Total beginner gifted a Janome Memory Craft 350E

Over the weekend I was gifted a Janome Memory Craft 350E along with a kit that includes a ton of embroidery supplies and notions. I am SO excited but genuinely have no idea what i’m doing. I have already read through a fair bit of the manual so I think I will start there and do a few test projects just to get a feel of the machine. Otherwise I have no idea where to begin. If anyone has any recommendations on online classes, books, or any social media creators who make good teaching content please send them my way! I am so excited to learn

So I’m new and need the experts help!

Hello, this is my first time trying to embroider a shirt. I have been practicing on cotton fabric. For some reason this doesn’t look right to me. I feel like you can see the holes on the sides of the letters and some of the thread spacing doesn’t seem consistent. I purchased a font from a reputable seller on Etsy. I also chose the size font in Embrilliance and did not modify it. I also have not touched the machine (new) tension settings. I know this community is full of experienced folks! I will take all the advice I can get.

My machine, a Dahao A15, came with this enormous frame. Is it just a big frame, or does it have some special purpose?

Patch help

1st pic is my patch and 2nd is what it should look like.

I am trying to embroider some more shirts for a family member since I have all of the supplies to do so. I used inkstitch to digitize the design, but I need help fixing some aspects.

Do I need to change everything except for the red part to a satin stitch? I think it had a fill stitch for everything. Also, do I need to increase the density for the red part? I don’t know how to do either of these things, so if someone could point me in the right direction that would be amazing!

Lastly, if I change the font size (and type of stitch) for the wording above the main patch, will that fix the problem?

P.s. I know I used the worst scrap fabric to see this on. I’m sorry!

Is something wrong?

Hello everyone, I’m working on a project for a coworker and I was running a test run and I feel like my machine is acting weird but I’m not sure because I’m new to this. It’s their jacket that is a fleece material. I’m using a 4x4 hoop so any advice on how to improve the lettering so it’s not lost in the material is appreciated.

Items used:
Fleece from Amazon
40wt thread I think new brothread
Cut away stabilizer
Water soluble stabilizer on top
90wt prewound bobbin
90/14 needle (gold tip came with my machine)
Machine is brother se700
I have embrillance software

My machine wasn’t cutting the last time I used it and I think I fixed it because it cut this time. But any advice is appreciated.Thank you!

Ho to tell if a software is good?

Hey guys

I'm pretty new to machine embroidery and have not yet made a software purchase. I use ink stitch but I'm not super happy with it. It's a bit clunky and keeps crashing on my computer. So I was thinking about making a purchase but obviously the non free embroidery software is really expensive and it's hard to decide where to put that much money. Recently I got ads for a new embroidery software (I won't name it cause the way I'm reading the subreddits rules).

That software is so incredibly cheaper than the others that o the one hand I'd much rather our base this over any of the established ones but on the flipside it makes me really really skeptical as to why. We're talking cheaper than a Nintendo game, one time purchase.

And I realized I don't know how to tell if embroidery software is good before purchase. The legacy ones simply have fans to read about but obviously the newly released one doesn't yet and I looked at their online presence and didn't get much further than "yep. It digitizes something!"

Tldr: do you have some pointers what to look for in digitizing software and what might be red flags?

Thanks!

Creativate and digitizing

Hi there, I'm trying to digitize some artwork to go on a vest and I'm struggling to digitize with the Silver level "Express Design." If I upgraded would I be able to choose the stitches and make sure the colors are what I need them to be? If that makes sense... I tried to do ink/stitch, but it's very confusing for someone who is not very tech savvy.

Espree Baby Lock

I recently acquired an old Espree Baby Lock EM2 Embroidery machine.

Does anyone know where to get the appropriate notions and accessories - hoops, compatible pattern SD card, etc?

It’s an older discontinued machine, so there aren’t a lot of resources online. This is all new to me, so I don’t really know where to begin.

Any advice, resources, or links would be greatly appreciated <3

What information does an embroidery digitizer need from a client?

Hi everyone,

I’m researching the embroidery digitizing workflow because I’m building a software tool that aims to automate parts of the digitizing process. I’d like to understand the real-world workflow from experienced digitizers.

If a client sends you an image/logo and asks you to digitize it, what information do you need from them before you can start?

For example:

- Final size (width/height)

- Fabric/material

- Garment/product type (shirt, cap, jacket, bag, etc.)

- Embroidery placement

- Garment color

- Thread colors/brand

- Required file format (DST, PES, JEF, etc.)

- Whether the artwork can be modified for better embroidery

- Any specific stitch, density, underlay, or production requirements

I'm also particularly interested in:

  1. What information do clients commonly forget to provide?

  2. How does the fabric/product change your digitizing decisions?

  3. What decisions do you make as a digitizer that cannot be reliably determined from the artwork alone?

  4. What does your typical client → digitizer workflow look like from receiving the artwork to delivering the final embroidery file?

