If you have subbed with us for a while you'll know we've grown significantly. We now need to moderate a little more carefully what kind of content we are allowing. Until now, we've (mostly) kept out the other Rhinos and been hands-off -- honestly, 99% of you have been great. Recently there's been an uptick in a few users posting their own content (Youtube channels or likewise) and we've heard a call by users to limit the amount of self-promoting content and we agree. Thus,
Feel free to post links to your own content (within reason). But if that's all you ever post, or it always seems to get voted down, take a good hard look in the mirror --- you just might be a spammer. A widely used rule of thumb is the 9:1 ratio, i.e. only 1 out of every 10 of your submissions should be your own content.
Anyone knowingly self-promoting, click-farming, or otherwise using our subreddit mainly for personal gain or promotion will be banned for 30 days.
A second offense is an immediate and indefinite ban without warning.

hey folks. Rhino 8. relatively simple models, stuff like exterior stairs and handrails, entry gates, cabinets, etc. Whenever I get done making the model and go to Layouts to do the drafting for the shop guys, I keep running into a weird problem.
I'll make a standard layout page, like one view, top or front, etc. I'll have the style and zoom etc all set, start dimensioning it, etc. Then I'll go and pull a dimension, and in the middle of the function, the view suddenly changes. like totally changes. from front to top, or top to perspective, etc.
is there a way to stop this? is it caused by something I'm doing? it's obnoxious. I end up having to reset the view and then redo all the dimensions etc.

Hi all. I posted that I'm ready to make the switch from Sketchup to Rhino. If I purchase now, I think it's version 8. Does Rhino automatically give upgrades to version 8 at no additional cost? And when version 9 is formally released, is that a new full purchase? Or is there any type of upgrade discount?

I have been a Sketchup user since around 2008. Have created things from trade show layouts, engineering model concepts, auto repair shop 2D dwg's.... all kinds of things.
The pay to play Sketchup price model has convinced me... not going to do it anymore.
My subscription is ending at the end of next month.
I'm going to Rhino.

I'm new to rhino(working on first project for architecture school) and need help with layers. From my understanding locking/unlocking a layer shouldn't change what's visible but that seems to be exactly what's happening. It's only taking away some of the lines. - also can't place new lines

Is there any way in rhino, whether just in the shaded viewport or custom render settings, that help achieve not hyper realistic, slightly graphic comic-esque shadows like revit or sketch up? Just basic enough to provide a good perspective of the model without having to setup a hyper realistic render.

so im trying to create a shell for this surface but whenever i try shell command it gives error that shell result is not solid so tried using offset surface then i noticed something unusual as there was an some kind of surface on front part as in image 2 but my in my curves it was just an plane surface, I dont know what it is and how to resolve this if anyone have any clue about how to resolve this and get perfect shell please help me out

When I'm drawing a model using RHINO8, the model displays abnormally in the render preview; it's pure white and clearly overexposed. What's causing this, and how can I improve it? I'm using millimeters; the current model size is 1000mm x 500mm x 400mm, and I'm using the default settings.

I’ve been working on a Rhino plugin called RGLink.
The idea came from a very simple problem I kept running into: when a Rhino project depends on several Grasshopper definitions, managing those files and reopening the right setup becomes unnecessarily messy.
RGLink is meant to make that workflow more direct.
With the RGLINK command, you can connect Grasshopper definitions to your Rhino project and manage multiple .gh files from one place instead of treating every definition as a completely separate workflow.
The goal isn’t to replace Grasshopper or add another complicated layer on top of it. It’s just a small workflow tool for people who constantly move between Rhino and Grasshopper.
I’m still developing it and I’d be interested in feedback from people who actually use Rhino + Grasshopper every day:
I’m also working on expanding the idea into more small workflow tools for Rhino, Grasshopper, and eventually Revit.
Would appreciate technical feedback, edge cases, or things you think I should add.

Thinking about buying a neo for school. My school uses rhino for some tech art classes that im in. Will rhino run fine. Im not making anything crazy just some parametric design.

Hello!
I am designing a 3D loop, the goal being to make a solid object that “twirls” with itself. (Inserted sketch below)
I am struggling sooo much with turning it into solid object, have tried almost everything that comes to my mind, loft, subd, surfaces, sweeps and nothing works. I would really appreciate some help.
Im also inserting a photo of the two closed curves I have prepared for this.

I’m a long term rhino on windows user who has been using archicad at work for a frustrating couple of years. One of the things that frustrates me about archicad, coming from rhino, is the brain deadening (lack of) speed and imprecision of the object snapping. Rhino is amazing, I can build up a flow and test ideas quite quickly, and I was assured in my movements. Archicad does not snap quickly, even if you reduce the snapping time setting, and it takes a lot of time relative to rhino to ensure precision, and these two combined have introduced a sluggish feeling to my day where everything feels like it takes forever, because of a half second delay to each movement.
I recently moved to a new job at a company that operate on Mac and was excited to learn they have a couple of rhino licenses. This excitement was short lived, because that sluggish snapping micro-delay i have to deal with in archicad is present in rhino mac too! I can’t be assured in my movements when I’m moving faster than the computer and it slows my work down. My computer has an M5 pro chip, 48GB of ram, and this was in an empty file, so performance isn’t an issue.
Is this common with Rhino on Mac? Is there a fix? A setting?

