The reason maybe:

viral internet rumors claiming he was fired by Disney and Marvel Studios over his political speech or comments are entirely false. He continues to act actively, starring in recent projects like the thriller film Crime

Fired by Marvel? He was in Spiderman and I think he's confirmed for Doomsday

451

u/KebabGud 22d ago

In spider-man?
Hell he finally got to play the real Hulk

166

u/Funmachine 22d ago edited 22d ago

finally?

Did you miss Avengers, Age of Ultron and Ragnarok?

204

u/JCWOlson 22d ago edited 22d ago

I mean, neither of those come even close to Hulk doing stuff like casually picking up the entire island of Manhattan

Edit: To address the "casually" part, go watch the episode. He literally looks like he's chilling, and only two people are surprised that Hulk can do a two trillion pound squat

23

u/WorldsWeakestMan 22d ago

Him casually tossing Fenrir and punching Surtur hard enough to stagger him in Ragnarok is objectively the strongest feats he has performed in the MCU.

He was angry and a little bigger in Spider-Man but his greatest shown strength was in Ragnarok by far, Surtur weighs a hell of a lot more than the rubble which yanked him down.

Scarlett Johansson has been pretty pro Israel for the better part of a decade now

207

u/Sad_pathtic_winker 22d ago

She was a spokes person for Soda Stream while they were producing products in the illegally occupied territories.

63

u/Randymgreen 22d ago edited 22d ago

Not sure what dickhead is downvoting you. It's a verifiable fact. The ad is on youtube. Also it's the one thing to think israel should exist but you don't even need to support companies in the west bank specifically.

105

u/teaop100 22d ago edited 22d ago

Part of the reason people liked Soda Stream was because it manufactured in the West Bank. It was the main point of the marketing. The tag line was "Island of Peace". Back then it was seen as a positive thing because Palestinians who wouldn't get any jobs otherwise were getting stable wages 4x the average wage in the WB, in a highly successful global company.

I certainly thought Scarlett Johansson took the job precisely because she thought it was step in the right direction for everyone involved. She and mostly everyone who bought SodaStream products thought they were actually supporting a project for stability and peace.

SodaStream CEO openly criticizes Netanyahu and his government.

40

u/tehutika 22d ago

Sadly none of that matters to the rabble on Reddit.

21

u/hypercosm_dot_net 22d ago

Once reddit chooses a side on a narrative it's hard to stop.

You have to keep repeating the facts for like several years, until finally they reject the incorrect view and pretend that the correct version is what they thought all along.

37

u/sneakysnake1111 22d ago

Holy shit, you aren't even remotely kidding.

In a 2019 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, she said "I love Woody. I believe him, and I would work with him anytime."

2.7k

u/sloth0623 22d ago

Didn't know. That sucks.

2.3k

u/Crunchyfrozenoj 22d ago edited 22d ago

Years ago Scarlett was a UN ambassador then signed a deal to be the face of (isreali company) Sodastream. The UN basically told her she had to choose and she chose Soda.

Edit: Oxfam, not the UN.

57

u/coresect23 22d ago

It was Oxfam actually. In an interview she said, "..I also think for a non-governmental organisation to be supporting something that's supporting a political cause … something feels not right about that to me. There's plenty of evidence that Oxfam does support and has funded a BDS [boycott, divest, sanctions] movement in the past." So she is also against BDS, and Oxfam has never actually directly supported it either.

edit to add interview: Scarlett Johansson: I have no regrets over ad for West Bank drinks company SodaStream | Scarlett Johansson | The Guardian

11

u/ZiKyooc 22d ago

I was working for Oxfam back then. They will/were basically blacklist any company that even submit a bid on a tender in occupied territories that is not conducted by a Palestinian company.

Oxfam is not neutral, it will take position whenever it is supporting it's mandate/goal of fighting inequality to end poverty and injustice.

8

u/at-least-2-swans 22d ago

The idea that an NGO shouldn't be political is baffling to me. We should leave anything that might affect how people live purely to political parties and companies?

I'd say individuals but a big way the every day person supports change is through supporting an NGO. Be it on human or environmental issues and anything in between.

Sodastream the company was built on an Israeli settlement in the occupied West Bank (illegal under international law), after being criticised they did up sticks and moved back into Isreal, but in doing so most Palestinian lost their jobs due to work permit restrictions and apartheid in Israel

759

u/_Steakwich 22d ago

This is wild, I had no idea Sodastream was Israeli

371

u/Deldenary 22d ago

They are pretty open about it on the packaging

526

u/Business-Drag52 22d ago

That sticker is a fucking riot

89

u/Environmental_Coat60 22d ago

The founder of SodaStream was pretty intentional about using his company to build bridges between the two communities and provide equitable and just economic opportunities and working conditions for Palestinians living in the West Bank. When they left the West Bank he fought hard to get work permits for the West Bank employees who would be losing their jobs, but most were unable to keep their jobs.

