Meta Breaks, moderation, sobriety...what "this sub is about."

Hey everybody.

Since the New Year and a welcome influx of new members, there has been an uptick in confidently wrong pronouncements of "what this sub is about."

As the lead mod, being confidently wrong is something I reserve only for myself, so I would like to make it clear how we go about choosing content that is inside or outside the rules.

To begin with, I took over the lead mod position four years ago, and I have made exactly one change to the moderation policies in that time, which is to remove posts discussing moderation from people who indicate they are minors. We remove those posts and have a respectful discussion with them about quitting until they are older. If they aren't open to that then we let them participate here as harm reduction, but we owe it to them to talk them through stopping at a young age first.

Again, that's the only change.

Outside of that, I have worked very hard to maintain continuity with the moderation policies that were established from the day of the sub's founding.

Our mission is, to state it as clearly as I can, to help people who are taking a break, figuring out the best way to moderate, or trying to figure out what a healthy relationship with weed looks like for them.

We are not leaves and we are not trees, and we should leave the discussions of quitting for good or smoking without issue completely to them.

But I will say, because this is where most people get it wrong, that contemplating stopping for good, and wanting to talk about it, is part of trying to find a better relationship with smoking.

If you want to smoke and are having problems, and are trying to figure out whether to find a better way or quit completely, then that discussion is fine here. If you then decide to quit for good then we refer you to Leaves.

Relevant to that, there should be absolutely zero "take this to Leaves" or "wtf I'm here because I didn't want to hear this shit" or any variation of those rude BS comments.

If you see something that you don't think should be on the group (like "I'm quitting for good, what's the best way to...") then report it and don't comment. Being rude to other people or trying to be a Petioles mall cop is out of line.

I know people just love when moderators post about the rules, so I suspect I will be greeted as a hero, but if you have any questions I'm happy to answer them if I can, but I am going to filter them before they go up because I'm not an idiot. :-)

Love you all, and I'm happy to have the oppotunity to do my part to help keep this place running.

Discussion Quit my toxic job, bought one last pack of Js

Was told i should share here

Quit my toxic job because if the way i was being treated.

Without disposable income i'm not buying weed anymore.

Im lucky enough to still have a place to stay and enough money saved to get through university (thanks mom and dad)

So im trying to stretch my stash as far as it will go, but I know it won't last until valentines day 2027.

I'm really hoping that this is a "my drinking problem left me" situation.

My head's a mess, but i hope it gets better

Advice Must quit partaking in this BS all I crave is to QUIT & STAY QUIT LIKE FUCK HOW?!

I‘m in agony that I want so badly to stop & yes daily compulsory habitually addictively go & take more hits each new day. In agony that I have gone to extreme complete lengths to stop only to get sucked back in. Theres 2 wolves in my head of hulk strength yet the gross annoying addictive one keeps winning and it’s causing such self loathing/self disappointment. I’m in the middle of my 20s, I already wasted 18-24 using daily wasting my life away & I can’t keep fucking doing this. I refuse to waste the last half of my 20s. I can’t fucking stand how I still go for hits each day yet I don’t even feel any high or buzz or relief anymore.

Just a dumbass agonizing stupid money wasting time wasting soul sucking habit & bandaid & addiction at this point. Not only do I not even feel the nice buzzes anymore but instead infact I feel like SHIT like DEATH. 20s should be prime health instead I rot inside all yr, instead I have chronic daily headaches, instead my respiratory system is like one of fuckin triple my age. Nasty ass snot flooding waterfalling out of my nose & throat every morning for 3-5 hours straight w no relief. Til my nose is red, raw, flaky. Coughing gagging so hard that mucus plugs get barfed up or mucus comes out the fckn nostrils burning me causing me to choke or gag even more. Embarrassed to go on dates or be sexual from the disgusting vibe killing mucus in the throat mid moan outta nowhere or the blowing the snotty nose in front of the date as you didn‘t have a restroom to excuse yourself to. I could go on eternally this bs is fucking depressing me ew ugh.

I need to be setting my life up for my present & future, saving money, learning skills, not letting life fly by/wasting what little I don’t even have fr just to ‘fit’ weed in the budget. I’m in agony that I want nothing more to stop, have tried so many times to stop, stayed stopped at most for 2mos, yet here I am still partaking. Fucking dumb. It goes hit the pen or the j, snot & cough & gag my life away, feel nothing, in comes a headache neckache or couchlock laziness, & it repeats for years. I need to fucking break this hell cycle holy fuck

Discussion It’s Break Day 1 - give me a boost?

