Shou Tucker; prior to the events of the show FMA:B, he fused his wife with an animal to 'create' a talking chimera for his State Alchemist license (Which is essentially a military funded research grant thing, but with the caveat that should you be called to arms you must as a State Alchemist, as you're given the rank (starting rank) of Major if you're a State Alchemist.) All it could do was moan in pain and asked to be killed. His State Alchemist licensure test was coming up again, and in order to keep the license, he did it again. This time with his like 5 year old daughter and pet dog.
Edward Elric, the protag and youngest State Alchemist (a certifiably literal genius) is staying with him and his daughter (no one knows how he created the chimera, and everyone just thinks his wife left him and his daughter) and discovers his plot, just barely too late to stop it. He finds Nina and Alexander (the girl and dog) fused together. All she can do is moan in pain, and she looks at him and calls him 'Big Brother... Ed... ward?' and it makes him go crazy and he starts wailing on Shou Tucker, only stops when Nina begs him to stop hurting her father.
Nina is eventually mercy killed by a character named Scar I think the next episode. Shou is never put to trial as he is also killed, IIRC.

Brotherhood tells more, but there are parts of 2003 that should be watched, like the Shou arc and the first introduction to Barry The Chopper, which makes Warehouse 7 hit a little harder.
Also, 2003 has the State Alchemist Exam, and that's the funniest episode out of either series.

u/MemeHermetic 4h ago
The bird was something else. He did this with his wife as the first experiment that made him a state alchemist then framed it as her having left him or something. Then he was about to lose his license, so he did it again with his daughter and was caught by the Elric boys this time.

u/Mellafee 1d ago
Never watched the show but for some reason clicked on a fairly long ‘worst moments in anime’ video once while I was drunk and that was one of the moments. They spent just enough time on it in the vid that I was genuinely intrigued in how it could be so bad before seeing what finally happens. Shit scarred me, bro. I had no real context for the story and no understanding of why the other characters were even there, but the clips explained just enough for me to be so horrified that I instantly recognized the dude on the shirt.
2
u/Low-Scarcity-5000 22h ago
The series is very much a worthwhile watch if you ever get around to it. This is probably the biggest oh s**t moment. This moment was rated the way it was because of how jarring it was. Adorable daughter, cute puppy, seemingly kind man - to what you saw.

I thought it was in the Manga, not just something added for the TV / movie versions of the story. I sorta recall that the manga started before the first animated version, but the manga may not have been complete, as it is fairly long.
Can someone remind me?
18
u/Kankunation 1d ago
This particular event happens in the manga yes, as well as in both anime adaptations.
I think you are a little backwards on the animes. There are 2 anime adaptations: 2003's "Fullmetal Alchemist" and 2009's "Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood". The Former was running at the same time as the manga and eventually ran out of content to adapt, so it diverged the story into an anime-original direction. Then after the manga was completed, They created FMA:Brotherhood to provide an adaptation that more closely adapted the story of the original.
The divergence point is somewhat early in the story, but definitely after Shao Tucker in introduced.
2
u/anand_rishabh 1d ago
Ok, so if i were to get into full metal alchemist, i just need to watch brotherhood?
13
u/Kankunation 1d ago
Technically yes, but with 2 caveats.
A lot of people do actually really like the 2003 anime As its own thing even though it diverges from the manga it's still mostly good, and there's even a sizeable amount of people prefer its darker tone and slower pace. Could be worth watching both of them at different times.
One of the only major flaws of Brotherhood is that it was written with the assumption that most people watching it were already exposed to either the Manga or the 2003 anime. Because of this, they spend very little time in the early story story contents and try to rush watchers to where tothe point in the story where the 2 anime converge, glossing over a few of the early moments that introduced some characters and eased you into the setting. This doesn't ruin the start of brotherhood by any means, but you may benefit from at the very least watching the first 10-15 or so episodes of 2003 first to fill in gaps left behind by this decision
As an example of #2: the point where the 2 stories diverge entirely in the 5th laboratory arc. In FMA03, this arc starts in episode 19. But in brotherhood, it starts in episode 8. In fairness, about 4 or 5 of those FMA03 episode could be considered filler to some extent, but most are still worth watching imo. They are mostly canon to the manga, just cut for time or rearrange elsewhere in brotherhood.

2
u/mittenmarionette 20h ago
all 3 versions are good, which is rare. The manga is just more of an investment, so brotherhood is a great place to start.

It's the dad from FullMetal Alchemist who uses his powers to turn his daughter into a horrid creature that just wants to die.
Also, this black man isn't that girl's father. They are dating.

Anime enthusiast Ernie the Giant Chicken here. The dad is wearing a t-shirt depicting Shou Tucker the "Sowing Life Alchemist." From the Fullmetal Alchemist Manga, Anime, and lost Anime. In order to keep his accreditation as a state alchemist, Tucker claimed to have created Chimera (animal hybirds) capable of human thought and speech. His first Chimera only said "Let me die." This was shortly after his wife abandoned him and their child.
He produced a second Chimera when he was due for re-accreditation, that the Elric brothers discovered that he had created by fusing his dog and his daughter together. Tucker admitted this, broke down laughing and admitted that he had committed crimes against man, god, nature, and he would do so again.
Shou is not a great father, he's in the running for the worst.
Speaking of bad fathers, it's about time I payed a little visit to Mr. Griffen.
I'll leave you with this meme. Anime loving Ernie out.

u/Pennypieraves11 16h ago
I thought the first chimera was his wife, and the story about her leaving was just a cover up. maybe that’s just a theory and not canon though
2
u/WorstCryptographer7 13h ago
No, it's canon. It's been some time since I saw FMAB, but from what I remember, it stopped short of actually saying it. Ed asked about Shou's wife and her disappearance, and he confirmed it.