Just an example of one of the few BDS wins, and how it disproportionally affected the Palestinians and not Israelis or the company itself. In fact SodaStream was sold to PepsiCo in 2018 for $3.2 billion.

It's not (anymore). It's owed by PepsiCo. The company being based in on settled land had lots of controversies to it. While it might be true that Palestinians didn't love the fact it was on occupied land, they paid quite well (in comparison) and employed 500-600 Palestinians. When the company moved to Israeli territory most of them lost their jobs. As so often, it's complicated.

u/Distinct_Car_1183 22d ago

00.1% of Syrias 2013 exports went to Israel, now none. 00.0007% of Lebanons exports go to Israel. Both neighboring states sieged by Israel.

80% of Palestines exports go to Israel, because Israel runs checkpoints ay every border and highway, deciding what may go out.

Palestine is a slave state.

Correction: While the company currently is operating out of Israeli, it was set up in London in 1903, first sold to home consumers in 1955, was bought by an Israeli company in 1998. Then was bought by PepsiCo in 2018, but still operates out of, and is HQed in Israel.

3

u/ikillsheep4u 21d ago

I’m confused is it bad that they were built there or bad that they left?

3

u/New-Pass-3777 21d ago

Palestinians in the West Bank aren’t citizens of Israel because the West Bank isn’t part of Israel. If you think the West Bank IS a part of Israel you are literally agreeing with the settlers. Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza not being allowed to work in Israel is not evidence of apartheid. It’s like saying Switzerland is an apartheid state because Spaniards can’t work there without a work permit.

For anyone interested, there are Sodastream alternatives!

Drinkmate makes a better product overall - their design can carbonate pretty much any liquid.

If you already have a sodastream, most brewing supply stores can refill your co2 canisters. Alternatively, with a couple of wrenches you can even refill them by weight with dry ice pellets (google is your friend here).

102

u/utspg1980 22d ago

I'm like 2/3 water, can it carbonate me?

21

u/Thomas_K_Brannigan 22d ago

Humans are technically slightly carbonated. We produce carbon dioxide CO2) as waste, and this turns into carbonic acid in the blood. This is the same thing that happens when you carbonate drinks. And, when you hold your breath, you'll be slightly more carbonated!

Related fact: our bodies can't sense the presence of oxygen. Rather, it senses the lowered ph from that carbonic acid to tell you when to breathe. This is one reason low oxygen environment that are also low CO2 are very dangerous, your body doesn't realize it's not getting the needed oxygen

4

u/CanIBeBlue 22d ago

u/TricellCEO 22d ago

3

u/RapturousCultist 22d ago

No. Because you are mostly water. And Bleach is mostly water. Therefore you are Bleach.

And will release a toxic gas, rather than become carbonated.

Interesting! Sodastream had a difficult time like a decade ago when i was using one carbonating random stuff. Like don't do milk, shit went everywhere

13

u/xSTSxZerglingOne 22d ago

That's because milk is quite viscous, and its proteins cause bubbles to be much more...persistent.

I am very unsurprised that it went everywhere. I don't think anything could carbonate milk without a mess.

7

u/TheKnightMadder 22d ago

Even if you could you wouldn't want to. Carbonation makes things acidic. All a soda stream would do would turn milk into soured milk in an instant.

You can use nitrous to do it though.

5

u/DavidIckeHadAPoint 22d ago

Wouldn’t nitrous turn it into something like whipped cream, or what we call “whipped” instead of “carbonated”?

3

u/Butternades 22d ago

5

u/LastAmongUs 22d ago

I’m sorry, maybe it’s because it’s so early or maybe I’m still a bit buzzed from last night but I can’t imagine what the fuck a carbonated grape is and google is only giving me carbonated grape juice. Can you please explain?

5

4

u/elitegenoside 21d ago

And let's not forget her willingness to take any role, even if she's not quite the right ethnicity. Ryan Reynolds divorced her and married Olivia Wilde, and that should actually say a lot if you're aware of HER reputation.

And while it's not something I specifically judge, but I have a friend that met her multiple times (worked at a popular restaurant in a city where she was filming), and that friend says she always reeks of cigarettes and has bad breath (makes sense).

And a lot of people try to create a victim role by saying it’s antisemitism that people are against the genocide which Israel is carrying out, together with the call that there is no genocide at all.

likely from people as well, its easy to forget if youre stuck in a bubble, but the average westerner is in-fact pro-israeli

33

u/Corfiz74 22d ago

That's fortunately shifting now, thanks to Netanyahu, Smotrich et al. They are currently deliberately destroying civilian infrastructure, water supply, crops and the sewage system in Lebanon - they want to turn it into a plague-riddled wasteland to drive the population away. It's infuriating that Western public media is still hardly mentioning it.

