KHCOM Playing every Kingdom Hearts game until IV comes out.(review 2)

So... Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories... it is definitely... A game. Is it good? NO! Last post, i saw some comments saying I should skip COM and play 2. I should have listened. Because I'm not gonna lie, I gave up on this game. I've never felt so much hatred towards a game in so long.

The pros:

No Gummi ship. Yeah, thankfully there was no Gummi ship. I could instantly get to those levels without having a boring ass mini game.

The soundtrack. Of course it was. Yoko Shimomura can make magic even in the crappiest of games. I heard she broke her back from carrying this game.

Riku is actually pretty decent this time around. Yeah, his arc may be very simple, but i liked it for what it was. His self acceptance was undoubtedly the strongest point of the story. I would argue it's the only good thing in it. Funny because I didn't like him in KH1

I like Naminé. Her manipulating Sora's memories, and make him think that she was always there was pretty interesting. Her redemption was nice.

Axel's design is cool.

And the ending to the game was pretty nice. It builds up the sequel really well.

Now the bad...

I appreciate that the game tried to make the levels a bit bigger, but quantity doesn't mean quality. Those rooms were so empty, and small that it felt less engaging, and honestly, kinda lifeless.

The fights get really repetitive. Once you fight against one enemy, you've fought them all. The combat was just not fun. Either because of its RNG, which I will get into... the gameplay is Monotonous. Plain and simple.

The story legit felt like filler. I did not feel like nothing was that important. Pluto really couldn't wait or rest with us? Yeah, just keep running, it's not like we need you or anything. The Disney stuff felt more like filler than in KH1, which is saying something! Sure, Organization XIII is important, and Riku's character is actually decent this time. But aside from those very small moments... i did not care that much. So much filler, only for less than 20% of the story to actually matter. (I heard the story for this game is really liked, sorry, but I didn't vibe with it.)

The card keys are so annoying. Especially when you don't have a specific number or color, so you must engage in boring fights, and get those cards you need. Ugh, I did not like that at all either.

Some boss fights were atrocious. Especially the one that made me drop the game entirely. LARXENE. That might have been one of the worst boss fights in any game I've played. And it wasn't because she was hard. Far from it. THE STUPID RNG! I was in level 30 or so, and even then, the boss fight did stuff that should be straight up illegal. EVEN WHEN I USED MY JAFAR SO SHE DIDN'T DESTROY ANY OF MY CARDS... SHE STILL DID IT BECAUSE SHE FEKT LIKE IT! OH BUT WHEN I USE A 0 CARD, *SHE* GETS TO IGNORE IT! HOW IS THAT EVEN FAIR?!?!?!

I threw my controller down due to how stressed and angry I got. Even when I was SO CLOSE TO KILLING HER! Suddenly, she feels like doing a comeback like that Street Fighter clip, and I end up dying ANYWAY!

CONGRATULATIONS LARXENE FOR MAKING ME QUIT THIS HORRIBLE GAME!

Now for the things I'm mixed on:

The way Sora and the gang go back to square one was... i guess it was clever? But it also felt kinda sloppy.

I did not know how to feel about Sora's character in this game. There were moments he was kinda unlikable, but other times he was fine.

The boss fights were inconsistent. I like that this time there actually needs to be a strategy involved. Sometimes. Because it's still mostly RNG. Some fights were pretty bad, like the Parasite cage, and Oogey Boogey. But even without those two, I was left feeling empty for the most part.

Chain of memories was a baaaaaaad game. I know it may sound like exaggeration, but it's one of the worst games I've played in some time. Not just RPGs. There was never a moment when I was playing the game where I enjoyed myself. Genuinely hated it.

1/10. Next game is either 358/2 days or II. I'm not entirely sure. But I am taking a biiiiiig break. After 9 and half hours, I gave up on this game. The second game in the series, and it's one of the biggest Ls I've seen a franchise take.

Sorry this was super negative. I really tried to like this game. Maybe too hard. But I did not like this one bit.

Onwards and upwards.

Edit: This is how I decided to spend my free day btw.