Nothing but love for this sub and the people in it - you all have helped me many times over my 1.5 year journey with sobriety and moderation!

I’m in a spot of daily use and increased tolerance rn - while I’m proud to say that every month I’ve had at least a few days not smoking (something that literally never occurred in the 20 years before this past 1.5), it’s too much, I’m not enjoying the highs, I’m feeling a “need” to use it to ease difficulties (rather than just give a nice time) and those are all my signs that it’s time for a real break. Most frustratingly, I’m in the cycle where every MORNING I wake up thinking fuck, I need a break, my head feels fuzzy, my sleep was bad, I’ll definitely start today, no question, and I really FEEL it, WANT it in that moment.

… but come the evening, when I usually smoke, and right on schedule, the after work craving hits. Repeat, repeat. It’s annoying and makes me disappointed in myself, even as I can acknowledge it’s just part of the cycle of addiction.

So, tonight is the night, and putting these words out there is already a form of pre-commitment that will help bolster my resolve 💪🏻. But, kind words and suggestions for how you navigate your day 1s are more than welcome! Hoping for at least a week here, and would be good to do more like a month.

Advice Idea to replace an evening ritual

After sleeping terribly recently, I identified the culprit as weed and was bummed I couldn’t smoke at night anymore because that was already my harm reduction. Background: I stopped smoking during the day as to not lose motivation and focus, decided to only smoke at night when my chores are done, dinner is cooked and im truly ready to end my day and relax, be it spending time meditating outside, reading, playing games/watching a show, doing art, doing yoga, etc you name it, with a joint and a little prayer and gratefulness for the plant medicine. Except night time smoking didn’t fare well with my sleep.
After 2 weeks of bad sleep I decided to call it quits because being tired was unbearable and giving me hella brain fog. So now I’m only smoking socially on Saturday afternoons, unless I have to be somewhere and in that case I remain sober because I do not drive intoxicated.
My problem is that I now miss the little night time ritual I had and my anxiety is high when the night falls (always has been).
I’m not craving weed per se, more so the ritualistic aspect of taking something that makes me relax/creates a break in the loops in my brain/diverts focus on something else than my thoughts without numbing my emotions or my body. I tried sleepy tea but turns out passion flower dropped my BP pretty seriously (PSA) so that is out of the equation too. The occasional glass of wine works but I would rather not incorporate alcohol into a wellness ritual.
Ideas welcome. What do you do to wind down at night and calm down a brain that tends to spiral about the horrors of the world when it gets dark? How did you build a routine that’a not centered on a substance and stuck with it? (I am neurodiverse for context)

Advice Rough Night…

8 days in and the anxiety/freeze is unbearable. my fiancee said to me that every time this happens, i usually revert back to the weed bc it is what calms it down. not this time. no sir.

i’ve tried almost everything. hot baths, dissociating, mindless tv, walks, swimming, sun therapy, reading, literally everything possible and feasible. (and i’m sure my adhd doesn’t help).

what do you do if you get like this? what works? help.

may the next few crazy weeks go smoothly 🙏

Discussion For those who were abstinent for a long time and started using again: Do you regret it?

I’ve been abstinent since January 1 after 16 years of chronic, heavy cannabis use. I smoked from the moment I woke up until I went to bed. Everything became a reason to smoke: to “wake up”, eat, digest, fall asleep, cope with boredom, and so on.
Since quitting, my life has improved somewhat. I feel a little more present, and I noticed a slight improvement in my productivity. That said, I was always a high performer, even when I was under the influence.
Lately, I’ve been considering using cannabis again, but I’m worried that I’ll spiral back into heavy use.
For those who returned to cannabis after a long period of abstinence: do you regret that decision? Do you wish you had remained abstinent? How did things turn out for you?

