Before posting a photo, you should read this.

1.7k Upvotes

So you found a photo that you think has a spirit or ghost on it, before you post it and get upset about 30 people saying it’s a piece of dust or a bug, you may want to read this!

BEFORE DOING ANYTHING

Do read the posts

https://www.reddit.com/r/Ghosts/comments/deki6k/explanation_of_orbs_aka_backscatter/

and

https://www.reddit.com/r/Ghosts/comments/icziuc/ring_doorbells_security_camera_videos_and_false/

As these really do have useful information on how to spot particle orbs, lens flare and insects crawling over lenses which do make up most of the post in this Reddit community channel.

It is common for people who believe they are haunted to take lots of photos and assume that any “orbs” must be related to this. In fact, it’s quite easy to photograph orbs. If you can’t see the orb then it’s not there. People might say that cameras can pick up ‘orb’ energy but a lot of them just don’t understand why digital cameras tend to easily pick up particles (dust, dander, hair, insects).

If you have read the above and are sure (or not quite sure) then read on.

BEFORE POSTING

Make sure you have the original photo downloaded or posted from the same device the picture was taken from. Having a photo shared from a social media site, screen grabbed on a phone, photographed from a screen or been email shared will likely to be low resolution and suffer from further compression which destroys any fine detail and will generally be useless.

If the photo is just a photo then scan the photo in at least 300 DPI and save it as a “.PNG” image. If you don’t have access to a scanner then you can take a photo of it but take it in a brightly lit room and don’t use a flash to reduce reflections on the photo.

Use the original resolution of the photo, do not rescale, resize, brighten the image to make posting easier.

If you have to edit the photo to remove people then draw the smallest black filled box you can to hide their face or them. Don’t crop the picture or remove large chunks of the picture. Keep the picture the same same size. Once edited, save / export the image as a “.PNG” image as this will keep the JPEG image as it is (if you resave it as a JPEG it recompresses the image in a lossy way so that fine detail tends to get lost) if the paint program has it then make sure that “Save resolution” is checked and that you save “EXIF information”.

If you must highlight anything in the picture (to show where you think the paranormal image is) then use a bright colour that can be seen easily, use a transparent box with thin lines and draw it in the general area of what you want us to see, do not cover anything nearby. Save it as a “.PNG” as above. If you do this then make sure you post the original too.

If you want to change the contrast or brightness of a photo then again do so but save as a “.PNG” as above and post the original for comparison. If you have other pictures from the same area that were taken at the same time then post these too as comparison photos.

If the photo is from a place you can visit again easily then take more pictures of the same area using the same camera, try to take it at different times of the day and try to take a picture at the same time of day the original was at. Also, take pictures of the surrounding area and close up images of the original location.

It is important to note that even “taking the picture in the same place” is going to mean that you will be taking the picture at different angles, heights and places which will cause images to change.

POSTING THE PHOTO

Post as an image within the Reddit post so people can see it, you can also post any comparison posts at the same time.

If the photo is too large then rescale it and save as a “.PNG” to post on Reddit but upload the original it to a file-sharing site like Google Drive or Dropbox, as this will not rescale the image.

Don’t just upload them to Imgur as most photo sharing websites will recompress the image and destroy fine detail in the picture.

Make sure the title is short but informative. “Possible ghost image from a cell in Alcatraz” is a good title, “GHOST!!?!?!?” is not.

ALSO SUPER IMPORTANT!!!! CONTEXT! CONTEXT! CONTEXT!

After you have posted the images. Make a comment in the post you have just created and put in as much context as possible!!! Too many photos tend to have the photo and some poor description and we have zero ideas of what we should be looking at.

Examples of what to include are…

  • Where the photo was taken. You don’t have to give the address but a location or rough area (if a private address) helps.

  • When the photo was taken, give the date and time if possible, if not known or you can’t remember then give what information you can (I.e In the winter in the early evening).

