It is an extremely unscientific stance, ironically said often by people who claim to be pro-science.

People will roll their eyes and say “oh they did their own research” about a person who, for example, has an ignorant opinion on the efficacy of the COVID-19 vaccine.

I understand what they are trying to do, but this is an extremely counter-productive, unscientific statement. You want people to do their own, independent research. This is core in informed consent, for example, or really learning anything to make an important decision.

The problem with the person who came to the conclusion that vaccines don’t work and cause cancer or whatever nonsense isn’t that the person did their own research, it’s that they didn’t do any research and just listened to something Joe Rogan said.

If they actually did research, meaning that they looked up rote efficacy percentage and side effect statistics from the clinical trials, which do not require any special expertise to understand, they would have come to the correct conclusions. If they actually did research, they would read basic facts about how vaccines work and realize that it’s just like natural immunity, a concept they may understand.

Denigrating actual independent research handicaps people, and teaches people that science is just trusting scientists which is literally the opposite of how it’s supposed to work. Science was developed literally as a rejection of the argument to authority/expert opinion. It is about empirical evidence.

You don’t worship scientists, you don’t “believe doctors”, you don’t “trust Fauci”, that’s not how it works. You have to look up measurable data, facts, and that’s not beyond the ability of anyone without certain specific developmental disabilities. Remember, there are literally conferences of anti-vaccine physicians, numbering in the hundreds in attendance. The argument to “trust the experts” doesn’t work.

So next time someone tells you “I did my own research”, instead say “ok, what’s the source of your data?” “What, specifically, in your research did you find?” And “well, you said you did research, but it seems like you just listened to what a specific person said”.

I assume most of us were raised with the idea that wasting food is bad, particularly in less privileged households. So why do some people find it acceptable to dump perfectly good milk down the drain?

Like they wear the most normal clothes, have the same copy/pasted clean girl make up, but people always comment as if they are a doing something revolutionary.

I saw someone in a comment section say that they don't like Audiobooks because they can read and absorb information much faster than someone can speak. Sure, but that's not why I like to listen to Audiobooks. That got me thinking about this pet peeve. Listening to Audiobooks is probably my favorite way to consume a book, particularly if the reader is good. If the format isn't for you, that's fine, but what I find annoying is when people act like people who like Audiobooks are being lazy or aren't getting exactly the same information as if they read the text version of the book (they are).

When people, especially police but also news reporters, use the term “high rate of speed” when they just mean speed and not the actual rate of change of speed which would be acceleration.

I am so sick of people who complain about energy bills...and have the nerve to keep their AC blasting at 70 degrees fahrenheit all summer, day AND night, when it's about 75-85/90 degrees outside.

This person spent 5 hours cooking stews the past few days, complaining about the heat. Well, if you think it's too hot, don't spend 5 hours cooking a stew inside your house in the middle of summer. Don't put the AC at full blast to compensate because 'I don't want my kitchen to get hot!', just don't do it!

Cue the 'Mmmm I looove my AC!' people. Ok, I get it, but it's really wasteful. 75 degrees, even 80, is perfectly fine indoors - IN THE SUMMER - when it is meant to be warmer weather...many people around the world can survive in these indoor temperatures, with zero air conditioning technology at all. In fact, that is how many humans throughout history survived! If they can do it, you can too.

It is so irritating to be outside and wear a t-shirt and shorts, because it's...summer...then be freezing cold inside because someone refuses to not blast their air conditioning at unreasonably cold temperatures. It just makes no sense.

It grates on my nerves when people say “right?” to mean “you know?” It’s a habit that has caught on everywhere. To me it’s most annoying when listening to the news panelists or experts use it in their professional capacity. Actual examples;

“People are hungry. Right? Like they need bread.”

“…what you’re saying explains why he’s going where he’s going, right? I mean, if affordability is not the place where you can win, right? I mean…”

This usage of “right” in this way needs to go away. And please take “like” with you.

What is the point of this tasteless fruit? Why did I spend $4 for one when I knew deep down it would be just as tasteless as the first time I bought one?

I’ve seen it in a few different posts. Sometimes it’s aimed at people who over-apologize, so in some specific cases it’s okay.

But for the most part, no. I understand that it basically lifts them up instead of putting you down or whatever. But no. If I am late or have done something that inconveniences them that I shouldnt have, I will say sorry. And I should. I should feel bad and apologize. It doesn’t have to be a whole big things, just ‘I’m sorry about that’.

You can even do both ‘I’m sorry about the wait, thank you I appreciate your patience’.

Again in some instances for over-apologizers in times they shouldn’t apologize, they should say ‘thank you for your time answering all my questions’ instead of ‘sorry for asking so many questions’. I’m working on doing that.

But in the lateness example a lot of people use, an apology should be made. It’s not a big deal and I wish more people would do it

Someone at my work was on a power trip from having knowledge of people against their will. It’s a legal pay-to-access resource in the US, so that’s legitimate, but going around describing to me and others what personal past criminal history and financial records you bought of random coworkers just so you can claim glory isn’t making you look as superior as you hoped it would.

There’s one woman in particular who is introverted and never divulges her life but was intentionally forced into the spotlight after her history was exposed, which wasn’t much. I don’t care how many speeding tickets anyone has or what they paid for their house. Regardless, seeking anything incriminating in order to harass someone who doesn’t open up about their personal life to you, just to quench your vendetta, only enforces the subclinical psychopathy case against you.