Edit 2: Before you ask, yes, I played a tad of The GBA version. Did not like it very much either. Fun fact: technically this was my first KH game. I just didn't know until I played it again lol

Discussion How the fuck am I supposed to fight these Data Battles?

So I recently re-bought KH3 on Steam and started a new Critical run with Zero EXP. Got through the entire game at lvl 1, so I thought I'd be somewhat prepared for ReMind since I never played the DLC on console. Once I got to the DLC I disabled Zero EXP and grinded till lvl 40 because I actually wanted to experience it normally, and then I got to the Data Battles.

I know they're supposed to be hard, but what the fuck is this difficulty spike. I just finished a lvl 1 critical run and these bosses are making me feel like I have no idea how to play the game anymore. I expected them to be hard, but some of these fights feel like I can't even figure out how the hell I'm supposed to approach them.

So do I just grind to lvl 99 and make my life easier, or am I better off staying at a lower level and just learning the fights properly?(Considering I never seen a desperation move yet i find unplausable to get to learn the fights at all)

For people who did the Data Battles at lvl 1, how the fuck did you manage that? Because right now I'm getting humbled by KH3 bosses and it's something I never expected to happen.

Want to play Kingdom Hearts 1

I’m sorry if you get this question a lot but me and my wife want to get kingdom hearts 1 because she loved it as a child and wants to replay it. I have an Xbox series s and am very confused on the bundles. My question is what is the cheapest way for me to get the first game. Or I guess what is the best deal might also be a good question. I am seeing a KH 1.5+2.5 remix currently for 50 but it’s weird that they seemingly have the same thing coming out in October available for preorder for cheaper and I don’t know if there’s a difference so it definitely feels bad to pay more. Thanks in advance for your help!

Personally, I hated the card system and dropped the game eventually. Ended up reading the manga and searched up lore, and the story seems great. What did you guys think of it?

KH2 Hot take: KH2 isn’t the best in the series. I wouldn’t even consider it the 2nd best.

When I played KH2 after playing KH1, I was intrigued. Who is this kid Roxas? What’s his connection to Sora? What are these nobodies? The “mystery” element that I loved in KH1 was in full effect. My boy Squall is back. It looks like we’re off to a bigger adventure.

But then I reached the Disney worlds… the worst Disney worlds I’ve played in this series, bar none. This is factoring in KH1, BBS, KH3. And they’re so LONG

And the gameplay, where tf is the dodge roll? Why am I constantly having to press triangle? Phil, SHUT THE F UP! I was annoyed…

But that ending is beautiful man. Utada is so beautiful. And Xemnas is the best villian in KH imo

But unfortunately, this did not save the game for me. It is very overrated to me. The gameplay, level design, Disney worlds. I’m good off this game

KH1, KH3, 2.8, BBS better like Youngboy

Most interesting headcanon I've ever heard. [Series plot spoilers] Spoiler

I have a friend who only played through the Nintendo titles and, way back in the day, played KH2. She didn't remember much about the plot and wanted to understand the series. So, being the rabid fan I am, I boot up the collection to go through it with her. All is going well. Any questions she has from what she remembers I've been answering to the best of my abilities.

Then we get to Sora stabbing himself, and I make my first mistake of explaining how this action made Namine and Roxas.

I then explain how nobodies are created, and how Roxas and Namine are special cases due to the heart hotel shenanigans Sora gets up to. Because she remembers the Roxas being needed to complete Sora plot of 2, She asks a few questions about nobodies and how they turn back to people. I make the fatal decision to explain how a person can be recompleted by their nobody and heartless being destroyed so their heart and body can rejoin together.

Then, later, as the credits are rolling on kh1, she asks me how Riku got recompleted.

I ask what she means. She said "well his heart got thrown into the world of darkness, right? And his body, or I guess what would be his nobody, is being piloted by Ansem's heartless, until Sora beats him right? So he should have a heartless roaming around because his body and heart got separated, and last I checked, he ISN'T a princess of heart."

