FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — The New York Jets are under construction.

That’s true in a literal sense. Renovations at the team’s facility are currently underway to upgrade the team’s weight room, one year after Jets owner Woody Johnson invested in locker room upgrades.

It’s also true in the figurative sense. Head coach Aaron Glenn has taken on some renovations of his own. He fired half his coaching staff, took over play-calling on defense and worked with general manager Darren Mougey to add veterans and leaders on both sides of the ball that were missing during last season’s 3-14 finish.Expectations for this year’s Jets team are low outside of Florham Park. The players know it. Glenn can feel it too. Across the NFL on Sunday, rosters were trimmed from 90 to 53 players. The majority of the players who practiced Monday will be the ones who determine if the Jets can overcome the overwhelming noise that people view them as one of the worst teams in the NFL. It’s an uphill battle many coaches before Glenn have tried to overcome.

Would you go after him for the jets? I don’t see why not. I’d love to see him take a bunch of snaps this season and see what he’s got

And we didn't even put in a claim. Like why does this brain trust feel so confident, knowing we went 3-14 last year. Our QB situation is egregious.

Traded by the Steelers with a 4th for a 3rd and 6th round pick, before being cut outright yesterday.

I remember so many of you whining and bitching about how we were outmaneuvered by the Pats and Bill B on draft day Wah Wah Wah.

Maybe it’s (yet another) chance for so many of this fan base to self reflect and stop the knee jerk whining and negativity?

But I won’t bet on it.

Smith was the best case study as to how Mougey and Glenn would approach players they recently drafted. Ex-GM Joe Douglas often hung onto players beyond the point when they deserved to stick around. That’s not to say Smith (a fourth-round pick last year) is entirely in the same bucket — he contributes on special teams, crucial for a fifth receiver — but he has not taken the necessary steps forward as a wide receiver and still has issues with drops, a problem that plagued him in college. Ultimately, the Jets didn’t have any other receivers that seriously pushed him for a spot.

Patrick also didn’t make a huge impact this summer but the Jets value his leadership and ability as a blocker.

Sadiq seemed to be making progress in his return from injury lately — it will be interesting to see if he’s ready for Week 1 (and, if he is, whether the Jets activate him that day considering how much time he’s missed). The Jets had big plans for Sadiq coming into the summer, but he missed too much time; offensive coordinator Frank Reich admitted they’ll have to throttle back on those plans a bit. Regardless, this is the best the tight ends room has looked in a long time. Taylor looks ready to take a leap in his second year, Ruckert had his best camp in a Jets uniform and Woods played his way onto the roster with an impressive summer. The Jets might legitimately give snaps to all four of these players (not at the same time, presumably).
