Freshman here; got invited to join Alpha Omega and have been to a few opening week events. I did some research into the club and it seems they’re a branch of the International Churches of Christ (ICOC), which is notorious for its cultish behavior.

Hey everyone, what are some genuinely good men’s haircut locations either downtown or in the State College area? I can’t find anything easily from a quick Google search. Prices aren’t my no. 1 concern, although nothing crazy expensive would be nice!

My brother just started as a freshman in the harrisburg campus and signed the lease with Nittany Place for housing since he was on the waitlist for dorms. He got into dorms but missed the deadline to cancel the Nittany place lease. Now they need a replacement student to fill that room otherwise we will have to pay the entire term's rent.

Is anyone looking for a place to stay yet?

Where can he find other students who may need housing?

Do we have any other options?

Atherton lost power for 2 hours last night and the resulting power surge damaged an electric heating pad I’ve had for years without issue. I know it’s not Penn State’s fault, but this sucks. I lived in Atherton all of last year and we never lost power. Anyone know what caused the outage?

I’m a freshman that just started at Penn State. I’m wondering what the amount of work looks like for people with this major. I feel really weird right now, because I haven’t been too busy yet. I feel like I’m falling behind or I’m doing something wrong. My classes are English 015, Econ 104, Geology (National Parks), Math 141, & PSU 6 (Smeal Business Lecture). Is it normal for a freshman to not be very busy at the beginning? My Geology class is completely online & doesn’t seem difficult at all. My PSU 6 class also seems simple & like a formality (it’s only worth 1 credit). Basically, that just leaves me with three classes & they are not really assigning that much homework. I’m used to spending hours & hours on homework for like 7 classes a day from High School. And this just feels wrong to me. I am also used to studying for a couple hours (3-5) before any tests/quizzes that I’ve had. Is this still gonna work here? Should I be worried or am I just being paranoid?

Note: I naturally experience a lot of self-doubt & struggling to feel confident in my abilities, so maybe that’s playing a role in this as well.
Note: I also have always been a straight A student all my life. I’ve taken 7 AP exams & passed them all. I’ve always been very stressed about school & I wanted to try to relax a little bit, but I need some answers before I can let myself stop stressing out so much.

It seems like they only have one option each day, and it doesn't often taste great. If someone wants options, they have to use Lion Cash. Is anyone else really disappointed in the food quality?

Harvard philosophy PhD programme

I'm a European student currently trying to figure out where I might want to pursue a PhD in the US, and I'd really appreciate some advice from people who are familiar with PennState's philosophy PhD programme.

My main interests are political philosophy and social theory, particularly 20th-century and contemporary thought. I'm interested in areas such as critical theory, pragmatism, postmodern/post-structuralist theory, and thinkers like Habermas, Rorty, Schmitt, Foucault, etc. I'm still early in my studies, so my interests will probably develop quite a bit over the next few years, but that's roughly the intellectual direction I'm currently interested in.

At the moment, I'm in my second year of a Bachelor's degree in Political Science, and I'm starting my first year of a separate Bachelor's degree in Philosophy. These are two completely separate bachelor's degrees at two different programs, it's not a combined bachelor's, or double-major within one degree which I think makes me somewhat more competitive(?). I'm hoping that having substantial training in both political science and  philosophy could be useful if I eventually apply for a PhD focused on political philosophy/social theory.

I'm currently only a sophomore, so I'm not applying anytime soon. I'm mainly trying to understand the landscape early so I can choose my courses, reading, research interests, and eventually master's/other preparation accordingly.

Hi! I’m a 2+2 student and just came to UP this summer. I’m having a really hard time with the lectures at UP and I’m considering to just skip class and self study + do homework + take exams. I quite frankly come out not absorbing much of the lectures. This is for MATH 312 and 414. I’ve self studied for MATH 230 within the past year and I did great, but I’m just not sure if it’ll work with the two new courses now.

Does anyone have experience doing this? Is it a good idea?

I’m at Berks, and struggling with the wifi here. I’ve been using eduroam and it’s horrible trying to use my desktop. psu_guest has also been performing similarly.

I work remote and it’s part of how I’m affording to go here, but it’s become insanely difficult because of the constant stutters and cut outs when on call. I use Discord and Zoom to talk with my team and at least once every other minute I will cut out for roughly 15 seconds, and it gets annoying fast.

Using the Penn State speed test, my ping and jitter have been averaging around 15ms, but the download speed has been from 3 to 60 on average. Maybe 140 on a good day. The upload has been higher from around 30 to 150.

There is an access point in the room that connects mine to my suitemate, but no matter what I do with trying to move my wifi antenna or even leave the door open it barely changes anything.

I put in a help ticket to IT, but any help beyond the basics like “make sure your computer is updated”? Does the wifi usually improve after a few weeks?

I'm interested in trying to apply and hopefully get into PSU for college and i've been interested in the greek life. I know there's gonna be a time and money commitment but I am always wondering if all frats do intense hazing that's humiliating or dangerous or if it's a select few.

I believe members aren't allowed to speak on hazing but if there's any alumni or ex-members that could help I would be very grateful.
