[META] Shipping, Responsibility, and Risk FAQ

Hello all you metal stackers/collectors,

tl;dr - nope, this is too important, you are going to need to read and understand it.

It seems our last attempt to clarify shipping and liability sparked more confusion than clarity. So let’s fix that.

Let us get one thing perfectly clear. We are not here to dick-tate the terms of your private sale.

However, we are here to make sure some things get discussed in negotiating that sale. Too many sales have happened under the silent assumption that the buyer automatically eats 100% of the risk once a package is dropped off. Nowhere in our rules does it state that. For a great many, liability and risk were not really discussed much at all in the sale negotiation process. Lets make it part of the process.

We also wanted to address what we consider to be properly packaged metal and be very clear that improper metal packaging will place 100% of the liability for lost, stolen, or damaged shipments on the seller. We cannot control the post office, but we can make it damn hard for them to steal the shiny and damn easy for them to deliver.

Do I have to take 50% liability for my shipped packages?

No. But you must have the discussion of liability with each and every person you transact with or simply accept the default 50/50 liability. Editable disclaimers in your posts are not enough. Have the discussion in your chat and come to agreement. We do recommend persistent messages to ensure your chat stays intact.

Do I have to offer insurance or registered mail?

No, offering insurance or registered mail is not required.

We think it's a great idea for large purchases, but not a requirement.

The terms you and your buyer agree to in your negotiations will be the terms of the sale. Don't feel like discussing liability? 50/50 is not a bad thing and will be assumed if dispute resolution is needed.

For smaller sales, if insurance or registered mail doesn’t make sense, that’s fine — as long as both sides agree in chat about who carries the shipping risk. Absent an agreement, the 50/50 default is assumed.

Do I need a disclaimer in my post?

No. They are not binding because they are editable. Your deal made in chat is the way. But, if you want to let your buyers know where your head is at when it comes to a deal a disclaimer makes a lot of sense.

Why can't I use a bubble mailer?

You can. Our shipping guidelines were misinterpreted and will be updated in the final wiki guide.

A PAPER bubble mailer was meant to be an example of flimsy packaging.

Ultimately proper packaging should not be flimsy or easily torn open. There are some bubble mailers that are completely bullet-proof and a great choice. Padded Flat Rate Mailers are a great outer package and often used and will continue to be a great choice.

Here are some questions to ask yourself when packaging:

  1. Does it jingle or rattle?
  2. Can this be opened and contents removed a few minutes or less without tools?
  3. Will it survive getting wet?
  4. Does it scream "steal me?"
  5. Is this packaged in a way that protects the contents from being damaged?
  6. Did I include an inner label and make sure the outer one won’t smear or fade?

Can I be held liable for a package that shows up empty even if my buyer agreed to full liability?

Yes, if you didn't properly package the metal and you didn't get your buyer to agree to a poorly packaged shipment then you are 100% responsible.

Best practice: send a photo of your packed box and label in chat, have the buyer confirm it looks good and the address is correct, then ship.

When is a package officially "accepted" by USPS?

If you have a clerk at the counter scan your package on the scale and provide you a receipt, it is immediately "accepted" by the USPS for insurance and liability purposes. This method is highly recommended!

Using a kiosk or dropping it in a provided bin is a bit less than ideal. It does not officially scan a package as "accepted" and does not provide a weight for you at drop-off. It is possible to scan a label and never drop the package in the bin.

After a kiosk or bin drop-off, the next scan that shows up in tracking is the "acceptance" scan. A seller who uses a kiosk or drop bin is 100% liable until that first "acceptance" scan. After that, negotiated terms are in play.

Does "delivered" always mean delivered? And the scammers will win now

Nope.

We can (and often do) verify with USPS tracking data — package weights, photos, even GPS logs — to figure out what really happened. You can do this too with the right postal contact.

Does it always work? No.

Does it work most of the time? Yep — about 99%.

If it turns out a porch pirate swiped it, that’s 100% buyer liability.

Have scammers been caught? You bet. Some are facing federal investigations of mail fraud right now.

We do not recommend refunds as a result of dispute resolution until this internal tracking investigation is complete.

What does this mean for ship first deals?

These guidelines are the same for a ship first deal. It is expected that the shipper will properly package and document their package (you vets in the trenches would be well-advised to offer help and packing advice).

It is also expected that a negotiation of liability takes place in the chat. In absence of a negotiated deal, the 50/50 split responsibility rule is in full effect.

Who takes responsibility in a middlman assisted deal?

The middlemen are required to provide you terms for using their service. The terms the middleman, buyer, and seller agree to will take precedence in these sales. A Middleman is fully expected to follow packaging guidelines as part of this process.

What happens if something goes wrong with a shipment?

Ultimately, just like your sale, if both parties are able to resolve this in a mutually agreeable way, mods are not going to step in and stop you. If mutual agreement cannot be reached then we are available to help. If sub rules are found to be broken it can lead to consequences on a case by case basis as well as negative or neutral feedback.

Have bought some silver from the communitiy and now am looking to make my first real gold purchase. Very specifically a 2012 1oz proof gold eagle coin. This is going to be a very sentimental coin for me as it was released the day we brought my son home from the Hospital when he was born. A raw coin is preferred as this will be embedded with his Urn. We lost him about 5 weeks ago to suicide and I am making a plaque for him. As close to spot as we can get would be preferred but I understand this coin does carry a premium. Payment is cashapp or venmo. Looking to purchase from a reputable member of the community as this is a large purchase for me.

Bought these years ago from a large online retailer. Wish I had bought more 😂 Not sure why the one case says 1/2oz bricks. They are stamped 1oz as you can see.

NEW ITEMS [WTS] New countries joining the antique silver list with some new items; England and China

Hello everyone,

Trying again on the antique sterling, but I’ve added some new items. The proof pic is just a single pic, but check out the links for each individual item to see more details.

