In my quest to find more old photo of Hoboken I came across this sweet Hoboken etching from 1860.

Is it me, or do cars speed up as you walk in the crosswalks? Sometimes people don’t stop at all. Super scary! Despite additional stop signs, it still happens just as much.

This is a picture from the 1880s of the West side of Garden Street between 12th and 13th streets being built. The picture is in the Hoboken Historical Museum archives and is from a architectural magazine that was published at the time they were being built.

It's interesting that the entire block was built at one time, and the exterior design of the houses were built as matching pairs down the entire block, which still exists today.

I recently moved to 1st & Monroe, and this evening I took the 126 bus (Willow Ave) from the city. Everyone got off at 2nd Street, but according to Google Maps, the 126 route has TWO stops on Observer Highway: Observer @ Willow and Observer @ Marin Blvd. The bus driver asked me where I was going, and I told him, “The second Observer stop.” He then proceeds to turn LEFT toward the PATH. I said, “Excuse me, isn’t this bus supposed to go down Observer?” And instead of explaining anything, he tells me that I don’t know where I’m going and that he’s following his schedule.
Am I fucking missing something here?! Does the 126 down Willow actually NOT stop on Observer Highway?! Because the route information very clearly says otherwise.
So guess who ended up getting off at the PATH and WALKING all the way to Monroe Street in the fucking rain?! Oh, and I have a BROKEN FOOT.
I’m genuinely furious. Does anyone have an answer for this??!!!!

Call me basic but I always enjoyed a burger from Johnny Rockets and have been wondering when I walk by when they will be back in business as the sign said they'll be back in the spring. I just heard from one of the guys who owns the hardware store next door that they aren't coming back because they are having issues with the city about their neon lights, apparently its no longer allowed?

That sounded very odd to me so I thought maybe someone on here knows more or could shed some light on the matter.

My LO , 22 month old goes to Cresthill uptown, his last class was amazing the teachers were so good , that he picked up on learning , he is speech delayed but with other kids talking so much and teachers so caring and encouraging he had started to.
His new session started yesterday, he was placed in a different class than other classmates ( old class of his ) ,

The teacher is good but not yo the level I have seen in the previous class and kids barely talk and they are around 17/18 month age , I am skeptical of what he’ll learn here .

I've only been here 15+ years so I don't have any cool stories of old old Hoboken to go along with the photo. But I was looking for interesting old photos of Hoboken to put on my wall, and came across this great aerial photo in the Library of Congress archive of the river front and terminal in 1963 , and decided to line it up as best as I could with Google Earth today. Being inspired by u/Ill-Parsnip-8150's post, I'm posting it here also.

Has getting your apartment cleaned in Hoboken gotten insanely expensive or am I losing my mind?
Serious question: what are people actually paying for apartment cleaners in Hoboken right now?

I’ve been looking around and keep getting quotes in the $160–$200 range for pretty basic apartments, which feels crazy compared to what I remember paying even a year or two ago.

For context, I have a 1 bed / 1 bath, roughly 850–900 sq. ft. apartment that is already extremely clean. I’m not talking about a disaster that needs a 5-hour deep clean. I basically want someone to come every month or month and a half and give it a proper professional cleaning.

One example: Somos Organic quoted me $159/month. I asked if I could just do the same cleaning every 6 weeks instead. They said the 6-week option would actually be $175 and capped at 3 hours. So I’d pay more per visit for potentially less cleaning because I’m… booking them less frequently?

Nothing against them specifically — maybe they’re amazing and that’s just what the market costs now. But that interaction sent me down the rabbit hole because I’ve previously paid less to have a two-bedroom cleaned.

And once you add a tip, we’re getting pretty close to $200 to clean an already-clean one-bedroom apartment.

So Hoboken: is $160–$200 seriously the going rate now?

What are you paying, how big is your apartment, how often do they come, and who do you use?

Also curious if anyone here uses Somos and thinks they’re worth the premium.

