I am entirely new to the series. I don't know anything about the lore, or characters (aside from Disney, Final Fantasy, and now Sora, Riku, and Kairi.) It's hasn't even been an hour since I've beaten this game. And I am... conflicted.
First, the pros.
The soundtrack is fantastic. Yoko Shimomura my goddess. I knew the soundtrack was gonna be great when I saw her name involved. I heard that piano theme and got nostalgic for a game I've never even played. It's so good.
This game is full of whimsical fun and charm. Definitely feels like a Disney game (in a good way)
I loved the Coliseum. Getting to face off against Final Fantasy characters was pretty fun.
Leon. After getting used to the fact he's called Leon, and not Squall, I've actually enjoyed his character a lot. Much more than a certain blonde man...
Some of the worlds were damn great. Halloween Town specifically being my absolute favorite. Idk how popular that opinion is, but it was definitely the one I enjoyed the most. The boss against Oogey Boogey was fun. The second boss against him? Kinda mid.
Hollow Bastion was great as well. The boss fight against Maleficent was glorious. My personal favorite boss in the game. The fight against Riku... more on that later.
The characters are great. I know I talked about Leon, but i really gotta emphasize how good the characters are. They are full of charm and wonder. Riku annoyed me, but that's okay.
I mentioned the Coliseum, but I gotta reiterate. SEPHIROTH! Such a hard boss, but damn good. I actually shit my pants when I fought him.
The ending was gorgeous. The song 'Simple and Clean' hit me hard with those beautiful visuals. It's stuck in my head!
But when there's pros, there's also cons.
Sora's jump feels really weird. It feels like there's always a delay in it. It messes me up when I'm trying to platform.
The combat was really slow and clunky. I know that by the end it isn't so bad. But for a big chunk of the game, it feels really bad for me. Especially in earlier worlds.
The camera was awkward to maneuver with sometimes. It felt like a detriment at times. Like when I fight Riku at Hollow Bastion. The camera being too close to Sora gave me a couple of deaths.
I said some worlds were great, but it also has its stinkers. Like Atlantica. From the level design, the combat, and movement, it's one of the worst things I've had to play in an RPG. The music was annoying, and the boss fights against Ursula were awful. And it's all thanks to how Sora controls underwater.
Deep Jungle was another bad one. The constant backtracking was really annoying. The vines? Terrible. I did kinda like the Clayton boss. And sliding on the tree was also cool.
I don't know how people think about this, but I personally hated the Gummi ship. It felt really slow to get one place to the other. I guess I like upgrading the ship, but it's still not my favorite thing.
The difficulty spike was pretty bad. Usually, I don't mind when a game is hard. I like me some Mega Man and the like. But with how this game controls, and how awkward it feels battle, it definitely made those spikes more noticeable.
Donald... just Donald.
And the things idk how to feel:
The story is fine. I like interacting with the Disney characters, but they don't really amount to much. Like we help the people of the kingdoms, but you could literally ignore them and nothing would change.
The final boss against Ansem was good at first... but it just kept going... and going... and going. By the time I defeated him, I was exhausted. 7 phased is insane.
Riku as a character. I said the characters are great, but I still don't know how to feel about Riku. I'll know when I play the rest of the games, but the way he turned into an antagonist was... kinda pathetic. I know he was manipulated, but c'mon now. Him and Sora literally want the same thing, you don't gotta overcomplicate it Riku.
Cloud. He looks cool, but him working with Hades kind of left a sour taste in my mouth. Like huh? Even when Cloud was stoic in FFVII, he wouldn't sell his soul to the devil. (He didn't sell it, but made a deal. Which isn't much better.)
Kingdom Hearts is a game with a lot of whimsy. It's fun, and vibrant with a fantastic soundtrack. But the cons really hold it back from being better than it should be. It's definitely aged.
6.5/10. It did leave me wanting more. So the next game I'll be playing, if the timeline is correct, is Chain of Memories.
