Sub Updates – Call for Feedback

Hey Rams,

I wanted to get some feedback regarding two rules I'm considering adding in response to new trends in the content on this sub.

1. No posts speculating about financial aid situations.

There has been a huge increase in posts in recent years regarding financial aid. I understand that it's a massive part of the college decision-making process, but the vast majority of these posts get little to no engagement. This is because the financial aid process is opaque – aid package sizes differ from year to year, institution to institution, and person to person. Similarly, what one person considers to be "good" aid might not be enough to another person. We can also safely expect that no one from the Fordham financial aid office is lurking on this sub and handing out the guidelines for merit aid.

It's very difficult for anyone to give another person financial advice without knowing a lot of personal details like how much their parents make and are willing to contribute, which is information that should generally not be shared publicly.

Because the financial aid situation varies so wildly, I'd like to implement a ban specifically on posts asking for speculation about an individual's financial aid package size, whether it's good/bad, or how much to expect in appeal. For example, this ban would cover posts like "Is $35k good?" and "Is Fordham generous with aid?"

This ban would not cover posts comparing a package at one institution vs another (like "$10k at Fordham vs $5k at Fairfield?") or posts asking about when to expect aid packages/appeal, when the first payment is due, or other logistical questions. Those are easier for people to answer and get more responses anyway.

2. A ban on AI-generated content farming.

This issue just arose in the last day or two. Shoutout to u/ArchAuthor for bringing this to my attention. There were two posts on back-to-back days by separate accounts asking questions about the student experience at Fordham in an overly wordy, AI-generated content way. Looking into the accounts, I noticed that they each only had two comments on posts and the comments were identical – "I agree" and "interesing" on 8+ year-old accounts. These accounts are clearly farming information for some type of aggregate service.

I'm going to leave this post up for a few days before implementing any rules changes. Let me know if you have any recommendations.

Should I transfer?

I just started my freshman year at Pace. I am a finance major and am on the swim team. I have had a great time so far my roommates are great and the team is very fun and inclusive. I like it here, but think I could do better academically.

I am from an upper mid class family not from ny. We do not qualify for much fafsa, but do not have the funds to pay full tuition. I got 40,500 yearly scholarship from pace with academic and swim included, academic being most of that number. If I keep at 3.7+ this semester, what kind of academic aid could I get from Fordham as a transfer?

Also I would like to ask for opinions on if this transfer is worth it. I love swimming and if I transfer I would not be swimming for Fordham. I think I’d be okay with this because although it’s been a big part of my life, I do not plan on swimming taking me anywhere career wise. I would also take any opinions on how much better Fordham finance is than Pace. To my knowledge it is quite good for a non target school.

All advice and opinions are much appreciated.

RHA question

Hi, I'm a freshman at the Rosehill campus. I'm considering applying to RHA. Can anyone explain to me the actual work that candidates have to do? Also, does joining RHA benefit me if I want to apply to be an RA in the future?

Accepting that i won’t have the typical college experience as a commuter

Before school started I really was so optimistic, i was going to join clubs and put myself out there and have fun. And i did those things but even then it’s difficult. Seeing friends I did make all go out together on weekends and every night knowing I can’t. Even a lot of clubs i really wanted to join, I can’t because they meet 7-8-9pm. I accepted it and it’s fine since college honestly really is just for academics but I have to live with knowing i’m missing out on a integral experience everyone else gets to have

Paying six figures to live with brown water, bugs, and dirty bathrooms in Walsh.

I want to lay out what living in Fordham housing actually looks like right now, because the marketing doesn’t match reality.

Walsh apartment-style. The bathroom came filthy from last year and still hasn’t been properly cleaned. We had brown water running from the taps for a full day. There are bugs in the unit. This is what tuition and housing fees pay for.

On top of that: $700 in textbooks for required classes I didn’t choose, and clothes already stolen from the laundry room in the first week.

I’m not posting this to just vent. I want other students to say whether you’re dealing with the same thing so admin can’t pretend it’s one complaint.

A nap

Is there anywhere quiet at lincoln center campus where a person could just squeeze in a nap? Im a first year and I’ve been cursed with almost a 2.5 gap period. I just wander around campus and go explore the area but in reality I just want a nap. Where should I go?

best places to waste time + potentially make new friends at LC

Post image

hi guys

I have unfortunately been cursed with a horrendous schedule this semester, and on Tuesdays this semester, my first class will be at 8:30am (not the main problem), which runs until 11:15am, and then I'll either have to spend the rest of my time on campus/go back home uptown until my next class at 6pm on campus, which then runs until 9:45 (this is the main problem)

so my question now is... what are some of the best places to waste/spend time in/around campus at LC? at least, places that aren't the library or cafeterias, to potentially make new friends? I've lowk been struggling bigtime to make friends since my return to classes unfortunately (esp as a commuter) and I reallyyyyy want to seriously try and lock in and make closer connections this semester (because all of the ones I've made in the past never seem to extend outside too deep/far from the class/from classwork) so I would reallyyyy appreciate any recs esp from people who are currently dorming at LC or who exclusively attend classes at LC

thanks!!!

note: I am a junior :)

freshman year single?

hello!

i have developed a lot of unique medical needs that i prefer to take care of in a private setting.

is there any chance of getting a single at this school?

primarily asking for LC as that’s my first choice, but if rose hill is more accommodating, of course that comes before any location preferences.

thanks!

Already wanting to transfer

I'm a first year student at LC and I feel like I already want to transfer to a different school. Although it's universal to do in college, I feel like all people do is drink and party. Plus, I feel like the city isn't for me now that I'm here. Is it worth sticking it out at Fordham?

Edit: I'm an Economics major considering transferring to Bentley after my semester at Fordham. Is Fordham worth staying for their Economics program either? The facilities here seem mediocre in comparison to other schools too, and it's only defining feature is that it is in Manhattan. It seems more difficult to find an apartment or job post grad or even before graduation than Boston.

Dean's Scholarships

Hi all — applying to Fordham's LL.M. program this cycle and specifically interested in the Feerick, Treanor, and Martin Dean's Scholarships (100% tuition, 500-word essay on embodying the dean's character traits).

Does anyone know someone (or is anyone themselves) who's received one of these in past years? Trying to get a sense of:

  • What kind of professional/academic background made a strong case
  • Whether certain concentrations/interests seemed to align better with a specific dean's scholarship
  • Roughly how competitive it is (how many are awarded per cycle, if anyone knows)

Not trying to game the essay — just want a realistic read on what the committee is actually looking for before I commit to a narrative angle. Any insight, even secondhand, appreciated!

Feeling so alone

Got to rise hill a few days ago and I’m just having such a hard time making friends. Everyone wants to go out to the local bars but I’m just not up for that. How do I find friends that just want to generally just want to hang out and stuff? Also feeling screwed because I don’t have a roommate so I’m like completely alone.

Best gym near Lincoln Center for lifting?

Hey guys, I’m living in McMahon and trying to find a gym within walking distance.

I checked out RamFit and it’s way too small. I’ve been lifting for a few years, so I really want at least a decent gym.

Where do you guys actually go to lift around here?