Not to mention the double and triple taps on schools, where they made an effort to kill as many medical staff as they could - or the deliberate killing of journalists and aid workers. They should be sentenced in the Hague and locked away for life!

Why would an Avengers tattoo be relevant? I don't see the connection.

13

u/Worried_Raspberry313 22d ago

Some people might just see the tattoo as a “I was part of this important project and it was a cool experience and I’m happy a lot of people loved the movie!” but some people might see it as a way of saying “we’re a group of people who appreciate each other and we’re celebrating how much we loved to work together”. If Mark Ruffalo didn’t like his coworkers, even if he didn’t have any problem with them while filming but he didn’t like them as a person, maybe he didn’t want to have a tattoo in common with them. Like, if my high school class decided back in the day “let’s all have a graduation tattoo to remember this great moment!” I wouldn’t have gotten it because even if I didn’t have problems with any other student, I don’t want to have the same tattoo pretending I’m happy I had to spend years of my life surrounded by fucking assholes I don’t want to see again in my life.

It would be a sign of solidarity with people who hold beliefs and political perspectives he doesn’t agree with.

Agreed. Also, real reason, Mark Ruffalo probably just didn’t want to get a tattoo.

48

u/mxzf 22d ago

Almost certainly. This whole thing happened way before any of the Gaza stuff happened.

Also, I'm pretty sure this whole meme has nothing to do with Gaza whatsoever and is actually about the fact that most of the OG Avengers have been killed off in the MCU by now, but Banner/Hulk is still around. It's not that deep.

27

u/lateformyfuneral 22d ago

I've heard about people having an "Israel theory of everything" but this thread takes the cake. It had nothing to do with politics, it's just a guy not wanting to get a permanent tattoo of some movie.

"way before any of the Gaza stuff happened" might be a bit of an overstatement, but I could believe they started getting tats before a single one of them had any of their geopolitical opinions featured in any publication...

I think that's assigning way too much meaning to a tattoo.

Honest question, what does Israel and Palestine have to do with the Avengers?

3

u/DrSpaceman575 22d ago

And to think we were only a few celebrity tweets away from solving the crisis in Gaza :(

3

u/DickRiculous 22d ago

That’s fine, but he is also clear he is not anti Israel. Just against their current government. That’s how many Israel supporters feel. The problem is that the anti Israel and pro Palestine people have a black and white reductionist way of looking at this stuff. They treat it like a 0 sum game and and blather on about the evils of Zionism. Like, bitch, they have a fascist autocrat in power, similar too, but worse than the US. We’re going the same shitty cha cha slide towards fascism and striking out against other countries and allies and these same people aren’t saying shit about what’s happening in our own government. So I praise Ruffalo for his balanced and thoughtful remarks on the subject. Many of these activists “are not serious people.”

3

u/n33dadviceplease 22d ago

And not getting an avengers tattoo 10 years before the Oct 7 attacks is relevant how? So parasocial lmao. He probably just didn’t want a tattoo…

He doesn't have ANY tattoos. This is not political. He doesn't have tattoos pro or against anything.

87

u/SourceTheFlow 22d ago

Which might've been his reasoning, but that would not make sense for the comment to reference.

94

u/ChaoticKiwiNZ 22d ago

I remember an article from years ago where Chris Evans specifically said in regards to the Avengers tattoo that Mark doesn't like tattoos and didn't want to get one with them.

35

u/ExiledCanuck 22d ago

And this is a completely valid opinion and decision on his point.

I’ve come close to getting a tattoo a few times, even going so far as to draw them up and design them, make an appointment with an artist and have a chat. And every time, I decided that I simply wasn’t comfortable having something marked on my body for the rest of my life.

Realistically, the comment is more likely referencing the fact that the rest of the OG Avengers have been killed off in the MCU by now, but Banner/Hulk is still around (implying that the Avengers tattoo led to their characters being killed off).

It's nonsense and happenstance either way, but people look for patterns in randomness.

Maybe because he hasn't been allowed to do any promotional events anymore, because Marvel/ Disney want to block him from airing his views on Gaza?

96

u/skellyboysteve 22d ago

Can you really call it a trend when it hasn’t fallen out of fashion in decades?

118

u/Punpun42 22d ago

decades? scientists dig corpses from graves which are 2500 years old and have arm lengthed tattoos

53

u/skellyboysteve 22d ago

I was talking more about it becoming more socially acceptable in modern culture decades ago, but you are correct that it has certainly been going on much longer than that. Hardly a trend.

I sort of know what you're referring to - the people who impulsively get little line tattoos like these on holiday or whatever. That does feel like tattoos-as-a-trend. In my experience, nobody who did this regrets them. After all, they're small and unobtrusive and they bring to mind good memories.

But there's a lot of people out there who get tattoos after thinking a long time about it too, and that's not trend hopping.