Edit: Thank you all for your input and support. It has been genuinely valuable, and I wish you all the best.
To answer some questions about my motivation for quitting: Over the past 16 years, I tried several times to quit cannabis completely, but the longest I was ever able to remain abstinent before relapsing was three weeks.
What helped me stay abstinent for the past eight months was a combination of factors. Around the middle of last year, I became increasingly concerned about my throat. I also preferred smoking to consuming edibles, and I didn’t own a dry-herb vaporizer. There were social implications as well, especially because of my children.
I live in a country where cannabis is illegal and stigmatized, although it has become somewhat more tolerated in recent years. I felt embarrassed at the thought of another parent finding out that my children’s father was a pothead. I was also uncomfortable knowing that my neighbors might smell it and assume it was coming from my apartment.
Another reason was that I realized I was getting high whenever I had the opportunity. I work from home and am a high performer, but whenever a work meeting ended, I would immediately take a few hits. If I went out with my family, I would look forward to getting home so I could get high again. I genuinely enjoyed the feeling, but it had become too much. The fact that my children were starting to ask questions about my habit made me uncomfortable, so I quit.
I still experience cravings at least once a day, and it’s frustrating. Rainy days trigger me the most. I used to love sitting on my balcony, listening to the rain while smoking a joint.
I don’t plan to start smoking again. At one point, I considered saving up for a dry-herb vaporizer because I thought it would reduce the smell, eliminate the worry that people might realize I was smoking, and be easier on my throat and lungs. But after reading some of the comments here, I started wondering: “What would be the point?”
It was difficult to remain abstinent at first, and I still experience cravings. Why return to the habit if I’m not confident I can moderate my use? Honestly, I don’t think I could (especially with a vaporizer, since it would make using so convenient)
So I’m going to continue abstaining for now. Hopefully, I’ll remain abstinent forever, although I’m not completely sure yet

Discussion Day 8 of 30 day break

I feel beyond dysregulated. I work with kids with special needs and mental health diagnoses. I have successfully done these 8 days but yesterday and today all I want is to take a few hits. It feels like my medicine. I’m angry, enraged and sick of people being “proud” of me. I was completely alone on Saturday, did nothing but rot and didn’t crave it once. I’ve been so busy yesterday and today and all I want is to smoke.

Advice Best way to switch to edibles from carts

Discussion On day 3 still going strong!

I’ve been a daily cart user for 4-5 years now (I’m
20) and am quitting cold turkey for a second time. I made it a couple months before then convinced myself I can smoke in moderation, but Ive shown I can’t handle moderation and went back to hitting the pen constantly.

The nausea is pretty bad and I’ve had a hard time keeping things down. Yesterday all I ate was a bowl of rice and nothing the day before. I’ve been pretty irritable (less patience, more road rage lol) so I try to just keep to myself and not let outside disturbances bother me, and the cravings have definitely subsided even though I often think about smoking when I usually would be like in the mornings or after my boyfriend goes to work. I just tell my brain it’s not an option and that I don’t need to chase the next high, just let my dopamine receptors return to normal and accept I won’t find as much enjoyment in things. Sleeping has been okay, I’ve been taking melatonin and L-theanine before bed and struggle to fall asleep, but when I do I’m wiped out. Dreams are coming back too. Anyways hopefully the brain fog clears up over time and I can return to regular enjoyment without needing the yart, thanks for reading :)

Discussion Has weed gotten more anxiety-inducing for anyone else over time?

I used to actually enjoy smoking, but lately it feels like my brain completely changes once I get high. Today I took 2 puffs after going 6+ hours without smoking and got ridiculously anxious. Heart felt weird, stomach felt off, and suddenly I was analyzing every little thing I was feeling.
It’s weird because I don’t really have that problem when I’m sober. I actually feel pretty normal.
I’m curious if anyone else went from enjoying weed to eventually finding that it just made them uncomfortable or anxious. Did your reaction to it change over time?

Discussion ran out of carts today. bought edibles instead. it might not seem like it but this is a major win for me!

i have been using cannabis daily for about 9 years. i did edibles at first, then switched to vaping cartridges in 2021 because i was dealing with mental health issues and the edibles just weren’t cutting it. i didn’t know it when i started, but carts are sooo addictive for me and my tolerance has skyrocketed since then.

im finally starting to feel the effects of the vaping on my lungs. plus one of my cats now has asthma, and even though i dont vape around my cats (i go in the bathroom where they aren’t allowed), im worried somehow the vaping is affecting him. i feel awful about this but im grateful to have a really good reason to quit. but i still haven’t kicked it completely.

today however i was out of carts so i went to the dispensary, but instead of getting more carts, i just got a bunch of edibles instead. eventually the goal is to quit entirely (for a little while at least), but im going to ween myself off so withdrawal is not as bad.

thanks to this community for being an inspiration! i joined years ago but haven’t actually done anything until now, but reading posts here has helped me stay hopeful. we got this!

Discussion ~330 days. Advice needed.

I want other peoples perspectives on my situation because I want to maybe realize something I've been missing, and hence, be able to optimize my life.

I got out of a relationship gone sour in March, and ever since, I threw myself into work. I work crazy hours, everyday all week. I've had some 15, maybe 16 days off this year total.

I quit coffee, eating sweet and fried crap, and PMO. Obviously I stopped vaping flower as well, almost a year ago now. I picked up exercise and I'm quite obsessed about it, months now.

