The issue is no champs. I still haven't played much due to none of my favorite champs from back in the day being in. They needed to hold off until they could actually get all the classic champs in. Then work on balancing, then work on longevity
Same. And by the time they add them, there’s 15 random patches that make the game different. And the game doesn’t even feel like season 3 anyway much tbh
funny thats what killed 2xko as well, almost like league needs to focus on actually putting the champs in the game is more important then setting up monitization
if you arent playing classic right now, you wont play classic for long even they put in your champ, thats the thing. Yes, some people are holding off because the champ isnt there, but I guarantee you that they will get bored aswell and quit, because the game itself is just shit.
That's exactly my issue with it as well. I'm still waiting for Udyr before I even bother trying to play Classic and trying to figure out if I want to play it more or not.
The issue is that classic or old league is just nowhere near as good as new league.
People remember the nostalgia of discovering the game and stomping noobs with whacky ass builds. That won’t happen when everyone is much much better at the game and you also have played the game for 10+ years
Classic is missing so many champions that I loved and a lot of the champions and items are in states that represent earlier versions than I remember and am nostalgic for because I started in season 2
Except tons of people are also arguing they shouldn't add in many of the missing champions because "they're too modern" like in threads about adding Riven and Zed and such people are like "no manaless modern dash slop champions" like my brother in Christ those were ICONIC champions of seasons 2&3...
Riven and Zed haven't changed, I don't give a fuck. Where are Yorick and Urgot and Galio and Irelia and Swain and Karma and Volibear and Aatrox? Why is there no fucking Graves, one of the champions mentioned in the reveal promotion?
I literally had started picking him up the patch before they announced the changes because I really liked the pirate-y skins that had just came out for him and TF. I was so pissed.
I was SOOOO hyped to play graves. Wasnt there… oh.. ill play trist - didnt remember how much her old kit sucked as ad and just had a miserable game lol. Played also couple games as support and didnt remember how bad it was also back then as support… I dont know what fucking Crack some people on this thread were smoking saying „its fun“ as classic support - lmao no. Its worse than eating flaming pinecones screw that.
Well, you were a support back then. Instead of just another carry jungler that doesn't need to farm. Specifically "back then" because League classic STILL has modern support for some fucking reason, even though it's the source of almost all lane issues.
The real problem is it isn’t even nostalgia bait. It feels like riot went out of the way to shoot it in the foot randomly on like 8 different aspects where it’s modernized randomly
So now it just feels like this dog shit modern league with ugly ass champs and very few characters (a large chunk of which are functionally very similar to modern)
Like oh boi wtf is the point of going to classic and playing lux. All her skills are functionally the same besides numbers. Then they prioritize adding more of this type of character?????
Also the entire rune grind was dog shit then and even lessened its dog shit now. They deleted it for a reason. Runes shoulda been free so people can try and play the game without feeling like ass cuz they haven’t played it for 20 hours first…
Also it's based on something that never existed. If they just chose a patch and said ok we are gonna do season 3 patch idk, 10, it would've been way better, more consistent.
I just have a theory with the amount of crap they have in the codes where certain champs or mechanic can no longer be applied. It’s like how the river is technically lower in z plane (yes league somehow is 3d plane) and cause skillshots to miss. But you can’t raise the river, because if you do, the water in the river will flood the entire.
Or idk, just the fact the fountain is one giant invisible insanely buffed sona.
For years coders just decided if it works it works, and went along as nothing gets broken. It’s just the same crap over again with classic, except people knew what the old bugs were
How can you have nostalgia for a mode that never existed?
They should have choosen a patch, any patch, and just brought it back the way it was, exactly, no more no less.
Then with time as ppl get bored they can iterate on it, but starting from day 1 with champions with mix matched kits, half the rooster missing, modern skins, vfx and VO, and modern systems was a horrible idea.
