Favorite gravel roads to learn on - my list. Would love more.

I'm not an aspiring Dakar Rally racer, AT ALL, but I do love to be able to manage gravel roads, because some of the things I love most, like ghost towns or historic sites or beautiful vistas, are at the end of them.

I think five of the best gravel roads to learn on in the area are:

  • Hoffman Road (entrance past Stub Stewart Park going West on Nehalem Highway) to NW Genzer to NW Bacon Road to NW Fisher Road, through Buxton (or vice versa). About 8 miles of easy gravel.
  • Pittsburg Road (from just outside of Vernonia, through Yankton, to St. Helens or vice versa). About 20 miles of gravel between Yankton and the start of Pittsburg Road outside of Vernonia.
  • Lower Nehalem Road, the gravel road that starts at Spruce Run Campground, off 26, and goes to 53, a short skip away from Wheeler. About 17 miles of easy gravel.
  • North Plains to Scappoose: 16 miles of gravel on Dixie Mountain Road and Otto Miller Road. More challenging than the first three. But a great practice road.
  • Yamhill past Barney Reservoir to Trask River Campground. About 31 miles of gravel. From 47, right at the curve coming into Yamhill from Gaston, take Pike Road, turning into Turner Creek Road, passed Menefee County Park (tiny), turning eventually onto North Fork Trask Road, and going by the reservoir, becoming North Fork Gales Creek Road but is also still North Fork Trask Road (whatever), all the way to paved Trask River Road (make a left, and there's Trask River Campground). There is a rather gnarly part passed the Reservoir with a lot of sharp turns - I think it's much easier to do in the direction I've described than in reverse, where this would be more uphill hairpins to the right than I like.

So I thought I'd share them for anyone else looking for such. And I'd love to have more suggestions.

Poker runs

Hey yall, now that I've gotten fairly acclimated to my new bike I've been getting interested in trying my first poker ride for poops and giggles. Seems like most of what's been floating around is in WA. Do we know of any happening in the pdx area any time soon. Thanks!

Lovely day at Coldwater Ridge

Today started off with overcast skies and somewhat cooler temperatures. Cooler temperatures were a nice change from the awful heat. I wasn't too sure if I wanted to wear all mesh or go with a thicker layer. I went with a thicker layer for pants and mesh jacket.

There were some other groups doing their thang on SR504. They rolled into the non-ethanol having Shell gas station in Castle Rock. One group of younger riders had an eclectic variety of bikes. I'm sure they had a blast ripping the roadway.

Refueled with non-ethanol
Taking a small break
Always a wonderful sight.

u/Character-Aardvark30 was able to come along on this outing. He's a great rider. I'd ride with him again. Along SR504, after the slower traffic had turned off in Toutle, we opened up our throttles and went full send. The 40mph curves were handled easily at a sustained rate of "speed limit" //wink wink//. The V-Strom wouldn't have been able to handle it. I'd have dropped a knee at full lean angle, and caused the bike to jiggle a little. The Tiger 900 GT Pro and Aardvark30's Triumph handled those curves without any trouble! I find myself amazed each time I jump in the saddle. The only thing this bike needs is an ass cheek massager built into the seat.

ECU Flash in PDX

Can anybody recommend a good place in the Portland area to do a full ECU tune on an Indian Motorcycle? I have a fairly new 2026 Indian Scout and I want to improve its performance, but Indian hasn’t made a tuning card for it. I don’t really care about the warranty issues. Thank you!

I don’t mind if it’s a bit of a drive, but I’m not trying to go all the way down to Salem either.

  • Meet point will be the Vancouver Cycle Gear. Show up with a full tank of gas.
  • KSU: 1200
  • Destination: Coldwater Ridge Visitor Center
  • Riding level: All skill levels. SR504 is an easy highway to handle. There will be travel along I-5 to Castle Rock.
  • The Shell station at the exit to SR504 has non-ethanol gasoline.
  • You are not obligated to hang around for the entire duration. Ride your own ride and don't feel like you have to endanger yourself or others in order to keep up.
  • NO SQUID BULLSHIT! Unsafe folks will be asked to leave.

North Fork Gales Creek Road. It starts in Yamhill County and goes by Barney Reservoir in Washington County and then all the way to the Tillamook County Campground. East gravel and dirt, though some tight turns. Yesterday. Me on my KLR, husband on his vintage Africa Twin.

…and it only took four and a half years.

Today was the day, I finally whined and complained and coerced my wife into the ride that I have been wanting to take her on since we started dating.

