Question Fearlessness

Upvotes

Maybe I am wrong. It has been a long time since I have read the comics. I was a huge GL fan. Kyle was my Lantern growing up. I had a few Hal and Guy comics but it was mainly Kyle's run as GL when I was coming up.

My question is I thought it was the ability to overcome fear not just be fearless.

Personally Red Lanterns are my fav.

Discussion Would it be so terrible if we broke the status quo?

Upvotes

I would love to see the separate Corps actually make moves to more effectively work together without having to drum up some lame reason for why everything has to go back to the way its been for decades now.

None of the Corps outside of like, the Black Lanterns, at their heart, have a purely evil MO.

Namely the Red and Yellow Lanterns. Red Lanterns seek out violent street-justice towards heinous criminals, the whole reason the Sinestro Corps was formed was to expose and fill in the cracks that the Green Lanterns couldn't or wouldn't fill. If people won't listen to reason, using fear IS a genuine alternative if Sinestro would keep his Lanterns in line.

I'm not a fan of the argument that there NEEDS to be beef with all the Corps to tell a story. At this point I think reading about them addressing and overcoming their differences to more effectively police the universe could make for some inherently interesting stories.

I would *love* if they did a series about a "proof of concept" squad of Green, Yellow, Blue and Red and.....Idk make more of an effort to take some of the sting out of Larfleeze's suffering (he's experienced non-stop torment for billions of years and *also* is not inherently evil just corrupted and insane). Like rotate some blue and green Lantern duos around him so he can catch *some* respite.

Would you like to read about a story where the Corps for the first time in their written history just...made good decisions?

Spoilers for movies and TV shows John’s mom doesn’t even make sense

Upvotes

Something I find funny about John’s mom. There’s a line in ep 3 of Lanterns where John’s mom (Bernie) says “even in space you don’t consider us” but here’s the outright laughable thing about that and what makes you realize how dumb the writing is In this episode in particular.

They did.

If you recall before Hal was even chosen the ring literally considered John’s father. He didn’t get it ofc because he proved unworthy but the point is he was considered making Bernie’s statement 100% false.

Spoilers for movies and TV shows About John Stewart's Raising Spoiler

I've seen a couple of creators remark how Lanterns has brought in a "new concept" to the mythos of John having a genetic background to make him a good Green Lantern. Trying to say that there might be more cosmic lore building to other races in the universe, or that Earth was seeded with individuals with strong wills or a specific DNA marker. I personally don't think this is as deep as they want to make it out to be, and that it's a bullshit line said by Lianna since this is they seemingly have never had something like this happen before. The concept of scaring the crap out of potential candidates, seemingly lower life forms such as humans is a new thing to the Guardians. I think she fed that line to John's mother since she had a newborn that hadn't yet been shaped by it's experiences in life, and by telling her that, it was the best way to try an experiment to a potentially perfect, fearless Green Lantern in the future that wouldn't disobey orders.

Discussion Looking for comic book recommendations

Hey there everyone!

Sorry for a lengthy post! I wanted to reach out to see what some of the better recommendations for Green Lanterns stories this community might have. Most of the stories are centred around Hal, but I feel as though Hal was maybe tainted somewhat as a character for me based on how I was introduced to the Green Lantern mythos - I'll get back to this. I’m either looking for the best Green Lantern comic runs that aren’t centred around Hal, and/or recommendations where I get to see a more heroic version of Hal. I love sci-fi, especially with a space setting, I still stop by my local comic shop weekly to pick-up my favourite titles, so I feel as though Green Lantern should be in my wheelhouse. I’m currently reading Green Lantern vol. 7 and Absolute Green Lantern. Vol. 7 is pretty good, though I feel as though I might be missing some context, and I’m really enjoying Absolute Green Lantern. I should add that I also read all of Green Lantern: New Guardians, which I enjoyed, minus what felt like a very forced romance arc between Kyle and Carol.

Ok, now for how was I introduced to Green Lantern...

