Weekly Classifieds and Events

Welcome to our weekly odds and ends post!

If you are looking for events, please check out our exhaustive Events Calendar!

Every parent level comment should begin with one of the following categories:

[For Sale] concert tickets, beauty and grooming services, Ikea bookcases

[For Free] dental checkups and couches that you can totally have for free but you have to move them yourself

[Want to Buy] * Rave tickets, a used toaster, a cute puppy*

[Job Request] You're new to the city and are looking for work in IT or you hate your job and need some leads. Be sure to include your skills and qualifications. A lot of people on this sub love to help others but they can't do that if they don't know your background and interests.

[Job Announcement] You're looking for new team members for a fantastic job that ISN'T a scammy ca$h4work gig or MLM

[Living Arrangements] You need a roommate, an apartment, or are offering a living arrangement. Be sure to clarify your tidiness expectations because you never know what you're going to get when accepting a roommate and I'm NOT GOING TO DO YOUR DAMN DISHES ANYMORE REBECCA

[Personals] You're lonely, new to the city, want to play extreme Frisbee, or need someone to eat Ian's Pizza with because no one wants to do that alone. We understand.

[Event] An advertisement for your amazing upcoming event - like a urban foraging excursion or band performance that is totally going to blow the roof off

UPDATE: More of Milwaukee’s National Warehouse Corp. building collapsed overnight following yesterday’s initial wall failure. The difference in less than 24 hours is dramatic. The city has issued an emergency raze order for the unsafe structure near S. Water and E. Bruce streets. 📷 Aaron Johnson

HOO BOY! Is this why MPS is closed tomorrow?

Post image
Upvotes

My Fox6 weather app must be drunk, or we're all gonna die at noon tomorrow. 🥵🫠

Edit: I know it's going to be absurdly hot tomorrow and many MPS schools don't have AC which is why they are closed. I was trying to make a joke about the app showing the wrong projected temperature and tie it into something MKE related, and MPS closing seemed like the logical choice.

Lincoln Avenue Elementary students back to class

It's the first day of school in Milwaukee! Gov. Tony Evers was on hand to welcome Lincoln Avenue Elementary students back to class at their new home at Pulaski High School in Milwaukee.

Lincoln Avenue Elementary was destroyed in an overnight fire this summer. The elementary students will be attending the high school with dedicated classrooms on the first and third floors.

The first week back to school in Milwaukee is going to be a hot one. Temperatures are forecast to reach 90 degrees this week and most MPS buildings don't have central air conditioning.

School canceled tomorrow due to heat. WILL THE CITY/STATE ACTUALLY INVEST IN THE GODDAMN SCHOOLS AND PUT AC IN THEM, FOR CHRIST'S SAKE?!

MPS question (Closures heat)

Does anyone know when they shut down schools for excessive heat (totally not asking cause I work in building with no ac and it’s 90+). I know they closed over the summer, but I didn’t know the specific temperature that warrants closure.

(It is now cancelled, there is a higher power thank god)

The Oriental Theater on Milwaukee’s east side is the only cinema in the city (and one of less than 20 in the entire country) that can show film year-round.

Soda kegs

My friend is having a house warming party on Saturday and I've always wanted to get a keg but I don't drink so I planned on getting a keg of sprecher root beer from total wine but they don't have any within a 60 mile radius meaning I'd have to go far so my question is does anyone know a place that sells kegs of soda or am I just going to have to take the loss on this one?

Edit: I went to the HQ and they helped me get one ordered! Much appreciated guys

Hey yall, we found an orphaned baby possum in our backyard. He's super cute but not a pet, so, are there resources locally who would take his cute Lil face in?

UPDATE Stanley has been deposited safely and sound with the wildlife rehab center at the humane society. He was apparently pretty emaciated but has a good chance of recovery!

Help Me! Ideas For Brookfield Square?

I love walking around this mall when it’s too hot or too cold to be outside, and every time I’m here I wonder what else this space could become. It’s clearly not thriving as a traditional mall anymore, but there’s SO much space and potential!

What would you turn it into? Anyone have ideas for cool ways this space could be repurposed? 👀

A piece of Milwaukee’s industrial past came crashing down today. A large section of the old National Warehouse Corp. building near S. Water and E. Bruce streets partially collapsed around midday. The Milwaukee Fire Department responded, and officials said no injuries were reported. The affected warehouse section was vacant, while people in an adjoining portion of the building were evacuated as a precaution. Built around 1910 for the American Malting Co., the massive Cream City brick structure has stood along the Milwaukee River for more than a century. These aerial views show the extent of today’s collapse—and a building whose future now appears very uncertain. 📷 Aaron Johnson

I wrote this month’s Sunday Sauce for Milwaukee Record about Sorella in Bay View, a cat-sitting favor that turned into dinner, and one seriously great pork chop. Figured this crowd might appreciate some Milwaukee Italian food talk.

Community Bulletin Boards / Ad Space

Upvotes

Hi all! Looking to do more physical advertising for an established summer writing camp for teens based in Milwaukee and would love to put flyers up on local community boards to get the word out.

We already have some grocers (Pan Asia, Sendik's, Rupena's, etc.), the Public Market, and coffee shops we know have boards (like Colectivo) on our list -- what are we missing? Any boards that always capture your attention while you're out and about?

TIA!

Can anyone recommend a good custard therapist?

I’m slowly coming to terms with the fact that Kopp’s won’t be bringing tiramisu back, and I’m in a bad place right now.

And that place is planet Earth, wholly devoid of Kopp’s tiramisu custard.

The pain is unspeakable. No Wisconsinite can be expected to go on under these conditions. I personally don’t understand why people aren’t talking about how the existence of Kopp’s maple syrup and pancake custard (🤢), combined with the absence of tiramisu, proves God doesn’t exist.

Dark times.

FOUND HER!!!!!!! She’s now safe at home.

Lost cat , Lucy. She escaped some time this afternoon. Last seen on S 15th Street & Holt. Collar is not on, she is micro chipped but info is not up to date, it has her previous owner who is in Texas.
Answers to Lucy Lou or Squeaker. We’re looking at MADDAC and the humane society as well.

HOO BOY! Third Ward scammer claiming daughter is in hospital

Twice in the last few months, a woman approached me claiming that she "is not from around here" and has a sick daughter who was rushed to the hospital. Last time, it was Columbia St Mary's and this time, it's St Luke's. She'll claim to need x amount for an Uber. This time, she was kind of looking at the cars on Water Street before she stopped me and gave her story.

She has missing teeth and was dressed a bit inappropriately for the weather. Both times, she stopped me on Water Street near Chicago.

The first time I was a bit skeptical but polite. It wasn't until like 10 mins later, I was like, 'waitaminute, who is making medical decisions on her child's behalf if she is not there and not from the area...?'

I figured I would post in case she tries to dupe more people.
