Product Discussion What kind of plants seeds?

Hi all,

I do what I call bottle plants where I make self sustaining ecosystems/plant terrariums in old bottles. The large bottle with the alocasia sticking out the top and the ferns inside has been going for 7 years. The smaller wine bottles are about 8 months strong and are from polkadot plant seeds. See photos.

I'm looking for ideas for plants that would do well in bottles, typically old clear wine bottles?

So plants that don't need a ton of space, like high humidity.

These need to be grown from seed so they can actually fit through the bottle neck. I was wanting to grow fittonias in one but I've come to learn it's extremely hard to find seeds!

Houseplant Close Up A proud plant parent moment 🍃🥰

I got a seed starting kit with a packet of viola seeds for free. I already have grow lights for my house plants so I decided to see if I could get them to flower. I live in an apartment, so no place to plant them in ground. I was also skeptical the grow light would be enough to get them to flower if they germinated.

Anyways I planted the seeds July 6th and my first plant has started flowering! I have two more that are budding 🎉 Here’s a picture of the most robust plant of the group, and one when they first sprouted.

Plant Discussion Lavender Sprouts

Hiiii before and after of my lavender sprouts. What am I doing incorrectly?

She’s about 40 days old from seed to sprout.

She sits in a planter on my north facing Chicago balcony. So in terms of light, she probably gets around 8 true hours between sunrise and sunset.

She’s in like regular potting soil

It’s been rainy so the sprouts shot up easily with out me watering it but now it’s quite hot and not a lot of precipitation has fallen in Chicago.

What am I doing wrong? Just moved her inside.

Plant Discussion Finally gave all my plant stuff one place to live

I kept misplacing my pruning scissors and realized I had plant stuff basically everywhere.

Plant food under the sink, ties in a drawer, extra pots in the closet, spray bottles in whatever room I last used them.

I looked at a few small carts from IKEA, SONGMICS, GARVEE and a couple other places before finding one narrow enough to fit next to the cabinet.

Nothing exciting, but it's really nice having everything in one place now.

If the pruning scissors disappear again, at least I know where to start looking.

Plant Discussion Fiddle leaf leaves turning gray

Hi,

I watered my fiddle leaf then went on vacation for 2 weeks.. came back and saw the leaves droopy and soil was dry so I watered it. When I came back I noticed one leaf have a gray edge like in picture 1, the next day the entire leaf was like that plus another leaf. I broke off these two leaves (pics 1 and 2) and then just now i noticed the leaf in the first picture showing similar symptoms.

Any ideas?

Houseplant Close Up Variegated or Just a Stress Issue?

Post image
4 Upvotes

Hey all, been noticing little leaves pop up here and there on my money tree. It’s always done this and I was always under the impression my money tree was just being fussy and it was a stress response. Definitely follow the care requirements and only water when soil’s pretty much bone dry. It’s otherwise healthy and fast growing, constantly pruning it back.

Is that yellow-ish bunch of shoots a lucky, rare variegation? Or am I just being hopeful and its actually just old leaves dying off? Let me know your thoughts!!

I asked Google about these small white fuzzy dots said it was root starts? At first glance thought it was mealy bugs but it’s not. It’s a cutting I keep in water. I’ve had Pothos for a long time and I’ve never seen this?!

Plant Discussion Advice on trimming my olive tree

Post image
4 Upvotes

I know I should cut off the stem that is branching over to the right, but I have been putting it off.

Now I am ready to do it. Should I just go to the place where it is coming off the other stem that is more upright and cut there?

Do I then stake up the remaining stem to vertical?

Can I take the piece I cut off and root it just the way it is? Or do I need to cut a lot off?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Plant Discussion Skylight question

I am looking at installing a skylight in my bedroom. Some of the available panels will filter out UV and infra-red light, which seems like a good idea. But would the light still help plants grow, or do they need that spectrum?

Thanks for any advice/websites you can provide!

Plant Discussion Need potting suggestions for a Philodendron.

I bought this Philodendron from an online store 3 years ago, and I'm not entirely sure if that's the correct name. Its original potting soil was only coco peat fiber. I recently trimmed it, and now I'd like to know how to repot it properly and help it grow larger. I feel it's struggling in its current pot.

Could you suggest the best potting soil option? I'd prefer to use materials I have around home I have basic gardening compost, coco peat, and pots and I don't want to buy anything new. I want it to grow large and thrive. Please help this newbie out!

Plant Discussion Need help on my pothos to be fuller

Post image
15 Upvotes

Hello! I'm looking for some help on my pothos. It's amazing that it has survived about 3 years since I got it as a gift. The question is how do I make it look a little more "fuller"? The vines look nice and strong, but the new leaves are only growing at the tips. The leaves in the middle just turn brown and die. I would ideally like it to be more "oomph" in the middle parts.

My current regimen is water every 3 weeks or so or until I see the soil really dry. It is under a cheap grow lamp for about 6 hours a day. I haven't used any fertilizer or any extra things. Any suggestions or is this beyond repair?