  • Who took the photo. It should be you or someone you know. Something like ‘Taken by A friend of a girlfriend that is friends with a baker, that my 2nd cousins' hairdresser visits every 3 months is not good’ means it is hard to ask follow up questions.

  • What you were trying to take. (I.e Ghosts, a high school prom or of your granny on her 97th Birthday)

  • If you (or they) were with other people. Also mention strangers.

  • What the weather was like. Was it sunny, cloudy, raining, hot, cold, warm?

  • Description of the location. If in a home, details about the place, I.e, If it is a house, apartment, cabin located 200 miles from civilizational, etc as well as if you are near a road or other places like a pub or bar, major flight path, etc. Else just whatever you can describe the place.

  • What did you feel at the time? I.e cold, scared, fearful, happy, sad, etc.

  • Why do you think it is paranormal? Describe this as best as you can.

  • Anything spooky that happen before or after. Within the same time frame, something that happens 3 months before is probably not related.

So good examples would be…

“This photo was taken at the Alcatraz prison in San Francisco. It is a picture of Cell 13 of cell block D in the cell house. It was taken on Sunday the 13th of May 2018 at around 2pm. It was mostly sunny but there were thick clouds, it was reasonably warm at around 65f and there were strong breezes every so often.

The photo was taken by myself, although I was with my girlfriend at the time. It was quite busy but no one was nearby when I took the photo. I was trying to take a picture of my girlfriend as she stood at the door but I noticed a strange white figure behind her. There was no one in the cell as we had waited for another couple to finish taking their picture before we took ours. I took 3 photos and you can see that the figure is in 2 of the pictures but is not in the third picture.

My girlfriend did say she felt cold in the cell, we had taken a picture in another cell (134 in Cell Block C) and she did not feel anything. The rest of the day was fine though and we enjoyed our trip.”

“A photo of a chair my grandmother used to sit on, in our house in Stirling, Scotland. It was taken on the 1st June 2015, in the wee hours of the morning at 6.30am. I remember it was very cold and it was dark grey and cold outside like a typical morning in Scotland. I had the lights on as although it was morning outside, it was dark in the room.

I took the photo as I felt a presence and I was drawn to the chair. I took 2 photos and you can see a grey mist around the chair. I would have taken more but my phone just drained of power and switched off, not sure why this happens as I am pretty sure I charged it overnight. I don’t smoke, didn’t have any hot drinks. I was in the room all alone as my parents and sister were still in bed and my dog was still on the sofa sleeping peacefully.

Once I charged my phone and saw the pictures, I was filled with deep happiness, I tried to take more photos but the mist never came back. What do you think it is.”

Bad examples are…

Ghosts?!???!!?!?!”

I took this photo whilst in an abandoned building, do you think it is a ghost?”

“Whilst trying to contact my dead aunt to ask where she left her cash, I took lots of photos and all of them had orbs and I heard some moans, screams and creaking coming from my cousins' bedroom but her door was locked!!! Is the house haunted?”

(Edited to add: this photo was taken in the UK!)

I don’t know this person, so I’ve blocked out their face. But my sister’s ex sent this to her around 13 years ago, a friend of his (pictured) had been taking pictures in the bathroom, and noticed this anomaly behind only afterwards.

I’ve been meaning to upload these for years, I lost the pictures but my sister found them again, so here we are.

What do we think? Captured apparition, or trick of the light?

In a historical coastal city in Texas, yes that one, is a cemetery similar but less crowded than one you’d find in New Orleans. It’s not any less creepy though. First picture is what it looked like when I took it. Way later in my camera roll is when I saw what looks really close to a shadow figure? Second picture is zoomed in to show what I’m seeing.