And I'm not gonna lie, I don't have an answer for this, and she knows it by how I'm scrambling for an explanation. So I finally give what is probably the actual answer, "Nomura probably hadn't gotten that far with the writing for the nobodies by this point. Or Ansem ejecting Riku's heart into WoD was probably done in a way that didn't create a heartless or nobody."

Later, she messages me, "You know what? You know that giant behemoth heartless that was in the hollow bastion keyhole? The one you said had no plot relevance except being a big monster? I'm just gonna say that was Riku's heartless, and since it was destroyed and Riku's body being piloted by Ansem was destroyed, he got recompleted that way."

And I know that's not how it works. She probably knows it too, but it's so funny thinking about how she came to that conclusion and created a headcanon I'd never heard of until now.

Idk just something funny that I felt like sharing.

Discussion Kingdom Hearts Games (Mainline) Ranked

Here's my quick, rapid fire ranking of all the Kingdom Hearts games. Tell me what you think, everyone! Of course, just please be respectful, and also keep in mind that I value gameplay over story pretty substantially.

(Not that that means I don't take story into account at all.) Also, though I don't specify to keep things simple, I am talking about the remakes/rereleases for each of these games. So Final Mix for 1 and 2. Re-CoM for Chain of Memories, ect.

  1. Kingdom Hearts 2: The overall best. This is a pretty popular opinion, so I don't feel the need to defend it too much. It's the overall best in terms of gameplay, only in contention with Coded, and it has the second best story as well. It follows off of Days and Chain of Memories beautifully, (or leads into Days really well, if you're playing the series for the first time, and trying not to spoil anything) plus has some of the best writing. It also, in my opinion, has the second best inclusion of the Disney worlds. The Disney worlds INCLUDED are also based as hell, minus Atlantica of course. We got a fucking Lion King world bro, WHO DOESN'T LIKE LION KING? Okay maybe that one's biased, but that doesn't take away from the variety of awesome locales we get in this game, in addition to its majorly improved combat and summons. It also has droves of charm, which you'll come to find I value a lot in games. I love games with a distinct "vibe" to them, which will influence a lot of my later decisions. Everything from its opening, to its character interactions all reek of a certain sauce few other games in the series manage, that make it truly feel special.
  2. Kingdom Hearts 1: Great gameplay, that is extremely replayable. While it doesn't have the BEST story in the series, it's still the third best, and the plot is very simple, and clean compared to other games, making it extremely easy to come back to. It's by far the best "standalone" experience of the series. As in, if you had to play one game, just one game in this series, this is the one I think most would agree should be the defacto answer. It's a taste of Kingdom Hearts almost everyone can get behind, even if it's less refined and overall splendid as 2, and does show its age at certain (minor) points. The Disney worlds are also at their best here. Not only is the selection itself very solid, (I find that this game, just like 2, features the classic hand drawn era of Disney a lot more then later games in the series, which I find is sorely missing from those later games) but it also incorporates them into the story very seamlessly. It has a LOT of charm too. By far the best "vibes" of the series, which as I said before, I value a lot. There's so many LITTLE things in this game, you know? To this day, so many are learning NEW things about this game, just because of all the little things the devs packed into it, through love and devotion to what it was striving for. Really the only thing holding it back is just that again, its overall story, and gameplay are just slightly less refined then they are in 2.
  3. Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days: I'm aware that this is our first hot take, so let me explain. I actually think Days' gameplay isn't THAT bad. It's certainly its weak point compared to the story yes, but I don't think that it's so bad that Days can go any lower then my bronze medal. Sure, I will admit, that if you play Days the way you'd play most other KH games, or try to do it in one or two sittings as part of a grander marathon, you'll DEFINITELY dislike it. You'll find it woefully repetitive, and most who play Days say the story was the only thing that kept them going for that reason, if even that. However, I think that more people should treat Days something like Animal Crossing. Just like with that game, if you instead treat it like a "play in bite sized chunks, and do a few missions for the day" game, instead of something that needs to be grinded, or done all in one sitting, I actually then think that the mission structure makes it a very fun "time killer" game, instead of repetitive, like most people say. Even cozy. And I LOVE cozy games like that. It also has the BEST story in the series, bar none, and some of the best songs as well. It massively improves Chain of Memories just by its nature of existing, massively expands Roxas' character, and introduces my personal favorite character, Xion. The DS also adds A LOT to its charm value, using the dual screens in very creative ways for the story. I wish more DS games did that. The two screens have MASSIVE potential for immersive lore significance. Days is one of the few games that understands that. Also AWESOME MULTIPLAYER.
  4. Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep: Very unique compared to other games in the series. And it has okay gameplay alongside a quite good story to boot. I love the characters it introduces, even if the Days trio I tend to appreciate a lot more. I tend to go back and forth between this game, and Coded a lot. Because I would argue Coded is more "fun" to actually just sit down and play, and has a bit of DS charm to it as well, but this game is mostly fun, with an also mostly good story, and so one could make the argument it's OVERALL better then Coded. (Most would in fact.) Sure, I value gameplay above all, so you'd think I prefer Coded, but I think the sum of this game's parts makes it slightly more enjoyable. It's still a really close competition though, for me. I do agree however that this game really took a hit in the combat department compared to 2, and that's a problem I feel we have been having in the series ever since. It's definitely not an "unfun" game, but it can get frustrating at points, which is something that I can't say compared to the games before it. (Well, minus the bosses in Days, lol.) Other then that though, its contribution to the larger narrative is huge, and mostly satisfying, and it also pairs really well with Days. (I know I'm using what should be BbS's section here to glaze Days some more, but I love how Days sort of acts like the "glue" holding all these games together. Everything just connects back, or to it really nicely.) The only thing I think the game truly lacks in completely is some charm of its own compared to other games in the series despite its uniqueness. But that's not enough to knock it down to many points for me, since again, I think the sum of its parts is better.