Its usually a 50/50 wether its a giant flop or success. And I dont know if theres any real way of knowing except trying. OSRS and classic wow are good examples of how the demand actually matched the actual players. I guess grindy rpgs appeal better and heros games do not? Or maybe its a fluke due to low sample size. You could look at retro games too, some games like SM64, NES tetris etc are insanely popular where others have died out. I think it might just be a mysterious formula, if classic/retros will actually be fun to go back to. But it really doesnt help when they fuck too much with the authenticity like riot did
Osrs was dying REAL FAST at the start cus the nostalgia factor very quickly dies out and people realize VERY quickly that wow indeed game made in 2007 sucks ass 20 years later for long term playing lol. Jagex started adding more stuff from rs2 and actually making Brand new content for osrs - thematically fitting for it, hence why its as popular as it is today.
The same could be done for league classic if riot added lets say all champs up till Yasuo or just before yas (or whatever champ we wanna decide), adds some new runes and masteries - that would be „balanced“ by the classic era standarts, somehow would balance all classic champs more or less to be playable against each other AND after all of that would start adding brand new champions only for classic which would somehow again feel more like classic league champs instead of just overtuned anime guy #6335 with million dashes and 3 kits build into 1.
That would be something lol. Idk if it would be succesful - if they advertise it literally as „classic qiyana“ with very tuned down kit etc. The people that like/main qiyana would they hate it or like it still?
its just not nostalgic for me, its the equivalent of animating a corpse of a long dead loved one and having it fortnite dance about. Its just a defilement
People do not remember how actually dogshit, unfair and unfun League used to be. People who say "It's the same now" are literally clueless lmfao. Thanks to people routinely abusing anything that's remotely abusable, a lot of unhealthy mechanics, builds and tech's been removed.
Yup, it was a time when people were figuring stuff out, with new mechanics and metals being found out constantly. It was fun, but it's been over for years and at the current stage of pretty much full knowledge about minmaxing in older versions makes it far less fun.
Nah I think a lot of us really enjoy it but we're just functioning adults with jobs and families. Kinda hard to find the time for it even though it's pretty close to what I'd be looking for if I did have time.
Is it dead? I find games in like <2 minutes which is about the same as regular league. I'm sure it's not super popular, but it doesn't seem dead to me.
I think FFXIV has more active subs at the moment, and OSRS is thriving as well. WoW feels less alive these days because everyone is split up across the modes. Each respective mode is middling compared to other MMOs.
they shouldve just done what warcraft did and released season 1 for a few months then season 2 and so on. maybe not start at season 1, but not whatever this mixture is
Yep. Fortnite does something similar with their nostalgia mode to great effect as well
At this point they're way past what I'd consider "og", but it's nostalgic to someone, so it means that they're getting the player engagement from absolutely anyone who played at any point in the past
the thing about fortnite is its just a br at the end of the day, league has stuff that greatly changes how the game works and some champs just arent in the game anymore. fortnite can get away with choosing 1 gun over another or bringing back chains of hades instead of the avatar bullshit
Nah it's just a fun game that I enjoy playing without feeling like I'm just playing street fighter in lane, if I want a complex game that takes its strategy seriously there's dota or chess
The only reasons Classic is flopping is because League has nothing to go back on. WoW and Runescape had multiple instances of drastic changes that fundamentally altered the game. League has never done that. It's been gradually iterated on while maintaining the same core. So Classic is just regular League but without the years of QoL and improvements. It's only advantage is nostalgia, which doesn't last more than a handful of games.
Also you don't "build" anything on League. The appeal of OSRS and WoW Classic is starting from the beginning instead of catching up to 28 expansions that add new systems and powercreep that even the most addicted players have trouble keeping up. LoL don't have that appeal because every match is self contained and the "core" farm, kill, destroy the nexus is absolutely the same.
The game has one fundamental difference and that's tempo/timing. Every classic game I'm in feels like such a slog. The only roles with any action are anything botside or jungle and even then it's meh.
This game could've been a texture pack and much better received than this product
Yeah while league has had big changes, I’d argue the majority are quality of life improvements. I know personally, I am NEVER touching classic because I don’t want to go back. I like that dragon is more than just gold. I like the changes to Barron buff. I like the jungle changes that allow jgers to gank more (jg/sup main so I’m biased). I like that support items feel impactful now. There’s more QoL changes that I like but it’s honestly too many to list.
