My bet is that it is a lie and the owner took it away...I do not trust the narrative that they have protrayed. I hope I am wrong though, because that is mean

Yeah, cats don't see these toys as their babies. They put it in their food bowl because of their instinct to cache food - they see them as prey. Toys satisfy predatory, not maternal, instincts. I doubt he was depressed without it. And these toys cost like 50 cents, just get a pack of 20 or so, you're going to lose them.

I was skeptical of the "to feed his baby" part, and came to the comments to see if anyone had a real explanation for the behavior.

Yeah my cat had a favourite blue mouse for a few months. It disappeared suddenly and weeks later I found it and several other toy mice at the bottom of the toaster when something smelled off.

Motherfucker was cooking them for later.

That's also why they put them in water - they drown their prey sometimes. You see them pushing the toys down underwater and waiting for it to drown before putting it in the food bowl to simulate eating it.

It's not their baby it's their prey lol.

My cat used to do this with my hair ties. If I was looking for one, I would find one on her water bowl. Then I got annoyed she took all my favourite ones, so I bought a pack just for her to play with - she didn't care about those at all. When I ran out, I just started to wear those and suddenly, back in the water bowl.

I guess so too , but also makes me wonder why she wanted prey that smelled of me lol