My dad was a big comics fan, and had a considerable collection (mostly marvel) which was my first foray into comic books. Green Arrow was one of his favourite heroes – makes sense considering Green Arrow’s penchant for social justice and my Dad was a social worker. As a result, my first introduction to Green Lantern was as a child and in the Green Lantern/Green Arrow series. I haven’t read it in a bit, but I do recall some moments where I didn’t think Hal was very heroic, and sometimes was even kind of a dick. I then became confused when not long after, I was watching Superman: TAS when despite having an origin similar to Hal Jordan, the Green Lantern’s name was Kyle.

Shortly thereafter, a good friend of mine, and self-described Green Lantern superfan explained that they basically merged Hal and Kyle in Superman: TAS. He suggested I read the “Emerald Twilight” storyline. My friend sold this as the coolest Green Lantern storyline he had ever read. This led to me lending him my “Maximum Carnage” collection for his “Emerald Twilight” collection. I've since come to learn that "Emerald Twilight" is considered a controversial story to say the least. After reading Green Lantern/Green Arrow, Emerald Twilight, and the general confusion I had as a kid around Green Lantern from Superman TAS, and then Justice League/Justice League Unlimited, I came away with the conclusion that Hal understandably broke due to disillusionment with the guardians, coupled with an insane amount of grief from the destruction of Coast City, hence Parallax. I also thought Kyle Rayner being an artist was a smart choice to be a Lantern. I figured in theory he could come up with some really unique and imaginative constructs – as a kid, I also really liked his costume.

I briefly had interest in Hal after watching Green Lantern First Flight (2009), but then the Green Lantern (2011) movie came out and that really cratered my interest in the character again. With Lanterns (2026) coming out, the thought came back into my head that I really should be more into Green Lantern. So far, I’m really enjoying Lanterns, but was surprised to see so many people frustrated with Hal’s portrayal. Whereas for me, I thought it was quite good based off how I was introduced to Hal Jordan, combined with the fact he doesn’t want to be replaced – Who would be?!

So please, give me some of your best recommendations for non Hal Jordan centred Green Lantern arcs. Though I would also welcome some where I get to see a more heroic side of Hal. Thanks!

Spoilers for movies and TV shows Okay so in the new series, John is chosen as the replacement of Hal Jordan. Not like a sector replacement in the animated, basically Hal's fired. Is this a thing in the comics or its the show's invention ? Why can't just they give John another ring ?

Question What are some hal jordan graphic novels?

I just finished reading hard traveling heroes I thought it was a great book I want some more hal jordan books and I know everyone’s telling me to read Geoff Jones Green Lantern but at this moment I don’t want to commit to a series that is too long I want something smaller miniseries or limited series that can be enjoyed on its own. The stuff I already read like I mentioned earlier is hard traveling heroes then a while ago when I was reading a lot of 90s Kyle Rayner I read Emerald twilight.

With the popularity of the new series, I felt it was time to revisit an idea I had a while back. I have a ring collection from when I was a kid, but the 2011 rings no longer fit my adult hands. Say what you will about that movie but I always adored its aesthetic choices especially when it came to the ring.

With a dremel, a small blade, a heat gun, sand paper, and a LOT of patience so as not to dig too deep, I finally got it to a wearable size! I have an unaltered one for comparison! I love how the darker plastic makes it blend in with my outfits and I legit might wear this one around town like I did when I was a kid!

Art My take on the suits bear with me.

Post image
9 Upvotes

First I want to say that I very much like the Lanterns take on the suits, Second I made this just as I woke up so there's basically no effort I know how to draw trust me😭

SHARED DETAILS;

→ I think the chest plate in lanterns is a nice take, so I kept that in just with a slightly different shape. This pattern will carry itself throughout the suit. The first two panels are armored, the last one is thick leather to provide protection but also allow the wearer to move properly.

→ The shoulders still keep the shoulder pads are thickened leather with the GL insignia.

→The elbows use a thinner fabric to maintain mobility.

→ The thighs have the thickened leather and shinguards with a faint emerald shine to them. The inguinal region (thanks Google) has thin fabric for mobility.

→ I don't remember if it was the comics or not but I remember seeing the GLs using military style boots and that was a banger look.

SPECIES SPECIFIC;

→ Multi armed species will retain the shoulder pads on their main/highest set of shoulders, The extra arms receive padding on their biceps closest to the shoulder joints.