I’ve been playing since S3, right when Jinx came out, and while I enjoyed old league back then, experiencing the improvements has made it impossible for me to go back.
it has been outright stated plenty of times that modern League is an action game while old League was more of a strategy game. And anyone who prefers the strategic side of the game is going to prefer Classic.
The real problem with Classic is that the matchmaking is dogshit, it is missing way too many champions, and again the matchmaking is dogshit. Putting first-time classic players into lobbies with people who have 100+ classic games, and then it resulting in a one-sided stomp almost every single game causes your fancy new mode to be dead on arrival.
I think another important distinction is WoW and runescape were pve games with storylines. It wasnt just nostalgia bait for old players new players had something to look forward to as well if they missed out on those expansions. Sure some remnant exists today but its nothing compared to experiencing the expansion on release with community and world changes happening in real time. League is pure pvp and the most popular one to boot so it will literally be impossible to capture a lot of the old novelty since a good handful of it relied on everyone still figuring out the game. Everyone wants to win so the fun experimentation gets beat out by people following meta. I used to play talon bot lane with my friend playing adc back then and we'd regularly crush, but with modern knowledge and tactics that'd rarely work into even an average adc support duo. The skill levels just went up far too much. And since theres not much of a storyline to experience first time for newer players, its a hard sell to convince them to keep playing beyond a few funny games with friends.
Playing Lee Sin in classic feels weird now because everyone can do the Insec. Its not impressive anymore, you're called bad if you fuck it up. Game is too sweaty for a nostalgia mode.
It’s absurd how much controversy Classic has generated, never seen another game mode get a reaction like this. If you don’t play it, why even take the time to think about it?
No "quick! Do the thing! Wave bounce! Back timer! Quick! Track your opponent's skills! Summs! Track enemy jungle! Rotate! Faster! Grubz! Herald! FAAAASTER!"
On top of that its piece of shit homeless supports meta
For real, I main support and I absolutely love the pacing. I don't want to feel like I'm playing BOP-IT!
Mobilty on champions especially being so far removed makes the gameplay feel so much better.
Also big reason why classic dies lol. The mode sucks ass. Hot take (on this sub): modern is million times better. Even with „more champs“ it would still suck ass. Just slightly less. Osrs was losing players FAST before jagex started adding new content it lmao. Classic league was doomed from the start.
Someday people will understand they don't literally yank away devs from regular league to work on other modes, there are specific teams that only work on modes. There are only so much devs that can work in a game at once.
Moved doesn't mean the spot they left wasn't replaced tho. Nowadays we have gamemodes AND TFT. TFT was just a gamemode (still is technically) back then so its literally resource allocation working as intended
That's too much for the average reddit user to process. Dudes truly believe they are yanking people away from one of the only games that make them money for the sake of side projects
In my experience with Shaco support (which I enjoy too), ADC players can be very unpredictable (plat mmr). Sometimes aggressive, sometimes not (I wish aggressive... better to die on one's feet, lol)
Personally, I just don't see the appeal of "League of Legends but its ugly and boring". I know this game mode wasn't made for me anyway, but I don't get why people would play this consistently, not just as a "game or two for old time's sake"
The appeal of league never was that it was pretty either. The current SR map was already barely up to standard graphics-wise when it was made more than a decade ago, and even if they increased them a few years ago, the system requirements for the game allow some of the worst PCs you could think of to run it. The game is just ugly everywhere to begin with, period.
It's not that people like the ugly look, it's just that the look of the game never even was part of the equation for a lot of people, until seemingly the recent-ish new player waves.
There's modern leagues slightly in need of an update graphics and there's 20 years old warcraft 3 style classic league style. The jump between them is beyond crazy and for how much the sentiment "Gameplay over graphics" is praised, it doesn't really work when both gameplay and graphics are insanely outdated as well as a way more pleasant and modern gameplay wise version of the game is freely available. Nostalgia only goes so far before reality kicks in.
well, i like the gameplay far more on classic then modern league.
modern league is spammed with to many dashes/movement and vision everywhere. And forced boring objective play (but... finding them boring comes maybe from a fact that im jungle main).