  5. Kingdom Hearts: Coded: Alright, this one is another hot take, so I'll explain myself. Yes, I am painfully aware that the story is forgettable as hell. And largely unimportant as well. This is one of the few games where it feels like its major plot beats could have just as easily been in one of the other games, and executed much better in those games, then they are in Coded. I agree with all of that fully, yes. And it IS something that is quite hard to look past. But... one simply can't ignore it's one of the most fun games to actually "play" in the series. Rivalling 2 in terms of gameplay. And not to be all "posh" but I think it's CRAZY that most people admit that, while also saying it's one of the worst in the series DESPITE that. It's a game first, and foremost isn't it? So we can agree, that gameplay being so high for Coded is a VERY strong attribute for it to have, right? For that reason, I can forgive its forgettable story, even if it is the main thing holding the game back. It's just damn fun, and the mechanics are ones that I really wish would come back in later games. If we could have the systems this game introduced, with a better story behind it, and the inclusion of Disney worlds executed as they were in 1, then I honestly think we could be in for my dream Kingdom Hearts game. And also, there's a certain undeniable charm to the game as well, with it being on the DS. And I like how it uses the two screens, even if I think it was done better in Days overall. The DS is just a cool console overall, and I think KH lends itself better to it then most people do.
  6. Kingdom Hearts 3: The gameplay is okay, but the story, is sort of mixed for me, albeit with cool moments to it. It's the first game on the list that I think has issues both gameplay wise, AND story wise. It has some of the same gameplay issues as Birth by Sleep (albeit with some minor improvements) but with a way less tight knit story to make up for it. I wouldn't say there's a lot of "plot holes" per say... I just think that the ideas should have been more fleshed out, and that certain things were rushed. It's a story that's "good in concept, but not execution" I think is the best way to put it. For example, as a huge Days fan, I simply cannot forgive how it undermines Xion's sacrifice... and rushes her return. But then, on the other hand, I also love that we get to see Roxas, Xion, and company enjoy ice cream again, on the clocktower. I think that the Disney worlds are included at their worst here, mostly being recaps of the Disney movies. And yet I still find them, and Sora's interaction with them charming. It also lacks truly classic Disney rep (that isn't returning) compared to the other games, and mostly uses more modern worlds. But then again, we get see Donald use Zettaflare. That's the problem with 3 in my opinion. I love some of the ideas. And I love the fan service. But it's executed in such a way that I find myself tilting my head. It's poor storytelling decisions, mixed with some of the coolest character moments in the series, hence why I feel so conflicted on it. I like it, but also am baffled by it.
  7. Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance I'm mixed on both its gameplay and mechanics, as well as its story. I like that it tried to innovate, but just don't see much value in it besides that. I don't hate it by any means, and it has some charm to it for sure. But while I DO value a game's "vibes" a lot as I said, I can't really look past the fact it's just the most "there" Kingdom Hearts game. And is pretty forgettable all things considered. I still don't understand why the World Ends with You characters are included, despite that game having no relation to KH's story at all, apparently. Any attempts to explain it just make me scratch my head. Like, it's very clearly implied in the game itself that there's a connection, which would seem to imply the universes are linked, or at least a version of them are, just like with the Disney worlds, and Final Fantasy characters. But it goes absolutely nowhere, and Nomura confirmed that there's no connection whatsoever. Probably even less of a connection then there is with the Disney or Final Fantasy stuff, which already pulls from "alternative" versions of those worlds. It DID introduce me to that game though, so I thank it for that. Really, DDD is just "the game you play to understand 3" and that's it. Again, I don't hate it beyond finding it average, and while I don't click with the story, it IS important to later games in the series, it's just that compared to all the others, there's really NO replayability basically at all. I think the Dream Eaters were a cool concept though, and I wouldn't mind them maybe finding an excuse to try it again.
  8. Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories: I don't like its mechanics too much. Unfortunately I'm just not a fan of card based RPGs. Maybe it's something that will grow on me with time, but for now I just just cannot look past the fact that it is by far the least fun KH game gameplay wise in the series. I think that's more of a preference thing though, as people who say that they DO like card games tend to put this one a lot higher. And I will admit that there's a lot of strategy, and thought that goes into it, which I CAN appreciate. I WANT to love Chain of Memories so much, but at this current point in my life, I just can't find myself doing so. I also find its story lackluster (for the most part) since you're mostly just going through KH1 stuff again. I REALLY hate how tied to KH1 this game is. I really wish it tried to do its own stuff more often, as that alone could at least bump it above Dream Drop Distance for me, but alas, you're visiting the same worlds, seeing a lot of the same stuff, and doing it with a way worse combat system, which just makes it "the chore between 1 and 2" for me. There are 3 things that I like about it though. For one, it's another game that ties together with Days REALLY well. And I think Days actually retroactively makes this game's story hit much harder then it would otherwise. I also love Mickey's inclusion in this game, almost as much as I do in 2. Mickey's one of my favorite characters ever, so I just love that he's prominently featured here. And also, yeah Namine rocks. Also, I think I might actually like this game a lot better if I played the GBA version of it. That version looks a lot more unique, and interesting. And also SKYROCKETS in the vibes department that I love so much thanks to the sprite work, and GBA style music. Alas, I haven't played that version yet. If I do though, expect maybe a jump in its position.

