Somewhere out there, deep in the underground, and sometimes even just above the surface of the musical mainstream, lie entire styles of music that are easy to listen to and played by excellent bands. Yet, the popularity of such genres is approaching zero. At best, there might have been a five-year period of intense hype, and then everyone forgot all about this music for the ages.

Overall, a solid album. Not enough to make it into my top 25, but still a very enjoyable listen. Going in I didn't really have many expectations as I don't listen to very much Guns N' Roses. But I was pleasantly surprised by this album. None of the songs for me were 10/10's. I'd say the closest to 10 would be an 8.5

The music production and sound quality as a whole was very good. It definitely sounds like Guns N' Roses (from the songs I have heard). The instrumentation was amazing and my favourite part of many of the songs were the electric guitar solos. Unfortunately, I've never been a massive fan of Axl Rose's voice, so that for me was probably the weakest aspect of the album.

The two tracks that mainly stood out to me were Live and Let Die, and November Rain. Live and Let Die is a very unpopular choice for favourite song in this album, but I really loved the vibe, and it's just a bop. November Rain is decently long, but was able to hold my interest and focus throughout.

I think most of the things in this album worked. From the instrumentals to the lyrics and songwriting decisions, but again, the weakest part of the album for me is Axl Rose's voice. There's just something about it I don't especially love and never really have.

All in all, a great album. I probably wouldn't listen to it all again, but I've definitely saved a few songs from it to my pla(y)list.

I recently found a video of Thom Yorke & Johnny Greenwood performing one of their Radiohead songs (Numbers) acoustically with a CR78 drum machine, and was really enthralled with it.

Was curious if there are other videos out there of artists performing their material in a similar manner?

I am NOT a music specialist or those guys who fall in love with 8min of pink floyd guitar solo, i just fucking love this song and every paragraph of it.

Miley Cyrus arguably went too far with The Dead Petz and Something Beautiful, at least commercially. Those albums were largely forgotten by the mainstream. You could make a similar case for Katy Perry’s Witness, Lady Gaga’s Artpop, Madonna’s American Life, Camila Cabello’s C,XOXO, and now Ariana Grande’s Petal.

At the same time, there are plenty of examples of artists who took big creative risks and still landed massive successes: Miley herself with Plastic Hearts, Madonna with Ray of Light, Taylor Swift with Folklore, and Beyoncé with Renaissance.

This isn’t about whether those albums deserved more recognition. It’s about figuring out why some experiments work and others don’t. Is it just about quality? Or is there a tipping point, a limit to how much an artist can reinvent themselves before they start losing the fanbase they’ve already built?

There’s this narrative that music was ‘better’ in previous decades, and I think we need to interrogate what’s really happening when we make that argument. Every generation has done this dismissed the current era as derivative while canonizing their formative years. But what strikes me is how we apply completely different standards. A ‘90s alt-rock band with three-chord songs gets called ‘authentic’; a Gen Z pop artist doing something structurally similar gets called ‘lazy’ or ‘manufactured. I think a lot of this comes down to gatekeeping masquerading as taste. We’re nostalgic for the feeling of discovering music at a certain age that sense of rebellion, novelty, community and we mistake that feeling for actual musical quality. Modern artists are innovating at the same rate and with more accessibility than ever; we’re just not giving them the same cultural permission to be ‘important.’ Are we actually critiquing the music, or are we critiquing our own relationship to how we consume it? Also theirs a lot of artist who are not mainstream or super popular that are amaaaaaaaziiiiiinnnnng

does anyone even want to start a band anymore. like a serious, a compose and write songs arduously, rehearse intentionally, and go-to-the-top - like the beatles - band. any conversation you have with the industry boils down to posting - and that's sad. but i still believe great music and great aesthetic can be brought to life - a band that has large mainstream aspirations, wants to build on organic community and pure skill - can still do it - only their fingers will likely be sorer from typing and posting. we might all spend fewer hours playing guitar and putting hard practice in - the beatles played 8 hours a night in Hamburg for a year before taking off. are there still people out there who value that grind? in new york, growth and opportunity still feels tangible from the bar conversation, the indie venue show, the subway chat. a band may still farm their fanbase online in stealth while developing their true creative output. the internet rewards repetition of the resonant jingle, i'd hope in our lifetime we reconvene on the art of writing real songs and making records.
