Ah. At the time it was the level clear sound from Super Mario World. Basically this but recorded to a cassette tape and then fed back into an SGI machine that was in one of the labs.
I guess I could have fed it into the actual Linux box at the time, but I had yet to figure out how to record line in on Linux and I was just more used to the SGI machine at the time.

I work for a company that makes traffic/infrastructure products, and one of our software teams has a literal traffic light in their space. When tests on the build server fail, it's red, yellow when running, green when everything passes.
7
u/Smart_Whereas_9296 11h ago
You can do this with a stream deck easily, have it colour the buttons based on Claude events, and you get the ability to just push a button to focus on the window.

55
25
u/bwwatr 10h ago
To be able to display enough traffic lights, and to free you of a specific fixed traffic light structure, you should devise a large grid of tiny, square, software controlled picture elements, that can each take on arbitrary colours and in the large, display any image you desire.
8
u/Sheerkal 10h ago
Hmmm... In order to ease assembly of so many small traffic lights, you may consider having your agents design a machine to assemble this grid "display". /s

Stack lights (also known as signal tower lights, indicator lights, andon lights, warning lights, industrial signal lights, or tower lights)
You probably could have guessed a name and would have gotten at least one of them.
→ More replies (1)19
u/Seth_Hu 10h ago
Stack light would fit really well, technically the meaning of green and yellow light should be reversed from the image, but shouldn't be too difficult to get used to
6
3
u/BaaaBaaaBlackSheep 8h ago
Yeah, in OPs picture the traffic light is more geared for the person putting in input as opposed to the machine itself. Green means user can take action.
Proper implementation of the stack light would treat Claude like a factory line, which is somewhat appropriate.
8
u/Numerous-Lock-8117 9h ago
Bro I thought these only exist in Satisfactory. TIL
14
u/mgt-kuradal 9h ago
You will find literally hundreds of these lights in just about any factory. There are even companies that do pretty in-depth data tracking based on the light stack.

I want to see them use it with high specificity, like creating a bunch of DTOs, refactor something according to other changes, ... the boring typing work. 71
u/Dr4g0ss 11h ago
At my fully remote job, they are all-in on vibecoding. When I say all-in, I mean ALL THE FUCK IN. I don't know what the team's workflow is but I've resorted to adding to my claude.md instructions along the lines of "implementation is done as a multi-step process: first a subagent implements, then a new fresh subagent does a review, then a third fixes. Finally, use the playwright mcp to click through the UI and verify that everything works as it should". So each ticket or feature passes through this "loop" and the final manual click through catches any glaring issues.
That being said, code quality is likely nonexistent, but I am being very underpaid for all the things they're having me "work" on, so I just don't really care. I am a massive larper on our daily standups and usually just ask claude before them "hey remind me what I worked on yesterday by scanning all my commits and PRs." I genuinely have no idea what I otherwise worked on if it was tickets assigned to me. If I'm tasked with something that I need to describe to claude, then I vaguely know how it implemented it.
I use the idle time between prompts to read, watch tv shows, or do some actual manual programming on personal projects.
72
12
25
u/Milkshakes00 11h ago
Careful of the personal project programming. You're doing it on company time, and that brings dangers to your project.
26
u/Dr4g0ss 10h ago
Thanks for the heads up but there's no risk for that at my current employer.
I'm technically not even employed because contracts mean nothing apparently: I practically begged them for us to sign it so that I have the legal paper trail, but they just... didn't really care. I realize how this sounds but without getting into the laws of my country: I'm legally in the clear and it's mostly in my favor this way.
10
u/Milkshakes00 10h ago
All good then! Just wanted to make sure you were aware.
Everything in the US has been moving towards contracts too, which is such horse shit it's insane.
5
u/Dr4g0ss 10h ago
I appreciate the looking out!
And yeah it sucks that it's never actual employment. Idk how it works in the US but you don't get any kind of health insurance if you're only a contractor here, you are considered unemployed in the face of the government. Thankfully I'm young enough that I qualify for young-person health insurance, otherwise I'd have to apply each month to get unemployed insurance.
3
u/reventlov 4h ago
In the US you don't get any kind of health insurance as a contractor.
You also don't get any kind of health insurance for being young, or for being unemployed.
If you can fill out a ridiculous amount of paperwork, you can get (kind of terrible) health insurance (Medicaid) for being very very poor, but if you're getting paid for contract work you almost certainly don't qualify.
You can buy private health insurance through the ACA market, which is subsidized based on your income. EXCEPT that in about half the states there is a gap where you make too much to qualify for Medicaid, but not enough(!) to qualify for ACA subsidies, in which case the very cheapest ACA plan probably costs about 50% of your income, and also doesn't cover much.