Personal Encounter I belived in ghosts on and off for years now but today that changed

I'm 15 and so is my friend. My friend has been cursed by jealous family members she said... I didn't belive her but today changed that. She told me that her mother's room in her house is cursed by her grandmother, no one can sleep in that room it's like someone is watching you and if you do manage to fall asleep sleep paralysis occurs then she gave me a detailed account on the sleep paralysis demon. The door lock of that room is broken so it doesn't get locked but randomly the door gets locked and unlocked and she's seen someone inside during the evening when she was in the hallway she was home alone. So she got some protection thread or something and that worked she could sleep better and stuff but just 3-4 hours ago she texted the gc multiple photos mostly black but one had a blurry but distinct face that matches the exact description of the sleep paralysis demon. She told us that she saw this in her gallery before leaving for school.. she wasn't on the phone bc she was studying for the exam which was today and plus her phone was on the bed charging and no one was in that room it was 5am she was the only one awake in the house everyone was asleep it's an apartment (ik she isn't lying because I was also awake at that time and she wasn't online plus she has no reason to lie about this) and her protection thread was broken and so was her rosemary. I know she isn't lying because when i visited her house I was infront of that room and it just had an eerie feeling and I heard someone call my name but no one was there.

TLDR: my friend has a spirit in her room I didn't really believe her at first but today she showed me multiple photos that match.

What Do You Think? Partner and I have experienced a few sensory oddities since being in our new house

Hello! I was hoping my first post here would be more interesting but I was curious if anyone had any insight into these small things that have been happening to us. So my boyfriend (26M) and I (24F) moved into a new house late June. It was built in 1924 and seems to have been through a LOT of
rough work and building: used to be a single story home, was then a rental, then a second story was built and was an apartment building, then was converted into a multifamily home and rented out, then was “renovated” and empty for a few years and boom here we are. We bought the house and now own the entire property and are the only ones on the lot. Anyway, it doesn’t necessarily feel like there’s anyone here with us, and I’m here alone every day and don’t hear or feel anything. (I had a few experiences where I would come home after a long day and get the strange feeling that someone had been in the house but I also have OCD so.) But recently we’ve been sitting in the living room and we’ll have little reactions to things? The two most notable that happened very recently were one night we were sitting in our respective seats in the living room and I started tasting blood randomly. I’ve been sick so I assumed maybe it was from coughing and didn’t say anything about it. About two minutes later it happens again and it’s for just a few seconds each time. My boyfriend pipes up and says “why am I tasting blood??” to himself and I obviously sat up
and said “me too what the hell?” We have carbon monoxide detectors in the house that work and we have an air purifier right next to us that hasn’t changed color so we just write it off at the time. Tonight we’re sitting in our same seats, watching a tv show and we both smelled brewing coffee at the same time. No windows are open and even if they were our neighbors are pretty far away. Mind you, we have no coffee in the house because neither of us really drink it. Like the iron taste, it happened again just a moment later and again we both experienced it. It’s weird because it’s one of those things you experience by yourself like a random nostalgic smell or a strange taste or a weird small sound that you acknowledge and then ignore because you’re the only one in the room. But we’re both experiencing it! It may easily be nothing and this may also be the wrong place to bring it up but I was curious if anybody had any insight! It’s a 5 bedroom house with two stories and we’re currently only occupying the bottom floor and two bedrooms while we figure some things out about adding AC upstairs so we’re not really *experiencing* the full house if ya know what I mean, but yeah that’s our little background info and everything!

TL;DR: My boyfriend (26M) and I (24F) moved into a heavily renovated 1924 house in late June. We don't feel like anything is in the house, and I’m home alone most days without experiencing anything unusual. However, while sitting in the living room recently, we both independently started tasting blood/iron at the exact same time, and it happened again shortly afterward. Another night, while sitting in the same spots, we both suddenly smelled freshly brewed coffee despite having no coffee in the house and no obvious source nearby. Both experiences happened simultaneously and more than once. Our CO detectors work and we have an air purifier running, so we’re unsure what could be causing it. Probably nothing, but we’re curious if anyone has experienced something similar or has an explanation!

