Mod Announcement And the winner of the banner contest is...

u/beginning-sugar479!!!!

The biggest of all congratulations to them!

Also to u/Loud-Fisherman-5254 for participating!

And to everyone else who voted!

It was a very close call. Let me say it here how much we appreciate our participants for well, participating! Both of you had such cool designs and looking at the votes, I think the community will be happy with either banner.

Truly, a vote either way could have swung it. But we do indeed have a winner. It's a very nice banner and fits quite nicely with the vibes.

Again, massive thank you to everyone! Maybe we can do this again in 6 months? A year? Or the next time we get complaints. Either way we'll see.

- XOXO

Mod Announcement Effective Immediately: Discussions about the cast are now banned (again...)

Hi All,

Some of you won't be surprised by this. Some (or most...) will go "it's about time" but here it is. We recognise we should have done this sooner and that is our mistake. But as they say, the best time to start something is yesterday. The second best time is today.

So effective immediately:

All discussions about the cast is banned on this subreddit unless it relates to their role on Gossip Girl. New rule (Rule 10) has been created to report posts about the cast if they are posted.

What does that mean? It means that cast talk will no longer be permitted unless it's to do with their role on Gossip Girl. So for example:

"I loved how Blake played Serena here"

"As much as I love Chace, I really wasn't a fan of his line delivery here"

"Penn is great and his acting really shines through here!"

are all fine. Reminder these are just examples.

General discussions of the cast such as what their doing now, Instagram posts, red carpet appearances are now all banned.

Please do not report posts created before this point. We're not going to remove them as we're not going to punish people for this as we mods did not enforce this as strictly as we should have.

Now for some questions you may have:

"Can't you guys just do like a weekly thread or dedicate a day to talking about the cast?"

We could. And who knows? Maybe that is what we'll transition to. But for now we need to just ban it so that we can restore some civility here.

"It's really just Blake/Ed posts that attract the worst so just like, ban talk about them?"

That is true. But we have to be honest with ourselves: the negativity and fighting (including but not limited to multiple members, including the mods themselves, being harassed both in and out of this subreddit) is breaking out on almost every post. For example: comparisons with other cast members when they aren't warranted.

"Can we just ban negative posts and enforce a positive content only rule?"

We can foresee this being super hard to maintain. It's either going to turn into something people take advantage of such as wanting discussions of Ed's allegations to be banned (we're already at this stage believe us....) or a toxic/sarcastic positivity thing where people are being negative under a veneer of fake positivity.

And then we're back where we started: here.

"Speaking of, what about sexual assault allegations against Ed?"

There is a pinned post on this subreddit with links. Any discussions about it now will just result in us redirecting you guys to the thread instead.

"What you guys clearly need is more mods tbh"

We agree completely. We want this subreddit sorted first before we introduce people to moderating it. Wouldn't be fair to expect new people to sort this out. It's on us.

I'm sure some of you will have lots more questions. Please redirect them to modmail. This thread is being locked as it's an informative post and quite honestly, to prevent more infighting amongst yourselves based on whether or not you want this.

Thanks for reading this if you made it this far.

- The mods

OG Series Chuck is a one-note character

Post image
24 Upvotes

Now I’m going to start off by saying that I’m very much aware gossip girl isn’t some deep philosophical show, I’m very much aware of that.

I’ll also be fair and say that as much as I dislike Chuck, I wouldn’t say he’s boring. He certainly has his moments even if I don’t particularly care for them. With that said Chuck is an empty character.

His “motivations” are extremely surface level. Sure, he has his very contrived daddy issues and the dead mom but I never bought it because the writers added that to story so the audience would feel bad for Chuck. It’s not organic therefore it comes off extremely manipulative.

Outside is very melodramatic family dynamics, he has no ambitions, hobby’s, or interests. Even Nate has his own aspirations as boring as he is. With Blair we know her favorite books and movies. It’s the small details that really help characters feel more fleshed and therefore the audience can connect with them. Chuck lacks his own identity outside of Blair.

Hopefully I was able to articulate my thoughts well. I know not everyone will agree and that’s fine lol.

