Tariffs

Hey all. This may be more directed to canadian potters but all are welcomed to chime in.
Does anyone know if supplies like glazes,clays,tools etc will go up due to the tariff war between canada and usa? canada is going to impose tariffs on usa in just over a week. I havent read anywhere if brands such as mayco,amaco,coyote,mudtools etc will go up due to this.
Anyone got any info?

Where abouts are you? I am in the prairies and can easily get plainsman clay, which is Canadian. Most their mines too i believe.

Tuckers is also Canadian i think.

Pottery Supply House out of Ontario also makes clay and glazes in Canada. Sounding Stone in Winnipeg also makes glazes. Both ship Canada-wide.

Im hours away from PSH or tuckers. Shipping clay is reaaaally expensive. I can buy from local studios but they charge at least 100% markup

Shipping is more cost effective for glazes, yes . I just wanted to mention all the options. I’m in Alberta and my local ceramics shop stocks them all, though I mainly use Plainsman.

They already have. The cause is more complex than tariffs though. Many of the minerals and clays which go into commercial glazes are either running out (like EPK) or are also the target of the tech/A.I./EV boom like lithium, cobalt, zirconia, etc.

Yeah, our studio has had to change a bunch of house glaze recipes due to mine closures or lack of availability.

Manufactured clay is still considered a raw material, so there are no duties/tariffs on clay or other basic raw materials. Cost is going up because of shipping / manufacturing costs increase / material changes / etc. raw materials like lithium, cobalt and other heavy metals are also increasing in cost.

Why did i forget them😑thanks for the reminder! I recently found a company called solar glazes out on the east coast.