Briefly saw an old woman lying in bed next to me.

This is an incident that happened years ago. I was temporarily interning at a nursing facility, and one of my coworkers there rented out a room in her home to me, I lived there for 2 months.

I slept in a room that had a twin bed pushed up against a wall. I woke up one night and saw a woman laying next to me, her back was turned to me and she was kind of pressed up, facing the wall. She has long dark hair and looked elderly. I have never jumped out of bed so fast and turned on the lights and looked back, and she was gone. I did NOT feel good about this. Even remembering back I almost feel like I want to cry! It really scared me.

This is where I may be looking too deep into it, but this woman looked very similar to one of the patients at the facility, who was bedbound and had contractures and would actually lay in a similar way in her own bed. She also had a good relationship with my coworker, who had been working with her for years. In fact, during my short stay there, this patient sadly passed away probably a week or two after my night time experience. That’s why I thought it was strange, but maybe just a coincidence.

I have a history of seeing weird stuff when I’m sleeping, and have had sleep paralysis a few times but many years ago. This was different though.

I’ve also lived in places where I definitely had weird “encounters” and hearing/seeing things that are not there, not sure if they are spirits or what, but I never got that vibe when I lived with my coworker.

Fortunately I’m more settled and living in a home where I don’t feel anything off at all! It’s a breath of fresh air. But after reading all your ghost stories, it got me remembering my own experiences.

Would love to hear anyone’s thoughts on this, and of course tell me your own stories as well! Thank you.

Saw a figure walking past my bedroom window

I am pretty confident that a couple of nights ago I saw a male presence walking by my window.

I am spending my holidays in a quite remote area by the beach in Tuscany, Italy. I’ve had this house since I was a kid, 25 years ago+.
Lots of pine trees/woods, a lagoon and the beach within a 5 minute walk from my house.

My house has a garden and my window faces it, it was roughly 1.30 am, it was open because it was warm. I was watching Netflix on my pc and was well awake.

Suddenly I look out and there is this black silhouette walking past my window, away from it, in a very human like walking manner.
Mostly what I happened to recognize distinctly was the shape of a head, or better said, its silhouette being cast from the moonlight. And the rhythm of his walking, the pattern and the energy of it telling me it’s a man, with some weight and rusticity to itself, making me think he would be a 40-50 year old (not so smooth moving), stout guy, around 5ft6 or so.

I stand up with my heart pounding and I see it leaving my field of vision.
I couldn’t hear any steps and the gates leading to the garden/ house were closed.

I had a feeling it was a male presence, again it wanted nothing from me and it wasn’t menacing but I was scared shitless. My dog who was lying in bed with me didn’t flinch, but he was dead asleep and he’s a senior.

Trembling I set up a camera with night vision to see if it was some human passing by but it didn’t pick up on any object moving for the rest of the night (some alerts but nothing showed up on screen).

I initially dismissed it thinking I must have been imagining things, but then I spoke to a friend last night and he confirmed there is a lot of folklore regarding presences in this part of the region in the countryside, associated with farming and animals mostly. I can’t get it out of my head now and I believe was in denial, I definitely saw something.

My friend reassured me it’s probably not malignant if it didn’t interact or stare but I am still worried and would like to communicate with the presence that I am not a threat and such. I mean after all it must have seen me grow up, play with my cousins and dogs, spending time with my love interests etc etc….

Overall I’m not sure what to make of this but I can’t stop thinking I’m not alone on my property.
I wanted to spend my winter here after tourist season is over but I am now a little nervous

Personal Encounter I angered a ghost in Japan and it followed me home…

Thumbnail

I went to the Japanese countryside to teach English for four days.

I came home believing in ghosts.

What started as a simple summer camp in the mountains of Kumamoto took a disturbing turn when strange things began happening. One of the children become possessed, a man with experience dealing with spirits became affected himself, and something followed me after I left Japan.

