MSOE is a terrible place. The entire establishment is built to make your life as miserable as possible. Every single day there is constant challenges. You wake up, and drink coffee that tastes like cigarettes. Go to class a few blocks down. It snows and it's dark in the winter. Sidewalks usually aren't paved right away. Then you have to got to the science building. The building is built out of an old parking garage so the levels are strange. There is a basement below the basement with plenty of cockroaches to keep you company. With two second floors and classroom numbers picked by a monkey throwing pieces of shit at a hopscotch court and blind man seeing the number it lands on, the science building is hard to get around. The dorms aren't great either. You either end up getting lucky and get one with air conditioning or you get the slums. I had to bring my own light to the shower once because the only light in the dingy stall with a wrapped curtain was burnt out. The classes themselves are abusive. Your teacher that you can barely understand will grade your homework like you slept with his wife. And on top of it all they just keep raising the cost of tuition.

All that being said, for just the right person MSOE is amazing. I truly love this place and the people here are some of the best and brightest I have ever met. Suffering together makes you better friends.

Does anyone currently living in MLH mind sharing what the bathroom situation is actually like? A few things I’m trying to get a feel for:

Are the showers private stalls, or a more open setup?

Do most people walk over already in a robe/towel, or get dressed/changed in the bathroom after showering?

How often are they cleaned, and are they kept up decently?

Anything you wish you’d known or brought before move-in?

I am an incoming freshman to MSOE and I will be in the CS program. I see that there are a fair amount of math classes that are part of the curriculum and I am assuming that I will need some sort of graphing calculator. Does anyone know if I will need anything more than just a regular ti84?;

I’m currently a Computer Science major and I’ll be a junior in Fall 2026. I’m honestly feeling pretty conflicted about whether CS is still the right path for me.
I hate admitting this, but my overall performance as a CS student has been below average. At the same time, the thing I genuinely enjoy most is making games. I like learning programming through game projects, building small mechanics, and seeing something interactive come together. My long-term goal would be to work at a company that makes games, or at least do work related to game development.
The problem is that I’m not sure if staying in CS is the best way to get there. Some of the CS classes I’ve taken helped me learn the basics, but a lot of it has felt outdated or disconnected from what I actually want to do. I’m also worried about the job market, especially with AI changing the tech industry so much. It makes me question whether continuing in CS is a smart decision for me, especially when I’m already struggling in the major.
I’m not trying to avoid hard work. I know every major and every career path has difficult parts. I just want to make a realistic decision before I go too far in the wrong direction. Should I stay in CS, push through, finish the degree, and try to build a game development portfolio on the side? Or should I seriously consider switching majors if my main interest is game development?
I’d really appreciate advice from other MSOE students, especially anyone in CS, software engineering, computer engineering, or anyone who has switched majors before. What would you do in my position? What should I be thinking about before making this decision?

My parents live in Waukesha and I will be going to msoe this fall. I won't have a dorm (too late) so I will have to cover my living expenses out of pocket. Should I live at home and commute to class every day or should I rent an apartment near campus? I will be in chemical engineering and I want to know if commuting is doable or do I need to live on campus?

I’m going to matc and majoring in electronic engineer technology and I’ll have to take a few other math classes before I can even do my transfer classes for msoe but hearing that the workload and grading is tough I’m worried that I might just not pass though I also might want to go because the classes I have to take to transfer to uwm isn’t relevant to my major

Also is msoe expensive? Considering the connections I can make and recommendations from professors it should be easy to find a job after school and but i’m only getting by through college by financial aid rn.

Why I Think Engineering Undergrads Might Underrate Schools Like MSOE

One thing I’ve started realizing while researching engineering colleges is how underrated smaller engineering-focused universities can sometimes be for undergrad.

A lot of applicants (especially internationals) seem to focus almost entirely on rankings/prestige, but schools like MSOE appear to offer things that may matter a lot for engineering students in practice:

• smaller class sizes,
• accessible professors,
• hands-on engineering culture,
• strong industry focus,
• internship/co-op opportunities,
• direct mentorship,
• practical engineering exposure.

Especially with current growth in:

• semiconductors,
• embedded systems,
• robotics,
• AI infrastructure,
• advanced manufacturing,

practical engineering experience feels increasingly important.