League classic is not perfect, but its better then modern league imo.
forced objectives is more like. You have to play for dragon all 6 mins or you lose.
in classic league you can play the game without being forced to play for dragon every few mins.
I feel that sentiment is only real because people have been playing League for centuries and are used to it.
Graphics already are insanely outdated in current League, to the point the old league crosses the threshold of those older visuals being appreciated solely because its retro (and not in a nostalgic way, but the way people appreciate graphics from the 90s and early 2000s nowadays)
The gameplay side, on the other hand, is a completely different discussion, because ''outdated'' only matters relative to the things around it. If everyone is under the same ''outdated'' gameplay, then that does not matter - meanwhile an outdated champ playing in current League will feel significantly worse because everything else around it is ''modern'' and that champion was power crept to oblivion. The rules of engagement are different, and some people prefer how they were beforehand; those are philosophical differences in the gameplay systems, not something that was worse and simply got better
Ofc, its mostly nostalgia bait. But a lot of people, enjoying the nostalgia bait, also noticed they simply prefer the balance philosophy of yesteryears
If they remove Classic i will stop playing again, thats just how it is. I cant be bothered to play live.
Im pretty damn happy with the gamemode and hope its gonna be around for a while.
I want to play, but my friends aren't really into LOL in general these days -- and I haven't felt felt the need/wanted to play a game on my own for many years, I'm too old to be competitive.
Still, from what I've seen, it's not bad -- although I wanted to play old Katarina, an instead we got one of her previous (but not oldest by far) versions... I guess it's hard to pinpoint an exact period when to set the game in that would make everyone happy.
I was hyped for it but I stopped playing classic because of the lack of match making, i got rng'ed with only real player inters on my team for over 15 games in a row, i am not a masochist so i quit. I heard others had bots in their games so i can see why it lost players, the other gamemodes would've also died if it was as bad as this.
Plus at the time i loved playing udyr, ww, aatrox, darius, morde and shen so yeah, only one of my champions are in classic, yay!
They claimed it was random matchmaking, but it was actually based on your soloq rank. For example, if you were Masters+ in soloq and queued into Classic for the very first time, it would first try to match you against other first timers (which is unlikely, because the playerbase at the top end is already so small) or it was going to match you against Gold-Plat+ Classic "rank" players (usually players with about 60+ games in the mode)
And with how punishing League used to be, it usually leads to the first-timer getting his ass beat by some bullshit he didn't know existed, and then falling further and further behind as he gets starved out of the game.
Don't even get me started on how fun this is for the other players in the game. They somehow took League's biggest problem (matchmaking deciding 90% of matches before they even start) and made it worse
i ended in emerald 4 before classic launched but i had less than 30 ranked games, in normals i mostly play with dia+. i admit that in some games i goofed, sometimes its part of the game but even in those games my teammates would match in deaths or die more. i clearly remember my last game i was 12/3 ww jungle, out of lanning phase 2 of my teammates had died more than 6 times each and the other 2 died like 8 times... they all had 0 kills and only 2 guys had 1 assist on me. we lost that game because i would get cc'ed into irrelevancy and then the rest would get insta rolled... I decided to take a break there but havent played since.
Calssic having low skill expression makes it so much worse when someone chain feeds on your team. The fed enemy can just point and click your entire team down.
this seems like the post of someone who played 2 games and has subsequently been hating on the gamemode the entire time.
league classic has been an absolute joy and i couldnt be any happier that we got it.
What I dislike about classic is that people will enter this mode then play the exact same champions as modern.
Wow bro, you're playing Ahri and Lux, champs that have barely changed for over a decade, must be so fun.
I can't blame them much though but it leads me to my other gripe with the mode. Why the fuck are a lot of characters that were around at the time not there? I was excited to play Fizz when he had an execute burn on W, and old Galio since I despise the rework, only to find out neither of them were included despite the fact they were a thing back then.
