🚨 THIS PATTERN MUST BE INVESTIGATED. There appears to be a deeply troubling pattern at this shelter involving large-breed dogs being given as little as 1–8 days to find rescue or adoption before facing euthanasia. That is not a genuine chance at life.

🚨 There are also serious concerns that some dogs may be quickly labeled “aggressive” or “sick,” potentially accelerating their placement on the euthanasia list before they have a fair opportunity to be saved.

Sweet Michael arrived at the shelter with lacerations to his head and neck. His right hind knee was severely swollen and has an open, draining wound. A third-party veterinarian evaluated him and reported a guarded prognosis; amputation may ultimately be necessary.

Despite everything he is going through, Michael remains bright, alert, and responsive. He is willingly eating and drinking, and his swelling has decreased. But he needs more than a shelter kennel to recover.

Michael needs a safe, quiet home where he can be closely monitored, receive the care he needs, and have the best possible chance at healing.

He has already endured enough. Please don't let his injuries be the reason he loses his life.

It’s the LAST CALL for (8-y/o) Rufferee, now under kill command!

The adorable American Staffordshire Terrier-mix was found in a park and brought into NYCACC in late-June.

He is listed due to high stress and toy-fixation behaviors in the shelter environment (details listed below).

Rufferee is social, cute, affectionate, excitable, energetic, and healthy!

The good boy earned the 2nd best behavior rating during his medical exam… 🦴

Shelter Notes:

Rufferee is listed on the at-risk emergency list due to behavior concerns that arise from high stress and over-arousal inside the shelter environment.

While he is noted to be highly social, energetic, and affectionate with handlers during outdoor yard time, the confined space and noise of the facility have caused him severe anxiety.

The specific incidents and behavioral triggers that led to his at-risk status include:

Low Arousal Threshold: In the care center, he becomes easily overwhelmed. During one incident where he became highly over-excited trying to get into a toy storage bin, medical staff stepped in to check on and redirect him; he responded by lunging at their hand in an attempt to resource-guard.

Toy Fixation & Resource Guarding: Rufferee has an intense obsession with toys (like stuffies and tennis balls). He exhibits resource guarding behaviors in the shelter, including freezing, becoming tense, hovering over, and body-blocking his toys. This fixation also makes him very difficult to redirect on walks if he spots random toys.

Severe Shelter Anxiety: His official logs note that he shows clear physical signs of terror and confusion inside the building, such as trembling like a leaf. In one documented instance, he pulled himself into the supply area, tried to climb into a linen bin to hide, and then suffered an anxiety-induced collapse onto the floor out of sheer mental exhaustion and confusion.

✨️Behavior Summary: Marty displayed calm, neutral behavior throughout the yard, with soft eyes, a relaxed body, open pant, and neutral tail. When another dog attempted to initiate a fight, Marty appropriately disengaged and walked away. He peacefully coexisted with the other dogs without engaging in play.

With the handler, Marty was friendly and affectionate, approaching to solicit petting and leaning against the handler. He tolerated full-body handling, though he briefly tensed and side-eyed when his abdomen and legs were touched, indicating handling sensitivity in those areas. He quickly returned to the handler and solicited affection again.

8/29: BAR, did not allowed to be pet or touched pulls on leash as well.

8/30: Immediately showed teeth when approached, snapped and lunged at gate when I reached my hand near.

8/31: When approaching kennel pet was QAR laying on floor, I knelt and slowly came closer to kennel, he maintained eye contact but didn’t move or show aggression. I offered him a treat through the door and he accepted and returned for more, he took them gently through the kennel bars. He even caught a few I tossed at him. He remained stiff in posture during our encounter and watched me closely. Kennel was clean so he might be house trained.

8/29: Cobi is a 5-year-old, neutered dog who has lived with his current family for five years after being obtained from a family friend. The owner is surrendering him due to behavioral concerns, including resource guarding and aggressive behavior toward the owner’s wife and child. He has attempted to bite them but has no reported bite history. The owner reports that Cobi is primarily comfortable with him and does not enjoy being around other people. Cobi is described as playful, enjoys going on runs, does well on leash and is potty trained. He does not know any reported commands and has no known medical conditions.