OG Series i feel like serena was always trapped in a “damned if she does, damned if she doesn’t” scenario with blair

listen i know a majority of this fanbase doesn’t like because of her victim mentality, lack of accountability, along with her sleeping with nate and dan, i get all of that. as a serena stan, all of that frustrates me as well.

however outside of that, i feel like serena could NEVER win with blair no matter what she did. she was trapped in a “damned if she does, damned if she doesn’t” dynamic with her.

blair constantly demanded serena to step down from everything so she could shine. if serena unintentionally attracted attention, blair would take it as an attack and accuse her of hogging the spotlight.

if serena held back or stepped back to let blair shine, blair would still spiral out of paranoia and accuse serena of being condescending or patronizing.

if serena takes a major opportunity that she either earned or was handed to her, blair would label her as entitled or lazy.

if she rejected it, blair would treat it as a slap in the face.

if serena stayed passive, blair viewed her as a passive aggressive threat. if serena stood up for herself, blair used it as proof that serena was some manipulative bully.

it genuinely didn’t matter whether or not serena was in the wrong because blair would view her as a villain regardless 😭

OG Series Just Finished watching Gossip Girl (for the first time!!)

First-time Gossip Girl watcher: my character opinions are probably going to get me attacked

I just finished Gossip Girl for the first time and I NEED to get these opinions out because some of these characters had me fighting for my life 😭

Vanessa : I HATED HER.

I genuinely could not stand her. And not even in a “she’s annoying but I eventually warmed up to her” way. Nope. I disliked her from the FIRST episode she appeared in and somehow she kept finding new ways to annoy me. I know people have complicated opinions about everyone on this show, but Vanessa was just… absolutely not for me.

Blair : LOVED HER.

And yes, I know she did some objectively terrible things. I am aware. But I was seated for every single Blair scene. She was dramatic, ambitious, petty, hilarious, occasionally unhinged, but also incredibly layered. I just enjoyed watching her. 🤷‍♀️

Serena : HATED HER.

And I feel like the reasons are pretty obvious if you've watched the whole show. 😭 I kept trying to understand her and then she would do something that immediately reminded me why I couldn't stand her. There were moments where I felt bad for her, but overall? Girl, PLEASE.

Nate : LOVED HIM.

Honestly, my unproblematic king. 😂 Compared to everyone else, Nate was just out here trying to survive the absolute chaos surrounding him. Was he perfect? Obviously not. But after watching everyone else constantly scheme, lie, betray each other and make the worst possible decision, Nate was a breath of fresh air.

Chuck ..MIXED FEELINGS.

This man had me going through every possible emotion. I could understand why people loved him, and there were moments where I absolutely loved him too. But then he'd do something and I'd be like… yeah, never mind. 😭 His character development was interesting, but I definitely couldn't just overlook everything because he occasionally did something nice.

Jenny: I LOVED JENNY.

And I will die on this hill.

She was literally a teenager. A TEENAGER. Watching the way everyone treated her sometimes made me so frustrated because she clearly needed guidance, stability and someone actually willing to parent her instead of just reacting to whatever she did after the fact.

Which brings me to…

Rufus .... I HATED HIM AS A PARENT.

I actually think Jenny is one of the characters who made me angriest because I kept thinking, someone please just help this girl??? She was a teenager thrown into an insane environment with basically unlimited access to adult drama, and instead of consistently guiding her, Rufus would often just get angry at the consequences.

Like sir, you are the parent. 😭

And the ending.... i did NOT like it!!!

Overall, this show was absolutely amazing and I loved/hated almost everyone at some point. But I'm genuinely curious what everyone else's first-watch opinions were.

Especially Jenny. I feel like people either defend her or absolutely cannot stand her.

XOXO 💋

OG Series I don't think Rufus was wrong for wanting "revenge" on cece

Just rewatched s1ep10 and honestly Rufus's revenge against Cece wasn't just "petty revenge" imo, what she said to Dan, what she did to Rufus with Lily was really awful. If it was just about Rufus and what happened in the past it would feel more like petty revenge but she was literally doing the same thing with Serena and Dan, he had every right to want to stuck Dan in her face and Dan should've gone with Serena. I'm sure he would've let Jenny go too if she had asked him, the issue was she didn't ask, she just went without telling anyone

OG Series Every horrible thing Vanessa did to make her the worst character on Gossip Girl

- She helped Jenny get into the masked ball and even doubled back to make sure she had her keys

- She got Dan published in the New Yorker

- She gave Dan sex advice even when it was breaking her heart

- She went out of her way to become friends with Serena even though it was breaking her heart