After waiting all week for today, I woke up this morning to the ever-present Portland bullshit of the “there is no precipitation in the forecast for the next ten days” drizzle. Fortunately it was short lived and once I got home from some morning responsibilities we hit the road - a quick chunk of slab and then on to the fun!

Scappoose/Vernonia Highway out to Vernonia to the taco truck for lunch (iykyk). Then back up 47 to 202 and out through Birkenfeld, Jewell, and Olney to Astoria. The goal of this trip (besides getting out on the bike with my lady) was hitting Frite and Scoop for the first time in too long. Took the easy way home straight back in 30. It was a long day for the wife (and for me too… ngl. Riding with a pillion is wonderful when you also adore them as a human, but it is definitely an added physical tax.)

Scappoose/Vernonia Hwy is in solid shape… probably 70-80%, there are some sections where the lines are getting pretty faint. 202 is gorgeous as always, except for the last little stretch into and out of Olney - surface is stressed and uneven, but not unridable.

30 is… 30. It was fine except for some lolly-gagging boat hauler who couldn’t manage to do better than ten-under the speed limit, and the cop that was right behind us for about 10 miles outside of Rainier.

Best day this month.

Yesterday, I made the decision to trade-in my 2015 Suzuki V-Strom650. The bike I traded for and paid cash difference is an upgrade in every conceivable way. The Triumph Tiger 900 GT Pro is a sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet bike! It'll be absolutely perfect once I install a much taller windscreen.

Anyway, enjoy the pics from today!

Local gear shops

I havent been overly impressed with the cyclegear/revazilla. Also tired of dealing with the non sense of their store availability; a few times now id make sure an item was in-stock and the sales guy just says oh it must be at the other store blah blah

What are some local, or surrounding area, spots yall recommend for gear? The only other one I know of with a decent selection is Beaverton Motorcycle

Looking for a local dirt bike shop for a Rekluse auto clutch install

Hey All, I bought a Rekluse auto clutch and installed it on my 2023 Gasgas EC300. I am having the hardest time getting it dialed in through their support and overall just videos/internet. (no fault of their support, I just think something else may be at play)

Is there a local shop around the Portland/Beaverton area that would be able to work with this? I think I'm in over my head with diagnosing what may be wrong.

I'm still working with their support and trying things but it's the same result each time (no free play gain and can move forward in first with clutch out or correct free play gain and it stalls when I release the clutch in first - it should be some free play gain and no stall ... )

So, I figured I'd get an idea if their were some local places I could take it if I exhaust all my current attempts. Thanks!

Looking for riding friends as well but with a twist.

I'm starting to consider my next bike purchase and I hoped to meet some other folks in the city to ride with and possibly (once trust is established) swap bikes for different legs of the rides. I want to get a feel for other bikes and get a better idea of what to buy down the road. I currently have a Honda VTX750 Aero. Pretty comfortable bike and decent power but I also like cafe racers, sport and dual sport bikes and I need help narrowing in on something other than a cruiser. Dm me if this sound interesting.

Friends are also friends too so I want to host some BBQ/karaoke/musicians jam parties on the weekends.

Getting first street bike

So im used to a 450 ktm 2 stroke dirt bike grew up dirtbiking starting out from a lil baby Honda . So I have alot of experience there. I've been going through looking at tons of bikes and options. (Financing as much as everyone says don't do it ) budget is under 12k-5k range. I just want something I can take care of from day 1 and don't have to worry about someone that abused it and having to replace a bunch of parts and stuff for a while. Already got strada 3 helmet alpine star boots and full gauntlet gloves from cycle gear. Still need jacket and pants (cant decide from heavy duty or lightweight ). I really like the sportsbike 650 series Kawasaki or r7 yamaha seem to be calling me. 30 male here clean driving record so insurance shopping before purchasing will be a huge factor. I know naked bikes are like a in-between of sports and cruiser. Any good tour bike I've seen is like 20k tho. Is there any suggestions almost debating about a z6xr ninja and respecting the bike and the mode settings while learning. I've heard it's worth upgrading windshield of Supersports for hwy speeds and making sure to add a cage for riding or pegs if learning to stunt. Also would lovd to make some friends so not just riding solo. All my time goes to working and being a dad so I got no social life

We met and took a ride to Sauvie Island. Went on a few more rides since then and it’s honestly great to share a trip with someone.
I recently put out feelers for finding people to ride with. I still need to reach out to y’all thank you for the responses.
Someone stole the horns off my bike when we went to the bar afterwards which sucks, but I’ll get a replacement one day.
