I love progression fantasy, but one thing I’ve always wanted to see more of is progression that isn’t just about making the numbers go up.

That became one of the ideas behind *Legacy Code*.

My protagonist does get stronger. There are stats, skills, abilities, system rewards, and increasingly dangerous enemies.

But a lot of the time, the most important thing she gains isn’t raw power.

In every world, she inherits the memories of a different life. What she gets from them might be survival skills, combat experience, politics, strategy, medicine, or simply knowledge that lets her see a problem differently.

Sometimes the answer is fighting ancient beasts.

Sometimes it’s using a talisman to burn down half an emperor’s palace.

Sometimes it’s figuring out which side of a political conflict to push, and how far.

And sometimes, surviving an apocalyptic world might depend on something she learned in a life that ended centuries ago.

I also really wanted to write a competent female protagonist who can be ruthless when she needs to be without turning into an emotionless murder machine. Gu Zhiwei cares about people. Occasionally, that makes her life considerably harder.

*Legacy Code* is a multi-world LitRPG / progression fantasy with survival, mystery, political strategy, and a larger mystery connecting the different worlds.

If that sounds like your kind of thing, it’s currently on Royal Road:

Hey all!

Let me start my shill with the what-to-expect part:

-Weak to strong LitRPG in a Western cultivation world
-Action-packed adventures with a void assassin
-Skill gathering, evolving, and merging
-Smart and competent MC
-Vast scope spanning across the multiverse
-No harem
-This is a rewrite of an old story. Book 1&2 complete.

If these sound like something you might enjoy, check out my story, Voidwalker.

Here is the blurb:

Turns out, leading a gang of scavenger kids during the AI wars, or becoming a top-tier assassin and founding a notorious crime organization in a VRMMO, isn’t as wild as it gets. You can always sign up for an outer-world expedition and end up in a cultivation world.

Or so Ethan learned.

Not your typical xianxia either. Big clans and powerful sects hold sway, but nations answer to councils and monarchies. High-fantasy creatures roam the land, and inheritance sites coexist with dungeons that spawn monsters.

Worse yet, in a world where talent is essential, Ethan barely qualifies to cultivate. Still, it's not enough to stop him. While others meditate for decades, he hunts, using his wits, instincts sharpened by thousands of kills, and an AI chip that twists cultivation into something closer to a game.

Then a single lie gets out of hand. What should’ve been a casual bluff becomes a multiversal rumor, drawing young prodigies from higher realms straight into Elisium: some hungry for blood, others bound by duty. Now Ethan must carve a path through the chaos he unleashed. Not that he minds. After all, chaos has a habit of hiding opportunity.

Jett Fulgen - Superhero Progression Fantasy / LitRPG

This series has a lot of spice. Seriously, the MC has an ability that lets spicy food rejuvenate him, and he eventually learns to share the effect with his team. Also, his spirit companion is a condescending talking chili pepper. So much spice.

There is no explicit sexual content, and no harem. Why would you think otherwise?

The story itself is character-first weak-to-strong progression: Jett inherits the power of the one-of-a-kind Fire Guardian, gets pulled into a corporation that trains and licenses sorcerers, and has to figure out what kind of hero he wants to become while dealing with public scrutiny, team dynamics, corporate pressure, and increasingly dangerous enemies.

Books 1 and 2 are complete, Book 3 is in progress.

Expect superhero action, found family, emotional stakes, absurd humor, and offbeat romance.

Hello everyone!

My latest novel (Royal Road), tells the tale of Sunlein, an OP MC with sealed magic that navigates the political intrigues of his city as a guard.

If that sparks your interest, here is the blurb:

They beat him, humbled him, and leashed him. Now, the world will remember the flames of the Wandering Disaster.

Sunlein was once the fiercest young talent in the capital, his power surpassed only by his loyalty. But those gifts grew too strong, too fast. Spiraling out of control, his flames nearly burned the city that had once honored him as its cherished prodigy—and the Council wasn’t willing to forgive his mistake.

Having his powers sealed and only a lingering sense of duty to keep him company, Sunlein is given one last chance to redeem himself by serving the capital as a guard. But trouble always finds him. An unknown threat has slipped through the Council’s security, bent on bringing down the unjust capital.

