Hi everyone! I’m Dominican, currently living abroad in Europe, and I’m preparing to buy an apartment in the Dominican Republic in the future.

About a year ago, I opened a USD account with BHD specifically for this purpose, so I could gradually save money toward the purchase.

Since I live in Europe, my income and bank accounts here are in euros. My plan would be to transfer money from my European bank account or Wise and have the funds arrive in USD directly into my BHD USD account.

I’m mainly looking to hear from people who have actually gone through this process, especially with larger transfers.

For example, if I were to transfer $25,000–$30,000 USD, what has your experience been with BHD? Did they place any limits on the transfer, hold the funds, block the account, or ask for additional documentation?

I contacted BHD by email, but the response I received was very general and didn’t really answer my specific situation. They gave me information about certain banks in the US and Europe, but my bank wasn’t listed. When I asked for clarification, they told me I needed to call.

Before I spend time calling and potentially receiving the same general information, I wanted to ask here:

For those of you living abroad who have transferred larger amounts of money into your BHD USD account:

What documents did BHD ask you to provide to prove the source of the funds?

Did they ask for an employment letter, payslips, bank statements, tax documents, etc.?

Do they accept documents in English, or do they require them to be translated into Spanish?

Did you have to notify BHD before making the transfer?

If the transfer was held or your account was temporarily restricted, how did BHD contact you?

Did they contact you by email, phone, or through another method?

If you live outside the Dominican Republic, how were you able to communicate with them and provide the requested documents?

Is there a direct phone number, email, or specific department that you can contact from abroad if there is an issue with the transfer or account?

I’m trying to prepare everything in advance, employment letter, payslips, bank statements, proof of source of funds, etc. so that if I make a transfer of $25K–$30K, I’m prepared in case they need documentation or verification.

I’d really appreciate hearing about your actual experience with BHD, especially from Dominicans living abroad who have transferred significant amounts into their USD accounts.

Looking to hear from anyone who has dealt with something similar in the Dominican Republic.
My family has had a house/property for decades and we have older notarized documents related to ownership/possession. We recently hired an agrimensor and had a new survey done.

The survey showed that the house is located inside a much larger parcel that currently has a definitive title (título definitivo) in a company’s name. The company’s parcel was created through a subdivision years after the house was already there, and the cadastral documents actually mention “ocupación de terceros.”
We were told that the company may need to agree to another subdivision so our portion can eventually receive its own title.
Before contacting the company, I’m getting an opinion from a Dominican real-estate attorney because I want to understand what rights the older documents and long-term occupation may provide.

Has anyone dealt with a similar situation in DR?

Did you have to purchase the land rights from the titled company/owner, or was there another legal process to recognize the existing occupant’s rights and obtain an individual title?
I’m not looking for legal advice—just interested in hearing real experiences and what the process looked like for you.

Recientemente he ido al supermercado nacional comprar aguacate y me di cuenta que dentro de las opciones que tiene hay uno que es el mas barato, que se hace llamar "aguacate criollo", para los que somos mas de 30, bien sabemos que esos aguacates realmente no son criollos, son injertos y demás.

Pero para la generación actual, estos aguacates son CRIOLLOS y punto.

Justo eso está pasando con la dominicanidad, hay muchísimas variables que se nos han dicho que son dominicanos, incluso como dijo Abinadel hace un tiempo "dominicanos de rostros diferentes" nosotros sabemos que NO, pero la nueva generación está interiorizando ese nuevo concepto del dominicano o criollo.

Mi opinión es que se está diluyendo la dominicanidad.

My dad is Dominican, we haven’t spoken in years & I don’t have a relationship with his side of the family. I live in the US, him in another country. Is it possible to work on getting dual citizenship (USA & DR) without his birth certificate or number? Can I just give his name and his parents names? I understand it could take longer but is it possible?

I'm interested in knowing if/how you got them to work with the power distribution we have down here (110/220v) as well as any insights you might have.

Do they work well here? Does the electric bill get too high compared to normal appliances?

I’m Dominican and have been living abroad for more than 15 years, so I’m not very familiar with the Bayahibe area anymore.

I’m originally from Santo Domingo, and most of my family now lives abroad as well. Whenever I visit the DR, I usually end up staying in Punta Cana because I love being close to the beach.

My husband and I are thinking about buying a small apartment very close to the beach, mainly for ourselves. We’d like to spend part of the year there while working remotely, enjoy the beach and have access to a pool. When we’re not using it, we might rent it out.

So I’m wondering: Would you choose Dominicus or Bayahibe?

I’d really love to hear from people who actually know the area or live there. Is Bayahibe somewhere you would genuinely enjoy spending a few weeks or months at a time? Which areas are the nicest? Are there any areas you would avoid, especially when buying an apartment?

We’re not looking purely as an investment. Having a place where we can relax, work remotely and enjoy the beach is the main goal, with rental income being a bonus.

I grew up in the Dominican diaspora in the Northeast, around a lot of Dominicans, but I was always more into alternative/underground stuff—skating, punk, indie, reggae, random niche scenes, etc. In NYC especially, that world is big and diverse enough that I’ve always felt pretty at home in it. There are tons of Dominicans in it too, but obviously it’s a mixed scene.

Growing up, I think I just accepted that Dominican culture was one thing and all that other stuff was “gringo” shit. My Dominican identity came from home and family, while the rest of my interests developed somewhere else.

I’ve been coming to DR every few years since I was young, but always with family. Only recently have I started coming on my own and actually meeting people here, and it’s given me a very different perspective.

There are young Dominicans here who are into the same weird, alternative stuff I am, and seeing that is honestly really cool. Not because I thought Dominicans couldn’t be into those things, but because I never really thought of them as part of Dominican culture itself. They’re just Dominican and this happens to be their thing.

There’s also a little ego check in realizing that some of the things I thought made me different or interesting aren’t particularly unique. But that’s kind of secondary to the bigger feeling of realizing I may have had a much narrower idea of Dominican culture than I knew.

I actually regret not coming here more on my own in my 20s and getting to know people. I’ve been here plenty of times, but I was always experiencing DR through family.

Now I’m realizing I probably could’ve felt at home here in ways I never understood before.

Anyone else have a similar experience?