I am trying to. Good jobs are hard to come by where I'm at and I don't have easy access to the EU job market, unfortunately.
Nice to see that I'm not alone on this earth that still enjoy and does manual coding
Passion for software engineering, and computer science in general, is why I went and got a degree after all. I don't want that part of me to die off due to the industry shifting gears this much. I've regressed a lot particularly because of AI, so I'm relearning a ton of stuff right now and it's as fun as it always was! And frustrating but in a good way :D
5
u/ErZicky 9h ago
I hear you, I wish you good luck. It took me almost 2 year to finally find a job in an EU country that allowed to me to relocate.
As for the personal projects I agree with you, a couple days ago I created a new feature from scratch without AI or internet beyond searching docs. And I completely forgotten how good it feeled to be the one creating something.
2
u/BalkrishanS 4h ago
I would be out of my depth here as a unemployed student rn but I too recently returned to coding manually, specifically with some pico-8 game development and man is it fun to code again. I kinda lost passion for a while due to just treating as a career thing that i just kinda have to do and stuff ig and it's been just something I dread doing.

8
u/ErZicky 8h ago
Amen, i Remember when Devs complained constantly that meeting/spreadsheets ecc took time from the fun part and they just wanted to be left alone coding.
Now seems like no one actually wanted to code in the first place, I don't understand
5
u/SpicaGenovese 8h ago
I'm not going to talk like I don't use it, because I do, and I'm not some wizard programmer, but if I know what I need to do, why would I bother using it to do a coding task?? I want to whiteboard that shit out with someone to make sure it's nice, then have at it.

u/Peon-Hyjal 7h ago
A lot of people are in the industry not because of their enjoyment of coding, but because of the pay. The coding just gets in the way of that, so anything they can do to make that easier they'll take.

No idea about your job but my job is now to use AI to do my old job, it is not a preference, it is this way per upper mgmt request.
I am pretty sure they monitor token usage for outliers, both up and down.
14
u/imstillarookie 9h ago
Management here is super transparent about it. we even have a dashboard that tracks usage and, I shit you not, it tracks “line of code edited” and “number of PRs opened”.
This caused everything here is AI generated because we’re paranoid about being low token users; JIRA stories/defects, documentation, PR description/code change request/replies. Even posting to slack using MCP.
This isn’t some koolAId start up, it’s a company with over 5,000 employees with international offices and pays 6 figures USD.
6
u/CommissionCharming35 8h ago
Okay, keep letting your skills atrophy instead of finding a real job again.
3
u/TalShar 5h ago
My sibling in C, they didn't even say how they were using it. These agents are incredibly helpful when doing repetitive actions or refactors. We still have to know what we are doing and flex those skills, because these things are still basically super-green junior devs that can Google problems using the "I'm Feeling Lucky" option, and thus need to be corrected and reined in frequently.
There are absolutely vibe coders who are outsourcing all thought, but there's a gradient between that and (justifiably) shooting the printer because it made a weird sound.
2
u/Suitch 4h ago
Agreed. I am using AI almost 100% of the time, but I am training it to do everything correctly which means constantly harping on it like a junior that won’t learn easily.
‘What do you mean 76 files were changed for the simple edit? I’m not reading that diff; make the minimal change.’
But realistically, it makes legacy code archaeology WAY better. I never wanted to read the legacy code. Taking that away and giving it to a clanker that is actually really good at reading and understanding code if it is given the full stack is beautiful to me. It detangles spaghetti way better than I ever did.
2
u/Not-the-best-name 1h ago
I am thankful for this thread because this is now my job too and I don't mind it. I spend my time coding in prompts and solving issues with significantly less frustration than before. I am thankful for 10 years of coding experience by hand so that I know what to tell the thing to do and not get jealous of what it's doing, but man Iam happy I don't have to do it.
11
u/Tango00090 11h ago
That would work for one session only, if you need multiple it’s better to buy programmable rgb light panels
37
u/tbhaxor 11h ago
Or should be like
red - work in progress (like in OT)
yellow - waiting
green - all task done
38
u/_TheForgeMaster 11h ago
Going off industrial standards, add a blue light
Green - working
Blue - complete, awaiting new instruction
Yellow - awaiting user input
Red - Out of tokens, critical or connectivity error
7
u/reddit_user33 9h ago
Blue should be reset if we're following automation standards. Or at least in my neck of the woods if means that. So blue could mean the context window is too large, compaction/new session required.
Waiting for a new instruction and waiting for user input is the same difference in my mind.

Delproducts 907241 ($70), (you may need an extension cable) then wire it up to Claude Code hooks (which fire on lifecycle events)
The events are "UserPromptSubmit" "Notification" and "Stop" (where "Stop" → green of course). Put the hooks in your `settings.json` file where it runs a command to change the light color. There are links to example applications in the pdf manual.
Hopefully that's enough to get you going.