With a life-choking, magic-binding collar around his neck and chaos spreading through the streets, Sunlein must weigh his priorities anew. Time is running out, and he must either watch his city burn or risk his life to unleash the Disaster once again.

But if he succeeds in breaking his leash... who will protect the citizens from him?

Title - The Blessed War

Life, Breath, and Spirit are finite pools. Once spent, they do not return.

Only Ascension restores them. Ascension requires Merit.

Merit requires killing.

Ren Aurvessa's Storehouse Blessing should have opened as a golden vault. Instead, it became a cramped cabinet barely large enough to hold a pebble. His mother can catch arrows in flight and store them. His six-year-old sister just awakened a pristine vault of her own.

Ren is the family disappointment.

Then House Aurvessa burns.

A silver script awakens behind his eyes, tracking Life, Breath, Spirit, and Merit. His wounds seal without healing. Pain becomes pleasure. His body insists he is fine even as the numbers count him toward death.

Hunted by soldiers and driven into monster-filled wilds, Ren has only one thing left: his little sister Liora.

He will not abandon her. Not while he can still carry her.

Not even after he should.

A dark progression fantasy about survival, love, and the price of becoming strong enough to keep what the world wants to take.

What to Expect from The Blessed War

A dark progression fantasy with a dangerous resource-based system, meaningful advancement, strange Blessings and Curses, brutal monsters, and a world where power always carries a price. Expect strong sibling bonds, survival against impossible odds, long-term mysteries, escalating progression, and consequences that matter.

MMA - Magic Martial Arts

Newly dev edited and resumed on RR with 1 book complete and B2 ongoing.

Who needs spells when you have perfectly functional fists?

Jonny was the king of the octagon, undefeated, and undefeatable. Then, in an attempt to rig his next match, a group of incompetent goons accidentally kills him, ending his world-class career, and sending him to an early grave... and another world.

When Jonny opens his eyes, he is the only son of a duke in a kingdom where magic is normal. There's only one problem. Well, two problems. One is that he has a rare condition that prevents him from using magic. The other is that the duke's brother wants Jonny dead. After a close shave with death, the duke has no choice but to secretly send Jonny away to an orphanage for his own safety. With luck, he would be able to have a relatively normal childhood, away from the politics and assassins of the ducal family, and later, he would be able to be "rediscovered" and brought back in.

But that's not going to happen if Jonny has any say in it. He was the strongest before, and he's going to be the strongest again, lack of magic be damned. And little does he know that the very condition that prevents him from using magic might be exactly what he needs to make his dream a reality.

What to expect:

  • Meathead MC
  • Realistic fight scenes (hopefully)
  • No harem
  • Magic vs magical muscles

What happens when the hero’s journey fails?

Hi, everyone. I’m Ben Krauter, the author and narrator of The Summoner, a character-driven dark fantasy series set in a world where evil already won the war.

Ezekiel Graystone is not a young hero discovering his destiny. He is a moon elf summoner and former colonel who already answered the call, fought the great war, and lost.

His story begins years later, when his brother’s disappearance forces him out of exile and back into the world he failed to save. Ezekiel must find a reason to stand up and try again, even if he no longer believes the world can be saved.

Along the way, you’ll meet a soft-spoken water goblin monk, a cursed half-elf who wields shadow magic, a demon-touched alchemist, a metal-furred murder cat, and summoned creatures whose loyalty must be earned rather than commanded.

The series may be for you if you enjoy:

  • Experienced protagonists carrying the weight of past failures
  • Found family and character-driven storytelling
  • Tactical magic and unconventional fantasy creatures
  • Heroes who survive through knowledge and preparation
  • Dark worlds that still leave room for humor, friendship, and hope

The first audiobook, The Summoner: Echoes of the Fallen, is now included with Audible Plus, so members can listen without spending a credit. I wrote and narrated it myself.

Book 2, The Summoner: Sea of Lost Memories, is also available. Book 3, Sepulcher of the Lich Queen, is currently with my alpha readers, and I’m hoping to release it before Christmas.

