Discussion Who Are Superior Iron Man and Anti-Polar Magneto? The Insane AXIS Story Behind the New Season

Post image
395 Upvotes

With Superior Iron Man and Anti-Polar Magneto coming to Marvel Snap, I thought it would be worth explaining where these versions actually come from.

And the first thing that might surprise a lot of people:

Superior Iron Man is NOT Tony Stark from another universe.

He is the original Earth-616 Tony Stark.

And for a while, he was basically one of the most dangerous versions of Iron Man Marvel has ever created.

It all starts with Avengers & X-Men: AXIS, the 2014 Marvel event.

First, we need to talk about Red Onslaught

After Charles Xavier's death, the Red Skull stole parts of Xavier's brain and began using his telepathic powers.

Eventually, Magneto confronts him.

For Erik, this was extremely personal. Magneto is a Holocaust survivor, and now he was standing face-to-face with a Nazi using the powers of his former best friend to persecute mutants.

So Magneto kills Red Skull.

Which turns out to be one of the worst possible decisions.

Because Red Skull's death unleashes something much worse:

Red Onslaught.

A combination of Red Skull, Xavier's psychic power, and the entity known as Onslaught.

The result is a threat so powerful that the Avengers and X-Men can barely deal with it.

And this is where Magneto has a surprisingly good idea.

The Sentinels being used by Red Onslaught were specifically designed to counter the world's greatest heroes.

So...

Why not bring in the villains?

Magneto gathers people like Carnage, Doctor Doom, Loki, Sabretooth, Mystique, Hobgoblin, Deadpool, Enchantress, and others.

Basically:

The villains create an opening for Scarlet Witch and Doctor Doom to perform a spell intended to invert Red Onslaught's personality.

There is just one problem.

The spell affects everyone in the area.

And that is where AXIS gets completely insane.

Heroes have their morality inverted and start acting like villains.

Villains have their morality inverted and start acting like heroes.

SUPERIOR IRON MAN

Tony Stark was one of the people affected.

But there is an important detail here:

The inversion does not turn Tony into some completely different random person.

It basically removes the moral restraints from traits that were already part of his personality.

Ego.

Narcissism.

Need for control.

Addiction.

A superiority complex.

Almost unlimited confidence in his own intelligence.

Imagine Tony Stark thinking:

“I really am the smartest person in the room. So why should anyone else get to decide what I can or can't do?”

That is Superior Iron Man.

And when the heroes eventually cast another spell to reverse the inversion...

Tony deliberately protects himself from it.

Everyone else is supposed to return to normal.

Tony decides he likes being this way.

So he stays inverted.

Extremis 3.0: when Tony turns an entire city into customers

Tony moves to San Francisco and releases an upgraded version of Extremis called Extremis 3.0.

Through an app, people can essentially become “perfect” versions of themselves.

More attractive.

Healthier.

Physically enhanced.

Tony initially gives it away for free.

The city becomes addicted to it.

Then Tony reveals the second part of the plan:

$99.99 PER DAY.

Want to stay perfect?

Pay.

Can't afford it?

Go back to the way you were.

San Francisco literally starts splitting between people who can afford to remain “superior” and people who cannot.

And that might be the scariest part of Superior Iron Man.

He is not trying to conquer Earth with an army of robots.

He simply turns self-esteem, health, and physical perfection into a subscription service.

And remember:

This storyline was written in 2014–2015.

Superior Iron Man's armor is also completely ridiculous

This era also gave us the famous silver/white armor:

Model 50, the Endo-Sym Armor.

And no, it is not just normal Iron Man armor painted white.

Tony incorporated technology derived from symbiote biology into its design.

It is made from a type of liquid smart metal, and Tony initially controls it through a psychic connection.

He can summon it and manipulate it almost as if it were part of his body.

The armor can “feel” Tony, and Tony can feel the armor.

It is not literally Venom living inside an Iron Man suit, there is no independent personality like a traditional symbiote, but the technology is heavily inspired by symbiotes.

That is why it looks like some bizarre combination of:

Iron Man + symbiote + liquid metal.

And visually, it is still one of the best-looking Iron Man armors ever made.

Superior Iron Man vs. Daredevil

One of the best parts of the story involves Matt Murdock.

Daredevil realizes what Extremis is doing to San Francisco and tries to stop Tony.

And Tony does something particularly cruel:

He temporarily restores Matt's eyesight.

After years of blindness, Matt can see again.

But it is not a gift.

Tony is demonstrating that he now has the power to control something incredibly personal to Matt.

When Matt continues trying to stop him, Tony eventually removes the effect and interferes with his memories.

The conflict really shows how terrifying Tony Stark can become when all of his intelligence remains intact but his moral limits disappear.

Tony Stark vs. Tony Stark

And this is where the story gets even better.

Years earlier, Tony had secretly created an emergency protocol:

A digital copy of his own mind.

Basically, an AI based on the pre-inversion Tony Stark.

Pepper Potts realizes that the real Tony is completely out of control and activates this artificial intelligence.

So we basically get:

Heroic Tony Stark vs. Evil Tony Stark.

The AI knows Tony because it literally is Tony.

It knows how he thinks.

It knows his insecurities.

It knows his technology.

And it tries to find a way to restore the original Tony.

But Superior Tony also knows exactly how Tony Stark thinks.

Because...

Well...

He is Tony Stark too.

Superior Tony eventually manages to destroy the digital version of himself.

So who actually defeats Superior Iron Man?

In a way:

Pepper Potts.

Pepper realizes she probably cannot beat him technologically.

So she attacks the thing Superior Tony values most:

His public image.

