It seems to me like this is a really good argument for making proton pass work offline... it boggles my mind that we still have to be connected to the internet for this.

u/boldjoy0050 15h ago
Yes, this is a huge issue. ALL of my passwords are in ProtonPass and now I can't access anything because their service is down. Can't even log into the app installed on my computer because there is a server issue.
At this point I am considering migrating back to 1Password because I know they allow log in without an internet connection.

u/MoldyGoatCheese 14h ago
Yeah, as soon as it's back up, I'll be looking to make sure I have a backup solution, as annoying as it is.

u/mirdragon 14h ago
I’ve been thinking about this as well, as not good it locked me out of passwords, only had a few months and this issue as well not always syncing between devices, had 1Password for years and never this issue, had switched to proton to reduce costs.

u/Soggy_Refrigerator32 14h ago
I've been meaning to write down all my logins as an offline backup (my particular situation makes this a good and not insecure option), I'm definitely making this a priority now. Passkeys are a little trickier though.

u/exxxidor 6h ago
I legit never realized it doesn't work offline. I just assumed they were smart enough to not tie a password manager to a home server. Wow.
1
u/Icy-Extent6095 14h ago
But it does work offline. I have Mac app, Firefox extension, iOS and iPad apps. They all work offline. You either have some old version of Proton Pass or something is not configured right.
1
u/SoapySage 14h ago
The offline mode initially worked with my browser extension during the first downtime, but when it went down the second time it force logged out the extension, whereas the Android app has worked offline so far.
2
u/Icy-Extent6095 14h ago
Indeed. I just checked Firefox extension and it does not work as of now. But it worked an hour ago when I just had to unlock with password.
EDIT: Mac, iOS and iPad apps all work.
1
u/SoapySage 14h ago
Yeah, it worked initially but whatever the specific issue is for this current downtime, it must have sent out something to desktop users and forced logged them out, only phone apps are working offline right now.

u/ShroomShroomBeepBeep 15h ago
I can cope with downtime, but can't understand how a password manager doesn't have local unlock, at least the Windows app/browser extension don't. I'm completely locked out of my own vaults on my laptop. Feels like very basic functionality that Proton have managed to completely overlook.
Thankfully, I still have offline access on my phone or I'd be totally screwed.

u/lil-av0cad0 13h ago
I'm shocked about offline. I expected to be able to at least get in offline for passwords. It won't even get me past the pin code. I'm on a Macbook.
I checked on iOS and it seems accessible on the phone.
Still scary that I could potentially be locked out of all my accounts.
2
u/Esher127 13h ago
Yeah, this has honestly made me rethink my usage of Proton Pass. I understand that downtime happens, but not having a way to authenticate locally to view my passwords makes me feel like my passwords no longer belong to me.

Proton has been down twice in ~7 or 8 days, if I'm not incorrect. It's not acceptable, and has made me a little hesitant wrt their ability to scale. If I want to read my emails, well, I assume I can do that 24/7.
Clearly having difficulties with login and therefore security.
Any service provider going up against Google needs to have their sh*t together. Google goes down, but very infrequently, and the bar is set very high as a consequence. Glad I have not put all my eggs in the Proton basket....

I love that offline mode doesn't work/isn't an option but the browser extension sure did use this chance to show me an ad for an upgraded proton subscription tier.

u/TensionElegant8121 16h ago
Yeah mines down too, works in the app but not on my work PC via the extension...had to type a couple randomized passwords manually 🤦

u/Much-Artichoke-476 16h ago
Rather lucky - I had just decided to spin up VaultWarden as a backup to ProtonPass and imported all my stuff over last night.
As I'm paying for Unlimited I'd rather use ProtonPass but certainly seems to have been a few issues lately.

u/julemand101 15h ago
It offered me to enter my password and access through offline mode using the Firefox extension.

u/Master_Camp_3200 15h ago
Been getting a 'too many requests' error across all devices etc. for a while now. Occasionaly downtime for upgrades or whatever is understandable, but I don't see any warnings and it's during the working day for the US and Europe.
I have secure backups of my info but they're (intentionally) a pain in the arse to access and it's made me realise that i need to have a better backup as Proton Pass pulls this kind of stuff.