You can learn more about the series at benkrauter.com or join us on the Summoner Discord server.

Thanks for taking a look. I’m always happy to answer questions about the books, the world, or the experience of narrating my own work.

If you're interested in a LitRPG where heroes have some life experience, aren't handed their wins on a platter, and are not in the business of backtalking gods for no reason, then you should check out Geezer's Quest: https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/154697/geezers-quest-book-2-ongoing

When aliens from another dimension offer Earth the gift of eternal youth, Buck DiGriz takes his sweet time accepting. On the day he finally does, the aliens turn the planet into a fantasy land where they intend to experience the full extent of human imagination as players in a very much live game.

Buck is one of the few humans who manage to survive this transformation. Armed with many decades of life and RPG experience, he'll do what it takes to go from a cranky nuisance to a full-blown disaster for the invaders.

A quest like this requires trusty allies. The ones Buck finds are a Southern lawyer with a hair trigger and a stripper whose explosive personality is only rivaled by her fire spells. The three of them will have to work together, expand their party, and level up fast. All the while, they'll be hunted by alien agents not looking to have their fun spoiled by the few surviving locals.

An old man, a lawyer, and a stripper walk into an XP bar. The old man adjusts his collar and goes, "I tell ya, I get no respec."

For HWFWM fans I have a fan fic taking place off Pallimustus, with different confluences, and a group of meddling kids.

Title: A Siren's Call-HWFWM Inspired Story Genres: progression, wuxia, comedy, action, female lead

https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/179401/a-sirens-call-a-hwfwm-inspired-story

Earth was never supposed to know about the wider cosmos, let alone survive it. But years after the dimensional crises that nearly tore the planet apart, Earth has stabilized into a strange new normal. The magic that flooded the world didn't recede; it settled. Now, Essence users and Monsters are no longer hidden in the shadows—they are the new global normal, navigating a world of magic, untamed astral zones, and the lingering legacy of the man who broke their reality to save them.

Nineteen-year-old Ame has never seen a real sky. She has spent her entire life inside a retrofitted, high-tech astral space bunker, hidden away from a changing Earth that survived the cosmic crises of the past. To Ame, reality is a world of reinforced alloy walls, automated hydroponic bays, and the steady, hum of a mana locked aperture. But the bunker isn't just a sanctuary—it’s a training ground.

What to expect from this story:

  • xianxia

-An inspired setting, as it still takes place in the setting of Earth after the events of book 6 of He Who Fights With Monsters

  • A coming-of-age story and a mixed cast of characters

  • Some New and some Known essences and abilities. (I have made new essences and abilities, but I have tried keeping them inspired with the resources of the books, wiki and discord for examples: using Mythical creatures for confluences and using known abilities like “Crystallise Mana” as referenced powers )

  • A Slow Burn

What to not expect from this story:

  • Characters from the original story of HWFWM (they are inferred but not directly named)

  • Heavy romance

  • Pallimustus

The Immanent Lord of the Transcendent Shore.

A One Piece-Awakening-Enlightenmight type of novel. A super fast paced primordial origin story. The main character is pushed to the brink of absolute pinnacle of perfection and power, not for any goal but simply to surpass his own limits and have the power to change his reality for the better.

Its basically an accumulation of all fiction and even non-fiction that I've read since the early 2000's to 2020. That includes 90% of shonen anime/mangas, classic action webtoon/manwhas, popular western progression fantasy/litrpgs, and the best/top JPN/CN/KR webnovels and light novels.

Think a god that fractures himself to simply surpass himself or experience reality. Who then creates new avatars of himself to break the limits of the current universe.

Lord of Loopholes: A Fool Among Deities

To awaken, one's love for power must be greater than one's love for life

A liberator branded as a terrorist by world governments was defeated not by tactics, nor by a gun, nor by a bomb, but by cancer. The worst thing to ever happen to this dying hero of Earth, the old man who art in heaven, looked away. Ethan Forge didn't let fate dictate his exit from the world he had come to love and shed blood for.

Ethan Forge made his own exit and transmigrated to a world whose name no mortal seemed to remember—a world of cultivators and cultivation paths, a world of deities and immortality.

