India's highway expansion under Bharatmala and its ongoing Black Spot Rectification efforts depend heavily on safety infrastructure that can withstand years of weather, traffic impact, and neglect. This piece looks at why plain painted crash barriers often fail early, how hot dip galvanizing solves the corrosion problem at a metallurgical level, and why choosing the right galvanizing partner matters just as much as the barrier design itself for long-term, low-maintenance highway safety across India's varied terrain.

Nepal’s recent flood made me look beyond the disaster itself and at the resilience of its infrastructure.

Nepal faces a difficult engineering environment: steep Himalayan terrain, landslides, floods, earthquakes and glacial hazards. At the same time, critical infrastructure such as roads, bridges, hydropower and trade corridors is often concentrated in narrow valleys.

The question I found interesting is: Is the problem simply weak infrastructure, or are we designing infrastructure using assumptions that may no longer match the hazards we face?

I also looked at how countries such as Japan and Switzerland approach infrastructure in similarly hazardous mountainous environments, particularly through hazard mapping, redundancy, monitoring, slope stabilisation and multidisciplinary planning.

This raises a bigger question:

For a country like Nepal, where avoiding hazardous terrain is often impossible, should the focus be on building stronger individual structures, or on designing an entire infrastructure network that can continue functioning even when some components fail?

I made a short video exploring this question and would genuinely like to hear the engineering perspective.

A few questions I’m curious about:

• Is Nepal’s main problem weak infrastructure, poor planning, or lack of redundancy?

• Should countries like Nepal prioritize stronger individual structures or a more resilient, interconnected network?

• What can Nepal realistically learn from countries like Japan or Switzerland?

• Can AI and realt time monitoring meaningfully improve disaster resilience when data and infrastructure themselves are limited??

who is actually accountable for this?

Is it the municipality? PWD? The contractor who built the road? The department responsible for maintenance? Or does responsibility just get passed around until everyone forgets about it?
Why do we wait for people to complain, accidents to happen, or a major event to expose a bad road before anything gets done?

I genuinely don’t understand how we keep calling Gurugram a modern city when basic infrastructure fails like this.

After the recent heavy rainfall, a massive crater — reportedly almost 10 feet deep — has opened up at IFFCO Chowk, one of the busiest and most prominent locations in Gurugram.

This isn’t some isolated rural road. This is a major corporate and IT hub with offices of multinational companies and thousands of people commuting every day.

Every monsoon, the cycle seems to be the same: heavy rain → waterlogging → potholes → road damage → traffic chaos → temporary repairs → repeat next year.

And honestly, this isn’t just about one political party or one government. Governments change, but the underlying infrastructure problems remain.

If one of India’s most important cities struggles this badly with basic rainfall, drainage, road quality and traffic management, it raises a much bigger question about how we are planning and maintaining our urban infrastructure.

What do people living in Gurugram think? Is there actually any long-term solution being implemented, or are we just going to keep fixing the same roads every monsoon?

The video shows the semi-high-speed train navigating the challenging Sakleshpur–Subrahmanya Road ghat section on the Bengaluru-Mangaluru route. The railway stretch passes through dense greenery, steep gradients, sharp curves, tunnels and bridges, creating a dramatic backdrop for the modern train.
