Niche but I hate this "style", and when people sing songs that have original strong and challenging vocals, say "Girl on fire" by Alicia Keys in this way, losing all the song's strengths and intentions.

I put her as an example but even Olivia Rodrigo has songs that people manage to sing more in this whispery style than her, avoiding every high or sustained notes, and that to me just seems like you're not confident in your singing skills.

A little while ago, I had made a post on a teacher's subreddit asking teachers of older grades what they thought about retaining 5 year olds so that they start kindergarten at 6 (a practice common in affluent areas so that kids can be more mature/academically skilled early on). I wanted to know if teachers could tell which kids were the oldest or the youngest in the grade, as in parenting/education literature it's really common to see that the older kids have a strong advantage early on, but that's also because a 4 and a 6 year old are really different lol. I wanted to know if this applied to, say, 15 versus 17 year olds in the same class.

I specifically titled the post something like "Teachers of older grades: can you notice who's older or younger?"

The most common response I got: "I held my kid back and now he's getting his PhD! I don't regret it."

Great! Congratulations. That doesn't answer my question.

The second most common response I got: "I'm a kindergarten teacher and the 6 year olds are way easier and better to deal with."

I think, out of ~100 responses, I got a handful from teachers of older grades/people who work with middle/high schoolers, and interestingly enough they said that academic achievement doesn't seem as correlated with age in higher grades, but actually that the older students tend to face social difficulties as they don't fit in with their younger peers. Which, curiously, kind of contradicts the unanimous positivity regarding making your child older from the other two responses. Except nobody will ever read that because the other two responses absolutely dominated the conversation.

Long hanging drapes or those cute little gauzy canopies, cribs pushed up against windows, stupid colorful throw pillows in the crib, ruffled crib bumpers/bed skirts around the base of the crib, lots of little Knick knacks in grabbing distance, wall decorations low over the crib, towering floor lamps with extension cords. I don’t care how cutely fandom themed your Lord of the Rings mural is or how perfect it looks on the home decorating sub. Make nurseries that are safe for babies! That’s their whole purpose!

I understand the gesture and I always make sure to say thank you but it’s so annoying sometimes. I haven’t even made it on the curb and I look to see someone clearly irritated holding the door open for me. Now I have to do that awkward jog to the door.

Mostly just venting here, I get that its mostly just server traffic and whatnot but i cannot STAND when im waiting to get access back into an account that im logged out of. ive got my username and password entered, but then they make you enter a verification code regardless if you dont have two step on. then it takes forever for you to just receive it, despite constant refreshing. that or sometimes i dont recieve it at all. its just really annoying overall

I get that it’s meant to be a conversation starter, but it irks me regardless depending on how obvious the question is.

My pencil is on the paper, mid line. “Did you draw that?” “Are you drawing right now?” Fuck does it look like I’m doing??

I order a drink at a restaurant with someone. “Are you gonna drink that?” As opposed to what?? Bathing in it? Why would I order it if I’m not going to drink it?

“Did you dye your hair?” No I just woke up with it randomly a completely different colour.

I just feel like it’s a pretty shitty conversation starter. “Are you xyz?” “Yeah.” And that’s where it ends. It’s usually followed up with different questions, but like, just start with those? Why preface it with asking for information you already know?

I despise the gen Z need to have their tongues out in their photos. My gen Z daughter got a new pair of sunglasses and sent me a pic with them on her face and all I could focus on was the tongue! Seriously!?

This has been a constant back and forth with my mother, and I just can't stand it anymore.

I know for sure that I'm not speaking maliciously or in a rude manner. I just get annoyed whenever someone doesn't understand what I am saying. So I repeat and enunciate what I said. That apparently is me being mad and rude or impolite. (It also gets on my nerves when I explain something and then add something on, but the person only listens to the second part.)

I'm starting to think that everyone else is the problem and is tone deaf.

One of the waiter Grover sketches from sesame street was a parody of Shakespeare plays and took place in medieval times. While it actually got lots of the lingo down, it fell into the trap of medieval parodies ending every damn word with "th". For example "would you careth to hearth the special of the dayth" or "doth maketh my mouth waterth". It's such a surface level thing and it's really not funny.

This just irks me in the wrong way.

Every time I see attractive couples of my social media feed, people always comment how they "love to see pretty people together" or "thankfully none of them is ugly, they both deserve each other" like whaaaat? And they get so many likes for saying that…

I am the only one who finds this crazy?

Like people get so upset when someone in a couple is seen as less attractive than their partner. "They were truly desperate/they must be rich/they must have an amazing personality/they married their third @"

People are so mean to people they think are unattractive and for no reason. Just pure heatred.