Ethan quit being a hero, but he didn't become a villain. In this life, he became a dedicated, hard-working employee at Self-Interest Corporation.

"Cultivation and living your life to the fullest can walk together, correct?"

About the world: Mortals gain power by having their souls absorb natural wonders — spiritual fragments in the form of flames. Each natural wonder belongs to a unique cultivation path. These cultivation paths are controlled by organisations: Religions, Guilds, Sects, and Clans, which decide who gets power and how far in ranks one can ascend.

u/Salaris Author - Andrew Rowe 1d ago

Hey all!

I write books with a style heavily influenced by RPGs and other fantasy games.

My first traditionally published release is the hardcover edition of How to Defeat a Demon King in Ten Easy Steps! It's is a Zelda and Dragon Quest inspired comedy novella, and it's a good intro to my style.

My latest series, The Lost Edge, starts with Edge of the Woods, which is highly inspired by The Legend of Zelda and Dragon Quest franchises. It's the story of a young man growing up in a faerie forest and seeking answers about his family, his past, and his dreams of an ancient magic sword. The most recent release is Edge of the Dream.

Arcane Ascension begins with Sufficiently Advanced Magic and is my most popular series. It's heavily inspired by games JRPGs Final Fantasy, Lufia, Bravely Default, and Trails of Cold Steel. It takes place in a high magic setting where magical marks called attunements grant vast powers to individuals who take "Judgments" inside a colossal tower to earn them.

My other main series are Weapons & Wielders and The War of Broken Mirrors.

Weapons and Wielders follows Keras Selyrian, a magic-wielding swordsman who arrives in a foreign land to search for help for his homeland. In the process, he will stumble upon the legend of the Six Sacred Swords and begin to seek them out.

The first novel in that series is Six Sacred Swords, and the series as a whole is heavily inspired by games like The Legend of Zelda, Dragon Quest, and Ys. You might enjoy it if you're in the mood for talking swords, bibliophile dragons, and a lot of accidentally breaking traps and puzzles. The audio book versions can be found here, narrated by the fantastic Nick Podehl!

The War of Broken Mirrors, which starts with Forging Divinity, is more closely related to western fantasy novels and RPGs. Forging Divinity focuses on a group of people investigating a city's religion, which claims that the local gods can raise anyone to divine status if they prove their loyalty and value.

(Apologies for ai cover I'm hiring someone to illustrate something new for me.)

SHELLFIRE: Synopsis.

For nine months, Elias has lived in the trenches of a war that has turned the world into mud, blood, and ash.

Alongside his twin brother Cael, he has survived artillery barrages, poison gas, starvation, and the constant threat of dying in a war neither of them understands anymore. But Cael is running out of time. The poison gas that scarred his lungs is slowly killing him, and Elias refuses to watch the last person he has left disappear.

Then command unveils a weapon that was never supposed to exist.

An Artillery Witch—a young woman capable of unleashing enough magical power to erase entire fortifications—is being brought to the front. Feared by soldiers and treated as little more than a living weapon, she is unstable, unpredictable, and seemingly connected to something far more dangerous than the war itself.

When Elias and Cael are unexpectedly tasked with escorting her across the devastated front, their mission becomes something far more complicated than simply delivering a weapon.

The Witch doesn't behave like a soldier. She doesn't remember everything about herself. And the more time Elias spends with her, the more he begins to suspect that she may know something about the war that their commanders desperately want to keep hidden.

With enemy forces closing in, Cael's condition worsening, and the Witch's power threatening to consume her, Elias is forced to make an impossible choice:

Follow orders and deliver the most destructive weapon ever created—

or protect the two people who may be the only family he has left.

In a world where magic has become another instrument of industrialized slaughter, Elias must cross a battlefield where humans, fairies, sylvans, trolls, mouslings, centaurs, and other races fight side by side in a war that has already forgotten why it began.

And somewhere beyond the trenches, something is waiting.

Something even the Artillery Witch is afraid of.

SHELLFIRE is a dark fantasy war story about brotherhood, trauma, the cost of survival, and what happens when humanity turns magic into a weapon.

I'm a freelance copy editor/proofreader who focuses mainly on sci-fi and fantasy, and particularly LitRPG/GameLit books. However, I am open to most genres.

