Earlier today, I put together Strength of Victory ratings for each team. SoV is the average win percentage of each of the teams you've beaten; beating better teams will give you a higher SoV etc. This is a useful number when comparing teams at similar levels of match points as it gives a sense of which teams are getting points against good opponents and which are beating up on weaklings (sorry Stars). Overall, this metric is useful but limited since game outcomes are not binary and do not capture the full game outcome (e.g. a 5-2 win counting the same as a 1-0). In the below table, I've included SoV, SoD, and SoL numbers for each team.

I also took a stab at creating a combined Strength of Performance metric. In short, this replaces the win percentage factor in SoV/D/L with a combined factor of (points per match * goal differential normalized to be out of 100 [again, sorry Stars]). This is intended to give a more accurate view of how strong each team is. I then used the new SoV/D/(1-L, which means you get hurt less by losing to good opponents), combined it with the team's record, and applied a factor of 3 for wins, 1 for draws, and -1 for losses. This number gives a sense of how each team has stood up to their schedule. I've also normalized this number to make it easier to compare teams as part of an overall scale.

Playoff order if this was all that mattered: Gotham, Wave, Spirit, Thorns, Current, Royals, Courage, Reign. This was a fun little project and I'm happy to admit that there are issues with it. This was meant to give a sense of how strong each team FEELS and is not a projection. I would love to hear other people's thoughts or how they'd weight different parts.

So Riley Tiernan spent the first half of last season looking like an essential part of the attack. With the new coach coming in, she continued to start at first but really had minimal presence. This season she’s only had one goal. For those who watch LA more consistently than me, what are your thoughts on her? It seems her playing style doesn’t go along with the coaching style and no AT also dampened her style. Do you think she leaves in the offseason, and if so, to where?