These pictures can all be found at the Hoboken historical museum ! Hoboken in the 1970s and early 80s — the town we grew up in
I’ve made many posts about old Hoboken before, but these pictures really show the Hoboken that a lot of us grew up in. It was poor, run-down and neglected, but it was home. I love what Hoboken is today, but there are parts of the old town and especially the people different delis and restaurants that I’ll always miss.
Picture 1 . This is garden street in between Newark street and observer highway. Like most of Hoboken at the time, this area was in complete decline. City officials, politicians and pretty much anyone who had a bit of power let the town become what it was. Many of the factory and dock jobs were gone, and the city just went into shambles.
This particular area was broken down, busted up and poor, but I wouldn’t necessarily call it a rough area. Today it’s beautiful, and I do like what it has become, but part of me still misses how things were here. You had grandmas looking out their windows, kids playing in the street or on that corroded old swing set, and some of the young boys in their street jackets hanging around and protecting the block. You had a full cast of different personalities living right on one street.
I hung out around here in the early 80s, so a little after this picture was taken. We used to play in all the abandoned houses around Hoboken. Most of those buildings were probably haunted as hell lol. A lot of them had drug addicts and homeless people living inside. Some even had tunnels in the basements that led God knows where.
This is Downtown, and honestly most of Downtown was pretty fucked up in those days. There isn’t much more information I can find about this particular block, but there are still some old Hobokenites from this neighborhood who live in town today. We aren’t completely gone yet. There are still a few thousand of us around, whether we’re still in Hoboken or at least somewhere in Hudson County.
Picture 2 shows a man with a couple garbage containers in front of an old school bodega. That property is an empty lot today and is supposed to eventually be developed. Supposedly some of it will be for senior citizens, but we’ve heard promises like that from politicians before, only to eventually see more affluent people moving in.
This was also around the area of one of Hoboken’s deadly tenement fires in the 1970s. I believe it was in 1973, around 11th Street and Willow Avenue, where 11 or 12 people were killed, many of them children.
This part of Uptown was extremely poor back then. Much of Willow Avenue had a large Puerto Rican population and there was definitely crime and poverty. From the late 50s to the mid 90s you definitely would’ve wanted to avoid 8th thru 11th and Willow it was rampant with slums and gangs. They were a lot of punks and really bad people that hung around there at night. Then on 14th and Willow avenue (I’ve talked about it before) forget about it, it was crime ridden filled with a few different gangs. 14th and Willow was well known for robbing people at gun point for many years. You had to carry your self well around a lot of old Hoboken people would take advantage if you weren’t equipped with street knowledge and fighting. For a lot of folks growing up here we all had some sense of a traumatizing childhood from the gangs in Hoboken. Other than that you met a lot of wonderful people along Willow Avenue.
By the 1970s, Hoboken had a large Hispanic population, mainly Puerto Rican. They brought a beautiful culture to our city, but Puerto Rican families here were also dealing with some terrible conditions. There was the fear of crime, but also the very real fear of these old tenement buildings burning.
In 1967, riots were happening in cities across the country, mainly involving African American communities fighting against discrimination and terrible conditions. Hoboken had its own unrest that year. Puerto Ricans, who had a huge presence around First Street back then, began rioting over the mistreatment they were facing.
And it wasn’t always about their Italian, Yugoslavian or Irish neighbor living next door. A lot of the anger was directed toward the police, landlords and city officials. For most of us, we were all poor and stuck in this together. You had poor white kids and poor Hispanic kids growing up together, as it should be. The riots got pretty nasty and even made national headlines in those days.
Picture 3 is I believe , 3rd and river street. Again, you can see boarded-up buildings, empty storefronts and the overall neglect of the neighborhood. This was our childhood, impoverished streets and all. This was just normal Hoboken to us.
And somehow through all of it, we came to love this beautiful little town called Hoboken. We repped Hoboken anywhere we went, and most of us still do today. It didn’t matter how run-down it looked or what outsiders thought of it. It was our home and we were proud of it.
I don’t know who took this picture, but whenever I try to explain what Hoboken looked and felt like during those years, this is one of those pictures that says more than I ever could.
Pictures are inside the old Mario’s Bar at 3rd and Park Ave. My friend Franky actually got inside and took these pictures. As you can see, the place is completely decrepit and basically falling apart.
In my days, I believe it was a Yugoslavian-owned bar. You had bikers, cops, working guys and just about every character you could imagine coming through there. It was a real dive bar, much like the Wilton and a bunch of other places that used to exist around Hoboken. I hung out in Mario’s quite a few times myself.
A lot of people think Hoboken has a lot of bars now, but back then there were literally bars in every part of the city, not just Washington Street. Every neighborhood seemed to have its own little spots and its own crowd.
They’re turning this building into condos now. Even though the place became an eyesore, I really wish they could have saved it and kept it as a bar. Fix the building up, keep some of that old character inside and turn it into a cool modern dive bar with decent prices. Hoboken could still use a place like that.
I’m not going to pretend everything about old Hoboken was better. It wasn’t. There was poverty, crime, fires, abandoned buildings and plenty of things nobody should want to bring back. It was the greatest place in the world to grow up in. Everybody knew everybody. The old Italians, Irish, Yugoslavians, Puerto Ricans African Americans and Indians, and everyone else were living on top of each other in this tiny town.
Hoboken is cleaner, safer and more beautiful today, and that’s a good thing. But sometimes when I look at these old pictures, I don’t miss the broken buildings or the crime or the devasting fires. I miss the people and the characters that walked all along these streets so many memories and faces it’s indescribable. We used to have so much fun in this town it was a world to its own!
That’s the Hoboken I remember.

Has anyone else been experiencing any issues with online grocery delivery to Hoboken over the last few weeks?

I typically order groceries given the lack of stores Hoboken has. I’ve ordered from 2 separate retailers over the past week and both times have received my delivery with full bags of items missing. Given this is now happening across stores, I’m wondering if the issue may be connected to the delivery drivers.

The retailers have been understanding with refunds, but at the end, of the day I’d rather just have what I ordered than money back.

Curious if this happening to anyone else?