The U.S. semiconductor/manufacturing push after the CHIPS Act also makes me wonder whether industry-connected engineering schools could become even more valuable over the next decade.

I also think many undergrads underestimate how important it can be when:

• professors actually know you personally,
• undergrads can join labs/projects early,
• research opportunities are accessible,
• faculty mentorship is direct,
• and students aren’t just one person among hundreds in giant lecture-driven systems.

I’ve also noticed that some professors at smaller engineering schools have backgrounds from places like:

• MIT,
• Stanford,
• CMU,
• Berkeley,
• Georgia Tech,

while still being significantly more accessible to undergraduates.

As a prospective Indian student currently considering MSOE, I’m genuinely curious how current students/alumni feel about this in practice.

Especially regarding:

• professor accessibility,
• internship/co-op outcomes,
• semiconductor/embedded opportunities,
• undergraduate research,
• career placement,
• industry reputation,
• and long-term ROI.

I’d also honestly appreciate perspectives regarding the financial side.

For an international student receiving a significant scholarship (for example ~$34k/year+) but still depending mostly on loans, how realistic is MSOE financially in practice?

Do students generally feel the engineering outcomes, internships, and career opportunities justify the cost/debt compared to larger public universities?

Would especially appreciate perspectives from current students, alumni, and prospective Indian students considering MSOE.

So I'm finishing up my bachelor's at UofL this year and plan to move up to Milwaukee and starting my career up there. At UofL a lot of the professors don't seem to have a ton of care. They make your grade 80-95% exams and quizzes, and then sometimes post homework solutions if they are on the better side. They also seem okay with most of the class barely passing. Multiple professors have said they expect a 60 exam average on a 10 point scale.

And I just wanted to know if this is how MSOE feels? I was thinking of doing my masters at MSOE, but I want to join a program where I can pick the classes I'm actually invested in. Rather than in UofL where most people are picking classes on the professor more than the class content.

Hello, I just wanted to make a thread for MSOE ABSN students that will be starting in the Fall of 2026. I hope this can be a way of communicating and helping each other with anything related to our program. I look forward to starting school this year!

Does MSOE have a roommate matching/finding group to meet people of common interests? My daughter went to a much larger college that had a FB group to chat with other students. Is there something similar? TIA!

Maybe this is a crazy ask, does anyone know the brand or type of cottage cheese that was in CC during the fall of 2023?

I transfered after that semester and then I heard they change providers for the food service(?), idk if that means ingredients change too?? I dont know, but I've thought about that cottage cheese at least 1 week, if not more, since I left that school.

I (19M) am a student currently in my second semeter at MSOE

Basically this is going to sounds like a sad sack or heavy post so if you want to take it like that fine but please hear me out

• I'm NOT going to mention names or anything at all because I don't want to get anybody in trouble, but one, there are some fairly unfriendly people here (students mostly, i haven't run into any bad profs yet), I am male and do dress feminine sometimes so maybe that's why but I'd hope not. Like even asking the wrong person a simple question will get you laughed at
• My entire floor ostracises me and basically nobody likes me. I have a feeling someone is like spreading rumors about me, the bad kind, but of what I do not know. I have never once said or did anything remotely inflammatory, and i don't hold those kinds of beliefs anyways so idk
• I don't really understand it, in the beginning of summer i was on good terms with like almost all my floor, now basically only a few people are friendly to me, one person i was friends with won't even talk to me anymore, and when i tried i got basically crickets and one word responses. I am struggling to find out what i did wrong, and on that I suppose Reddit wont be of much help. Like i said, not at all to be narcissistic, but I am a really open minded person and always try to nice to people, even if they're mean to me

So can anybody provide any insight on to how your social life here at MSOE is going, Like I said I'm not seeking sympathy or a magic solution at all with this post I really just wanted to share my experience. Oh, also if anybody recognises me from real life with this post, pls pls pls just don't dox me or mock me, i have enough things im dealing with right now and i dont need more... Be a kind person, it takes so much less energy :)

Lastly, any tips on how to improve social life, I know it comes naturally to some people but as someone with diagnosed anxiety and autism type-1 it does not. So I would appreciate advice, one last thing if this post comes off to complainy (i hope not) or is inappropriate for this sub, pls feel free to tell me and ill delete it