I look out for all kinds of errors: grammatical issues, typos, consistency or continuity issues, any unclear phrasing, etc.

I charge around $6.50 per 1000 words, though I would need to see a sample before giving a firm quote. For a client's first book, I'd give a discounted rate of $5.50 per 1000 words.

Here is a link to my website, which has more details about what I do, my portfolio, and testimonials.

I have a post giving tips on how to find a good editor, which authors may find useful.

I also created an editing exercise that authors can do, either for fun, or to see how skilled you are at catching errors.

Her Beasts is a beastworld romance with seven male leads, tons of world-building, and a system in a primitive world.

As if things couldn’t get worse, the level of technology is so low that it’s pretty much nonexistent. The people of this world have no problem eating raw meat because they can all shift, yet they still find themselves starving to death every cold season. Add a system from the Beast Deity on top of it all, and Iris is going to have to give it her all just to survive in this new world.

If she wants to survive, she’s going to have to use every bit of knowledge at her disposal.

Hey all!

If you are hyped for dark martial arts masterpieces like Phantom Blade Zero and Zhong Kui: The Demon Hunter and craving that gritty atmosphere while waiting, I wanted to bring something authentic to the community.

I'm an independent creator born and raised in Hong Kong. To bring true authenticity, I actually drew from my own real-life background—I studied traditional martial arts, majored in Chinese Literature, and I even learned how to play the Dongxiao (the bamboo flute featured in the prologue!).

My debut book is officially live on Amazon (eBook, Paperback, and Kindle Unlimited!):

📜 Title: Wu-Wei: The Secret Scroll of Jianghu 🔥 What to expect: Gritty martial arts choreography, deep Taoist philosophy (the art of letting go), and a multi-layered dark conspiracy where the "righteous" aren't what they seem.

👉 Amazon Link (Paperback): https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0HH95T2NC?th=1&psc=1

(P.S. Just a small confession: My English is actually pretty terrible. I am relying heavily on my AI translator to type this, so thanks for your patience with a foreign newcomer! 😂)

I built a free browser extension called BookGlints that might be useful for progression fantasy readers who dig through reviews before committing to a long series.

You can enter anything you want to find or avoid, such as:

  • protagonist becoming OP too quickly
  • weak or stalled progression
  • dungeon crawling
  • heavy slice of life
  • romance taking over the plot
  • unfinished series

It scans real reviews semantically and shows the actual review excerpts, so you can judge what readers said yourself.

It currently supports Royal Road, Goodreads, and StoryGraph on Chrome and Firefox. Royal Road support includes fiction-page scans, title search, Read Later import, and batch scanning.

The core extension is free and BYOK. No BookGlints account or subscription required.

https://bookglints.com

I’d be curious what progression-fantasy-specific things you’d want to check before starting a series.

u/AmyAcid Author - Wizard With a Greatsword 11h ago

Hi everyone! Iris Orion is back today in Wizard With a Greatsword 2! Now with underwater heists, a haunted peninsula, pirate battles, new powers, pets and friends, and the consequences of her own actions.

When writing this book I set out to write multiple side quests as compelling genre pieces, begin more deeply exploring the struggles and growth of our young heroes, and get wild with the overhead conflicts of titans and gods that they're forced to ride the waves of. If you liked the first one, you'll love this one.

Book one is sitting at a healthy 4.7 stars on Amazon with over 600 ratings. Here are a few things readers have said in the reviews:

"The author combines breathless action with immersive worldbuilding. What stood out to me was the solid human side of the support characters; they struggle with emotions and concerns while confronting their duties and responsibilities."

"Fast paced, engaging characters, and great worldbuilding. More depth than most progression fantasy I've read. Looking forward to the sequel."

"What I got was better than I expected. Iris is such a fun and flawed character. The beginning sets up Iris and her new found powers well but brings action, adventure and mystique moving into act 2. The third act with the raid quest was gripping and had some exciting moments, mixed with some well earned character development. Iris' crew are a fantastic addition. This book was exceptional and started on all cylinders. Most importantly, BRING ON BOOK TWO!"
