How do amoeba external nodes work

I’ve seen a few people posting about amoeba and the optimal setups and was wondering what the mutation to make external nodes accept internals is. I’ve done quite a few runs on amoeba and not seen it once so any help is great!

It's one of the DNA upgrades, you get a lot with amoeba so it would depend on the seed whether it comes up.

I'd recommend finding a seed with really good first level upgrades and stores and just play it over and over
