Berrien County Sheriff's Office (BCSO) deputies said they rescued a 7-year-old boy from South Bend, Ind., who went missing in the water while swimming at Silver Beach County Park Monday before 9 p.m., but despite efforts to save his life at the hospital, he died later Monday night.

First responders and the U.S. Coast Guard responded to the initial call and found him near shore at 10:08 p.m., about an hour after he went missing. Deputies said he died at the hospital Monday at 11:15 p.m.

As a forty-year old man living in the suburbs of a Midwestern city, it is now required that I begin caring about my lawn and purchase a porch goose for my wife to dress up (I know, big yikes, but who are we to fight the arrow of time?). I am on the board for the non-profit Michigan Association of Railroad Passengers, and with approval from the moderators of the sub, I wanted to reach out to you all and see if who would be interested in taking a leadership role to expand passenger rail in Michigan.

January 6er running in Michigan house race

Using my homemade water wagon to irrigate one of my freshly planted food plots. We’ve had some nice rain these last few days but we all know the weather here is a crapshoot, and id rather have this and not need it, than the other way around!

I did my hunter safety class and have been using OnX and DNR maps, but I’m still trying to figure out actually finding a spot.

For HAP land, can I bring a small ground blind/pop-up or do I need permission from the landowner first?

For public land like Ortonville, how do you know you’re not setting up too close to another hunter? Do you just look for vehicles/lights and have backup spots ready?

Also, what are you guys looking for on OnX when picking places to scout? And how far from parking/trails would you recommend going?

Not looking for anyone’s spots, just trying to learn and do it the right way my first year.

I’ll start out by saying I’m not exactly a ‘Murica fuck yeah red white and blue American. I’m thankful for my parents bringing me here, but I’ve found that today’s political climate doesn’t make it easy to be THAT guy.
However, I’m a staunch Michigander. I didn’t realize I was until I started dating a girl from Tampa Florida and she and her family would shit in Michigan (it’s cold, Detroit is ghetto, you call those beaches). I would defend Michigan as if I was going to war!
We’ve been married since last year and she lives here. It’s growing on her minimally but not the same as her love for Florida.
I’ll be moving to Florida to be closer to her family this September and I’m already starting to miss this state.
My question is, is it possible to have more pride to be a Michigander than it is to be an American.

My dad is 62 years old and his blood type is O+. His kidneys failed due to IgA nephropathy which is an autoimmune disorder. His kidney function declined as the years passed and he was on the verge to be on dialysis. My mom applied to be a live kidney donor to him and she ended up being a match, which was truly a blessing. They did the transplant surgery and everything went well for about 10 months, but there were some complications thereafter. There is something called BK virus that can occur and infiltrate the transplanted kidney, which it happened in his case. The BK virus abruptly took over the kidney and caused a large amount of scarring, which ended up causing the kidney function to decline. My dad is now at end stage renal disease (ESRD), which he is getting dialysis now three times a week. My mom is so discouraged as she thought donating her kidney would give him a few good years at least, but sadly the outcome was not what we had hoped for. We were told to apply to be on the waitlist for a kidney donation, but this could take years. Unfortunately I have come to the point where I feel helpless and asking for help to the community.

He has been trying to stay encouraged and positive with this new lifestyle on dialysis. He is trying his best to stay strong and positive in front of his family, but I know deep down he is feeling like he can’t catch a break. He is a father to 3 and a grandfather to 1. He has worked at a restaurant his whole life, but had to let go of that business due to his health. He is compliant with all aspects of his health treatments and regimens so I know he would take wonderful care of a donated kidney, as he did with my mom’s kidney.

On September 4th at 3pm Central Time, we will resume Animikiiwadiswan (Thunderbird Nest) on Ottawa National Forest land right next to the proposed mine site. We will camp just west of the North Country Trail parking lot, 20 minutes north of Wakefield, MI, on County Road 519. Members of all Tribal Nations are invited. Non-Tribal people are welcome to join in solidarity.

No drugs or alcohol permitted. Pack in, pack out: leave no trace behind. This is a remote area, so bring food and water, as well as lighting, dishware, and a camp chair. Be self-sufficient. Parking is limited, so carpooling is encouraged. Children are welcome!

Hey everyone

​I’m looking for recommendations on progressive, non-faith-forward businesses (or independent makers) to buy holiday ornaments and decor from instead of Bronner’s.

​I’ve only ever been an occasional customer there, but their new holiday catalog that probably hit your mailbox today really rubbed me the wrong way. For a business that leans so hard into faith and patriotism, they don't seem to care much about buying American. Even the patriotic ornaments on the cover aren't all made here, and on pages 3 and 4 (the pages featuring the America 250 collection) out of all those featured items, only three are actually made in the USA. Customer service confirmed the rest are from places like Hungary and China. For a product line celebrating America's 250th, it feels like a punch in the face to American workers that they wouldn't prioritize or highlight domestic manufacturing.

​On top of that, their catalog doesn't really reflect what modern families actually look like. As part of a family with two dads, I want to support progressive companies that actively embrace and celebrate all family types rather than spending my money there.

​Does anyone have favorite shops, online stores, or independent makers (bonus points if they're local to Michigan or U.S.-based) that offer great holiday decor and genuinely inclusive representation?

I love midwest US food. It’s criminally underrated (although Detroit-style pizza’s finally gotten the recognition it deserves). Michigan has the coneys, Illinois has the Italian beef, Wisconsin has the curds, Minnesota has the Jucy Lucy, and Ohio — yeah, OHIO — has the oft-insulted Cincinnati chili. Which, I’ll be honest, I love. Leave me alone. But, it’s no Detroit-style coney sauce … lemme be clear with that.

Can't really find much about policy just "Common sense approach to lower costs"

Birthday getaway, stayed below the bridge night 1 stayed in the porcupines for a couple nights then spent the last few days at the tip top in Copper Harbor. The weather was beautiful the entire time.

Thinking ahead for Winter, I’d really like to invest in a great, cozy coat that will last for the next handful of years. Open to anything that’s reasonable and no particular style. I’m hoping for something obviously warm, but very cozy is a plus. Us Michiganders deserve to not only be warm but cozy as well! 🙂