The story: All items were purchased from antique dealers around the country. All items are “as found.” This means I believe them to be authentic, original pieces and not modern reproductions. If you have any information to the contrary or to provide better details about a date or identification, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Offers: Due to the age of these items, most are not priced relative to melt. I will consider ANY offers that respect the age and historic value of the items on top of their intrinsic metal value. Offers of melt will not be considered, except for the Thai makeup compact. In general, I have tried to price these items around or significantly below comps. All prices include insured shipping.

ITEM 1: 800 purity peacock weighing 242g. Based on comparable listings, this is a German Hanau production made in the early 1900s. It has a hollow body, and there was a small repair on the tail that is visible from the underside and was well covered on the top. Based on how well the details were etched above it, the repair might even have been done at the time it was made. Dimensions are about 5.5" tall by about 12" long. Asking $1,200.

ITEM 2: 999 purity Korean cloisonné bowl weighing 367.5g. These bowls are highly collectible, and this one is beautifully carved and worked. No maker's mark that I can see, but it is marked with Ag999순은. Asking $1,500.

ITEM 3: 925 purity “Whiting Davis mesh bag” weighing 148.9g. No imperfections in the links as far as I can tell. The clasp has small round blue sapphire cabs on it. This purse is deceptively heavy for its size. A classic early 19th century item. Asking $600.

ITEM 4: 950 purity Meiji? era Japanese cigarette case depicting the 7 deities weighing 191.6g. There is a slight defect with one of the clasps, so it only closes on one side. The art is signed based on AI’s translation of the kanji, but the hand-carving of the first two characters is past its ability to decipher. If anyone recognizes or can read the mark, please let me know what it is. Asking $850.

ITEM 5: A 950 purity silver French military medal weighing 17.3g. This one features the “Algérie” and “Forces Françaises en Allemagne” bars. Asking $75.

ITEM 6: 925 purity Hecho en Mexico ALC Guadalajara belt buckle weighing 54.9g. Buckle features a longhorn with red stone or glass eyes. Asking $200.

ITEM 7: 925 purity Siam niello makeup compact. Gross weight is 119.1g, but without the mirror it is 108.4g. The item is in very good condition, with the artwork on both sides depicting possibly Wat Arun and the traditional warrior. Asking $235.

ITEM 8: 900 purity Egyptian miniature pots weighing 120.5g. The marks are tiny, but the Arabic 900 is pretty clear. I believe the rest should be a symbol, but I can’t see what it is. I believe these are miniature bean pots? If anyone has any additional information, I’d love to hear it. Asking $450 for the pair.

NEW ITEMS
ITEM 9: A sterling fountain/ball point pen set. Fountain pen has a 14k nib. Comes in an original Parker box, but I cannot guarantee that it is the box original to this set. Barrel weight is 29.1g; I am guessing 1g for the pen nib. I cannot guarantee that these pens will write, but to my untrained eye, it looks like they only need to have the ink cartridges changed out. Asking $250.

ITEM 10: 925 fully-hallmarked British desktop lighter weighing 163g minus the top lighter portion. I cannot tell if there is any extra non-silver metal in the base, but the shell is quite thick and extremely sturdy. When I tap on the bottom, it feels quite solid although there is a thin layer of cork? glued down. This item was apparently a 25th anniversary gift based on its inscription. The bottom hallmarks are RC, London Sterling 1961? I will leave the product name to your creative guesses since the critical first letter is missing…Asking $500

ITEM 11: 925 purity Mexican shot glass set. Sterling liners and sterling tray. The weight is for the sterling liners and the tray minus all glass. It does not include the handle which remained attached to the glass when I weighed it. 105g. Asking $375

ITEM 12: 925 Chinese tea pot with the eight deities on it. Weight is 131.5g. I did manage to find a very similar piece with different hallmarks attributed to the 19th century. Mine is missing the lid, however. Asking $600.

TRADES: Although I am not really looking for any trades...I was recently introduced to the world of netsuke and other Edo/Qing/Meiji carvings. After recently losing some amazing early 20th century (or early) Japanese carvings at an online auction, I have a bit of a hankering to see what’s out there. I'd strongly prefer to sell outright, BUT…if someone has a collection of antique east Asian carvings that they don’t know what to do with AND if they like what I’m selling, I would consider a trade toward the premium on my asking prices. (e.g. If an item’s melt is $200 and I’m asking $300, I would consider a trade for the $100 premium.)

My primary considerations are:
1) I don’t have much interest in mid 20th century tourism or Western export pieces; 
2) I don’t have any interest at all in modern resin/reproduction pieces; 
3) I’m only really considering genuine antique articles that show the effect of years of use. I love antiques because they tell a story of history and world culture…the export stuff can be nice but it’s just not on the same level. 
4) I’d only consider it if a piece really grabs my eye or has a really cool story attached to it.

3x 1oz 2018 APMEX "Year of the Dog" Silver Bars. In sleeves. Beautiful bars, one of my favorite designs. I do prefer if all three are bought at once, but I can split them if necessary. If bought all at once, price will be $200. If bought individually, price will be $70 each. SOLD

2x 1oz Toned Silver Bars. As seen in the pics, these are very toned. Still good bars, but they don't have the best toning I've seen. Since one of these looks like it might've even been tested with oxidizers on the rear, I'm shooting a below-spot price on these. I don't know how natural the tone on these actually is. $55 each. Below spot. SOLD

1x 1oz 2003 Toned Silver Eagle. Also as seen in the pics, this is another quite toned piece. Definitely a bit better toning than the bars, but still not the cleanest toning ever. In circulated condition but still in a pretty good shape, not many dings or scratches. $65. SOLD