- She gave Blair the tape she recorded of Chuck blackmailing her, asking for nothing in return

- She apologized to Nate for unfairly judging him after reading his SAT essay

- She helped Serena create the perfect Christmas present for Dan just because she wanted him to be happy

- She stifled her feelings for Dan in order to be a good friend to Dan and Serena FOR THE ENTIRE RELATIONSHIP, unlike other people in the cast who scheme to break people up and cheat, and even after they broke up, she did not pursue Dan first

- She helped Serena impress her director crush during the school play, almost at the expense of her own relationship

- She gave Chuck a chance to buy a bar she cared about and saw that underneath it all, he was a misunderstood guy with redeeming qualities and even defended him to Blair - before being humiliated by the both of them

- [JUST ADDED] She advocated on Jenny’s behalf, showing Rufus how important Jenny’s work at Eleanor’s atelier was and helped arrange homeschooling for her which ultimately set Jenny on the path to achieving her dreams and establishing a (fleeting) moment of peace between Jenny and Rufus

- Even though no one found out that she stole Nate’s letter to Jenny, she took it upon herself to tell him and took her public humiliation with grace without pursuing revenge on anyone

- She helped Nate confront his father so he could turn himself in and helped mend his friendship with Chuck in the process

- She encouraged Nate to reach out to his family and give them a chance to make it up to him

- She forgave Nate and went to Europe with him after he unceremoniously dumped her for Blair

- Because Vanessa submitted Dan’s writing to the New Yorker, he gained opportunities for internships and started NYU off with a stellar reputation

- [JUST ADDED] She gave Georgina a clean slate when she got to NYU and encouraged Dan to forgive her too

- She forgave Scott for lying to her about his identity and using her to get close to Dan and his family

- She allowed herself to be manipulated by Georgina in order to protect Scott’s identity

- She warned Nate about the Tripp scandal, giving him a chance to figure things out before submitting it to the press and then forgave him after he tricked her into giving the footage to the wrong reporter

- She didn’t call Blair racist and classist for her comments about her “good breeding” compared to Vanessa’s (but maybe she should’ve because the fandom doesn’t see it)

- [JUST ADDED] She lent Blair, someone who has never had a kind word to say to her and has talked badly about her genetics multiple times (i.e. supporting Serena heading off any Humphrey-Abrams offspring) her clothes when Blair wanted a night out away from people who were afraid to date her after Chuck so she could blend in with the Bushwick crowd.

- She dropped everything to help Dan raise Milo without being asked

- She forgave Dan for:
—Falsely telling Willa that her submission to Tisch was plagiarized
—Cheating on her while she was in Haiti
—Running to Serena when she was trying to help him deal with his depression over Milo - during which time he told Serena he’s not over her

- When she heard that an email was sent from Serena’s phone offering sex for grades, she decided it was better to tell her that she stole her phone than to allow her to get expelled for something she knew Serena didn’t do, saying it was “the right thing to do” (before Juliet intervened and blamed it all on her)

- She helped Nate find out the truth about Juliet by snooping in her house while he kept her distracted

- She got Dan’s book published (that is not an easy thing to do)

Did she also do bad things? Yes, and every single one had to do with being betrayed, hurt, or lied to by Nate or Dan, both guys who treated her like trash and left her for girls who think nothing of her. Tell me if your fave character has a list this long of good things that they did for every single main character, even people they’re not friends with, people who treat her like she’s disposable, just for her to be painted as the worst character and the biggest hypocrite when she is far from it.

im on season 2 ep 15 of gossip girl for the first time and i honestly keep wonderings why dan is with serena when her best friend / friend group bullies his younger sister? i just keep thinking about how he or his dad is okay with this and letting it slide all the time.

esp Serena too. u would think she would actually get mad at Blair for being so mean to her boyfriends sister most of the time

S5 E1. I can't believe I didn't pay as close attention to Serena/Nate's conversation as I thought! 🙈

Not only did Chuck clearly not learn anything from Blair/Hotel scandal.

But I'm honestly surprised that a real person was mentioned in this scene.

Thoughts?

OG Series Who would be most likely to cheat after gg ended

When gossip girl ended and Chuck and Blair had a kid who would be most likely to cheat out of Chuck and Blair
And do you ever think Dan would cheat on Serena with Blair or not