I'd really appreciate answers from professional/experienced digitizers. I'm trying to understand the actual workflow before making design decisions for the software.

My First Project

When my sister was pregnant with her first she asked if I was able to make something like this, and back then I told her I wasn't confident in machine embroidery. I just had a sewing machine. I now have a brother SE1900.

I just pulled an all nighter and tried to be brave enough to give it a shot and surprise her before my sister has her second baby (this week or next!) she likes her crewnecks oversized so that's why I spaced it out so much. I still need to clean up some of the threads but I was excited to share!

I know there's obvious tension issues, which I tried to fix and failed. Any advice would be welcome as I have plenty of wonderful friends having babies this year! I used a cut away stabilizer and a paper water solvy which was definitely wrong but I figured this would be a practice piece if it didn't work out.

Thank you!

Glide machine embroidery thread twisting and breaking

I’ve been using Glide machine embroidery thread for free motion embroidery and cannot get it to stop twisting, which leads to breakage. Even just winding the bobbin, it twists. I have the cone wrapped in a mesh cover, which was supposed to help prevent twisting.

Does anyone else have this problem? What fixed the issue?

Question!

Hello! I am new to this Reddit and happy to be here! I currently have a single needle brother se700 and I wanted opinions on the best multi-needle machine to start my small business. I’ve been doing research but all of the different opinions and options are making my head spin!

What I’m looking for in a machine:

\- well rounded- ability to make sweatshirts, hats, pretty much anything

\- the larger the hoop capability the better

The real important thing for me is the bobbin arm, as the flatbed of the SE700 makes it almost impossible to embroider sleeves, hats, etc.

Questions- Is it possible to stay within the 3-4K budget? I can totally understand that I’ll have to sacrifice some things for the other, but I’m desperate for some guidance! What were your first machines, what did you like about them? What didn’t you like? Would you buy them again if you could go back?

Thank you in advance for all your help!

My first hand digitized lettering!

I usually just use the free satin fonts on inkscape but I wanted to decorate my breastmilk storage bag (I probably should have done it as a glue on patch instead of embroidering through the insulation 😬) and I'm really happy with how it turned out! I accidentally snipped some of the stitches while cutting the jump stitches but I still really like it! I think I'll make a few patches and do a giveaway in my due date group

Advice on using verigated thread

Thumbnail gallery
7 Upvotes

Im trying to find the best way to design a fill pattern that will mimic the pattern of a tortoise shell cat. I currently use the Brother PE Design 11, and I'm open to learning some other free softwares.

The program has several fill patterns, I think the wave ones would work best for fur, and my best idea so far is to split the fill into choppy sections manually.

Has anyone done this before or have any tips?

Thanks!

Designs I manually digitized and stitched out today. If theres a duplicate its because I needed to make adjustments to the original design for my own sanity.

Which is your favorite?

Tear away stabilizer to order?

Is there a decent type/ brand of tear away that I can get in somewhat larger amounts online somewhere, in order to save a bit and stock up for a while? Amazon is fine, but am barely past beginner and want to be sure I get something that someone has tried and seems usable enough. I am embroidering tea towels / kitchen towels, also little ornaments for gifts. And a specific pot holder pattern that calls for tear away.

Thanks! Any advice is welcome.

What to put between the front of the shirt and the embroidery

Hello,

Is there some sort of tear away thing that I can put on the front of the shirt when embroidering so that the shirt doesn't show through under the embroidery? Can I use tear away stabilizer in the front?

Embroidery for a wizard/wand maker

Making a shirt for a friend of mine who'll be performing as a wizard/wand maker at a local festival. I've sewn ruffly stuff for him before, but I wanted this one to be really special so I'm doing some embroidery. White linen shirt, puffy sleeves, band collar. He has no idea what's coming unless he reads this subreddit, which I'm pretty sure he doesn't.

Funny. When I bought the machine (a Dahao 15, Tajima knockoff) the salesman tried to talk me out of it because it didn't come with training. Don't worry, Ed: I think I've got it worked out.

Inkscape/Inkstitch for the win.

Tension Suddenly Wrong Mid-project?

I was in the middle of making a patch when the bobbin thread started pulling up to the right side of the work. I had already made 3 patches today on the same material with the same settings just fine, it just randomly started behaving differently in the middle making of my 4th patch. To me, it looked like a too tight upper tension but I hadn’t adjusted the tension. I’m still a bit new to this so I’m not sure what happened.

I’m trying to adjust tension to fix it but now instead of having my upper thread show evenly around the edge on the wrong side of my work, it’s off center. One side of it looks right while the other side has the bobbin thread all the way to the edge and occasionally visible on top. I’m trying to find information on what that means but haven’t found it yet. Can anyone explain what happened and how to fix it?
