Two or three?

A fun yearly family shoot my father in law puts on. (Year 15)(Trophies involved)We are just scoring this paper, are there two or three holes here? I am just asking this community if they can see three.

This is shot at 40 yards with a .22 rifle.

I know the answer is three ,my first two were put in on the left and my third by itself on the right, but when scoring they say there are only two... They taped it and let me put one more into it, and I hit the right hole dead on.

With such a wide 10 why go for X? Iā€™d try walking them up to prevent the situation you found yourself in after 4 shots. Either way I clearly see 3 and could accept 4 but Iā€™m not 100% sure.

The rules were three into the target. We had more targets to shoot and how I was shooting, which was not good, I elected to shoot and try the X, because if i missed, it would at least be a 9 or 8 instead of a 5 at the head.

For future competitions, get some thicker paper targets made for matches, and fasten it against a substantial backing. That'll make scoring easier.

We used to do that for 10 meter airgun matches, in which it's not unusual to make ragged one hole groups with .177 pellets. And we used a scoring plug or probe to determine whether a single hole had two shots, or the second shot missed the paper completely. It's also for determining which ring to score.

With most flimsy paper targets, unsupported by backing, the paper often tears and the elongated hole makes it impossible to score accurately.

I like this idea. Thank you for the feedback. The bullet in one hole doesn't happen that regularly. This was such an anomaly.

I know you said it's a family fun thing, but I've found family "fun games" of all kinds can get very competitive and a little tense at times. After awhile some family and friends wouldn't play spades or Monopoly with me because I'm ruthless. šŸ˜†

Thats just it, it does get extremely competitive and there is usually someone mad at something. The father in law has rules for you, but not for him.

The really big silly thing about it, the father in law used to do competition shooting 30-40 years ago and he is still really good at it. He likes to give himself a first place trophy(as he does earn it by score). His three kids gripe about it every year lol. Which are all 35+ in age.

That's pretty funny. I used to shoot matches but often sabotaged myself by being too competitive and putting too much pressure on myself.

I'm a better shot now, despite age, injuries and arthritis, because I don't worry about it anymore. I'm just enjoying the moment. The main difference is I can no longer handle long offhand matches with heavy rifles, or one-hand pistols.

And my technique is better while my dominant eye vision is much worse due to astigmatism and sudden shift from farsighted to nearsighted. I see two targets with the right eye and just aim for the one on the right. šŸ˜†
