Question Time to get into Humankind?
Apologies if you're sick and tired of these kinds of posts :(.
Anyways, I was wondering if it's time to get in, now that it seems that this is the final iteration of Humankind?
Things to note: I love civ switching, and it's part of the reason I got Civ 7 on its first sale (partly also the fact that Civ has always seemed "safer" as a bet). No worries about that.
I do worry that there might still be a lot of unfixed bugs.
Avatars sound interesting, but I heard you can't play against a cast of avatars you design on your own, which was a bit of a turnoff for me.
I like playing SimCity style games where I focus on beautifying and polishing a few select cities with wonders, can I do that in HK?

Most of the bugs (if not all) have been patched on PC. The game has made much progress from release. As for creating your own enemy AI personas - you can very much do that for some time now. I myself enjoy an occasional game against Captain Benjamin Sisko thanks to this feature 😉
Citybuilding is not really on the same level of granularity as in SimCity, but the visuals are great and with each culture you get a unique emblematic district. You can also turn on peaceful mode, so that the AIs do not attack you unprovoked and you can focus on building. Hope this clears all up and have a blast with Humankind!

Oh, that's just what I wanted to hear!
Ah, no, what I meant was building cities to get perfect locations aesthetically - a Villa surrounded by mountains, a temple on a cliff, etc. Thanks for answering my concerns directly :).

You absolutely can do that! In fact there's certain civ picks that specialise in building unique tile improvements with unique appearances, and some of them benefit from surrounding terrain, so you can totally lean into beautification.

I played Humankind when it first released. And I tried to like Civ 7 but the way it does eras as a hard stop in the gameplay back to the lobby, pick your new empire and go again with effectively 3 seperate games played concurrently, I hated it.
Humankinds era system doesn't interrupt the gameplay flow and it doesn't invalidate half of whatever you had been doing in the previous era.

Humankind is my favorite video game of all time. I played Civ 1-5 heavily.. I've enjoyed Humankind so much, that I haven't even tried Civ 6 (some of the reviews were offputting).
That said, not every former Civ lover likes humankind. It's not a technology race, you win based on collecting Fame points which are based on population, science, number of wonders, money earned, units defeated in battle, etc... I like the extra dimension that brings, as opposed to "however launches the rocket first wins". Humankind does have a rocket project, but it earns you fame points, so you can still lose, even if you are the first to launch the rocket.
Edit, you can also easily win this game without a single war being fought too.. Or you can conquer the world, it's up to you.

What I can say is I bought the game on ps5 3 years ago, I simply couldn't get into it. It was convoluted and unrefined. I recently bought the game on steam for a few pounds and with mods, it's a new game, a game I thoroughly enjoy. If you were to play the game, I would suggest using mods.

Mods are not essential. I play vanilla and thoroughly enjoy it. This game scratches that civ just one more turn itch for me and if you're interested try it out. Every time I play it's hard for me to put it down.

Yup, same. I got back into Humankind a little while ago after getting bored of Civ 6 (and never managing to get into Civ 7) and ever since then I haven't been able to go back to Civ. And I play entirely vanilla!

Its one of my most played games. I love the combat and diplomacy. Its pretty stable on PC in terms of bugs or crashes. I still have bursts of loving this game. I think if you are open to these kinds of games, you should definitely play it.

The best time to get into Humankind was in the past. The second best time is now.

Tbh, Id recommend Endless Legend 1 or 2 more, even if you dont particulary like fantasy
Also if you like citybuilding, check out the Anno games

I still really enjoy it, and there are some mods like the VIP mod that improve it too.
The game isn't perfect, but I enjoy it way more than Civ.
The way to success is fighting, and luckily the combat is one of the best parts.
You can look up a couple of old gameplay videos to get a flavour, but there's no substitute for trying it yourself!
