My dad was also a farmer. Did combining all over the country. Was basically trafficked and fed meth by his own father to meet quotas. I've heard some fucking insane shit and people would 100% down vote a lot of it because "no fucking way that happens in America". It absolutely still does. Cousin is my age and ended up the same fucking way.
Edit: Dad was 8 when he started working the traveling combining operation, whatever the fuck you'd call that.

That, too. We don’t pay a “real” price because “free” labor obvi costs more than “slave” labor. But the companies with the contracts get to pocket everything they would have spent on salaries, benefits, insurance—everything labor related... Oh, and they pocket the ag subsidies, too. That was the plan. Bankrupt farmers so that BigAg and private equity companies could come in and buy the land for as cheap possible. Then get waivers from the government for “their” immigrant workers because hey, “food shortage/price crisis”. Then do nothing to actually bring down prices because these high prices have become “normalized”. Ultimately, reap the profits for the executives and shareholders.

Two of the biggest mistakes we made,
- We did not properly punish the South and we should have put a stop to that revisionist history bullshit their kids and grandkids started.
- 80 years later Operation Paperclip put anywhere between 1200-2000 Nazis and their families in the Deep South.
That was a mix that was going to mesh like Velcro.
And the powers that be, on BOTH sides were perfectly happy to sit back, stack the deck and take advantage.

In my state, 4% of farmland is used to grow crops for direct human consumption. The rest is animal feed or ethanol. Fuck them.

13th amendment allows for the use of prisoners to be used for labor without compensation. So there’s the slavery loophole. Arrest and incarcerate and voila you have a slave population. So private prisons can charge for labor and charge for the cost of keeping them in prison. Double cash cow. Then of course fund republicans to keep the money flowing. I grew up in rural Nebraska where my family owned and operated a grain elevator.
Exactly what black people were these people expecting to work on these farms? I literally have never seen a black person where I grew up. The first black person I ever saw in person was at boot camp when I joined the Marines.

I may be making the wrong assumptions cuz I know nothing about farming or managing crops, but last year I noticed a lot of stuff seemingly not harvested and left to rot, and many of the farms that have been around since well before I lived in the area (the early 80's) have been sold to deveopers after pulling down their Trump signs.

Reminds me when I first was in Idaho while I was in the Navy. Yes, there was a navy base outside of Idaho Falls.
Anyway, after serving eight years in the Navy aboard two different ships, then settling in Southern California for a few years, I decided to return to Idaho. I liked the beautiful scenery and all the outdoor activities. While I was there I turned out to be quite the skier and fly fisherman.
After settling in Idaho I begin to notice a couple of changes from the first time I lived there. The first being the agricultural fields were much larger than I remembered. Just guessing I would say they were 5 times to 10 times larger. The second change I noticed was a large Mexican community there now. This didn’t bother me, I understand that demographics and cities change and that the only constant in life IS change.
But I was curious. So one night at a bar, I asked one of them what was he doing so far away from Mexico? I mean Idaho gets really cold it must be really different from where they came from. He said they lay the irrigation pipes for the potato fields.
Oh I thought. That must explain why farming has expanded so much. The next question I asked him was who laid the irrigation piping before you guys came up here? He looked at his friends, and they all started to chuckle. Then he said, nobody did.
I continued to work in Idaho for about another five years before I realised I really wasn’t cut out for the harsh winters. So in the late 1990s I returned back to California.
This was all before Trump and while I lived there seemed like everybody got along just fine . I’m wondering now if that has changed.

I vaguely remember about a decade ago there were reports that rural ag businesses (not just large farms or ranches but also meatpackers) were skirting requirements that they try hiring locally first by placing wanted ads in obscure publications, being obtuse about the work or requirements, using intentionally bad contact information or just running them in Spanish, then shrugging helplessly when no one showed up and *resorting* to the guest worker program. The part people are missing is this. If a person grows up as a farmer, field worker, rancher they are willing to do the work it takes to be a farmer field worker, rancher, etc. If you made those people work in a factory they would go crazy. In China lots of farmers went to the city to get much better paying jobs in factories. Their suicide rates were off the charts. Some factories literally put nets below the windows to keep people from killing themselves. It is the same going the other way. People who grew up in cities just aren't going to do the physical labor that farms require. It was naive to think that would happen.

Never happened. Farmers and meatpackers lobbied this admin, after which the DHS de-prioritized the industry. But only if they self- policed. The farmers helped workers get H-2A and H-2B visas. Temporary Protected Status, and to use E-Verify. In the end, they lost 1.38% of their workforce. Plus, It's been known for decades, Americans rarely apply for these jobs. Black or white.