But hey, add Ahri, Lux and MF, champs that are basically the exact same? Come on.
Well ahri, lux and Mf where there in classic release-season3. And mf is slightly different.
Also when the champs are closer to the modern version, they propaly more easy to re-implement in league classic then champs that got reworked, and therefor must be (to some degree) newly coded and everything for league classic.
Because league classic runs on the modern engine and mechanics as far as i know.
many will get added.
The next that comes are Fiora, Galio, Poppy, Shyvana and Xin. I think in the next patch already.
And i know that urgot, morde, LeBlanc, Irelia, Cait, Graves are worked on.
Also i think they plan to bring at one point all champs up to season 3 in league of legends classic.
out of topic, but this game mode legit taught me more about farming and mana managing than 5 years of league. It's honestly crazy how OP abilities are today compared to back then, and how underslept on is AH.
stagnant objectiveless mid/late game, consistent of your support not buying wards, your team not having enough vision and enemy team camping bushes 24/7 for surprise one shots & gotcha pick-offs
took me a couple games to say "never again"
i'll take my vision creep and strategic gaming instead of this snowbally fiesta
cheers, player who has an account since october 2010 and has seen it all
Is classic actually dead already? I wouldn't be surprised. However I am surprised with how much advertisement and hype they put into it. Did nostalgia really blind some of these rioters to think it'd rival the other modes?
Played one game because I wanted the battle pass exp. Enemy picked tanks. I look at adc items. Fucking grevious wound and armor pene on separate items. Mundo proceed to swing his dick around, giving everyone cancer and been unstoppable.
I afk and take the penalty. No fucking thank you with this dogshit.
Not trying to defend the mode because there were some obvious issues at the start but its a mode thats getting consistent updates and getting more added to it. I think part of the excitement of it is people's nostalgia wasn't as strong as tbey thought it would be. They did showmatches and streamers did small tournaments of it but its never a game mode thays going to touch the popularity of the real game mode
It's missing my man Udyr and im not touching it till he gets added. I don't understand why ,since he was among the first champs in the game.I would even buy spirit guard. Giga Riot L
the fact i owned all runes/pages before they brought it back, then they want you to buy it all again via battle pass is the reason i haven't even touched classic
The problem is that you can't play the role you want or the champion you want because of the auto-fill and ban system. Why bring a fun game mode and ruin it by not being able to pick what I want to play?
I enjoy Classic. Quit modern league for roughly 2 years at this point and have no plans of ever playing it again unless rell's midscope gets entirely reverted or smth.
While trinkets and some other things put me off some, the only thing that really bugs me in league classic is the iteration of Jax that was included and the roster that's missing such a considerable amount of older kits. But considering the small team, the latter can be excused.
It's still fun. Much better than the wild rift lite that modern league is turning into.
And personally having the base gates is a good thing. Gaps being there was a thing that was talked about long before it was actually implemented, from what I recall. I would like the gromp-wraith removed, tho.
For menperosnally it is ssimplem I prefer classic over modern because both tempo of a game and ile itemization. But what ruined it for MEN, od not event a fact, that things are broker, but more that obły few things are handpicked, on top od that some championa missing. Like AP Yi being a thing, but ap Soraka already being shadow od herself. For some season we're getting beta version of TF, but Riven or Diana is a no no.
Also for me personally Twisted Treeline and Dominion we're biggest factor od league in that era and i have neither.
Do yeah, i'll pass, unless maybe they will nerf the broken but leave the tempo. Otherwise it just feels like cheap knock off
I love League Classic, the only reason I'm not playing it is because I dont wanna commit 40+ mins of games in a game mode(Summoners Rift) that I'm retired from. I'm just gonna stick to the retirement home(mayhem)
I think it would have make more sense to start at season 5, who in their right mind played during 1-3 seasons and stayed with league to this day? And its not like tf or 6 sunfire evelynn was that nostalgic to us, we never did that just heard of it same with ap yi now granted make this a permament gamemode is retarded
i mean, I was really excited and then i found out that they didnt even have the full original 40, they're refusing to add certain champs that were part of my formative years in league,
Like sorry but I came in around 2013, I want to play riven, irelia, hell even lucian
I was simply looking forward to league before keystone masteries and they gave me tailored "Only statchecks" league
If they actually released season 3 league it coulda been cool to play imo. Instead it’s a weird amalgamation of old and new such that it kinda half alienates everyone.