"Good for you", you might think. I wouldn't disagree. But it seems to me like I just replaced all those things with other compulsions. Much healthier and much more productive ones, to be sure, but I'd be lying if I said I'm living life.

"And you're doing the same, trying to optimize your life by asking this question". Okay, so like, what' would you advise? I've always lived alone but my ex used to be different, awesome, and amazing. Then she changed and I had no choice but to end things.

I vaped dry flower for a few months back in 2024 and 2025. It helped me so much. With back pain, and stuff I think they call autism or something. Idk, I never really inquired. It was like being taken out of the middle of a fish market in Vietnam, with vendors screaming, banging pans, flies buzzing around, cars and motorcycles honking, and lights flashing, all together like a nauseating, overwhelming assault on all senses to all still, quiet, and focused place of serenity and introspective wonder.

In great short.

If nothing changes, I'll probably die after some 2 or 3 decades more like that, grinding until my dying breath, whatever it is I end up doing at that time, and not living.

I kinda got used to the fish market. It stinks. I'd like to get out more, open myself up, meet new people, and stop being alone. I get matches on the apps but in the end it's crap that goes nowhere. I'm not the kind of person who treats prospective partners like a can of pop. I live in a small town and I have a cat to look after which kinda ties me down, on top of obviously the extended working hours every day.

Sometimes I wish I could just vape again. It helps with a lot of things. But then I remember I always ended up vaping everyday all day.

I think that's idea enough. If anyone has advice, I'd be grateful.

Discussion Dreams

Day 10 of quitting after daily smoking of around 3g for 3 years. Dreams have arrived in force. I know this is normal but how long should I reasonably expect before they calm down? Online I have read up to 45 days - have I got another month of this?

Discussion When you're in illegal country people see you either as "normal" or straight up crackhead, no in between.

It's just so lonely. People find out you smoke pot sometimes and they immediately assume you're a shady junkie who will get them in trouble. I'm just a normal human being with a family, job and friends who happened to cope with life in that way. I never carry anything illegal around town and there's like 99% chance that you'll never see me stoned, it's only for my closest friends or nights alone with my cats. But when government puts weed in the same illegal category as meth, it's very hard to make people believe that I'm not gonna sell their kidney to buy some drugs lmao.

Discussion Three Weeks of No Weed

I'm new to this subreddit, so I hope this post is allowed. I stopped smoking three weeks ago in hopes to find a better job. But the ahedonia is hitting hard. I didn't enjoy doing things anymore, be it drawing, writing, reading is still kinda fun. But even being intimate with my partner isn't as fun, since we both smoked together. How long has this phase lasted for you guys? Any tips for getting through it?

Advice Advice on withdrawal?

For context, I’m 18 f and have been smoking on and off (mostly on) daily for about 3-4 years. I know it wasn’t the best decision to start that early in the first place, but I can’t go back now. My brain has been feeling 3 feet thick the last year or so and I know it’s doing more harm than good for me. It took a lotttt of willpower to even make the choice to take a break since I use it for sleep. I’m 3 days in to not smoking and the headaches I wake up with are insane. I go from freezing cold with literal goosebumps to sweating in 5 minutes. I know time will help but damn this rough lmao. Very hard to not just grab the pen but I want to go a month minimum and see how I feel from there. Any and all advice is appreciated:)

Discussion Threw carts away and not sure what to do with myself now

I’ve smoked for about 5 years straight now since I was 15 (I’m 20F), only had about 2 breaks. I can’t believe it’s gotten to this point. I was able to stop for about 2 months and that was the most progress I ever made, but I ended up buying another cart and telling myself I’d do it in moderation, and now here we are again. I’ve got back into the habit of hitting my cart the moment I wake up, and periodically throughout the day. Weed has worsened my social anxiety and motivation factor in general, and I don’t even feel high anymore. After a long mental battle I threw my stuff out this morning and I really want to quit for good, last time I stopped getting high everything agitated me and I was depressed for weeks, horrible nightmares . It just helps knowing I’m not alone and others struggle too. I’m dreading having to face my feelings without weed to numb the pain, but I just want to be free of being so fucking dependent for so long

Discussion Days long panic.

i quit vaping two weeks ago, and then all of a sudden, weed turned on me. i got too high the other night and ever since then i've just been extremely panicky and depressed. Haven't smoked since. Fine with quitting because the experience and the residual effects are extremely traumatizing. next level. like i feel like a completely different person and my life outlook is very bleak cause it feels like it'll stay this way forever. I went to a behavioral health urgent care, and they prescribed me Clonodine, which isn't a psychiatric medication... if anyone has any tips or anything to say about the medication please tune in.