Discussion Keyblade Evolutions in KH4

I really have a feeling we could see keyblade evolutions in KH4, and it would be sick af. Like actual permanent physical evolution.

Something where a keyblade can evolve and hit a new physical design + improved stats. Maybe 2-3 evolutions per keyblade?

They've experimented with different leveling mechanisms for keyblades across some games.

And Union X was the first to do an evolution mechanism for keyblades.

Given the stronger lore connection/direction to Union X, I could see it happening.

Given there will be less but longer worlds, I could also see it happening.

It just makes sense.

Discussion Do you think Aqua will get better, or is she ruined for good/never gets better?

I was reading old KH3 criticism threads and story issues I agreed with. Might be my mistake doing that, but I am reminded that she needed to look stronger, and she was doing so well with BBS and 0.2 with how fans felt she was really high up strong in the series. It reminded me why I was losing faith in the series around ReMIND time too, I didn’t feel any hype for KH4 due to it before the long wait, and I still am questionable on it now. My concern: With how mishandled the KH team made her look in 3, will it never get better for the character? Do you feel Nomura and KH team have now gave up on her as a proper protagonist after that? Do fans not want her to be strong anymore like they wished before with BBS and 0.2? The time spent on games she was in, and now it’s a concern if she will matter at all in the next games or have any cool moments or defeat villains to make up for last time. They needed to capitalize on it with 3, but did the opposite. You never know if you’ll ever get the chance again for characters in a story. She had as many games being playable as Riku, more than Roxas, but should have been treated better and properly. She was used for a lot of promotional material too.