After returning to Taiwan, I began seeing a seven foot tall figure everywhere I went, always appearing in the corner of my vision.

This is a true story about something that happened to me in Japan and continued after I returned home to Taiwan.

I’m sharing the full story so you can hear what happened and decide for yourself whether there was something supernatural involved, or whether there’s another explanation.

You folks would understand and potentially give me answers to my experiences.

Hello all,

Been following for a while but never posted, however something has just happened so wanted to get your advice/expertise.

A bit of a back story, I see things that aren’t there, nothing scary just animals and people. I also have a couple benign growths on my brain so maybe that plays a part.

Anyway I moved in to my house about 8 years ago. Ever since I’ve seen an older man and a black cat occasionally in the house but again I’m not concerned it’s just an oddity. My cats do the classic staring into the corner of the room at nothing so I suspect they see things that I don’t always see. I’ve had occasions where I’ve sat on my bed, felt the bed depress like a cat has jumped on, turn around to pet said cat and no cat to be found (all were downstairs with my partner)

The reason I’m posting now is because it’s usually just me that gets the odd things happening around the house but now it’s just happened to my partner. A few months back I could smell an overwhelming smell of cigarettes sweep over me as I was eating so I said out loud “can you please move, I’m trying to eat” smell started disappearing, ate my sandwich and it slowly returned. Tonight my partner called upstairs (I’m in bed) that she can smell a strong smell of cigarettes in the same spot. I said this might sound bizarre but can you just ask out loud for them to move. So she did and it’s gone now. She had no idea what I was talking about, but she’s very open to the possibility of things that we cannot see and energy.

Sorry for my ramble, I just know if I don’t get it down now I will forget about it.

Thank you.

I saw a hand caress my face in the mirror

I was about 9 or 10 years old and I remember this was at a difficult time where I was not doing so good mentally and I was also pretty tired, I was brushing my teeth in front of the sink and when I finished brushing my teeth I looked up in the mirror and I saw a white detached hand kind of caress my face and turn it to the right a little bit and I think I only saw the hand in the mirror but I did kind of involuntarily turn my head to the right and the hand fully dissepeared but it was genuienly so vivid, I don't really believe in ghosts so I am aware this was probably my brain playing a trick on me but like I said it was extremely vivid and I didn't ever tell anyone about it.

Is this paranormal? First time experience, please help us make sense of this.

Hey yall. Like the title mentions, neither myself or my family has any experience with anything paranormal and had the situation below play out this morning (9/1/26).

My father lives in North Carolina and had an alert on his garage cameras this morning for a “person detected” a little after 7am. He picks up his phone and sees the first image, where there appears to be a person standing in the grass between his driveway and the neighbors house. He heads outside to go check it out - nothing there. Then he picks up his phone to check again while outside and still sees the “person”. Not knowing what to make of it he heads inside and sends me the images. I ask him to send me one of the area in daylight and that is what the second image is.

We are very, very far from experts here and know next to nothing about what this could be or how it could be explained. Hopefully someone more familiar with cameras and the paranormal can debunk this one, but we would really appreciate any insight here. Thank yall very much for taking a look at this!

The back story is woman was camping and filming her fire in slow motion to catch the flames because she had put stuff in the fire to change color. Allegedly, she only saw the figure in the background after the fact. It appears like someone else is in the back or something and that’s when the figure leaves. I’ve adjusted brightness on a different clip but this is the original. The video went on a few seconds more but nothing else happens.

What Do You Think? Played ouija board with my friend are we screwed?

Me and my friend just played the ouija board in a house we’re pet sitting for because we didn’t believe in it. I trust my friend fully i know she did not move the planchette we were both crying and terrified. We only asked one question who are you and were given the initials RVK. I immediately had us say goodbye and we did it the right way. Will we automatically get haunted even if we weren’t talking to a bad spirit/entity? Or is it possible for us to not have any consequences?