She purchases a massive media company and threatens to expose exactly what Tony has been doing with Extremis.

Her message to Tony is basically:

You can keep trying to create your perfect world.

But now everyone will know exactly who you really are.

You can continue.

You will just continue alone.

Superior Iron Man ends with Tony still morally inverted.

The series reached issue #9 shortly before Secret Wars, and Marvel never clearly showed the exact process that restored Tony to his traditional personality afterward.

It is one of the stranger unresolved transitions from that era.

SO WHAT ABOUT ANTI-POLAR MAGNETO?

There is one important thing to understand if you first encountered this character through Marvel Snap:

“Anti-Polar Magneto” does not appear to be an actual codename Magneto used in the comics.

Marvel Snap seems to be giving a distinct name to the inverted Magneto from AXIS.

And interestingly, Magneto's inversion works very differently from Tony's.

Tony was a hero whose moral restraints disappeared.

Magneto already existed in a complicated space between villain, revolutionary, terrorist, and antihero.

So inverting Magneto means forcing him to reconsider one of the beliefs that defined his entire life:

What if Charles Xavier was right?

After the inversion, Magneto begins to experience something close to a moral awakening.

He starts acknowledging that his methods, his brutality, and his refusal to accept Xavier's arguments pushed away people he cared about.

For once, he begins seeing real value in Charles' dream of coexistence.

And there is a great irony to this.

Just as Magneto starts thinking...

“Maybe Charles was right.”

A representation of Xavier effectively suggests the opposite:

“Maybe YOU were right.”

Two men spent decades arguing over their philosophies.

And only after magical inversion do they finally begin to understand each other's point of view.

Magneto and the “Astonishing Avengers”

After the inversion, the world is basically upside down.

The Avengers and several X-Men are behaving like villains.

Meanwhile, former villains suddenly possess heroic instincts.

So Steve Rogers does something he probably never expected to do:

He recruits villains to save the world from the heroes.

This leads to a group commonly referred to as the Astonishing Avengers, made up of several villains Magneto had previously gathered.

It might be the best representation of AXIS as a concept:

The Avengers are now the threat, and the villains have to save the world from them.

AXIS also changed Magneto's family forever

During the event, Marvel drops one of the most controversial revelations in modern continuity.

Scarlet Witch is also inverted and ends up fighting Magneto and Quicksilver.

Wanda casts a spell designed to affect her own bloodline.

Quicksilver is affected.

Magneto...

is not.

And Wanda realizes why:

Magneto is not biologically her father.

For decades, readers had believed Magneto was the biological father of Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver.

AXIS is the storyline where Marvel officially changes that.

Later stories go even further and reveal that Wanda and Pietro are not naturally born mutants either.

Whether people liked the retcon or not, AXIS permanently changed a major part of Marvel continuity.

So, to summarize:

Superior Iron Man is the original Tony Stark with his morality inverted.

Not a clone.

Not a variant.

Not an alternate universe.

It is Tony Stark without enough of a conscience to restrain his own ego and intelligence.

And he liked being that way so much that he deliberately prevented the spell that would have restored his personality from working on him.

Meanwhile, Anti-Polar Magneto represents the opposite side of the same idea:

A Magneto forced by the inversion to abandon some of the extremism that defined his life and acknowledge that Xavier's dream might actually have value.

A hero becomes one of the most dangerous men on Earth.

A villain begins to understand why people spent so long calling him a villain.

And that is basically the premise of:

AXIS: INVERSION

One final detail about the Marvel Snap cards

I also really like how their abilities seem to play with these inverted versions.

Superior Iron Man gets increasingly amplified benefits, almost as if anything that makes Tony stronger has to make him even more “superior.”

Meanwhile, Anti-Polar Magneto, instead of doing what regular Magneto does in Snap, moving enemy cards, puts cards from your own hand into the other locations.

Regular Magneto manipulates the opponent's board.

Inverted Magneto mobilizes his own allies.

I have no idea if that was the exact intention behind the design, but thematically it works surprisingly well.

As per tradition with SD and not bug testing cards before release, another card has broken the game. Don't play him as you'll get stuck in a reconnecting loop.

Didn't buy a single one of these cards. I received them all via daily draft PMV and reward tracks.

This past month has been by far, the best time to be a marvel snap player in terms of the amount of rewards you get!

Fractured Outpost, my beloved.

More game boards were on SD's roadmap a while ago, here's hoping they add more. It was so cool to not have the default game board for at least one season. I would even spend gold for game boards!

Striking while the iron is room temperature, I know.
I have been trying to get better at animating in Blender and learning Unity also. Had the idea to make that Thanos revolver when I saw the new card at the start of the season.
It could look a hell of a lot better. I ran into a multitude of issues trying to figure out how to properly texture things for the first time, as well as the crystal shots themselves being animated poorly but, I'm done fiddling with it.
Next up I want to try to make Death Fractured Frontiers Rifle.
I am using FPS Engine for Unity, which allows damn near plug and play with weapon view model animations.

Doubles cost reductions + doubles power increases on a 5/7 body is scary in any buff package. Anti Polar Magneto is solid multi lane value. Red Onslaught is pure high roll chaos.
I don’t think it fully breaks the current meta, but it definitely changes it. Were you guys putting Ironman compared with Thanos?

Discussion TIL: You should check if the opponent's Red Onslaught rolled Mobius before playing your Sera

Upvotes

Did not occur to me that my Sera would do nothing when I played it on Turn 5 because I don't think Mobius has any animation that he does for Red Onslaught to copy. Well, lesson learned I guess. You have to actually click that thing and verify if MMM is there before doing Sera.