→ The chest guard is altered to fit their different shest structure.

→ Those with tails will have armor at the base of the tail.

→ Those with digitigrade legs will have a larger fabric section at the bottom of their legs to give the required mobility. The armor will instead sit on their thighs instead of their shins.

→ Snake/Worm like species will have a small helm, The chest armor will continue further down the body to where they have contact with the ground, the part of their body that is in contact with the ground can either have no covering or fabric, depends on what the individual requires (if they need to use their skin to move, etc)

→ Said species will have armor covering their back starting at where ground contact is made. Though one can request more armor be added further up the body.

→ Oh hey look my OC! If a species has wings or any other protrusions then the relevant section of the suit will be altered appropriately just like how R'amey has a large back cutout for her wings.

______________________

I wanted the suit to have that skin tight look but also be reasonable in the sense that the GLs are a police force so I kept a lot of the armored elements from the Lanterns suit but replaced the hard light suit sections with leather and fabrics; The joints have fabrics which would make them vulnerable but I made those areas smaller and the leather sections larger to make up for the lost of protection as joints are prime targets especially in the thigh area.

The Lanterns suit is bulky cause it's armor and I do like it but I can also see why people aren't fond of it and how it being mostly thick can pose issues with other species as you would have to modify it in multiple different ways, I think having vital sections be armored and the joins just covered will allow other species to wear the armor but also have it look cohesive.

I gave the chest armor a sort of stacked look because while humans don't really move their upper body that much and you must sometimes sacrifice mobility for protection, I feel like this would once again be a cohesion issue for other races that do have a lot more mobility in the chest so I think having a sectioned chest plate would help more than a single piece and then just continuously modifying it to fit other species and having it look completely different for each individual.

I think a good detail to have that I'm absolutely not drawing is to have a specific type of stitching and forging; Pretty much all couture and high fashion brands have a specific type of stitching and it's one way to identify knockoffs from the authentic clothes or bags. If you have so many variants of a uniform it'll just be easy for people to dress up as one, but if you have variants with a very iconic type of crafting then it will be easier to identify.

• "Why doesn't tails have full armor"

→ While tails are a part of the spine, in most animals they can lose a good chunk of their tail without future issues besides the loss of a balance aid, the higher up the tail you get the closer to the main spine section you get and the more risk there is.

•"What about the Noc'saigans, Penelops, and Shorm!"

→ Noc'saigans have armor around their...heads? Species like Penelops and Shorm have layered armor on their main/most forefront tentacles and padding on their lesser tentacles. For folks like Penelops I consider giving them some sort of visor or really strong contact lens but I feel like that would be too uncomfortable for them.

_____________________

Now that I'm up I'm considering giving the higher ups like Salaak and Kilowog armor specific to their status, and the medic GLs their own as well. I'm very much a "it has to match" type of person but I also like the idea that GLs sometimes have unique fits (Guy, Jo, Simon, etc) so I think that while this is a uniform and should be uniform in nature, I think some personal flair should be given grace.

Edit: Not depicted is a zipper so GLs can go to the bathroom ✌️

Question Can someone make a basic reading order for me?

I get this is proabably a tired thing to ask for but i have yet to see one asking for specifically a basic one, so can someone just help me get a really basic reading order (I'm using dc infinite so no compendiums or omnibuses since, for some reason, it doesn't have them.)

I'm looking for just green lantern stuff from rebirth too the current run.

I really don't want any "Here read this random book about the thragnar war which is slow asf and boring as shit* because kyles in it for like 5 seconds but something major happans to him and you can't possible just infer what is happening to him when you see him next."

And as an extra id also like whatever leads to guy becoming a red lantern and leading the red lanterns.

Thanks!

Question [Question] How were John and Guy originally introduced as Green Lanterns?

I came into my love for Green Lantern during Kyle's introduction, and I kinda gleaned a little bit of the history from future runs, but things have changed so much, now, I'm not even sure what parts of my memory are new stuff what parts are original, and what stuff I just assumed or made up.

Now, watching the Lanterns show, my wife keeps asking me questions about John and Guy in the comics and I've realized, I don't actually know!