Discussion 25 day T break complete, struggling after mini binge

Hello all. I first started smoking at 16/17 with thc carts. By 18 I was smoking thc carts 24/7 till nearly 20 (I'm 20 now) with the exception of a few month breaks. In feb I ditched carts for an Xmax dry herb vape and hit that everyday instead.

Anyways long story short at the end of July I tried a cart again used it in 3 days n then took a 25 day T break in aims for moderation.

After the 25 days I bought a 3.5 - my dealer doesn't sell less. I had a fat blunt with my friend, watched a storm under a tarp outside - it was fucking beautiful.

The next day ugh, cravings. I loaded up 3 dif bowls on the xmax and called it a day. I was progressively feeling them less and less.

Now today, I have cravings like hell. Debating selling the xmax as its way too convenient. Haven't had any yet but I don't really trust myself right now. Help?

Discussion How can I make homemade THC capsules kick in more predictably? Sometimes 1h, sometimes 4–5h

I quit smoking/vaping about a month ago and switched to edibles because I want to stay away from inhaling anything.

I’ve been making cannabis capsules with infused coconut oil. I decarb at 115°C/240°F for ~40 min, then infuse 10g flower into 50ml coconut oil. Based on my calculations, each capsule is around 35mg THC.

Two caps gets me roughly where I want to be.
The problem is the onset is wildly inconsistent.
I’ve started logging the time I take them and what/when I eat. A few examples:

Morning/noon: 2 caps + light breakfast (yoghurt, Weetabix, coffee) → noticeable after ~2h, peak around 3–3.5h.
Noon: 2 caps + 3 sandwiches → noticeable after ~1h, peak after 2–3h.
Another noon: 2 caps + lecithin → noticeable after ~1–1.5h, peak around 2h.
Evening: 2 caps + lecithin at 19:45 → absolutely nothing at 22:40, then suddenly around 23:40 I’m at an 8/10.

I’ve even had evening doses where I barely noticed anything, only to wake up the next day still buzzed, so I’m guessing they kicked in extremely late during the night.

The pattern I’m sort of seeing is that daytime doses often kick in within 1–2h, while evening doses can randomly take 4+ hours. Taking them ~15 min before dinner doesn’t seem to fix it.

I bought lecithin and plan to add it directly to my next batch. I’m also wondering about food: would taking the capsules with a small/light meal be more predictable than taking them fasted or with a large meal, even though the THC is already infused into coconut oil?

For people experienced with homemade capsules: is there anything you’ve found that makes the onset more consistent? Meal size/timing, fat content, lecithin, timing since previous meal, preparation method, etc.?

I’d mainly like to make the timing more predictable.
Any tips or experiences appreciated!

Discussion I don't know what to do with myself anymore, and that's why I think I turn to weed.

I'm a very lonely person. I have friends, most of them have shifted from in-person relationships to virtual as we found our different paths and homes. I have two cats who I love more than anything.

But I spend so much time alone. And I think the weed works for me in a hypothetical where I am alone for the night and just want to play video games. The problem is that's like 90% of my nights. So I abuse it, I use, use, use. And it numbs me and fries me for when I'm not using. Which makes me want to use more to escaoe the numbness.

An obvious solution is to go out more. It's hard. I can't drive in a town where you really do need a car. I have some local friends, but most of them I don't connect with on a deeper level. I feel that I'm experiencing some degree of social isolation - and the irony is my job is in community work and bringing people together. I do that, I bring people together for social events, but I don't really get to partake and enjoy them. Makes my loneliness feel even worse.

I have been off weed for about a week now and my free time has mostly been video games, playing with my cats, and resting. And man does it get old. I kind of want to go out tomorrow to buy some, but I am worried I will just go back to that dark place where I abuse it. Looking for advice honestly. On how to balance things without spiraling out of control.

Discussion Please Help 🙏. Who has delt with D8 withdrawal? How long did it last ? How much were you using ?

Please don’t come here to gaslight me, I’m watching someone go through severe withdrawal symptoms from stoping D8 edibles @ around 400mg/day for 3 months. They are in complete misery, no sleep, vomiting , diarrhea, severe nausea, fatigue and anxiety. The D8 was from a reputable company. 🙏Please only respond with answers to the questions, don’t fill this up with nonsense please.

Update: He was able to get a low thc (D9 instead of D8), high cbd edible. 15mg ended his most of symptoms within one hour. This eliminates CHS as a possible cause for this. He was definitely experiencing a physical withdrawal that subsided with a low dose of D9 and CBD. Now the question is : does tapering work ? Or does it restart the process all over ?