I have this problem with error about too many attempts.
So how this app helps to keep your paswords safe if it doesn't work?
I started to use this app few month ago and the first problem was that i was logged out off all devices i use, so i didn't have problems to get in back, but today i can't log trought firefox. If it's not working, why we need this?
3
u/Ninjeratu 13h ago
Force logged out on all computers (Mac and Windows 11) and tablets (but not yet my Android phone). All offline enabled but that does not work.
Unlimited user here but if a "overheating" issue in FRA can disable all offline functions on all devices with offline enable like this it's back to KeepassXC and REAL offline passvaults.
This is absolutely unacceptable. It looks like a VPS service, not a serious company with redundancies and failovers. But hey .. let's vibe code a MEET copy instead of fixing basic functionality in core apps.
Never Proton again.

u/xIUPITERx 15h ago
and why did offline mode not work?
got locked out even when I had it enabled 😡
4
u/reddit_sublevel_456 14h ago
Agree with this. Clearly offline mode is not working as expected.
For some unknown reason I was signed out of extension and desktop. Now neither can get back in (invalid access token, internal server errors due to residual hardware errors, etc.). Glad I have a backup and the iOS app is still working.
Proton really needs to re-think failure modes for proper offline detection.

u/NinthShadow_ 13h ago
This situation is already starting to get concerning and annoying at the same time. I used Bitwarden Free for years and never had any issues; I only switched to Proton because I already had the Unlimited plan, but this is making me rethink how viable it'll be from now on to keep relying on Proton Pass as my password manager here on my phone.

unable to get into work things.... boy oh boy... this will be on my mind come renewal time..

u/DaedaIus42 16h ago
For me, it was unavailable for about 15 minutes right when I really needed it (Pass). Paradoxically, both the browser extension and the Windows 'application' failed to work, both suffered from lag, followed by a connection error, and then displayed some error messages. Now I am seriously considering alternatives or setting up an active backup for fast access.
This. Was. Terrible.
I can't do backups for each password change or each new record, so that when it's unavailable I can use them from the backup.
The unavailability of such a service is a serious problem.

It's wild that a private password manager built around security needs the internet to function. Seems to still be working on my phone but not on my work laptop. My whole team is locked out currently. We have a backup but passkeys on the computer side are not working.

u/Background_Face_7881 13h ago
Does anyone know of a free, trusted alternative where I can back-up my passwords? I can't be locked out of all my accounts again.

u/Simples_ 13h ago
Bitwarden - used it for years before switching to Proton Pass
https://bitwarden.com/go/start-free/

u/PrinceOfWhisperer 15h ago
I think because every time I try to add a passkeys it didn't allow me to create a passkeys even a login.
1
u/Stilgar314 15h ago
Mine says servers are down, but I can access my passwords. I tried phone app, desktop app and browser extension. All three say servers are down but, still, I can use my passwords.

u/redflagdan52 15h ago
I have pass offline mode enabled and it is working for me on Brave. All my other services, like Drive, mail, calendar, etc., are not working though.
1
u/mirdragon 14h ago
I had this earlier, but wouldn’t let me post it on here as classed as support question :(
At first thought home internet so tried via mobile and same issue, but hit and miss, it then wanted me to confirm I was human but no option confirm.
1
u/Exagone313 14h ago
You don't, even the desktop app does not work offline. It offers once to log in with your password, but after a minute or so it locks you out and requires Proton to be up.

Woah so this program don't work offline? That's a big red flag for me.

OFFLINE IS A LIE. IT'S USELESS WHEN ALL AUTHENTICATION GETS OFFLOADED TO THE CLOUD. MAYBE YOU HAVE A LOCAL DATABASE, BUT YOU GET NO ACCESS IF THE INTERNET IS DOWN OR THEIR SERVICES ARE DOWN.

As a new user I'm not satisfied at all with proton. I don't think I will pay for the service

I've seen on their status site that they're currently undergoing maintenance, and there's even more issues around the corner with VPN as their moving some servers to maintenance mode.
When it went out earlier though, they mentioned that users on 1.37 onward should have offline mode enabled by default - wish there was a notification about that to double check rather than an ad for Duo...

I do not have the problem.
But just to test it, I just tried to turn of my router, and boot up both of my pc’s and launch Firefox knowing that it is disconnected from the web. And the proton pass extension plugin show all of my vaults, aliases and login passwords just fine, on both pc’s 100% offline.
I also tried disconnecting my iPhone from both WiFi and cellular and put it in airplane mode, and also here I can access everything just as it should.
Could you guys have missed something in settings that should have been enabled, to make offline mode work? Because I do not have this problem at all.

u/Soggy_Refrigerator32 14h ago
Even so, Proton Mail is down too, and offline mode is no use for creating logins with aliases

u/Exciting-Record8101 16h ago
Yes, there is both maintenance (pretty awful timing in the middle of the work day) and additional problems: https://status.proton.me/
It seems to work again now.