Additional fun fact from someone who is not a part of the family guy universe: According to the creator of Full Metal Alchemist, Hell exists in the FMA Universe SPECIFICALLY for Shou Tucker

The shirt is ironic.
It depicts Shou Tucker from the manga/ anime Full Metal Alchemist. He is infamous within the community from his experiments in which he douse heinous things.Such as fusing his wife with an animal and later his daughter with the family dog in order to keep his fame and prestige as a scientist.
Long story short...he definitely isn't Dad#1
20
u/gellshayngel 1d ago edited 1d ago
Trying to be vague and spoiler free as possible... The dad on the shirt is a character from the anime "Full Metal Alchemist" that turns his kid into a monster.
11
u/Lopsided_Blacksmith5 1d ago
Why do y'all care about spoilers the show's been out for over 20 years?
14
u/Vyntarus 1d ago
I'd guess because going into it blind allows for the full emotional experience of the show.
Like the Red Wedding in Game of Thrones, knowing what's going to happen dulls the experience.
2
u/Encyclopenia 1d ago
Thank fuck for people like you.
I never understand people spoiling shit for others and then saying « well it’s been out for years »
Well, yeah, but people don’t necessarily read/watch them as they came out… Harry Potter has been out for years, I’m still not gonna spoil it for the next kid I see reading it.
2
u/Thesmokingcode 18h ago
Got my buddy who had somehow managed to avoid everything GoT related other than the ending sucked into it finally earlier in the year and it genuienly sucked sometimes talking to him because he wanted to talk theories so bad and I really wanted to engage but I just had to nod my head and basically go "yeah man who knows"
Was constantly reading episode summaries as he went along so I didn't accidentally reveal anything he hadn't seen.

Because some people have yet to consume all existing media. I only watched it earlier this year myself. Remember kiddos, just because something is old doesn’t mean literally everyone who would like to watch it has already done so. Not everyone has heard of everything, or seen everything, etc etc

The image shows OOP with his GF, wearing a shirt with Shou Tucker from Full Metal Alchemist with a "#1 dad" cup.
First you must know that the tee shirt hides a very dark joke. He isn’t the #1 dad at all. He used forbidden alchemy in an experiment to fuse his young daughter with his pet dog. Anime fans would get the reference and understand that this is sarcasm.
But however, non anime fans would have a harder time knowing and would think it as a genuine "dad shirt". Not to mention the ressemblance and height difference between the two lovers, they could also be mistaken as father and daughter, which they were, leading to a ton of embarrassment because they most likely wouldn’t want to tell about the joke behind the shirt to these poor ladies.
2
u/FireKnight-1224 1d ago
Tricia Takanawa here.
I'm standing here in the middle of a burning building, surrounded by exploding beer kegs and a man riding a giant chicken. The image on the man's shirt is that of Shou Tucker, known to be one of the worst fathers ever in Anime History. I cannot speak of the atrocities as I am currently choking on smoke here. That's why the repost says "you're a sicko". It's an irony. And that's the news.
Back to you, Tom.

Deputy Director Stan here. Ohhhh no. No no no no no. Anybody who watched Fullmetal Alchemist just saw that shirt and immediately heard emotional damage approaching at highway speed.
That’s Shou Tucker on his shirt. You know, the father who looked at his daughter Nina, looked at the family dog Alexander, and somehow thought, “You know what? I can ruin anime for an entire generation before dinner.”
So now these sweet older ladies are walking up like, “Awww, your daddy loves you! Cherish these moments, sweetheart!” Meanwhile Dad is standing there wearing the anime equivalent of a CPS wanted poster.
That is the joke.
This man didn’t choose a Goku shirt. Didn’t choose Naruto. Didn’t even choose Vegeta, and that guy spent half his son’s childhood acting like affection was a side quest.
No. He picked Shou Tucker.
CIA assessment: monitor the daughter. Locate the family dog. Confiscate all alchemy textbooks. And if anybody in that mall hears a tiny voice say “Ed…ward…”
I’m calling Mustang.
Roger’s already in the food court drawing a transmutation circle around Auntie Anne’s.

Everyone is only catching half of this. Shou Tucker turns his daughter into a chimera by fusing her with the family dog... he did the same to his wife, so a very bad dad. Thing is, the daughter is killed... so the Gengar outfit, a ghost Pokémon, is representing that.
Dark humor.

Oh finally one I can answer!
The character in the shirt is from the anime 'Fullmetal Alchemist'
He turns his own daughter into a dog, for the sake of showing his scientific prowess or something.
As such, he is MOST DEFINITELY NOT a good father.
This is what prompts the passionate disagreement.