Classic is a weird mishmash of things tbh, it's supposed to be season 3 but theres items from before that, theres beta TF with the global TP and other stuff that, while minor, is odd, theres some champions that have an AA reset on abilities, while, for example, mundo's E doesn't anymore (and i vividly remember it was an AA reset back in like s4).
Also i could swear you could stack multiple of the same item's passive, like atmas.
90% of abilities being point and click makes the mode unenjoyable imo. The skill expression is "Know your damadge" and "Don't fail to know the enemies damadge". My favorite classic outplay is pressing B to scale instead of greeding for a wave. "Look at the cleanse look at the moves" Ryu face on the enemy kat
everyone coping that it's some how purely a "nostalgia = bad! you'll go back to modern league" is so incredibly stupid and misses the entire point.
we COULD have had a true league classic. we could've. but we can't and we won't because of riots laziness and greediness. the moment riot introduces battle passes to what is supposed to be a fun throwback is the moment the gamemode is dead in the water. if you see riot needing to slot in some sort of paid battlepass alongside a mod that's supposed to be fun and a throwback then you immediately know their goal is to capitalize, put in the least amount of effort and cash in. nothing more.
this overmonetization, the champion polls, the excuses for not having original VOs and skins ((by the way guys, trust us, we TOTALLY don't have a cache from that time!! it would take us just sooooo long to bring it all back!! please believe us!!)), the sloppy map that doesn't even look like it used to... it isn't league classic. this isn't what everyone had hoped for. nor that anyone with a working brain would hope for as this is riot we're talking about.
nostalgia being some sort of "bait" isn't what killed this mode. it could've been something real that brought back older players but the higherups decided that it wasn't worth the effort and that it should be a quick battlepass cashcow.
Dont see the appeal on playing League but ugly and with point and click everywhere.
Genuinely if i wanted to play something slower paced than League i would play Dota 2 and the only reason i could see for playing League classic would be playing a slower paced League outside of all of the nostalgia.
The real reason it doesn't work, and I'm sure riot knew this going in, quality of life.
Modern league is made with so much qol it's literally addicting, you can almost play with your brain off at this point, you never worry about mana, if you die you're instantly back in lane, your wards are free and given to you, it's next to impossible to execute in your own jg, timers (in theory) help everyone group at important moments.
Old league is like writing an essay without AI, or playing an old rpg with no save system. It's nostalgic which is great but the dopamine rush of a game of classic is just not there compared to how fast paced modern league is.
you league classic fans are dopamine riddled addicts. i go outside and stare at the grass growing for 7 hours every night, just like we used to as kids. far more fun and nostalgic
All I wanted was just Season 3, with all its bullshit, imbalance, and a mix of old and ugly, and new-ish and nice-er.
We got an all-over-the-place mix.
Kinda unfortunate this came to exist in the same timeline as Mayhem. Different kind of content and for a different audience, sure, but it's hard to compete with on pure fun factor.
Riot blew their load way too early imo. Idk if they needed return on investment immediately or what but the state it launched in was never gonna sustain players. Most of the champs aren’t there that people would actually want to play. The game mode simply cannot survive without a wide breath of old champs with varying gameplay experiences. Its possible it was just an attempt to get old players to download league again, and then when the hype for Classic dies they think “well I downloaded it, might as well see what modern league is like”. Either that or they get hooked on the virtual cocaine that is is ARAM Mayhem idk
League Classic has been the greatest marketing campaign and propaganda for Modern League.
Every single year since 2014 (when I started), I've liked League more than the year before. I love this game for what it is now and what it will be tomorrow.

The issue is no champs. I still haven't played much due to none of my favorite champs from back in the day being in. They needed to hold off until they could actually get all the classic champs in. Then work on balancing, then work on longevity
