True, sure. And then they realized GTA RP was what was keeping the game so relevant years later. So much so that they bought and brought them on because they know they can make even more money.
People always say this that GTA RP is the reason GTA is still popular after all these years yet casually ignore the fact that Online still has full servers 24/7 13 years later. I can log onto online any time of the day & know I’m going to see people playing. How many other online games can say that outside of a handful of competitive shooters & WoW?
I mean there's basically no other game that has sold as well as GTA V so obviously even after all this time there would still be a large playerbase. The only online game that has sold better than GTA V is Minecraft, which also happens to have a way larger playerbase today too.
When comparing to how many active online players relative to how many owns the game that doesn't play it anymore GTA V probably does rather poorly, I have no friends that actively play GTA V anymore for example, but we still play other games similarly old such as War Thunder and Siege.
I think it’s in the context of PC players. Although PC also always had full servers too, I seriously imagine it was kind of a gateway to modding anyway since every server also had 3-4 hackers/modders. So much so that the gta on pc forums warn players away from playing on vanilla online servers because you can get caught in a ban by just being present on the server with them.
I'm here to remind you that the game has no servers other then servers what host your data like character details, cloud saves and matchmaking of sorts.
I remember early Gears of War games using peer to peer was horrible online .It always favored the host in ping and input lags So the majority of online matches decided on which team got the host.
I really hope E Days and GTA VI got a normal online server, or it gonna sucks again.
Probably, my point is GTA is still popular after all these years because of Online. Outside of the Reddit hivemind that seems to have a raging hard on for RP you’d be hard pressed to find people that even know what GTA RP is let alone have played it.
GTA RP definitely split the playerbase with its different gameplay. I'm not sure about now as much as a few years ago, I don't really watch gaming streams often any more, but if you pulled up GTA on Twitch, nearly everyone streaming was playing FiveM RP. I can't even remember the last time I saw someone streaming the vanilla Online.
hehehe RP means Role Play, not regular player. They are referring to the PC modded servers focused around well, role playing. I am not a PC player so I dont know a ton, but its basically some online servers that are completely modded and the game runs as its own world, where players go in to basically live normal lives, get jobs, or be criminals, or cops, etc. And the modding is for things like the game having its own mechanics to like arrest people and putting them in jail for a while, different jobs, its own economy, and even areas modified in the map. Its pretty impressive and players take the roles VERY seriously. Im pretty sure its completely separate from the normal game at this point, as in, the DLCs we get, they dont even care to add them lol.
Its a completely different experience if you are into that sort of thing.
And yeah it seems that Rockstar hired some of the creators or something some time ago, so people expect the new Online to incorporate RP elements.
And what they are discussing about, is that GTA RP has been VERY successful in streaming platforms for years, so it definitely has helped keep the game alive.
I did just that and do you know what happened within the first 7 minutes of being in an online lobby?
The whole server was teleported to the hackers apartment where he autoshotgunned us all down.
We all respawned, some put on passive mode, yet he flung cars at 100mph at you so you died anyway. Kept getting away from him? He'd spawn the armored truck on you so you'd glitch inside and float around, unable to press anything/ leave the lobby.
The online community is STILL plagued with copious amounts of hackers. P2W was barely an idea in the CEOs heads by the time i was quitting due to all the hackers, a year after release on PC.
GTA 6 will be exactly the same, if not even worse due to the immense popularity of the series to date.

You're not alone.