Importing SketchUp models into Rhino always left me with exploded meshes and bloated files that tanked my viewport, so I scripted around it.
Group by Material — scans imported SketchUp mesh and groups faces sharing a material (fast way to isolate glazing/brick/entourage for layer work.
Mesh to Block — converts mesh objects into Block definitions with a smart volumetric base point and auto-generated unique IDs, so repeat geometry (trees, site context) stops bloating the file
Runs via RunPythonScript or mapped to a toolbar alias, Rhino 7/8. Happy to share more about how they work if useful — glad to answer questions in the comments.

Since 2006, I have used ArchiCAD on a daily basis in Norwegian and German architectural firms and exhibition design agencies. Since 2012 I started doing mainly exhibition design and production. Naturally, the program was complete overkill for exhibition design. Nevertheless, I love its 2D and 3D capabilities, as well as its documentation tools.
ArchiCAD occupies a real niche in the field of exhibition design. I love the program, but I’ve also realized just how dependent on it I’ve become. I completely lost interest once Graphisoft introduced the subscription model, so I’ve started learning Rhino—much like when I switched from Adobe to Affinity a few years ago. Is there anyone out there going through a similar transition? I’m specifically referring to the switch from ArchiCAD to Rhino and trying to make the best of a bad situation.
For me, it’s less about comparing them or evaluating which is better or worse. The programs are simply very different and serve different purposes and goals. That said, I had a few positive moments when I started customizing my shortcuts, and I have to say, I find the results intriguing and community very diverse and likable.

Are any architects using rhino for their contract documents? I use sketchup for modelling and rendering in escape, and autocad for the 2D contract docs. Unlike revit, I love the freedom of both but there is some double up of work and the model and drawings aren’t linked. But I’m wondering if Rhino is like the combo of the two and could be used for contract docs?
What would be most ideal is that you can cut plans and sections of the model. The plan and section views are live and update with the model updating, and you can then draw lines, hatches and annotations over that model plan/ section view? Not sure if that’s possible but I sure hope so

Hello Friends! I am struggling and have been looking for answers for over an hour trying to figure out how i can make this triangle i made follow the nurbscurve. like all the triangles are currently looking at the same orientation.
This triangle twists and i got it to twist how i wanted it since normal twist component doesnt work on this specific line. is there any way i can do it? I sent my code as well.

I’ve been developing FlowSketcher, a browser-native CNC geometry engine built around a geometric method I call ArcFlow. ArcFlow is not a spline system and not a constraint solver.
The arcs are the geometry.
It works directly with analytical circular arcs and lines: * C1-continuous arc chains * Deterministic tangent propagation through the entire chain * No constraint solver, spline handles, or biarc reconstruction * No geometric approximation — native G1/G2/G3 geometry * Fully editable closed chains with live morphological deformation Move one point and the change propagates through the chain while continuity is maintained.
The current build creates and edits closed chains of real analytical arcs. Every point is movable, G2/G3 direction flips morph the entire shape, and the chain stays closed. Because the native geometry consists of analytical lines and arcs, NC generation is essentially a syntax translation rather than conventional post-processing. G1/G2/G3 (including Heidenhain Klartext) are generated directly.
1. Native G41/G42 Radius Compensation on Morphing Toolpaths To my knowledge, no commercial adaptive clearing algorithm (iMachining, Adaptive Clearing, Waveform, Trochoidal CAM, Siemens, Dassault, Autodesk) supports radius compensation on morphing toolpaths. ArcFlow does, because the geometry is analytical arcs from the start — no spline approximation or polyline step that breaks G41/G42.
2. Massively Reduced NC Code Size (1,200 Arcs vs. 20,000+ Linear Blocks) Standard adaptive toolpaths explode file sizes with tens of thousands of G1 point-to-point moves. A typical pocket easily reaches 20,000+ lines of code. Because ArcFlow runs on native analytical arcs, the exact same morphing pocket executes with roughly 1,200 real G2/G3 arcs. This eliminates control buffer starvation, drastically cuts file size, and runs smoothly on legacy machine controls without huge look-ahead buffers.
The interesting part isn't the UI — it’s what happens to the geometry when you grab one point and move it.

I'm trying to download the mac version / no admin zip from the Giulio Piacentino site but am getting the message
"Failed to send your message. Please try later or contact the administrator by another method." no matter what i fill in - on several browsers
Does anyone have a solve for this? I'm looking to use it in a new definition
Thanks!