I've noticed that a pretty common trend on Reddit in particular is for one angry commenter to misread the tone of a post, or come up with some theory about what OP really meant. When OP says that's not what they meant, the commenter simply won't believe them. At that point, there's not much of a productive conversation that can be had, especially if neither person can provide any real evidence to support their assertion.

I don't like when people try to get away with plausible deniability either, but unfortunately, there's just not much you can do to prove that someone's intention was not only contrary to what they claim it was, but contrary to the literal meaning of the words they used as well. And for what it's worth, there have been several times when I posted something that a commenter insisted was meant a certain way, and I knew for a fact that they were wrong, because I am the only person who can see inside my own head. This is the kind of argument that you just have to drop sometimes, even if you really think you're right.

This is way too much detail and work for a Monday morning." in response to someones large post regarding the inconsistent timeline of a popular show thats based off a popular book. like who pissed in his cheerios? also the OP wasnt even in the same time zone as the person who replied, it wasnt even the same day in their timezone. I replied calling him out and he deleted the comment so its not all that deep but ive seen it dozens of times before as well and its just lame, like dont open your up reddit when youre first waking up on a Monday if you cant handle people posting in the subreddits you literally follow

EDIT: to those of you addressing how I type, I appreciate the concern, but I would like to clear a couple things up! I am using the reddit app on my phone, I personally write very casually like this when I use my phone/social media. if I were writing an essay or article I would put more thought/effort into the formatting, punctuation, capitalization, etc. however, this is a reddit post and not one that im taking terribly seriously! if my phone doesnt automatically add an apostrophe, then there wont be one. if i were using a keyboard attached to a computer or a pen and paper then my writing would look very different. I dont have a particular reason for going about it this way, I just always have! idk if it matters at all but I didnt really get to have a smart phone for any extended period of time until I was 17/18, and im 24 now.

Maybe I’m in the minority but I was taught that “a couple of things” means two things, maybe three. Four is pushing it.

But every now and again, I get someone who calls me at work saying “I want to look at a couple of my invoices.” Without wanting to be too literal, I assume this means they have a small number of invoices they want to look at. So by the time we have gone through a few of those invoices, I’m thinking we are coming close to wrapping up this conversation.

And then it turns out, they actually want to look at 15 additional, individual invoices, all with their own set of questions and complications.

Why do people do this? It drives me crazy.

I’ve seen it in a few different posts. Sometimes it’s aimed at people who over-apologize, so in some specific cases it’s okay.

But for the most part, no. I understand that it basically lifts them up instead of putting you down or whatever. But no. If I am late or have done something that inconveniences them that I shouldnt have, I will say sorry. And I should. I should feel bad and apologize. It doesn’t have to be a whole big things, just ‘I’m sorry about that’.

You can even do both ‘I’m sorry about the wait, thank you I appreciate your patience’.

Again in some instances for over-apologizers in times they shouldn’t apologize, they should say ‘thank you for your time answering all my questions’ instead of ‘sorry for asking so many questions’. I’m working on doing that.

But in the lateness example a lot of people use, an apology should be made. It’s not a big deal and I wish more people would do it

I was at my doctors office yesterday, in an empty waiting room. This man proceeds to come in and sit right next to me in the empty waiting room. What is up with that?

I saw someone in a comment section say that they don't like Audiobooks because they can read and absorb information much faster than someone can speak. Sure, but that's not why I like to listen to Audiobooks. That got me thinking about this pet peeve. Listening to Audiobooks is probably my favorite way to consume a book, particularly if the reader is good. If the format isn't for you, that's fine, but what I find annoying is when people act like people who like Audiobooks are being lazy or aren't getting exactly the same information as if they read the text version of the book (they are).

Was on the road yesterday, ended up with a giant Mack truck (with multiple trailers) tailgating my ass for 20+ miles

It was bizarre- obviously I was going 5 MPH over by default, but they just kept getting closer and closer. Less than a car length in distance.

To the point where if I had to brake at all? They would’ve absolutely crashed into me. We were going a minimum of 60 MPH (I can MAYBE understand tailgating someone if they’re going 5-10 under and you aren’t going at highway speeds, but this was legitimately dangerous)

Here’s the thing that pissed me off- I went up to TEN MPH over the speed limit (I felt physically intimidated into it, scared for my safety) and the fucker STILL wouldn’t back off???

I was like “ok, well maybe they just don’t know the correct speed limit and think I’m going too slow” several speed limit signs were passed, they did not relent.

There wasn’t anywhere safe to pull over, otherwise I would have immediately.

Weirdly though… when we got to a passing zone? They didn’t pass me. Kept tailgating.