Fairly sure that we have a mischievous albeit harmless ghost in our house

Moved into our house about a year ago. It's me, my wife, and our baby (currently 9 months). Nothing strange happened until about a month and a half ago.

I'm sitting in the living room, wife is with the baby in our bedroom across the house. Suddenly I hear a water sound. I figure it's the dishwasher running or something, but after about 30 seconds I'm still hearing it. Get up to check, and the kitchen sink is running. Like, fully running, handle is turned, water coming out. I think, surely someone just left it running right? I walk into the bedroom, "did you leave the sink running or something?" No, she'd been in there for like 20 minutes with baby. Huh. Okay.

Then about two weeks ago, it's 3am, I wake up and have to pee so I go into the main bathroom rather than the master so as to not wake anybody up. While I'm in there, I hear CLEAR AS CRYSTAL the HBO Presentation movie sound. The 3 final notes. Plays loud, like the TV in the living room is just on. I run out into the living room, absolutely nothing. I walk back into the bedroom, maybe it was my wife's phone or something? Nope, everybody's dead asleep. Walk back out to the living room. Just... nothing. Told my wife about it the next morning, she wonders if maybe it was her laptop in the next room doing the Mac startup sound? Maybe, but I know what I heard. To be fair, the TV has a few times made sound after being turned out, but that's like, right after turning it off, and it's only for a few seconds. This was easily 6 hours after the tv had been turned off. Didn't help that we had been having a horror movie marathon that whole week and had watched "Undertone" that night. I didn't get back to sleep.

Finally, last night, as we're going to bed, things are winding down, wife is giving the baby a bottle in the bedside bassinet, it's quiet when suddenly, water sound from the master bathroom. I strain my ears to hear it, get up... sink is running. Handle turned, fully running. From the bathroom where the door was closed.

It doesn't help that our son has gotten into this fun little habit of just staring at parts of the room or in closets where no one is for lengths of time, as if there's something or someone there. I really genuinely want there to be a rational explanation for these occurrences. That would be awesome. Please someone put my mind at ease.

Please share a time a ghost threw something at you

I would love to hear some stories specifically about an object being in the air or something where it was a flat out “that was a ghost” moment. I feel like I do hear things about items getting knocked over, or a door slamming but I’m curious if anyone has had an angry ghost or something throw a object directly at you 😂😂😂

If you wanna hear my story, one time I was on FaceTime with my friend and a pencil flew straight at my head, at my house in a hallway where there was nothing. (So no shelves or anything for the pencil to fly off of or roll off of) it also was pointed straight at me so that’s just how I knew like “oh craaaap this a ghost!!” My friend also immediately said it was a ghost cause she was looking at me on the FaceTime and saw the pencil coming at me from the side.

Anyway thanks for reading if you did and let me know any stories you might have and that you don’t mind me sharing with others online!!! :)

Captured Apparition My freezer door opens by itself and a shadow manifestation appears 12 seconds later.

Hey all! Since it’s almost spooky season, I figured I’d share something that happened a couple days ago. My freezer door opened on its own… followed by what looks like a little black shadow popping its head out about 12 seconds into the camera footage before dissolving into smoke. It almost looks like a cat. Then an orb appears near the camera in the uncropped video around the 22 second mark.

Given that there’s a bookshelf full of my old pets’ ashes right next to it, I suppose I shouldn’t be too surprised.

I know I was pissed when I got home because I initially thought one of my cats had somehow opened the freezer and left it that way for eight hours. Thankfully, after checking the footage, it was only open for about thirty minutes.

But still. If you want to haunt me, fine. I don’t care if you haunt the house, but leave my wallet and utilities out of it!

Even my cats were confused on what was happening, lol

Captured Apparition The apartment next door. Can you see him?

I really need to update my phone so it can zoom better still working on an iphone 12 😭 you can see this kid? So much clearer in person. He has been staring at me out the neighbors window for a good 30 minutes.