I’ve experienced this happening at multiple employers!People just can’t mind their own business anymore and it’s become extreme.

This has been a constant back and forth with my mother, and I just can't stand it anymore.

I know for sure that I'm not speaking maliciously or in a rude manner. I just get annoyed whenever someone doesn't understand what I am saying. So I repeat and enunciate what I said. That apparently is me being mad and rude or impolite. (It also gets on my nerves when I explain something and then add something on, but the person only listens to the second part.)

I'm starting to think that everyone else is the problem and is tone deaf.

Was on the road yesterday, ended up with a giant Mack truck (with multiple trailers) tailgating my ass for 20+ miles

It was bizarre- obviously I was going 5 MPH over by default, but they just kept getting closer and closer. Less than a car length in distance.

To the point where if I had to brake at all? They would’ve absolutely crashed into me. We were going a minimum of 60 MPH (I can MAYBE understand tailgating someone if they’re going 5-10 under and you aren’t going at highway speeds, but this was legitimately dangerous)

Here’s the thing that pissed me off- I went up to TEN MPH over the speed limit (I felt physically intimidated into it, scared for my safety) and the fucker STILL wouldn’t back off???

I was like “ok, well maybe they just don’t know the correct speed limit and think I’m going too slow” several speed limit signs were passed, they did not relent.

There wasn’t anywhere safe to pull over, otherwise I would have immediately.

Weirdly though… when we got to a passing zone? They didn’t pass me. Kept tailgating.

Three or so passing zones later, they completely backed off and started acting normally again.

It may have had something to do with the sheriff we passed at one point (oncoming traffic)

What the fuck could that have been about??? Did I do something wrong??? It was single lane traffic so it’s not like I had cut them off or something.

I have a couple of stickers on my car, but nothing that would “justify” harassment (I specifically try to avoid even remotely “controversial” stickers for that reason)

TLDR; there's too many misconceptions around corsets and it annoys me especially how they are portrayed in media. They were not historically always worn tightly to the point of being unable to breathe and why is no one wearing undergarments underneath their corset

I cringe a little whenever I see people wearing corsets in a way that doesnt reflect how historical corsetry worked. I am no fashion historian but I have watched plenty of fashion historians to the point where it has now become a genuine pet peeve of mine when I see the inaccuracies

The two main things that bother me the most or when they are worn directly against the skin and are tightened to the point where you cannot breathe

From what I have learned one of the biggest misconceptions about corsets is that they were normally worn very tight. Now extreme waste reduction and tightening did exist it was called tight lacing. But tight leasing was not a common occurrence it was not how the everyday woman wore a corset. Because how else would she harvest potatoes if she couldn't breathe. A properly fitted corset was a foundation piece of an outfit. It gave structure and gave the intended shape of the torso but it wasn't the only piece that gave the shape. It was also the multiple layers of petticoats and other parts that go into the dress

And honestly it feels like the practical side has been forgotten. We've all been shown basically because of Hollywood that Victorian women held on to their bedpost while they're maid tightened the corset to the point where they couldn't breathe. But that was not practical in day to day life. You can't harvest the garden you can't cook you can't do much if you can't breathe.

Another thing that people seem to forget is that tiny waste was not always formed by the corset. Oftentimes it was either layers upon layers to create the illusion, certain posing and photographs or even photo retouching. Tiny waste in photographs weren't always a representation of what things were like back then. Photographers could dramatically alter a photo and alter the proportions of a woman's waist or body by manipulating photographic negatives. So a lot of photos of women with tiny waists may not even be at the correct representation because it was likely altered

And then there's the undergarment issue. Historically women wore layers underneath the corset oftentimes a chemise. This layer helped protect skin from rubbing against the corset and causing chafing. It also helped absorb sweat. Modern corsets can obviously be designed differently but putting a heavily boned and structured garment straight on your skin is not a good idea. Because it will likely be a recipe for misery

I think what bothers me most is just the amount of misconceptions around corsetry and Victorian fashion in general. Because nowadays media and nowadays fashion has linked core sets to the image of a painfully tight waist where you cannot breathe. And Hollywood especially loves to paint that portrait by having scenes in dramas where a woman is holding on to her bed post while she is being laced into a corset to the point where she cannot breathe. Infamous seeing that I can think of is that one scene in pirates of the Caribbean where Elizabeth fell into the water because she couldn't breathe. That wouldn't have happened if the corset was laced correctly and wasn't laced to the point of struggle.

Extreme tight leasing did exist but it was not a common occurrence it is not what normal corsetry looked like and I believe that is where the misconceptions have come from

So it's happened. I got a reddit cares notification saying someone reached out to them because they're concerned about me. Such complete and utter nonsense. I haven't posted or commented a single thing that would make someone believe I'm a danger to myself.

It burns my goat when a dim bulb thinks they're smart and uses reddit cares to essentially tell someone that they should put a stop to themselves. I'm old and basically Teflon at this point, but it might have been quite hurtful to me when I was much younger.

There should be a consequence for misuse of reddit cares. Probably there shouldn't be any reddit cares, because I can't imagine it does any good.

And yes, this is a rant, but it's a rant about my pet peeve.
