Like, they connect some dots in your fic that you didn’t even consider. But now you’re sitting there reading the comment and are like “dang, that’s good.”

Discussion Genuinely how do others write long fanfiction??? Asking as a former oneshotter new to the game

Hi! I'm writing my first long fic. The first one I am going to try and complete anyway. Before I would write a few chapters, post them as I go...then give up and delete them...trying to avoid that again.

I'm currently 47,000 words, four chapters. I've debated giving up because of how admittedly stupid the fic seems but at the same time, there are times when it is very fun to write and also I'd just feel like I wasted my time if I gave up now. This has taken me 21 days so far, is that good is that bad? I'm not sure. I'm trying my best to take it at my own pace.

I've been trying 2,000 words a day. Sometimes more or sometimes less. It's easier for me to do it in these small chunks but this leads me to wonder how do other people do it? Especially around lives that are probably busier than mine?

I've always wanted to write a long fic because I've consumed so many of them in the past. What probably took someone months to write or even years only took me a week or if it's super beefy, just one month.

I guess I am also looking for tips. Sometimes I get stressed out. Other times not. Other times I doubt my work even when I've a small pool of commenters and 8 kudos. Someone liked my fic, and that's enough. But then I also overthink things a lot, possibly making my fic more complicated than what the reader is blindly subjected too and I don't want to feel this way.

I just want to write something that I enjoy writing but there is also this pressure upon me weighing me down.

I have no clue how long it will be, how it will end, but I've at least had a few catalysts for inspiration. The only problem? Writing the middle chunk to get to those inspirations.

Ugh.

Discussion How to actually write good whump?

So, I love reading whump. Comfort? No comfort? Emotional whump? Physical whump? Whatever the whump, I love it (all this to say, I'm not at all uncomfortable with the idea of it).

With whumptober coming up, I'd like to try writing something whumpy. The problem: I think my whump writing is way worse than my other works. I don't think my writing is Shakespeare level by any means, but the whump I write? It comes out so stiff, like I'm just writing a boring paper or something. Even if I include all the tropes/injuries that would be considered quite whumpy, it seems so wooden; not at all like something where you'd actually be nervous about the characters.

I know lots of whump authors with amazing works, and I've tried to take notes from them, but no matter what I include, mine never turns out good. I write injuries by showing not telling (i.e., character reactions rather than a laundry list of injuries), there's a reason for the whump, etc.

Curiously, I'm decent at emotional whump, but physical? Hard no. I published a one-shot a few months ago that mainly deals with the emotional aftermath of the whump, and I'm proud of it. Conversely, I dug up a whumpy longfic from my drafts, and it is the stiffest writing ever, even when it has tropes that make other fics good. It's not so much a question of uninformed writing or not enjoying the pain, more so I just don't enjoy my own writing style.

So, my question is, how can I write whump better, make it hurt more, more impactful, etc? Thanks for any insight!

Discussion Does anyone remember this old fan fiction site? (minimal information)

I've been trying to remember the name of it for awhile now. It was kind of popular in 2008-2011. I remember it was very basic HTML with red and grey colouring and had a huge in memorial banner across the top of it with a picture of a guy sitting on a couch I believe. It was more so known for bandfic, I think, but it had all kinds of categories and I believe it started with an A?

I know this isn't a lot of information, but I'm just curious if it even sparks anyones memory just a little bit cause I'm starting to believe I made it up haha.

(I think it also hosted the infamous MCR butter lube fic if anyone remembers that???)

Recs Wanted Unexpected mercy/kindness

Any fics with a character who thinks something horrible will happen to them at the hands of the other character(s), but the other character(s) just want to help them.

Preferably not something tagged with Mercyfic since I've already gone through most of those. I'm open to any length and pretty much any ship (there doesn't even have to be romance). I'm fine with arranged marriage trope, slavery au, etc.

Recs Wanted Long run fics of Animes/Cartoons

Fics that change everything related to those series, or follow canon but at some point there's a divergence.

Examples:

Dragon Ball Dynasty (Goku's Family revives)

JJK Minus One (What if Junpei didn't die, What if Geto never became a curse user)

Green Tea Rescue (Izuku has another quirk besides OFA, Ochako is introduced early, Toga isn't a villain)

Celebrate Reader messaged me on TikTok

Hiii so basically I created a TikTok account to post the behind the scenes of my fics and said that in an Author’s Notes (AO3). One of my readers texted me on TikTok and we’ve been talking a lot and it’s been honestly great
At one point at like 2 AM, she got me so hyped for the next chapter that I went and edited it and posted it at 3 AM when i was planning on posting it the next day, just so that she could read it before sleeping
Point is, comments and interactions can really motivate authors so never hesitate!!! :D

Activities and Events "What's My Fandom?" Excerpt Challenge

Hello! Thought I would contribute a fun little game that I just thought about.