Three or so passing zones later, they completely backed off and started acting normally again.

It may have had something to do with the sheriff we passed at one point (oncoming traffic)

What the fuck could that have been about??? Did I do something wrong??? It was single lane traffic so it’s not like I had cut them off or something.

I have a couple of stickers on my car, but nothing that would “justify” harassment (I specifically try to avoid even remotely “controversial” stickers for that reason)

I'm going to use music as an example here. People that hate on nickleback or imagine dragons *just because* instead of giving a real reason why they don't like it. I don't like either of those bands in general but I've heard their music after hearing all the hate and they really aren't that bad. They are just generic bands.

Why so much hatred for milquetoast music and art? If it's so boring and bland, shouldn't people that claim to have good taste be just ignoring the bands? It seems like people are telling on themselves that they only like to judge bland music and art because they themselves don't enjoy art of any kind outside of what is fed to them mainstream.

If those haters of music and art of bland bands have such good taste in music and art, shouldn't they be ignoring mainstream media art and music like Swift and Nickelback and Imagine Dragons? It's not like they're getting paid to hate on them. They're doing it because they choose to listen and hate what they listen to.

Main point: if those people think they're such great judges of art and music, then why do they waste their time with what mainstream music is? Just listen to what you like if you're so "educated" in what good music is in modern times.

I hate the follow up question more than the first question because they’re basically saying:

“You’re tall, young, and black. You HAVE to be playing basketball”

I always respond respectfully to their questions, which is a question I have to answer to atleast once a month. But I kill all my engagement in the conversation the second they say:

“If I had your height, dude, I’d be in the NBA/D1/Varsity.”

Disclaimer: this isn’t about any situation in which i’m personally dealing with, but it is something i’m currently witnessing in someone else’s life. I do see it often with certain personality types and I know a lot of this can be about personality differences. I still think it’s annoying.

It’s okay to admit that you’re a superficial friend. It’s okay to admit to yourself that you are not a support system friend. Someone who is going through normal life hardships is not the same as the always in a crisis friend though. Someone sharing pieces of their life with you and it not being sunshine and daisies all the time is not them trauma dumping. It’s okay to admit to yourself that you are not this type of friend for someone or for anyone. It’s okay to communicate that to them instead of being rude to them until they go away because you would prefer small, positive talk and casual hang outs all the time over anything else. It’s okay to say no. It’s natural for people to want deep connections over time though so if you do not communicate then eventually that’s what will start to happen. If you only want surface level then make that known!! You’ll lose friends in the process, but at least you were honest and not stringing someone along.

What annoys me is the talking shit about every friend that is doing normal friend things such as seeking comfort during a hard time or opening up about something in their past (or even present). Not everyone is trying to be a negative Nancy because they are not making substantial effort to be an annoyingly positive person all the time. They’re not a robot. If you cannot handle that part of friendship then communicate it. You don’t need to nit pick everything they’re doing that isn’t ‘positive’ to try and find issues in someone. Sometimes your emotional unavailability is the problem. Not everything is supposed to be positive. Not everyone had a positive life. People will have bad days. Not everyone will always be living stress-free lives. Not everyone will be happy all the time. Not every conversation will be about happy things. Everyone around you will experience all other emotions aside from happy and energetic. They will be shocked, excited, sad, stressed, angry, grumpy, worried, have lower energy than most days, and feel the full spectrum of emotions. I don’t even know why anyone would want someone to keep all that in, but that’s beside the point. They’re a human-being, not a character. It doesn’t mean something is terribly wrong with them. It doesn’t mean they’re always negative. You can admit incompatibility.

And at some point the overall resentment that builds shows up in the already limited conversations everyone’s allowed to have with you becomes a bigger issue because it’s like ok, so what? they just said that it’s going to be rainy for the rest of the week. Are they really the most negative person because they mentioned the ‘bad’ weather? They love the rain. Maybe they want to make the most of the last remaining sunshine by doing something fun? Now you are annoyed and being mean to them over dumb things and it could have been prevented if you had just said to them that you can’t be a friend to them. You aren’t what they’re looking for. And I get it, it feels weird to outwardly communicate these things, but it’s better than what is currently happening where you’re building resentment because someone is seeking more out of the friendship and you just want superficial, positivity-only people in your life. Now they have a “friend” who talks shit about them, gets irritated over everything they do and say, can’t be honest with themselves, and tbh cannot handle anything.

At least by admitting to yourself that you’re not the type of friend to be anything more than superficial with then it would save a lot of time and bullshit for everyone involved.

What is the point of this tasteless fruit? Why did I spend $4 for one when I knew deep down it would be just as tasteless as the first time I bought one?
