9h ago

It’s a contest at the Alaska state fair for bush pilots.

2

u/NonNewtonianResponse 8h ago

Me playing Aviassembly: today I'm gonna build a real jetliner

5 minutes later: oops another STOL bushplane

2

u/Guisasse 6h ago

This is so cool. He could actually land on a fast food drive through and lift off right in front of the employees.

How fucking awesome would that be to watch lmao

2

u/ostiDeCalisse 5h ago

Does it land the same way?

1

u/Feisty_Touch_ 13h ago

That propeller sounds like its about to break off

1

u/HombreDelMar247 12h ago

Who doesnt love these bush planes?

What's even more impressive is the spots the bush pilots land and takeoff from in places like Alaska.

1

u/Womgi 12h ago

Is it generating lift from the airflow generated by the propeller? As opposed to airflow from forward movement of the plane I mean

1

u/FlyingKittyCate 11h ago

Someone should invent a camera function that would be able to have the entire plane in frame. Something that rotates the aspect ratio or something.

1

u/therealjoe12 10h ago

Carbon cubs baby their power to weight ratio is nuts.

1

u/ManuC153 10h ago

But a lot of wind.

1

u/Maniachanical 9h ago

Looks like a Reno STOL drag plane!

1

u/tkeser 9h ago

not a runway but a walkway? crawlway? rollway? jump-offway?

1

u/Imaginary_Bottle_875 9h ago

Il a roulé sur au moins 4 m. Il a donc besoin d'une piste. Même très petite. À fortiori pour atterrir. Ce n'est pas un VSTOL.

1

u/waxy1234 8h ago

Da hui take off

1

u/Efficient_Sky5173 8h ago

It’s called helicopter.

1

u/Torebbjorn 8h ago

I guess it will never land?

2

u/Dankkring 6h ago

He doesn’t need a runway to land either.

Unless you meant land safely?

1

u/Cptawesome23 7h ago

Only fits one person however.

1

u/ParticularAd1735 6h ago

I want to see it land

1

u/cubedjjm 5h ago

Wonder how much HP that plane has vs a Piper Cub. As soon as he throttles up, you can hear that's not remotely stock. Revs way too high. Love it!

1

u/cactusplants 5h ago

How much weight can these typically hold? What's their range taking fuel and weight into account where physics comes into play etc.

I've seen these before used in Alaska and Canada but never really delved into them

1

u/vjcoin 5h ago

How does the back part of the plane lift up? Is it because of the lift coming from the blow of the propeller?

2

u/tauntonlake 5h ago

"Runways ? Where we're going, we don't need runways"!

1

u/okram2k 5h ago

notice those flags and the wind sock in the background, it's a very windy day which is helping a lot.

1

u/BOWRx 4h ago

Dog stars needed this

1

u/FinancialTraining239 4h ago

Deu um paço e já saiu voando 😂😂😂 precisou de menos área que um helicóptero

1

u/unreqistered 4h ago

i bought the Microsoft Flight Sim specifically to fly these planes … weill these and the orthopter from dune.

and the halo dropship

1

u/DeeDee_Z 3h ago

The airplane equivalent of a Standing Long Jump, eh?

1

u/wenoc 3h ago

There was some American hobby pilot that made a YouTube series on upgrading his red bush plane. It was super interesting and slightly like this. Can’t remember the name. Fun watch.

1

u/Lucifer_Samwise 2h ago

Pretty sure most planes need a runway for landing tho.. try sticking that landing coming in hot and stopping on 20ft of runway... Lol

1

u/RobbieTronic 19m ago

Interesting. Can someone give me a link to the plane?

1

u/dogwalker805 14m ago

but it did need a runway, about 5 feet

1

u/Droidatopia 12h ago

Obligatory "All of this effort just to achieve what helicopters have been doing forever" comment.

Still damn cool though.

5

u/Rational_bakchod 12h ago

You forgot range and operating cost

1

u/AThrowawayProbrably 12h ago

Muscle cars of the sky

0

u/parisianraven 13h ago

Looks so unstable. Like one gust of wind will mess it up and it’ll crash

0

u/an_older_meme 14h ago

I bet that's a half million dollar machine.

9

u/Rational_bakchod 13h ago

Actually it is around 200k and starts around 100k

6

u/Zealousideal_Good445 13h ago

I can't tell right off, but this is a modified Piper Cub or Super Cub. The Piper Cub ranges from 25k to 65k. A 100k with a STOL kit.A Super Cub modified for STOL( short take off and landing) will cost you between 150k to 350k. They are literally some of the cheapest air planes on the market. They are also some of the best for STOL flights. Now if you want to though some money at a STOL airplane you want to check out Darco HyperSTOL Which checks in at 2.9 M. The funny thing is that this Cub can hang right with Darco in a STOL compilation. It's really all about the lack of weight and how much HP and flaps you can add and how low of a stall speed you aircraft has. The Piper Cub is one of the most forgiving planes to fly, especially if you lose all power.

3

u/SierraHotel84 11h ago

It's none of those things. It's a Just Aircraft SuperSTOL kit aircraft highly modified by Steve Henry specifically for STOL Drag competition. https://www.wildwestaircraft.com/

1

u/Th3_Gh0st_0f_Y0u 12h ago

I think you meant Draco? The Mike Patey wilga which crashed a few years ago?

He's also made a modified cub called scrappy

-1

u/BigBlueMountainStar 12h ago

These planes are used to access hard to reach back country locations for fishing and hunting across North America

-3

u/Arkham_Survivor 13h ago

Landing? 😂 Goodbye runway..

4

u/5litergasbubble 13h ago

These planes can land in as little as 10 feet. Above average length driveways could technically handle it