How were they originally introduced, and what is their current story as to how they're Lanterns?

Fan Art I made my headphones 'mine'

I got these headphones and wanted to change the cushions to orange because why not. I did it but it felt a bit out of place. So, I wanted to design an orange cover to go with them. Then it came to me that the only meaningful thing I could make in orange is, well, the Orange Lantern logo. So They are MINE now lol.

It is a 3D print. I didn't design the blank version myself because I don't know how to do that but I added the logo, so there wasn't much work other than the color match. But I'll try to model one that is a bit curvier, like the original, for a better fit. This is my version 1 and I love it, wanted to share!

Discussion When did Guy get his ring?

Post image
0 Upvotes

After the truly horrifying revelations and mentality displayed in the last episode of Lanterns I really want to know when Guy was inducted into the Corps. It has to be some time after 2016, there’s no way John’s parents heads wouldn’t explode seeing that haircut flying around after they spent 30 years emotionally abusing their children if he got it first.

Spoilers for movies and TV shows question from the newest ep

they said John’s brothers can’t be a lantern because they experienced fear . doesn’t this just go against the whole idea of being a lantern ?

the idea was to overcome fear not wether or not you’ve ever been afraid? also shooting apples off his head to make him invulnerable to fear?

would a ring choose someone who’s “ incapable “ of fear instead of someone who can overcome it?

Hal and Aaron Burr have dinner

Writer: Dennis O'Neil

Pencils: Dick Dillin

Inks: Tex Blaisdell

Cover: Nick Cardy & Tatjana Wood

"The Man Of Destiny" - Hal is with historical figure Aaron Burr aboard a spaceship with one question: How did this happen? Burr explains that on the fateful night, when he had a duel with Alexander Hamilton, a light appeared above them that pulled Burr away. He awoke surrounded by aliens who asked for his help to save their planet. They are a technologically rich species but still plagued by poverty and conflict. Burr agrees to help but he asks what is to happen with his duel. The aliens create a duplicate of Burr, and since time dilation is in effect, they are able to send the duplicate back to the exact moment Burr was taken. It's thanks to that same time dilation that Burr has remained alive for so long. He only came near earth to see some of the items from his youth as he is feeling homesick. After the explanation, a drone servant called Ignatz attacks Burr, reeling itself to be a spy for the alien's enemies. Hal jumps in, but his ring doesn't affect Ignatz. He then creates an opening in the ship, so Ignatz is left floating though space. With the danger gone, Hal brings Burr to Earth for a moment so he can feel it again. Burr then returns to his ship to continue his work.

Conclusion: What an interesting tale. Involving history into the stories like this is a favourite style of mine. I wonder if we ever see Burr or the aliens again? Will he ever be free? Questions are left open but good ones that can be left to your imagination.

Source of the panels is Green Lantern New 52 #20 tho admittedly I don't know the source of the meme I just saw it while browsing if anyone knows please share

Johns Green Lantern blew me away when I read it for the first time years ago and despite reading many many comics since none has reached its place in my heart (tho some like Hickman F4 and Busiek Avengers came close) this particular moment (and whole issue) specifically remains unmatched what other run has such a conclusive perfect ending?

Discussion Why did the Guardians make their weapons emotion and willpower dependent?

So, if I understand this correctly, Green Lanterns are a galactic peacekeeping force who use 3D hardlight generators that can, depending on the level of concentration and willpower, create a wide variety of constructs, allow the user to fly, bend space time, amongst other effects.

My question is this: why would you make a weapon powered by willpower and concentration?

If I walked into NYPD headquarters tomorrow and announced that their new handguns are connected to neural implants that measure their willingness to shoot, level of concentration and that the trigger bar will literally be locked up if certain thresholds aren’t met, I would be laughed out of the building.

Making them dependent on willpower alone is dangerous. It risks that strongwilled but otherwise unsuitable candidates are found.

Hal was corrupted and turned into Parallax. Guy joined the Red Lanterns.

Why didn’t Ganthet give the Corps an energy device that just works with simple mental commands? Like Marvels Nova Corps?

Of course, concentration would still dictate the power output but you wouldn’t need to hyper focus on one mental characteristic all the time.
