[UPDATED] "What Bike Should I Get?" Buying & Selling advice Mega Thread

The Mega thread for buying and selling advice is back, and will be updated biweekly!

There are far too many posts of people asking for personalized bike buying and selling advice. Per previous Mod actions, any posts about bike buying/selling advice that are not in this thread will be removed.

Here, those interested in giving feedback about your purchase or listing can offer it without every subreddit member being subjected to the same post dozens of times per day.

Topics to keep in the mega thread:

  • What bike should I get?
  • Is this a good deal?
  • Is this a fair price to sell my bike for?
  • What can I get for $xx?

r/dirtbikes Discord Server

What's up guys? It's still a work in progress - and I'm new-ish to managing a discord server, so if you have experience/want to help out shoot me a message!

To be clear: This is NOT a replacement for the sub. It's totally optional. If there's interest, I'd be open to streaming the SX races in the server. The Discord server will also be great for asking questions that would violate our rules in here such as asking what bikes are worth and what not.

My wife wants a dirtbike with NO clutch for trail riding. 5'4 and 160lbs. Would a KLX110R work? Anyone that height that can comfortably ride it? She is a beginner

Talk me out of buying another Beta

This year I said screw it, let me see what the hype was about - i got my first 2 stroke in 15 years for the PNW..

I ended up with a new Beta 200. Its possibly the most fun bike I've been on. I'll never tap it out, yet its gentle when I want it to be.

My wife rides bikes too..much different trails, much slower. She has a TTR125 and she is too big for it.

Today, she got enough courage to ride the Beta. INSTANTLY, her face lit up. She finally experienced a full-size bike. The Beta was so "confidence inspiring " as they say, and it was only 10 minutes. I let her ride it back and I took her TTR back.

Now she says theres no way she could ride the TTR again. I dont blame her.

She does want to excel in riding. She wants a bike that will grow with her. But I feel the biggest improvement today was just her first full-size bike, rather than an exact model.

Is getting another 200 a good idea? Im not crazy about an Xtrainer tho...

Mechanical Help Can I tighten my clutch basket nut using the rear wheel to lock it?

I put the transmission into 5th gear and held the rear brake to loosen the bolt, but I have no idea what I am doing and Google told me to do it then told me its dangerous after I did it. I don't want to spend 40 dollar on a holder tool so is it fine if I do it this way or will the gear blow up?

Son turning 12, has an e-bike, wants a classic dirt bike. What to target for a beginner who is

He's doing all sorts of research which is great, but his wish list is higher end... he's talking KX112, KLX140. Won't bother with the rest, but they MSRP above $3,000 which is way out of budget and we don't need a new bike. So having grown up a city boy without access to dirt bikes, I'm not sure where to start.

  • Used definitely makes sense.. craigslist? Facebook marketplace? or is there a good dedicated platform (like how Swappa is good for phones)

  • Anything youth is fine, but he's the size of a teenager already at almost 12yo. He's 5'4" 150lbs. Should I just stick to adult sized?

  • I don't know what a pit vs trail or the 'type' to look for much less particular specs or categories.

I'm sure this question gets asked all the time, so I should go searching, and I will. Thanks in advance for advice.

Bonnell 805 Release day

Unless I am mistaken the Bonnell 805 electric dirt bikes got released today. Did any of you buy one and ride it? I'd like to know what you got for OTD price and what your first impressions are. It seems like it could be the new best in class but I'd like to hear some unbiased opinions if there are any.

Is it bad to gear bog? (4 Stroke)

Im a pretty experienced rider but sometimes I’ll be in a too high of a gear going too slow. Of course I know I should shift down when I feel it but can it be stressful on the bike?

Mechanical Help Motor Seized (HELP)

So i have a 2006 ktm250sxf i was riding today and the motor seized kickstarter wouldn’t move and crank wouldn’t move. I got home and drained the oil it had some like black dust in it but it wasn’t a lot. After draining the oil the motor freed up and spins smoothly. I took the valve cover off and everything seems normal and the clutch cover. Should i put new oil and send it or take cylinder off and inspect everything?

Community Question Riding after a crash

Been 11 months since I had a nasty fall from a big jump. Broke my femur and a couple bones in my lower back. Needed a couple operations and many months of physio to get near normal again.
I miss riding immensely. Thinking to go back to trail riding, easy dunes in the desert etc.
But I have a tendency to push limits which is what I need to keep in check.
Anyone else ride again after a significant accident? How was it both mentally and physically?
I think I'll wait a few more months until I have full strength in my hips, but I frequently think about it and miss it.
Wife and kids are against me doing it but they won't stop me if I wanted to do it.
Any constructive feedback welcome! Thanks in advance

Alternatives to YZ125X

Looking for an older YZ125X. People saying 2005 and up is the way to go because of the frames. Also I live in Cali so I can’t register a new one to ride on the trails anyway so I’m limited to YZs from 2005 to 2021. Can’t really find an X model that I like from that time period. I was wondering what other bikes exist 2021 or older that are roughly like the YZ125X? Not asking for recommendations, just trying to see what exists. Preferably Japanese bikes. Thank you

Mechanical Help Dirtbike only starts with hot start, how to fix?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I've picked up a 2010 Husqvarna Te250 and it only seems to fire up when I pull the hot start lever in despite the engine being completely cold.

The bike also completely shuts off when I release the hot start lever, so it's idle and start up completely rely on me having the hot start lever pulled in.

It's a fuel injected bike, any helps and suggestions are appreciated.

Gnarly whats the sketchiest field fix that actually got you home

Snapped a clutch cable about four miles from the truck last fall. Ended up riding it back clutchless, which works fine right up until you have to stop. Killed it at a log across the trail and had to roll it down the bank to get going again.

The dumb part is I had a spare in the garage. Just never moved it to the pack. Finally did that this week, about a year late.

Curious what everyone else has limped back on. Zip ties, a stick, whatever was in someone else's pack. Feels like everybody has one of these.

Oh yeahhh only 10 hours on the top and bottom end. Just fully rebuilt with Wisco parts. Valves, jug, carb, everything has been gone through.

Okay sweet, you have the shop invoice?

Done it all myself man.

Awesome, can you show me your email confirmations or your receipts.

Oh I don't have any of that man. But don't worry, my 26 year old bike rips bro.
