Logan Square everything thread!

inspired by u/flippingsenton, and now automated:

Talk about the goings-on in the neighborhood that you don't feel like making a new post about. Debate the merits of [over/under]rated taco place. Where's the best coffee? What shows are going on this week? Make friends! Just be kind and courteous.

Don't complain on Reddit about Mucho Gusto - call 911

Reached out to our alterman this weekend about the ridiculous noise coming from Mucho Gusto. City statute states it can't be louder than a "normal conversation" 100ft from the building - we all know it's not.

They said to call 911 whenever they play their music too loud in order to, and I quote, "create a record of calls for service which will help [them] advocate for enforcement."

If you care about the noise coming from that restaurant, call 911 when they're breaking the law.

A business complaint has officially been filed, and an inspection has been requested.

Follow-up to previous post:

My previous post was taken down, and after reading the discussion that followed, I wanted to clarify what I was actually trying to say.

I’m not saying homelessness, noise, fireworks, or other legitimate issues shouldn’t be addressed. Of course they should. I’m saying there are better ways to address those problems than posting photos of someone feeding birds or treating the existence of unhoused people in public as some kind of neighborhood crisis.

What strikes me as ironic is watching people move into Logan Square, pay a shitload of money to tear down two- and three-flats and reshape the neighborhood around themselves, and then complain that the neighborhood doesn’t behave the way they want it to.

You can’t say you love Logan Square because it’s urban, eclectic, diverse, lively, and full of character—and then get angry about the people and behavior that come with that.

I’m not arguing that we shouldn’t improve the neighborhood. I’m asking whether there’s a difference between actually improving a neighborhood or trying to remake the part of the city you CHOSE to live in around your own preferences. Constantly posting photos of people who are down and out as public nuisances doesn’t help.

You paid to live here but didn’t buy the neighborhood.

Rescued a Tennessee Warbler

Witnessed a bird fall to the sidewalk outside my work. Scooped it up gently, and called the Chicago Bird Collision Monitors. He seemed lively, but unable to fly. Ended up delivering it to a volunteer. Washed hands thoroughly after I got it cozy in a transportable vessel. He was so cute!!!!

For info on what to do when you find a bird that may be in need of assistance:

$1,000 — Basement room in shared apartment, own bath (Logan Square)

Thumbnail gallery

Room for rent in our apartment. Two of us live here and we're looking for a third. The room is downstairs in the finished basement, so you get a lot more space and privacy than a normal roommate setup, but this is a roommate situation, not a separate unit. The kitchen is upstairs and shared with all of us.

  • Bedroom downstairs, plus a large living room/den right next to it that's yours to use
  • Your own full bath down there with a walk in tiled shower
  • Back entrance through the laundry room, so you can come and go without walking through the house
  • Shared living room on the first floor by the main entrance
  • Kitchen upstairs, shared
  • A dedicated parking spot, plus easy street parking
  • Shared laundry
  • Closet storage

About us: two of us live upstairs. One works days, one bartends, so we're on opposite schedules and the place is usually pretty quiet. One cat is fine, no dogs.

Landlord is looking for someone with 700+ credit who makes at least 2.5x the monthly rent before taxes, or has a cosigner who does.

Local cafes hiring?

Long story short, I have always wanted to be a barista. I know everyone wants to be a barista and similar to serving it’s kind of hard to get into because it requires a specific skillset. I’m not really sure how to get experience if no one will hire and train me though… I’ve only ever gotten a response from one Starbucks despite applying to like 30 different locations, and it was a prescreening interview that I still haven’t heard back from.

Any advice?

Bass sound near the square

A few nights/mornings recently there’s been a low, steady, bass sound near the monument - like someone is blasting music far away. Anyone know what it is? It’s subtle but loud enough to keep me from sleeping.

I went looking for it this morning around 5:30AM and narrowed down the area a bit- it wasn’t audible south of Kedzie and Fullerton, and I think the western extent of it is somewhere around Kimball and Diversey. I also went into the Blue Line station since I’ve seen some posts about a basement party that’s sometimes audible there, but I didn’t notice anything unusual.

My current best guess is the generator (?) outside of Logandale Elementary school- when I walked by it did seem to be generating a fair amount of noise, at low frequencies too. If that’s it, it’s traveling quite far, I wonder if it’s gotten worse recently or I just didn’t notice it before.

Any other info/tips appreciated! Also, tips for sleeping through loud sounds appreciated too ;-; thanks!

How are people actually making friends around Logan/Avondale?

Hey neighbors! I live right around the Logan Square/Avondale border and I’m looking for more ways to meet people locally and build a little more community in the neighborhood.

I’m pretty open-minded about what that looks like — sports leagues, running groups, workout classes, food/cooking-related stuff, sewing, art classes, Spanish classes, volunteering, or really anything social where people actually get to know each other.

Would love recommendations for groups, classes, clubs, recurring events, or other places where you’ve had luck meeting people around Logan/Avondale!

General Topic - Thursday, September 3rd at 7:30 at Avondale Bowl

Post image

Sure you have played Trivia before, but have you played Trivia at a bowling alley? If you have, it could not have been as fun or cool as what pen & Paper Trivia and Avondale Bowl put together the First Thursday of the month (9/3) at 7:30!

It is always free to play, you can bring your own food, and of course there will be prizes for our top two teams! There is always a variety of topics so it is best to bring a variety of your smartest friends while our host Sam and amazing bartenders make sure that everyone is having a good time.

If you are wondering about our other date Avondale Bowl in September… we are going to be asking about the many films of Judd Apatow on WEDNESDAY, September 16th at 7:30!

As always $2 of every frozen White Russian sold will go to our charity of the month imagination library to honor of the passing of the legendary artist and philanthropist and 10% of all P&P merch sales will go to this wonderful cause as well!

We hope you can make it to our event!

Dance Music in Logan Blue Line Station?

Post image
82 Upvotes

New to the area, but every weekend morning I’ve walked past this “door” in the station, there’s loud dance music coming from behind it. Is there a bar with a basement right there that just goes hard all night into the morning? Or is this some secret underground society I’m stumbling upon.

Bucktown next door has a pretty good arts fest going on.

Holstein Park today and tomorrow. It’s not like most street fests with all the same vendors. Definitely art focused with just one beer vendor and some food trucks. Two music stages. One for bands and the other at Bucktown house showing high school jazz bands.

Promise I don’t work for the org. Just love when I see an arts fest that art focused and not alibaba focused.

Mucho Gusto - Why So Loud?

The newish bar / restaurant / club(?) Mucho Gusto on Milwaukee - I think it was previously Old Plank.

How are they getting away with playing music so loud? Walked by at 1am last night and they had whistles, a DJ yelling into a microphone, club music blaring, people on the sidewalk, all with the doors and windows wide open.

Did they get some sort of exception vs the other Chicago bars that need to bring people inside and cut the outside music at 10pm?

My elderly aunt lives close by and says she can’t sleep at night because of the bass.

What can I do to get them to follow the rules? Alderman? I doubt CPD would come if I called.
