Hi! I'll be visiting your beautiful city next week and I'm super excited. One of the things I like to bring back home is something ornamental besides a magnet or a postcard, and I usually scavenge charity shops for it. I was wondering if somebody knew a place like that? I'm not looking for vintage antiques or valuables. Just old house stuff and trinkets that might be junk for others ahahah! When I try to search for possible shops all I get is vintage, expensive establishments, and I really wanted something like charity shops or second hand shops with donated items. Thank you for any possible help!

I've been renting in riga for about 2 years now, but I am looking for something smaller.

I honestly don't know how long I'll be staying in riga, might be two years, but I cannot seem to find much of anything. Like why is a room the size of a shoebox €300+?

My budget is somewhere around 300, and I know there are options like that, they're just not easy to find

I do look on SS.lv and I do find good options, but they either have a really big deposit, which I am unable to pay (150 a month, but you need to pay 400 before moving in. That's crazy honestly) Or the room is no longer available, but the ad will still be up for weeks.

I am very interested on how life changed since the fall of the soviet union, how the relationship between latvians and russians works or how life is there as a young person. But i'm open to any other topics that interest you to talk about.

I'm a Dutch guy with a mixed background — half Dutch and half East Asian — and I've been thinking about visiting Riga for a while.

A few years ago I had a Latvian girlfriend who was actually living in the Netherlands at the time. She used to speak very highly of Latvia and especially Riga. She always talked about how beautiful the city was, the atmosphere, the people, the nature, the food, and just how much she missed home sometimes. Ever since then, I've been curious to experience Latvia for myself.

So now I'm seriously considering taking a trip to Riga, and I have a few questions for people who live there or know the city well.

One thing I'm genuinely curious about: how are mixed or Asian-looking people generally perceived in Riga? I don't mean this in a dramatic way — I'm just curious because I obviously stand out a little more than the average Latvian-looking guy, and I have no idea what the general attitude is towards people with an East Asian background.

Also, what is the social and dating scene like in Riga? Is it easy to meet people naturally, for example through bars, cafés, nightlife, activities or social events? Or do most people mainly meet through friends and dating apps?

And I guess I'll be honest: my previous relationship probably also made me a little more interested in Latvian women 😄 I had a great experience with my ex, and I'm definitely open to meeting someone again while travelling — although I'm not flying over expecting to magically find a wife in three days, haha.

I'd mainly like to get a realistic impression of what Riga is like for a foreigner visiting alone. Is it a city where people are generally open to talking to strangers? What are some good areas to stay in? And what would you recommend doing if you want to experience the city beyond the typical tourist attractions?

Any advice, honest opinions or personal experiences would be appreciated. Especially from locals or other foreigners who have spent some time living in Riga.

I went on a solo trip to Riga in December– it was the first trip I went on since getting sober, and I'm now 16 month sober! I think my friends and family are sick of me talking about Riga and/or recommending them to go to Riga.

I absolutely adore solo travel, and I actually would much rather go alone than with others. I'm from Europe and have been to many other European countries, but Latvia (specifically Riga) will always have the most special place in my heart.

The city felt incredibly safe; of course I was vigilant especially as a solo travel female, but this is standard no matter where I go. The people were so so nice, nobody really bothered me unless I spoke to them– I loved this because when I'm wandering, sometimes I like to keep my headphones in. Maybe this was because all the shop workers initially spoke to me in Latvian so maybe nobody decided to bother me in general because they thought I was Latvian. It was also my first experience of a Christmas market abroad. And it was so fun! I thought it would be a trigger & I'd want to drink but it was just the most lovely atmosphere. I got to see a traditional 'rotaļa' dance with folk music (please correct me if it's not to right word!).

I come from a Celtic country, so I was really drawn to the traditional Latvian symbols (as we have our own traditional symbols where I'm from). I got a few wooden ones that I have placed around my room. I did a bit of research and had so much fun reading about the history– again, please correct me if I have said anything wrong or if I am somehow being insensitive! I just really really loved the culture.

The history of course is deeply sad, but so very interesting. I was incredibly moved by my trip to The Corner House. The tour guide was phenomenal, she was so knowledgeable but also I could see she had a lot of empathy towards the sufferers. Another phenomenal experience was 'Sensorium'– if you haven't been, go!! It was essentially an hour of experiencing what it's like to be blind. It was so eye opening (excuse the pun).

And finally... The medus kūka!!!! I will NEVER stop talking about this. I would go back to Riga for that cake alone!! Parunasim kafe'teeka & Kūkotava were amazing.

I rarely write in subreddits of cities/countries.. but there is something really special about Riga. Especially because it was my first sober solo trip where I realized travel doesn't have to involve getting drunk!

Took a few creative liberties here and there, so it’s not 100% to scale or identical to the original, but I'm really happy with how it turned out. Let me know what you think!

The second weekend of December we are planning a trip to Riga. It is my best mate's birthday and he hasn't travelled in years and we are treating him on a weekend.

We are a couple of guys 32-38 and are from the Caribbean.

We were wondering if you guys had any recommendations regarding food and nightlife.

For food, we would like to try local cuisine.

And for nightlife we are looking for suggestions to go out dancing. Especially looking for more the afro type of music places. Ow and of course, are there dress codes?

My sister is studying at 9th grade in Riga and she is worried about the exam she’ll have at the end of the academic year since there is not much information surrounding the exam available and her current school is not very helpful either.

Went to This Place Doesn't Need a Name and was surprised to see they charged me €2 for tap water. Not a bottle of water. Just tap water in some used bottle. I ordered brunch and a proper drink. It's my first time seeing this in Latvia for such a mediocre restaurant dressed up as a bistro. Anyone else seen this before?
