The photographer told the children to look closely into the lens and sit perfectly still. From beneath the heavy velvet drape, a damp, rhythmic breathing began to fill the quiet studio. The youngest boy started to cry, whispering that the fingers holding his shoulder felt cold and much too long. By the time the flash powder ignited, there was no mother left under the cloth—only the thing that had smelled them from the dark.