It really felt like base KH3 should have been the one to make her look better and standout. Take down villains after being rescued, and showed out stronger and better. Even ReMIND, it felt like half-hearted damage control where you can play as Aqua to beat Terranort and Vanitas but scenes are not much different, and Guardians vs Replicas was thrown in for everyone but not a standout Aqua win moment. Techically she got 2 canon wins there, but also less people got into ReMIND after the disappointment of base KH3. She got happy endings but she should not be done after being used like that, and she does deserve proper moments to triumph like she should have gotten last time.

I wish we could go back and fix things for Aqua in 0.2/3. Now it’s been 6-7 years and I just wonder if damage is permanent or not in the series for her, and with how fans feel about her. She really did get a big popularity spike going in, and people did care about her a lot. She is probably still the most popular woman in the series, but she should have been a standout for women in the series everyone uses as the example instead of now fans feel Nomura and KH don’t write any of the women well and people point to that disappointment as the big argument.

Discussion Choose 6 Disney Worlds

Now with Coco as our first confirmed Disney world, let's assume we will get 6 more.

Which Worlds would you pick if you could choose? Not which are likely, but which YOU want.

Here's my list:

-Aladdin and the King of Thieves

-Treasure Planet

-Atlantis:The Lost Empire

-Princess and the Frog

-Toy Story (another orignal story again)

- Emperor's New Groove

(Yes I know these are very unlikely and yes I am an unc 😭)

Discussion Kairi and Namine confusion

So I’ve played all the KH titles, watched the videos for the mobile videos even. Yet I was thinking over things earlier today, and I came across a question that I don’t really know how to answer with my lore knowledge. Maybe I’m forgetting a part that explains it, but I figured I’d go to the fandom to answer my question.

So Namine is Kairi’s nobody. I know the process of how nobodies are created. When a heart gets stolen by the heartless, it becomes another heartless, then the actual body is transported to some other world and that husk becomes a nobody.

But Kairi’s body was never really lost. We see her lifeless form many times in KH1. Like I know her heart was residing in Sora so that’s why she never formed a heartless, but then where does Namine come into play? Cause Kairi’s body was right there to accept her heart after the Riku fight. I’m a long time kingdom hearts fan so I know some lore stuff is answered with very vague answers, but I’m just curious if I’m missing something.

How did Namine even form into a being is basically what I’m asking.

Discussion Are they any good?

Upvotes

This is my first post on Reddit so please correct me if I did something wrong. I recently bought the story so far collection of kingdom hearts because the trailer of 4 got me excited, i beat 1, enjoyed it, and then watched the cutscenes of COM because the gameplay didn’t seem fun. Im aware that KH2 is regarded highly in the series, what I was wondering was if past kh2 the games get worse and if besides the mainline games is the gameplay always different? For example do they all have gameplay like KH1 or is it more similar to COM. Sorry if I did something wrong I was just curious.

KH2 How did they make Kingdom Hearts 2 so fast?

From march 2002 KH1 to december 2005 KH2. Chain of Memories novembre 2004.

The graphics and story were exceptional. They are so long too and so well made.

I assume they recycled some parts and had fast decision and feedback take in of KH1.

The graphics are mind-blowing. I assume they did so by focusing on key dialogues to be animated. A lot were text boxes.

Was the team even bigger back then? I assume Nomura and many other could directly focus on it without many other projects.

Disney worlds are quite easy as they have a story they can hop in and they recycled them a bit by coming back.

However, the greatness is overshining and issues. It is such a good game. Impressive what they did.

We will see Sora getting a medal along with Han and Luke. This is such a KH type of scene, and going off of this alone, I am thinking Star Wars world will be based on episode 4.