Our objective is simple; you must write an excerpt with a hard limit of 300 words for your comment here. Readers who see your work must reply with a guess for which fandom you're writing for. If they get it right, reply with "Solved!" but if not, you can give them one hint only, so they can try again. Lastly: before you post your excerpt, you must reply with a guess for one other excerpt post (they do not have to be right, just make a guess and that counts).

The game is active until Sept. 4th. Have fun, everyone!

Discussion Ever leave a comment that altered the stories direction?

I once left a comment on a Batman story that ended up actually helping the author finish it when they were having workers block, by pointing out things in the story that made it so that certain ideas wouldn’t make sense anymore. Anyone else have any stories of doing something similar?

Writing Questions Looking to take a break from writing anime/manga fanfiction.

Upvotes

Lately, I feel like my mind is going haywire.

I've been writing fanfiction for an anime/manga since 2022, and I still really enjoy it and read it repeatedly without problems.

However, lately, I've realized that I don't have the motivation, or I don't know, I'm lacking ideas to finish the fanfictions I write for this specific anime. I have three fanfictions with chapters already posted, and other ideas in progress.

Like, I have other manga that I've recently become interested in, and I want to write fanfictions for them too, and take a break from writing fanfictions for this anime/manga I've been writing since 2022.

However, I'm afraid of losing the knack for writing the characters, etc., of this anime/manga once my enthusiasm is renewed and I want to write for it again.

What should I do? Has anyone else encountered this same problem? How did you solve it?

Discussion People who write many fanfics

I have 5 Kamen Rider OCs and I plan to write a fanfic for all of them.

For example: writing 2 fanfics at the same time.

These OCs are not part of a shared universe.

The question I want to ask is: how do you manage your writing time if you're writing more than one fanfic at the moment?

Discussion Drop the title of one of your recent fics and share the story behind it

It could be where you got the inspiration for the title or how the title relates to the fandom or a theme in the story. Maybe the title is descriptive of what the reader could expect.

Please feel free to share the fandom or a link in your answer.

It doesn't have to be your most recent fic if you feel like there's another one you want to share.

Writing Questions Thoughts on Fileverse/DDocs?

I've started to see a lot more buzz about this alternative to Google Docs, especially on Tumblr. On first glance, I like how similar their functionality seems to be to Gdocs, but I'm wondering if anyone else has had any experiences with them, if they're trustworthy, etc? I had tried out Ellipsus previously in the past, but it didn't have a lot of the features that I need, and I kept having huge issues with it not syncing. So I'm still on the hunt for a good alternative to Google Docs.

Discussion am i being scammed?

Safe to say I (18f), am dumb as fuck.

So, I took to tumblr to promote my fic (Abigail Hobbs, HannibalNBC), as one does, that I’ve been working on for a while. I’m proud of it.

Someone commented, they asked if it’d be okay if they read over my work and offered critiques and suggestions. I’ve been in dire need of a beta reader. Naturally, I accepted the offer. Wow, look at this, I can get actual concrete advice instead of a half hearted “It’s good” from a friend I asked to read it.

So, they read my first chapter. They gave solid advice, the good and the bad. I’m like ‘Wow, I’ve struck gold with this beta reader!!’. The account and the person seem legitimate enough.

Then.. they ask me a favour. I say ‘Of course! Depending on what it is, that is’. Because I’m stupid. I should have said no. I’m a pushover. I’m working on it, I swear.

They tell me that they are starting out on upwork (a site for freelancing), and need some support, and if I could place even a small order it would be appreciated. I am agoraphobic. I don’t work. I rarely even leave the house. I am penniless.
I tell them as such.

BUT, I offer to promote their services on my tumblr (baring in mind, I don’t have a large sphere of influence). I do that, blah blah blah, and I say that whenever I scrape together some money I will be sure to put some of it towards their cause. I want to be nice. I don’t want to profit off of their services without paying them back somehow. I feel bad.

I made some money dog walking, I’ve been able to do that as I’m in recovery (yay!), so because I’m gullible af, I sent a text saying I came across a bit of spare money, I’d make a small order. Not much, which I apologised for. Turns out there’s a fee to make the first order, I don’t have the money for that, so I can’t.

