I thought it was in the Manga, not just something added for the TV / movie versions of the story. I sorta recall that the manga started before the first animated version, but the manga may not have been complete, as it is fairly long.

Can someone remind me?

This particular event happens in the manga yes, as well as in both anime adaptations.

I think you are a little backwards on the animes. There are 2 anime adaptations: 2003's "Fullmetal Alchemist" and 2009's "Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood". The Former was running at the same time as the manga and eventually ran out of content to adapt, so it diverged the story into an anime-original direction. Then after the manga was completed, They created FMA:Brotherhood to provide an adaptation that more closely adapted the story of the original.

The divergence point is somewhat early in the story, but definitely after Shao Tucker in introduced.

The og one is still good and doesn't rush the early story so much, but yes brotherhood tells the complete story