I’m hashing over this series of events. The entire time I’ve feared it was a scam, because I am neurotic and skeptical as a person. I don’t listen to my gut, though. Dumb, I know.
I just don’t know. I found out it’s not normal to ask for money for these services (in fanfic world) because of legal problems and just the fact that Fanfiction is about community. I thought it was weird.

I’m afraid they’re feeding my work into AI, or using AI to analyse it, and taking advantage of my situation to get money out of me. I’d block, but I’m also afraid that they’re a legit person and I’d be stripping them of work. Not to mention, I don’t know what account they used to read my story because they left no comments, votes, didn’t save it to their story list or anything. So if I blocked on tumblr, nothing is to stop them from doing what they would like with my work because I don’t know who they are.

Does this sound like a scam? Sorry for the long-winded rant, I’m just stressed af about this.

Update : I learned my lesson, and the account in question has since been blocked, reported and no money was made :))

Venting Am I doing something wrong?

Upvotes

I’ve been writing fanfics for as long as I can remember. I remember falling in love with my first story I’ve ever read on fan-fiction.net, reading people’s comments who give their thoughts and love for the story just as much as I have, and It inspired me to write my own stories too. I’ll admit, my first fanfic story I’ve ever written was down right terrible. Evident by the fact that even people in the comments pointed that out to me in, well, not a nice way. But those rude comments fueled my fire into bettering my writing style and over the years I darn well did. I’m happy at how far I’ve come.

However, in spite of my progress and betterment of my writing, I can’t help but notice something that has been bugging me for a while now. You ever had that moment where you put so much time, commitment, and effort into a project you’re passionate about? You spend night after night staying up to writing that one specific chapter. You write the words, you edited them, proofread it to ensure there aren’t any errors/mistakes that’ll raise a reader’s brow, and poof—you post it. Only then do you go to bed and check on it the next morning.

When morning comes so do the notifications regarding your story. The likes are there; the saves/kudos are there; and the comments. But the post comments is not what makes me angry. It’s the everyday soulless bots that post a comment to my story repeating the same song over, and over, and over again. And if it isn’t a bot, the comment section remains mostly empty. Yet, when I look at other people’s work (especially ones who I love reading from) whether they’re short chapters from 1 to 3, or long chapters from 20 to 40, I see whenever they post a new chapter that they get new comments every 2 to 5 seconds.

Seeing that everyday has left me with an uncomfortable question: am I doing something wrong? What am I doing wrong but they’re doing right? I followed the rules, I followed every steps like every other author in terms of writing, and I even improved my writing. Yet, why do I feel like all my hard work and efforts were moot? I’ve remind myself everyday that like me, people have lives outside of the internet. People who have jobs, school, and maybe even doing their time in college.

But I just can’t help but think this way.

Lost Fic Looking for a deleted Rick and Morty fanfic - Pavlovian conditioning / Grilled cheese sandwich

Upvotes

Hi everyone, I'm looking for an old, dark/psychological Rick and Morty fanfiction. The main premise is that Rick uses Pavlovian conditioning on Morty. Every time Morty goes through an extremely traumatic experience or mission, Rick makes him a grilled cheese sandwich to force an emotional reset and calm his cortisol levels. It was likely posted on AO3 or FFN. Does anyone have a backup, the author's name, or a Wayback Machine link? Thanks!

I’m fairly new to smut writing and don’t have a lot of experience shall we say so I’m surprised my work got so popular. Hehe 🤭 I guess the smut writing research payed off.

Recs Wanted Fics that make you feel warm and tingly

Recently, I read a fic where the two MC's were sitting on a couch being crass and adorable together and it made me smile with warm fuzzies inside and I realized I hadn't read a fic that's done that in a long time. Instead of retreading old ground, I was hoping someone could recommend something that does the same for them. It doesn't necessarily have to be sweet and fluffy, simply evoke all those gooey feelings.

I'm reading ship fics for:

Arthur/Eames

Sokka/Zuko

Allison Argent/Kira Yukimura

Draco Malfoy/Harry Potter

Asami Sato/Korra

Erik Lehnsherr/Charles Xavier

Loki/Thor

But I could be down for a good recommendation that's not any of these, especially if it's in the same fandom

Lost Fic Four Days by SignOfThree (Spider-Man fic)

I’ve been reading up to chapter five of this fic on AO3 but struggled to find chapters six through nine. If anyone has a download that would be awesome, or any of their other work that is The Little Things or The Third Option.
